Cute Oceanview House

Guest: Lisa (Petaluma, California)
Date of Stay: 02/17/12 Review Submitted: 03/05/12

We just stayed at Driftwood and had a fantastic visit. The house is adorable, so many cute touches like surfboards on the wall, the shelves of games, beads for closet doors, cute chabby chic sitting area overlooking the ocean. My sister and I brought our kids aged 1.5yrs-7yrs and they all had fun playing in the backyard and inside. We took a hike down to the beach, some of the cliffside walks are a little scary w/small kids but there is an open path that is covered in green grass and it is breathtaking. Be prepared to hike over driftwood at the end but it is worth the secluded beach at the bottom! We were going to bring a dog but didn't and there is a slight past pet scent that we noticed. Also, if you have small children you have to be on guard about the wood burning stoves. Overall the visit was great, we would definitely return for another beachy stay at Driftwood!

Cozy, clean, million dollar views, very helpful owner

Spent a lazy, long New Years Eve weekend at Driftwood with my hubby and 2 small children. Cabin is clean, cozy and full of fun this & that - games, movies, telescope, books and some toys. Perfect with our 6 & 3 year olds - yard is completely fenced in and they loved the surfboard room. We spent a lot of time in the front room just relaxing and being together while enjoying the stunning view of the coast down to Point Arena lighthouse. Wide, winding magical walk down to a lovely beach. Owner very responsive & answered many questions! Certainly recommend and will be back.

My husband and I had a great time at Driftwood. We loved the cottage. It was very cozy when we got there. Rose had turned on the stoves and lit a few candles and we felt so welcomed :-) We saw a deer, rabbit and quails right in the backyard. We spent a lot of time exploring the many beaches up the coast, went to Mendocino and Fort Bragg. We also went down the scenic short path to Irish beach a couple of times. It's an amazing beach, like no other we've ever seen. It was a true vacation. Doug was really nice and helpful. We'll be back!

Owner response:Thanks for your wonderful review I can't tell you how much I appreciate it.

PERFECT!!

Date of Stay: 11/14/11 Review Submitted: 02/22/12

This review is late, but I needed to still post it. (I'm actually a little hesitant as we want to keep this gem to ourselves! :) We stayed a wonderful week at the Driftwood in November. I can imagine no other place I would rather stay next time we head to the Mendocino area. We have two small children and a dog and this place exceeded our expectations without being outrageously expensive. It was extremely clean, comfortable, well stocked, and the views cannot be beat! The owners were very friendly and Rose next door was a pleasure to meet! We saw whales and deer out the back window while having coffee in the mornings and the path down to the beach was magical! We all enjoyed building driftwood huts on the beach, during the day, and movies and puzzles during the evenings. I cannot emphasize how much more relaxing it was to stay in a house with our little family over a small hotel room. We had lots of room to stretch out and play. The full kitchen was great. Plus, there were so many wonderful touches throughout the home from useful beach gear, baby gear, pet bowls etc.... It is obvious that great care and thoughtfulness set this vacation home apart! We cannot wait to return and highly recommend this house for anyone from couples to families!

We were looking for a quiet place to celebrate our first anniversary that would allow us to bring our dog. The Driftwood was everything we were looking for and more. From the fist inquiry you know that Doug truly wants you to have a wonderful time at his vacation home. Everything is as described, the house is clean and comfortable and includes special touches to make you, your pet and/or children feel right at home. Doug also providing detailed information about what to see and do and called the day of our arrival to welcome us to the Driftwood and make sure we had everything we needed. At the Driftwood you can enjoy the ocean view and sunsets from the deck or den area, walk to the beach down the path from the back yard, play fetch with your dog with the toys provided in the house, watch a movie, read a book, take a quick trip up the coast to Mendocino and Fort Bragg, and prepare a nice meal in the kitchen. A perfect trip for us! Thanks Doug for making our first anniversary special. We are looking forward to our next stay at the Driftwood.

A Hidden Treasure

Guest: Andrew (Los Angeles, CA)
Date of Stay: 08/25/11 Review Submitted: 09/16/11

This is a truly incredible spot if you're looking for some relaxation and rejuvenation. We spent much of our time hiking in the nearby redwoods and along the rugged coastline, along with some incredible local wine-tasting. It was great to be able to come home each night and cook in a welcoming kitchen and soak our weary bodies out in the hot tub on the deck; watch shooting stars and listen to the waves crash below. The house was spotless when we arrived, and everything is laid out in detail, e.g., where to find pots, pans, towels, groceries, good restaurants etc. We will certainly be back. -- Andrew & Michelle

Amazing!

