You'll know you're "not in Kansas anymore" in this charming waterfront Cape Cod style home on beautiful and historic Bay Street. The serenity and beauty of the Blue Dolphin and it's property make it a perennial favorite for photo shoots of catalogs (including Island Company 2007) and magazine/ newspaper articles from Vogue April 1999 to the Wall Street Journal April 23-24, 2011 D10.
The home is ideal for large family gatherings or for couples who want the flexibility of a large house when family or friends are visiting and a cozy cottage when they are alone. The main house on the ground floor sleeps six and includes two bedrooms and two full baths. It may be rented by itself or guests may choose to add up to three additional bedrooms and bathrooms in incremental prices as needed. THE BLUE DOLPHIN WILL ONLY BE RENTED TO ONE GROUP AT A TIME.
The fabulous 180 degree harbour view climaxes each evening with colorful and varying sunsets which may be enjoyed from any one of four porches (front patio; side bedroom covered porch, upstairs sun deck and private master bedroom balcony).
The Blue Dolphin has its own dock right out in front for your dinghy or rented Boston Whaler. The house also has a large and lovely lighted backyard garden filled with beautiful hibiscus, fragrant jasmine, colorful alamanda flowers, a rustic, but very functional barbeque pit and hammock.
Harbour Island was rated #1 in the region of the Caribbean, the Bahamas and Bermuda by Travel & Leisure in 2005 "Best Of" issue, August 2005. The BEACH has been rated one of the 10 best in the World by Condé Nast magazine and was #1 on the Travel Channel's "10 Best Beaches in the Caribbean" 2003 episode. The water on the harbour and at the beach is crystal clear azure, so inviting.
The Blue Dolphin is conveniently located only blocks from shops, restaurants and a short walk or even shorter golf cart ride (preferred mode of island travel) to the famous three mile pink sand beach.
Enjoy "the best of both worlds" spending your days at the beach and your mornings and evenings on the scenic and tranquil harbour.
Finally, the Blue Dolphin is one of very few houses on the island that include daily maid and dinner cook (except Sundays and holidays), so you're really on vacation!

Year Purchased: 1991
Why the Owner Chose Dunmore Town
Jamie has been going to Harbour Island since 1961 when his Grandfather "discovered" it and began spending every winter there. Jamie travelled down with his family at Christmas time most every year; they would stay in a rental house - usually on the Coral Sands property. He made friends with many local Bahamian boys - he is still friends with them 48 years later.
His grandfather called "Colonel Pratt" supported the islanders by backing them in the purchase of fishing boats, etc. Colonel Pratt held a Christmas party each year for the island children and gave them each a schilling (English currency at the time) and lots of candy; Jamie and the other grandchildren assisted with the party and enjoyed it as much as the islanders.
Kathy began going to the island when she started dating Jamie in college and fell in love with it (and him) right away! They married and moved to Seattle, Washington. It was a long trip to Harbour, but they visited as often as possible. When they eventually moved back to the midwest, they decided to "take the plunge" and invest in the island - they have not been sorry!
The "boys" have been going since birth (some of them in-utero).
They all love it and hope you will too!
The Unique Benefits at this House
The benefits of staying at the Blue Dolphin include Jamie's special love of gardening which shows in the beautiful and fragrant gardens that surround the house and Kathy's attention to detail within the house itself. Check the vrbo site for all the amenities - a long list. Jamie and Kathy tried to take the best ideas from the many rental homes they have stayed in over the years and incorporate them into their own property while adding a few things they wished they'd had at some of those homes.
Kathy remembers hanging clothes on the line when owners either did not have or would not let the renters use the dryer - not at the Blue Dolphin; a full size washer and dryer are available. For those guests who really do like the fresh air scent of clothes dried on the line, there is a clothes line available as well. WiFi is available for guests who want to stay in touch while lounging on the front patio or back by the fire-pit, etc.
Kathy and Jamie have always preferred the harbour - sunset side of the island, but they know that the world-famous pink sand beach on the sunrise side is a major attibute of the island as well. So, they have a Social Membership at the Coral Sands Resort that is available at no extra charge for Blue Dolphin guests. No hauling chairs to the beach - it is all ready for you at the Coral Sands, not to mention the lighted tennis court and beach bar/ grill - island drinks delivered right to your lounge chair with signing privileges (you can even utilize one of the Coral Sands' palapas if the sun is too intense)! Note - membership expires December 31, 2011; we're looking into finding a similar situation.
What are you waiting for!
Where most guests arrive - you can ask the water Taxi to deliver you right to the Blue Dolphin Dock if the tide is high!
Where guests pick up a water Taxi from the island of Eleuthera for the short ride to Harbour Island.
This is the spot where you will fly to visit Harbour Island. Then you take a 5 minute Taxi to the Three Island for the 5 minute Taxi to Harbour Island - not easy, but those who care find it and are g

