It was a nice location. The home was spacious so the kids could explore. Yes the train does blow it's whistle at 7:30 am but usually for us the kids are up anyway or we wanted to get up to go site seeing. So really no big deal. The only thing I would suggest for the owner is to get a new housekeeper. She is not very good, but ok. Owners are very nice. Thanks for sharing your home with our family.

My family (including two kids ages 3 and nearly 2) stayed for a week at this home. It was wonderful and we were so glad we chose this house out of all the others available. The kids loved watching the 1880 train go (at this time of year it makes 3 roundtrips per day), and the house is plenty far away to not be a noise nuisance. The house had beautiful furniture and finishings in the kitchen and was very clean. It felt like home. We were so happy there was also a pack n play there for our little one, as well as an abundance of toys in the upstairs loft. There was also kiddie cups, plates, and silverware, and also a sandbox in the yard (though we didn't use it as it was too cold). We also enjoyed the location being within Hill City - close to all the things you'd want to be close to. A tip for those with little ones: Alpine Inn does takeout. We saw lots of deer every night while we were there. My one issue with the house was that the balcony is not finished in a couple places to the wall end - I would suggest that be completed so that folks don't have to move furniture around like we did to make sure the kids didn't try a trapeze act. Overall, it was a fantastic stay, and I almost hesitate to write this review as we plan on staying here again every year and don't want it booked up.

Just wanted to drop you a line to thank you for allowing us to stay in your home last week. What a beautiful place you have. We had a realy good time and enjoyed our stay. Being so close to the town, and of course with all the riding we did, we didnt have to cook while we were there. But you have everything anyone would need. Thanks again for offering your home for others to enjoy, if we ever come that way again I will keep you in mind. God bless you and your family. Sincerly,

This is a beautiful place to stay. With a location that can’t be beat. The house has a western theme with a large open kitchen and living areas. The solid maple plank flooring , high lofted ceilings, granite counter tops, and thick leather sofas, made us feel like we were living in luxury. The house has three fully finished bedrooms all with comfortable beds. The master bedroom is beautiful with its own modern bathroom, with a separate shower and a deep built-in tub. The house is located on a hill with a nice view out the kitchen window, overlooking the town. It was a short walk for us to downtown Hill City. My wife took pictures of the inside of the house to show our family what a neat place we found for our visit to the black hills.

This house is in a good location if you're looking to stay in town. The train is right in front of the house, so if you like to be waked every morning at 7:30, I guess this is the place to stay. The photos are pretty accurate, but unfortunately all you get are pictures of the rooms that have been remodeled. I wish the owner had shown pictures of the other bedrooms and bath. Seems to be lots of places to sleep if you like sleeping on the floor. Not sure who keeps the house up for owners, but the property was overgrown and the house could use a good cleaning. Also the steps on the back patios are rotting and could be dangerous to walk on. I've rented many houses over the last ten years and I have to say that is is probably one of the worst places as far as being clean and comfortable that I've rented. It really could be a nice place, if some updating were done. Kinda wish we had just stayed at the hotel down the road.

Owner response: We are sorry that you did not enjoy your stay. The location next to the train is clearly stated in the description of our rental. Most people love this about the house, ourselves included. We have left the hillside in a natural state in order to encourage the frequent visitors of deer and turkey. The house has two queen beds, a twin bunk bed, and a twin captain's bed. The only bed that is on the floor is a futon which is for overflow. We have placed the rotten steps on the back on our "to do" list. It has been a very wet year and we have lost a few. Nearly everyone that has ever stayed here has found the house to be both clean and comfortable.

We enjoyed staying here very much. Great location, lots of space, clean, and extremely comfortable. Everyone loved watching the 1880 train and deer traveling across the property. Thank you for the wonderful experience. We hope to stay again sometime.

Owner response: Thanks, Jen! The deer is our favorite part-- walking distance to downtown, but woodsy and private. We also have turkey strut by in the fall. I am glad you all had a nice stay and please do come back to the Hills!

This is a great property that is centrally located in the Black Hills. The home is very nice and welcoming. You can open the windows and doors and be a part of nature. Or you can close them up and be secluded. Everyone was thrilled from the Grandparents to the kids. It has something that all can enjoy. Our children loved the loft and the wooded area. There is much more to it than you can see from the pictures. The owner was very helpful is answering all my questions regarding the property and community. You can rent with confidence.

What a great house --- the photos don't do it justice! Very spacious, nicely decorated, with all the amenities of home. So close to town (a quick, easy walk), yet we were visited by deer almost every day. We would definitely stay here again.

              Owner info

              Year Purchased: 2006

About the owner: Our family bought this house after Hurricane Katrina sent us north for a couple of years. We loved it, and decided to keep it for summers. We hope to someday move here permanently.

Why the Owner Chose Hill City:
Proximity to downtown Hill City, but still feels woodsy. We love the burgeoning arts scene in Hill City, as well as the small town feel. Swimming in the lakes, fishing, hiking and biking the trails are favorite summer past times.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
This home has a great view of downtown, and yet deer walk by te window in the early morning and evening. We love the open great room, with the catwalk crossing overhead. We love that it is comfortable both for adults and children. The fireplace when it is cool/cold is lovely.