If we could give this property ten stars, we would! Where to begin... the owner was extremely helpful in answering our many questions, helping us identify the nearest surf spots and vineyars, and the directions given to the house were very detailed and accurate. Note that it can be a tough drive as the roads are a bit windy and not very well-lit if you're getting in late in the evening; needless to say, the details were key to getting us there! The house itself was clean, very well organized, and had many amenities beyond those listed in the description. A treasure trove of great movies, books, and board games; lists of nearby restaurants, grocery stores, vineyards, etc. The kitchen was well-stocked, and perfect for cooking. The space has a very home-like feel - one can tell that the owners have put a great deal of thought into creating an environment that is comfortable and welcoming; it's hard to put into words, other than to say that if you have an opportunity to stay here... DO! We will absolutely, positively, be returning for another weekend away. Many thanks to the owner for all his help and for helping to make our friend's birthday weekend memorable!

Owner response:Many thanks for your wonderful review. It means a lot to us for guests to have a great time at Driftwood! You, your family and friends are always welcome at Driftwood and HAPPY SURFING!

My family and I just returned from 5 nights at the bungalow. It was a fantastic trip! The home is perfect for a small family. We were able to bring our dog who had as much fun as we did! The back yard is great for dogs and kids. We were able to get to the beach without any problems. The beach is quiet and not busy. The porch over looking the ocean was fantastic and the hot tub was perfect at night. The home is clean and the kitchen has everything you need. The owner of the home was very helpful and a pleasure to work with. We hope to return soon.

Owner response:Thank you for you very kind words! Nothing is nicer then when guests have a great time at Driftwood! You and your family are always welcome.

Lovely and peaceful

Guest: T&T (Dallas)
Date of Stay: 07/19/11 Review Submitted: 08/13/11

Had a lovely time at Driftwood bungalow. We enjoyed the roominess of the house, the beauty of the coastal view and the cool breeze--coming from Dallas we sure didn't expect to use or appreciate the gas heaters in both living areas--but we ended up using them on those wonderfully chilly mornings. The house feels very private although it is conveniently located to everything we needed. Having Rose next door was great--she was so helpful and gave great advice on good places to visit. It was just the two of us, but the house would have been just as great if we had brought along the kids or friends. It's rustic, not fancy--comfortable and clean. Great views, quiet beach, away from the crowded areas.

Fantastic GetaWay!

Date of Stay: 06/06/11 Review Submitted: 06/22/11

Just back from 5 nights at the Driftwood. Had a fantastic time. Accommodations are cheerful and fun, clean and inviting. This is a cottage where you can feel at home and at ease, so it's perfect for folks with dogs (or kids!) The deck has glorious views of the ocean (if you're here at the right time, you can see whales as they make their way north or south.) A short, easy and lovely path will take you to miles of Manchester Beach and flocks of pelicans, sea lions, many other birds. There's lots of driftwood if you'd like to try your hand at sea-side architecture. Sunsets are glorious. No tv and no wifi means more reading, relaxing, and contemplating the beauty around you. Kitchen is filled with everything you need. Queenie's Roadside House in Elk has fantastic breakfasts. And a short drive to Pt. Arena will bring you to civilization, should you need it, with a movie theatre, free wifi at the Co-op, and good food shopping. The perfect getaway.

Owner response:Thank you sooooo much for your wonderful review which makes us very, very happy. We are even happier that you had a wonderful time at Driftwood. You are always welcome at Driftwood to make even more great memories. Thank you!!!

Just wanna say thank you for a great stay at Driftwood. My friends were so impressed by the views and all stuffs your prepared for us. We have a 16 month-old toddler and he couldn't stop riding the boat outside at the yard. My dog is freely walking around at the yard without me worrying he will chase the deer or anything. I was a bit worried at first that there is no internet connection but it was actually good to not working for full 4 days!! I couldn't wait to come back to your house for my next guests visit.

Owner response:Thanks for your very kind words. Nothing makes us as happy as a wonderful review such as yours. As for the net, it's nice to get away from that too, but in a pinch, there is always dial-up (uggg). Thanks again,

Great for a young family

Guest: Sophia (Tiburon)

We had wonderful stay at Driftwood. Our two young children absolutely loved the charming and playful decor, the sandbox out back, and a fun visit to the local lighthouse. As parents we liked that there is an organic market in nearby Point Arena. The day we left there was a low tide so we visited tide pools on the road to the lighthouse. There we saw a live sea urchin and dramatic, beautiful scenery. The Driftwood is a great place for a family with young kids.

