Experience island living in a way you never dreamed of.
When we say clean, we mean clean! We pride ourselves on keeping the house clean inside and out. This peaceful vacation rental is on the Big Island of Hawaii - just one mile up the road from one of the island’s most beautiful locations: Laupahoehoe Point. A short walk or drive will reward you with vistas of green cliffs, often dotted with waterfalls that drop down into blue-green ocean. When you get to the Point, there is some of the most spectacular rugged coastline you will ever see. Take beach chairs any time of the day and be mesmerized by the waves.
This is a great place to stay for two couples or small families because of the privacy afforded by the two buildings connected by short walkway.
This is a sweet house with beamed cathedral ceilings, Corian countertops, and beautiful gardens. There is a great lanai to sit on for hours looking at the ocean, looking at the gardens, whales in the winter, and occasionally double rainbows. Nestled about 600 feet above sea level on the slopes of Mauna Kea, the magnificent 13,796 foot mountain that in the winter is actually snow capped. But at 600 feet, you won't feel the cold. Waipunalei (easy and beautiful to say 'why poona lay') is just 2 miles out of the old-style sleepy town of Laupahoehoe.
The gardens are full of tropical flowers and foliage, and you'll enjoy watching the birds.
Large windows continually remind you to look at the marvelous ocean. Just sitting on the lanai with a mai tai or a glass of juice and you'll know why Waipunalei is heaven. You'll enjoy exploring this beautiful - over 4000 square mile - island - the way other parts of Hawaii used to be. But when you return late in the afternoon, you'll be glad to be home. Just sit, relax, and enjoy. You will feel like you are home - not just at another vacation rental house.
This part of the Big Island is truly heaven. The island is so beautiful that it will be hard to stay home and enjoy just being here. Beach chairs, boogie boards, beach toys, beach umbrella, and all linens are provided. All you need to bring are your clothes.
We encourage you to consider renting for two weeks. There is plenty to do and see, and this location is great for taking off for day trips to explore anywhere on the island. With two weeks, you're not as likely to so 'driven' to always be on the go. People who have done this have thanked us later for encouraging them to go this route. The house is best suited for a family or two couples. Minimum rental is one week.
Our guest house is not for those who want to have a Waikiki kind of vacation where you lay in the sun on a white sand beach every day surrounded by crowds of people. Honolulu (where Waikiki is) is a free stopover if you want to spend a couple days there on your way to our house or back. The most beautiful white sand beaches are within an hour of the house and other beaches are closer. It is a great location for a family or a couple to explore all the treasures of the Big Island -- volcanoes, rainforests, waterfalls, hiking trails and the many interesting beaches.
The Mango house has its own driveway and total privacy.
The Big Island has it all - gorgeous white sand beaches, an active flowing volcano, huge waterfalls, 13, 800 foot mountains, and more. Average temperature year round is low 80's. We can help you see a Hawaii many people don’t see. The Mango house has satellite TV and high speed wireless.
A cleaning service is not included and people are expected to leave the house in nice condition. This is reflected in our reasonable rates. A cleaning fee option may be available. You'll have to ask us.
We delight in sharing this piece of paradise. Email us for availability or with questions you have.

My husband and I spent a week at Mango house and could not have been happier. What a gorgeous location with an ocean view, wrap around deck, and an extremely well equipped kitchen! We found all the comforts of home here, and felt so at ease and immersed in a true Hawaiian experience. Jane, our main point of contact was beyond gracious and extremely attentive to our needs. Upon arrival we were greeted by a hand written note, a bottle of wine, and a bowl full of delicious fruit which we devoured after our long flight and drive. The house is as close as you can stay to Laupahoehoe point, a quick drive to Akaka Falls, The 50's diner (cute little cafe), the sweet town of Honokaa, where Waipio Valley is, and a very easy drive to both Hilo and Waimea. It really is one of the most beautiful parts of the island and a very central part!!! MAHALO TO JANE <3Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

The 27 five star reviews written prior to this, pretty much sum up all the sentiments shared by my family and me after staying at the Mango House. We were looking for something quiet with an ocean view - a place for us to relax while touring the island. The Mango House was more than perfect for this. Located a short distance away from many smaller beaches and parks (many of which might not be named in tour books like Kalopa Native Forest State Park, Kolekole Beach Park), we used some of the days relaxing at the Mango House and exploring local areas both walking and by car - which made the whole experience of the trip to the Big Island so much more enjoyable. Just spending time in the Mango House was such a pleasant experience - an experience which can only be felt and not described adequately in words. The House had more than everything I can think off as being required. Jane was very helpful both prior to and through out our stay - from offering us information on how to cook bread fruit to helping us when we were stuck in traffic. The directions and suggestions offered had all that we needed. The house had a lot of magazines, information about attractions as well as a copy of the Big Island revealed book with personal experiences of several dining areas - all small things which enhanced our experience greatly. Jane made us feel at home in the Mango House - a trip for us to remember. Mahalo nui loa for opening the house to us.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sightseeing.

