"It is a rare delight to find a house exactly as described on the internet. Thank you!" (Click on 'Travelers' Reviews' above to see many more reasons this casa is a great choice.)

A spacious elegant home with luxury features like filtered water throughout, free Vonage long distance phone calls, two pay-as-you-go cell phones to use while in town, and comfort!!! No hard seats here! Instead we offer an L-shaped comfy couch in the living room, huge cushy chairs in the master bedroom, and reading lights thoughtfully provided by beds and sitting spots to enjoy books from our growing library. Comfortable lounge chairs on the roof terrace and cushioned chairs and couch on the main terrace. Our large well-equipped kitchen is a joy to cook in. Tenants tells us we've thought of everything!

Location: We love San Miguel, but at night we like to sleep! With our casa we have all the fun and excitement this beautiful UNESCO World Heritage city has to offer PLUS a peaceful and luxurious retreat away from the noise and congestion. We were lucky to discover delightful Colonia Obraje. It's just beyond the fray on the northeast corner of town but an easy beautiful stroll to all the action; our casa is high enough for great views, but there's only one steep block, not a mountain climbing adventure to get home as you will find in many view homes! (If even one uphill block is too much, taxis are cheap and plentiful.)

The casa has expansive views from inside as well as from terraces on three levels. The living room has an L-shaped sofa framing the fireplace and the view out the French doors – a perfect place for conversation, reading, listening to music or watching the good size TV kept tucked away inside an armoire.

The kitchen with black cantera stone counters and dark wood cabinetry is open to the living-dining area so the cook can keep up with the conversation. Through a glass door off the kitchen, there is an intimate courtyard with a tiled fountain, perfect for morning coffee.

Upstairs the luxury-sized master suite has it's own private balcony through two sets of French doors, oversized upholstered easy chairs with ottoman, block-out curtains, a ceiling fan over the queen-size bed, walk-through designer closet with built-in drawers to the master bath with travertine tumbled marble walls, double sinks, soaking tub and separate shower. Wake up to the view of the mountains from bed, or step outside to the balcony to see city views and to see late evening fireworks at El Jardin! Measurements: The bedroom is 13' x 25'with 10' ceiling. The closet is 8' x 8', the master bath is 8.5' x 10'.

The second bedroom is smaller (11' x 10') but full of charm and has views of the hills, a queen size bed, block out curtains, full closet (4.5' x 3'), with a bathroom (6' x 7') tiled with travertine tumbled marble, next door.

The central area on the second level has a desk, ergonomic chair, wireless high speed internet hookup and the Vonage phone. The saltillo tile roof terrace has panoramic views of SMA & countryside. Great for sunbathing or star-gazing on the chaise lounges. The huge basement with 20' high ceilings is all white with handsome columns and has both natural and artificial light, making it a phenomenal artist's studio, or whatever!

The house is located on a quiet street with no thru traffic. Just 5 minute walk to the exciting La Aurora galleries, artist studios, restaurants, antique & designer shops and an excellent Spanish language school. Ten minutes to the daily colorful and delicious produce market and artisans' market, a 15-minute mostly-level charming stroll to El Jardin through two other beautiful plazas. For more photos & information, please visit our website by clicking on the 'More info' link below.)

If during your stay you need more bedrooms for visiting guests, consider renting the house next door, Casa Cecelia, which was built at the same time by the same architect, is the same size, has the same views, etc. Although it has fewer amenities (no filtered water, no Vonage), you could just use the phone and kitchen of our casa. Casa Cecelia is currently for sale, but I imagine any rental reservation contract would be honored. This is a great option for more flexibility.

Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2007

My husband Will & I live in Marin County, California. He is an artist. I am a writer and meditation teacher. We are in our 60's, have been married since 1969, and have four adult children and five grandchildren.

Why the Owner Chose Colonia Obraje

We fell in love with San Miguel, but every place we stayed in always fell short. Knowing we wanted to keep coming back, we decided to buy a casa for ourselves, fix it up to suit our idea of comfort, and then rent it out to others who also care about having a real home in this beautiful city.

The Unique Benefits of this House

We chose our casa because it is located on the edge of town, away from the bells that ring all night, the traffic and busyness of San Miguel that's delightful to experience but not to live in the middle of. Our casa is within easy walking distance to everything, so we feel it's the perfect answer. We chose it because it has beautiful views of the town and the mountains, and because it is spacious and elegant, but simple and welcoming. We had fun hiring the best local craftspeople to make artful comfortable furniture, and we continue to make sure that the house has every amenity to make our stay, and our guests' stays, enjoyable. Then we hired the most efficient, trustworthy and friendly English speaking property manager and a delightful house cleaner, both of whom have become very dear to us. Our tenants call them 'gems.'