Owner response:Thank you for your wonderful review! We are so happy that your visit to Driftwood was all that you expected. That is exactly what we strive for.

Driftwood: A Heavenly Retreat

Guest: Ann (South San Francisco, CA )
Date of Stay: 02/20/11 Review Submitted: 04/18/11

My friend and I spent 3 nights in February at the Driftwood cottage. Everything was superb, from the helpful directions and suggestions from the owner (where to eat, shop, get gas, etc.) to the beautifully decorated house. Furnishings were delightful (not your ordinary hotel/motel stuff), but classy, whimsical and beach-themed. Kitchen was equipped with everything you could imagine. Plenty to do - great movie library & games to play, especially on a rainy night with the fireplace(s) keeping us cozy. View from family room & deck are spectacular. We saw quail & bunnies in our back yard, and deer next door. We both marveled at how this place could be so impeccably clean and child/dog friendly at the same time. I'll definitely be back & next time I'm bringing my husband & dog too!

Owner response:Thank you, thank you, thank you!! We are soooo happy that you had a wonderful stay at Driftwood. And of course, husbands and other pets are always welcome!

Beautiful views but not as clean as we were hoping for

Guest: Sunshine54 (Sacramento, CA)
Date of Stay: 02/16/11 Review Submitted: 03/08/11

We really enjoyed the view and the wildlife we were able to see from the back porch. We enjoyed site seeing and the private beach access just a walk away. We were referred to the area by friends and looked forward to a relaxing vacation where we could create memories and a vacation spot to come back to time and time again. We had the choice to stay at hotels in town, where we would have been guaranteed cleanliness and comfort, however we chose to stay at this home because we felt we would be more comfortable there. We are disappointed that the house wasn’t as clean as we expected it to be. In the main bathroom there was a used washcloth in the shower, hair in the shower and in the sink and pubic hair on the floor. There was a constant mildew odor that lingered in the master bedroom and the main bathroom area. While putting down the dog water dish in the kitchen, we noticed there was pubic hair & mouse poop on the floor. There was also mouse poop on the couch and on the chairs in the sun room. We read in the folder on the table that it's not uncommon to find mouse poop but it was quite a shock to see poop where we were trying to relax. Needless to say, we came home not feeling like we had a relaxing vacation. We want to come back to the area at some point, but we unfortunately will not rent this home again.

Owner response: Since I have recently taken over the management of Driftwood, there have been a number of guests but no complaints so I really appreciate your comments which I read with a heavy heart. Your email has been referred to the cleaning service in an attempt to permanently correct all such matters for all future guests. There is no excuse for the washcloth and hair problems so none is offered. However, the mouse droppings are something of a control problem given the wilderness type location of Driftwood, the location of which adds substantially to Driftwood's rustic appeal. In our attempt to present a clean and comfortable place to relax and vacation, we perform inspections and cleaning touch-ups just prior to guest arrival to insure a pleasant stay, which somehow must have been neglected prior to your arrival. It is unfortunate that we were not notified or your concerns upon your arrival so that these matters could have been attended to prior to your first full day at Driftwood thereby rendering the remainder of your stay free of these issues. Again, please accept our apology,

Enjoyed Our Stay at Driftwood Bungalow!

Guest: Jon (Sacramento, CA)
Date of Stay: 12/27/10 Review Submitted: 03/18/11

I'm a little late in writing my review, but have been meaning to do it for quite some time. We stayed at Driftwood a few days after Christmas as a getaway from the holiday madness. It was a totally last minute trip and the owner was super accommodating in making things work given the short frame in our planning. When we got to the house we were immediately pleased with our decision to get away and use VRBO to rent a house. The house was very cute, EXTREMELY clean and well organized. It had everything you needed for a relaxing enjoyable stay. The weather was really bad during our stay so we spent a lot of time inside the house and we couldn't have been happier, lots of movies to choose from, games to play, comfy furniture, etc. We had a few breaks in the weather where we were able to go down to the beach and it couldn't have been easier...just walk straight out the back door, down a trail and you are on a gorgeous stretch of beach! We would love to stay here again next time we're looking for a get away from the craziness of life.