I just wanted you to know our stay at the Blue Dolphin was fantastic!!! Your home is so comfortable and we enjoyed everything about it! Herman took the boys out fishing one day, so they were thrilled with their day and catching some fish. My step son (who is 10 years old) was so excited and it made his week. I have to say that I was impressed with the help of Eva and Betsy! They were a joy to be around and couldn't have been more polite and helpful. We've stayed in a lot of places down there and don't always get such a pleasant person working in the house. They were delightful to have around every day! The house is in such a great location, we became the "wedding" central for everyone. Each person who popped in loved the house and was especially drawn to the lovely porch and yard out back. What a dream it is to sit back there! And in the morning, we sat out front eating breakfast. Which then prompted everyone to stop by as they drove by! It was great and couldn't have been more perfect! We are already talking about going down next year! By the way, one of my friends took that photo of your house and thought you'd enjoy it. It turned out quite lovely! Thank you for sharing your wonderful home with us, we are so appreciative and blessed. Hoping to get back next year!

Blue Dolphin suited our family's needs perfectly. We were three generations (12 people) and we enjoyed the accommodations, beautiful enclosed garden, meals together on the terrace, the social membership at Coral Sands where we ate lunches, swam in the pool and went to the beach. We have stayed at different locations on Harbour Island but enjoy the bayside location with it's colorful houses and culture and beautiful sunsets.

We just returned from an idyllic week at your home in Briland. The Blue Dolphin house suited us perfectly; everyone had their own space and so appreciated the privacy allotted with each room. The patio, yard, and gardens were a wonderful additional "room" for our 1 and 3 year olds to run off steam. Besides loving being in your house together, our favorite activities were the Beach Club at Coral Sands and boating. My brother in law rented a perfect boat from Devon at Lil Shan's. It could accommodate all of us, and was used multiple times daily by various smaller groups for snorkeling trips to Devil's Backbone, and shell diving on a sandbar in the harbour. Some of us also rented bikes and explored the island that way. Our niece's wedding was spectacularly beautiful at Pink Sands. Everyone we encountered was delightfully friendly and helpful, Eva and Betsy (the cook & maid) have been great. Pigly Wigly and the Arthur’s Bakery were early morning destinations daily. So,thank you for allowing our gangly group to stay at Blue Dolphin. If we can ever pull off another family trip, we will certainly be in touch to rent from you again. My husband and I would love to return and hope to do so in the next year or so. I hope this will be a good season for you. We will certainly spread the word to friends about Harbour Island and Blue Dolphin house.

We had such a great time at the Blue Dolphin. Your place is beautiful, the upstairs is exceptional, and I can't thank you enough for giving us the opportunity to be there. Betsy and Eva were a blessing. Made lots of new friends on the island and good times were had by all!

I spent the second of two idyllic weeks - in February this year - at the Blue Dolphin on Harbour Island, Bahamas, and I've already signed up for a third in 2009! For those looking for a low key tropical beach vacation with a sense of community, this is definitely the spot; if you're expecting Miami Beach, look elsewhere! There are a few small, elegant hotels but no high-rise condos. Instead, there are beautiful, colorful, manicured homes, facing the bay or the ocean, and the Blue Dolphin - on the bay, 5 minutes by golf cart to the pink beach - is among the loveliest. The 5-bedroom, 5-bath house is well-appointed and staffed - a cook and a housekeeper - and is immaculate, roomy and charming. And what a joy it is to sit at sunset with a cocktail on one of the four porches, two down, two up - taking in the awesome view! Or in the flowering garden in the morning with a cup of coffee. One of the unique aspects of this island is that visitors and locals co-exist in divine harmony; I've rarely met such a friendly, welcoming - "Morning, Morning" - local population. En route to the expansive but never-crowded beach, one passes a cafe, a liquor store, a grocery store, a bakery, an ice-cream parlor, several small clothing shops, an art gallery, a church and a cemetery, not to mention the occasional rooster, keeping close watch on a hen and chicks in the backyard of one of the year-round residents! In other words, you are a participant in the life of a real village. There's a yacht basin, several fine restaurants and a night club or two, Gusty's being the most famous. Some friends reported seeing Cameron Diaz and Uma Thurman there in December! A social membership in the Coral Sands Resort - with free use of the beach amenitites, pool and tennis courts - comes with the house. All in all, I simply cannot imagine a more perfect spot for a stress-free, relaxing getaway. It's paradise!

"We all had a really good time while we were there and thought that the improvements to the house were great. I loved all of the extra balconies and (while I haven’t seen tons of other homes) really think the back yard must be special. I doubt there are many locations that offer as much in terms of the overall package - gorgeous beaches; low key, friendly people; ease of getting around and the access to an occasional lovely meal out. And with kids having the beach right next to a pool while still being able to get to your own house with enclosed outdoor space (fully fenced yard), nothing beats it. It is a special place." "We had so much fun in Harbour Island and really enjoyed staying at the Blue Dolphin. I love the floor plan of the house with the addition, and it worked perfectly for my family and friends. You are so lucky to have such a great house on a fun and beautiful island. Betsy (maid) was wonderful, and we ended up going to her church on Easter Sunday, what a treat! . . . We have such good memories of Harbour Island and always come home planning our next trip back."
