Overlooking the courtyard of an ancient abbey founded in the 9th century by St. Richarde, the estranged wife of Charles le Gros, the truculent ruler of France, our Andlau apartment is in a 17th century building that has been fully modernized.
In our opinion, the Alsace is the quintessential medieval area of France and a myriad ancient villages exist within a few minutes of our doorstep. Strasbourg is 30 minutes away and other daytrips could include, Switzerland, Colmar, Germany's Black Forest including Heidelberg, Freiburg and Europapark (a well-run Disney-like entertainment park suitable for families).
Museums abound, especially in the larger villages. If you are an old car buff, you can't miss the collection at Mulhouse, comprised of over 500 classics with more than 250 Bugattis! Like old castles? Haute-Koenigsbourg is 20 minutes away. Hike in the Vosges Mountains, cruise on the Rhine River, shop in the magnificent stores of Strasbourg, explore the Maginot Line, gaze at centuries old art hidden in secret corners of ancient churches still in use today, savor a 'tarte a l'ognion' along with a glass of wine, enjoy a picnic overlooking a myriad vinyards, gamble at the casinos of Baden-Baden then plunge a naked body into the natural baths, "run the gauntlet" amidst the ruins of numerous ancient castles ........

We couldn't have asked for a better pied-a-terre! The apartment was comfortable, well outfitted, clean and very charming. Andlau, itself a charming town, turned out to be a perfect base to explore the many interesting towns and sites along the Route Des Vins Alsace. Eileen and Ralph were extremely helpful and accommodating. What a pleasurable week-long experience it turned out to be for us!!
Owner response:We're pleased that you enjoyed your stay at our Alsatian home Richard and Elaine and appreciate your comments. We are also grateful that you were so respectful of our pied-a-terre and would welcome a return visit from you at any time. Thank you.

We stayed here for a week and were sorry to leave! The apartment was spotless, very well equipped, and comfortable. A pleasure to get back to after a day's touring. It felt roomier than the pictures might suggest. Easy walk to restaurants (you have to try "Tarte Flambe") and to hiking trails. Excellent supermarket in nearby town. Ralph (the owner) was more than helpful, with both the booking details and local info (including wine suggestions). Probably as good a guide to the Andlau area as you'll find. Alsace is incredibly beautiful and Andlau is right on the "wine route". We recommend this apartment without hesitation!
Owner response:We are so pleased that you had a good time. This is a very special part of the world so it's a privilege to help our guests get the most from their stay.

My husband and I have been to Andlau several times. The tranquility and life of the town create lasting, warm memories for us. The apartment is in a lovely medieval abbey. The location of the apartment couldn't be better - in a medieval village on the Alsace wine route that is both charming, relaxed and filled with families in the wine making business who extend daily invitations for tastings! The charm and history of the region make another visit compelling. Lasting memories are: the medieval buildings and cobblestone streets, the ringing of the bells of the cathedral, incredible coffee and croissants for breakfast, and visits to neighboring villages on market days. There is so much to do in this region from exploring the wine route, to hikes in the forest, to the museum in Colmar, to a day trip to beautiful Strasbourg. The owners thought of everything to make our stay in Andlau memorable, tranquil and cozy for a lovely relaxing vacation. The apartment is perfect: clean and well maintained. We do recommend that you visit the Andlau apartment!

Andlau and the Hayes’ abode. What a piece of heaven for almost one week while we toured the spectacularly scenic wine country (route de vin) throughout the nearby villages. The apartment was so pleasantly appointed and welcoming that we didn’t want to leave! – felt like home. Even the daily bell from the nearby Abbey had its charm. Visitors must make certain to not miss the village market around the corner for preparing your special evening dinner, ranging from the delicious chickens barbequing before your eyes, to the fresh veggies and other local goodies, and most importantly a bottle or two of the local wine. The kitchen in the apartment was perfect for our culinary creations. And the day-hike up the hill to the gazebo overlooking Andlau was breathtaking. The apartment was a perfect home away from home to help us really appreciate the area. Undoubtedly one of the most serene and scenic places of our 4 week tour of Europe. Thanks for sharing your home with us. Hope we can come back!