Owner response:It's never too late for such a wonderful review! We thank you and are elated that your visit to Driftwood was such a great getaway. When at the beach, there is not such thing as bad weather.

Driftwood, My favorite place to stay

Guest: Rod and Kathy (Ukiah, California)
Date of Stay: 12/23/10 Review Submitted: 03/18/11

The Driftwood is my favorite place to stay when the summer heat in Ukiah gets too oppressive, My Husband and I pack up the dogs, and in an hour and a half we're in cool ocean paradise. The Driftwood is not a fancy shmancy place, which is why we love it -- it's comfortable and cozy. The cabin is clean, stocked with everything you need to relax and enjoy. Dogs are welcome, and there are dog bowls, beds and towels for you four legged family. There's a great room with lots of windows and light and ocean views; a big family room with a dvd/video placer, two bedrooms, a fenced in yard with views of the bluffs and ocean. A short walk to the bluffs and down the trail will lead you to miles of empty beach. If you come during the week, you might have the ocean to yourself. If you want to explore the region, you can take great day trips north and south. If relaxing and reading all the back issues of The New Yorker is what you have in mind, you couldn't find a better spot.

Owner response:We are so happy that you enjoyed yourselves at Driftwood and we will work hard to maintain your standards. We love Driftwood and are overjoyed that it is also your favorite place to stay. We thank you for your rewarding review.

When Keri, Dante and I arrived a little after dark we were a little nervous. The sky was dark, the weather foreboding. But the place is perfect. And the best thing is that the iPhone doesn't work here. Dante loves the ocean view from the sun room and next time maybe the weather will allow exploring the beach. Everything is just where you need it to be, and the waves sing you to sleep. We'll be back! Dante says five paws out of five.

We just returned from a weekend at the Driftwood Cottage and highly recommend it. The layout of the cottage is excellent for families with children. After hours at the virtually empty beach, us parents retreated to the ocean-side living room for wine and quiet adult time while our three kids enjoyed a DVD in the front room. The house has everything a family needs (including beach towels!) and our dog had the absolute time of his life: dog treats, two beds, two fires to doze by, etc. Make sure to visit the Point Arena Lighthouse. It's very close to the cottage and our kids really liked the view from the top!

Owner response:Yes!! The museum at Point Arena Lighthouse is a fun trip and climbing to the top of the Lighthouse...quite the adventure!! So glad you had a great visit to Driftwood!

We stayed at the Driftwood Bungalow with our in-laws, our son and our dog. Holly, you have done such a great job in making the house an easy place to go on vacation. You provide so many comforts of home that make the vacation really relaxing. We loved that you provide a playpen, highchair and even dog bowls. We were able to travel without hauling 2 carfuls of stuff for 2 nights. So for the parents, very relaxing! Then, we get there, and not only is everything there, but there is a great fenced in yard for them to play in while we read and lounge on the deck and watch the waves! And the most beautiful sight were the 2 to 3 deer in the yard over the hill! The waves were amazing background noise in the evenings as we sat by the fire with a glass of wine while both the dog and our son slept soundly after a busy day of play by the ocean. Thank you and we will be back often!!

Owner response:Been there, done that when my 3 were little...hauling everything but the kitchen sink! I'm glad you had everything you needed to enjoy your trip to the coast!

My husband and I, and our dog, Odie, stayed a week at the Driftwood. We hiked to the beach every day--5 miles of sand, very few people. We sat on the porch and watched the birds. Odie chased tennis balls in the yard. We cooked, watched some dvd's, read, took some day trips. It was the most peaceful vacation i've had in YEARS. The house is cute and very quiet, with a wonderful enclosed porch, with views of the ocean and a stove for warmth. WE WILL BE BACK!

We cannot say enough good things about this wonderful home. It is perfect for families or just a cozy get away for two. I brought my husband, children, sister, and mom and we all absolutely loved the place. The view was insane it was so gorgeous. The home was so comfortable and user friendly. It was perfect for all ages and mindsets. My three favorite things aside from the view was the fenced in yard for my little ones, the two gas fireplaces and the two living room areas perfect for allowing peace and quiet or television for those so inclined. We will definitely be back.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Driftwood Bungalow! The view and beach access are amazing, and the accommodations warm and welcoming. Holly really thought of everything - it's fully set up for cooking, with activities for kids of all ages - perfect for a family with little ones.

Owner response:THANK YOU! What nice comments! We hope to see you again!!!