Bob and I truly enjoyed our stay in your beautiful home for the month of March 2009. We really liked the afternoons and evenings. The patio right off the kitchen and living area was wonderful. It was a beautiful vista to enjoy a nice glass of wine (or two) with the many friends that we met in San Miguel. You had everything imaginable in the home for our use. The artwork and furnishings were great. Javier and Elba were both very helpful, delightful, and friendly. We also enjoyed meeting all of your neighbors. We even played with the children in the neighborhood a couple of times. We will truly miss San Jacinto 12.

Thanks again for the opportunity to stay at your lovely San Miguel home this past February. It was comfortable and well equipped, and your informational book was outstanding. In addition, both Javier and Elba were delightful to work with. We were sorry to close the door and say good bye to San Jacinto #12 on Saturday.

We rented Stephanie and Will's casa for the month of November and loved every minute of. The house is elegant and beautifully appointed and is located in a substantially Mexican neighborhood which enhanced the experience for us. It was just enough off the tourist trail to seem removed from the hubub. Often we made the 15 minute walk to El Jardin several times a day and thought nothing of it. The taxi back was about $2.00US. You can't beat it. San Miguel has great restaurants and a sophisticated art scene. We hope to return next year.

Lovely home, beautiful artwork, excellent location. Our stay in San Miguel was wonderful; tasty food, lots of interesting people watching at El Jardin, pleasant weather in October. Bring some good walking shoes for the cobblestone streets. A day trip to see the Pyramids of Teotihuacan by Mexico City is well worth it. No doubt about it you will love San Miguel.

We stayed in the Casa for the whole month of September and had a great time. Great kitchen! Beautiful views and really good location. Walk to Jardin was easy and taxi ride back up the hill was cheap. San Miguel is growing but still laid back. Even the taxi drivers are polite, don't honk horns and let you walk across the street. Lots of good restaurants of all kinds and lots of things to do. House tours are inexpensive and fun as are the tours to the outlying areas. the 1st class bus to Guanajuato was fantastic and only $8 each way. Lots fireworks and plenty of nightly noises to remind you that you are in Mexico ( dogs, kids and roosters). This is still a nice part of Mexico and a truly fun house to stay in.

I can't emphasize enough how fantastic this home was for the month we rented it. We have rented places before and had a vast aray of experiences. This home had absolutely everything we needed. We do cook, and from the cookware to the spices we lacked nothing! The bed was great! The views are beautiful. The guidebooks were helpful. I spent a great deal of time trying to think of what we could have needed and came up empty! Thank you both for allowing us to comfortably visit San Miguel!

We enjoyed our 7 day stay in your lovely home. The house was beautifully designed and furnished but also very comfortable and livable. For those of you wondering, the house is a very easy and enjoyable 15 minute walk from El Jardin or the center of town. Thanks again for sharing your great home with us. We will be back and we will be referring your home as a place to stay for our family and many friends when in San Miguel!

We have nothing but positive comments about your house in Colonia Obraje. The art work, folk art, and textiles made it warm and welcoming. The mango colors of the interior, peachy, golden, and pink, shifted with the angle of the sun. The roof deck with its view of town and the hills behind was spectacular. We loved watching the sunrise and sunset, the daily migration of the white-faced ibis, the hot air balloons that sometimes floated overhead, it was always changing. We lacked for nothing as the house was well equipped with top- end furnishings. We would highly recommend this lovely home.

Dear Stephanie and Will, As I add these comments to your guest book from your lovely casa in San Miguel de Allende, I feel at a loss of words to fully describe to you how much your home has added to our stay in Mexico. This has been our 7th consecutive winter vacation in Central America and it was the longest one with 7 weeks, but this is the first time that neither Jim nor I want to head home to Ohio. In previous years we started longing for our familiar comforts at home long before we reached the end of our vacation - not this time. Of course, much of the credit goes to beautiful San Miguel de Allende, the glorious weather, and the friendly people here, but the growing sadness I feel in preparation of our departure this coming Wednesday is to a large extent a reflection of how comfortable we are in your casa. Thank you very much for sharing your vacation home with us. Best wishes, Marita and Jim.