We didn't want for anything. Everything as described and pictured. Felt like we were in a tropical garden, quiet & peaceful. Able to sit outside to eat or visit & overlook trees, flowers & the ocean at a distance. Very clean, well maintained. Jane's instructions to get to property were "right on", which was good because we arrived at night during a rain. We would definitly recommend this property. The Back to 50"s diner was an experience in itself, besides the food being some of the best and least expensive we had. The owners were a delight to visit with. The area was centrally located between east & west coast with easy drive to either side & to Volcanos Nat'l Park.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, girls getaway, sightseeing.

" Thank you for opening your home to us. The mango house was the perfect getaway for our one year anniversary and for our friend’s vacation. Returning to Mango House was like coming home. This second stay with a friend from Germany visiting HI was much anticipated and our expectations were much more than adequately fulfilled. Mark and Rae are the best. From the initial contact when planning this second four day trip to our arrival at their now familiar idyllic retreat (first trip 4/10), we felt both fortunate to find availability that matched our needs and to confirm our plans with the extraordinary hosts.. Mango House is set high on a hillside overlooking the Pacific Ocean to the east in a lush tropical garden of flowers, fruit trees and colorful plants. One feels close to the environment; the wind, birdsongs, and the scents of the surrounding garden. The well designed "main house" and adjacent "guest room" provide everything one needs for a relaxed time in this peaceful area of the Hawaii'i Island coast. One is greeted arrangements of flowers from just outside...and a loaf of homemade banana bread! A comprehensive menu book led us to some excellent choices. The area south of Laupahoehoe toward Hilo provides many things of interest to see; the 1946 Tsunami Memorial Park, the train museum, Akaka Falls as well as small towns and places to self discover all along the Hamakua Coast. Browsing Hilo is time well spent, then consider Volcano, and the national park. One cannot go wrong at Mango House. The facilities are extraordinary, the hosts readily become fine friends, and the serene seclusion is enviable. What a great way to introduce a guest from Europe to the outer islands of our state. We'll head back at our earliest opportunity.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, sightseeing.
Owner response: We have many guests who return so it is great to have one of them submit a review. Mahalo, Will!

We were looking for a place to go and stay for a vacation getaway with family. The mango house was just the perfect spot. Not only did we get to enjoy the company of family in a relaxed beautiful setting, but each of us had privacy and the ability to have time for each other together as well as quiet time alone. The view and morning sunrise is in credible and Mark and Rae Ann are such gracious hosts that one could only be blessed to stay at such a wonderful vacation setting. Not far from the beaches and other higher traffic areas yet not in the middle of the hussle and bustle of the higher tourist areas. If you are looking for a relaxed get away, one that truly reflects the aloha spirit, This is the place to book. Aloha....and thanks to Rae Ann and MarkRecommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Mahalo. Just last night one of our neighbors said he still thinks this is the best location on the island, and we agree.

From the first time we called to begin planning our trip, you have been the most gracious hosts. Your home is even more beautiful than the pictures and your hospitality is exceptional. Thank you for sharing this beautiful island experience with us! We have been able to come and go at our own pace each day, and coming back to your guest house has been as welcoming as going home each evening. As our boys grow, this may be our last “big” vacation we enjoy together and I can’t think of any place nicer to have spent it. I hope at least my husband and I can return some day. The setting for this home is gorgeous with fruit trees and flowers all around. It is secluded and private with ocean views from inside and outside the house. Truly a vacation paradise!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, sightseeing.
Owner response: Since we enjoy this island so much, we want visitors to enjoy it as well. Providing information on what there is to see and do as well as providing a comfortable home for our guests to return to is something we get pleasure from doing.

This house was a great place to stay while we enjoyed our honeymoon. The owners are very friendly and keep the place looking wonderful! The yard is full of gorgeous plants and is landscaped with care, and the views are heavenly! They provided us with lots of information on places to explore around the island. All in all, they made it an easy and comfortable vacation. We would recommend this to anyone looking for an affordable yet luxurious stay. It was like a home away from home. Thank you for sharing your lovely retreat with us.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway, girls getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: We're glad our guests feel like the mango cottage does feel like a home away from home and that they appreciate the gardens, views, and information we provide.

We have had a really memorable stay at your beautiful home – we couldn’t have been more comfortable here, and I will never forget that sensational view – I really hope we can come back one day and enjoy waking up to it each day. We had wonderful trips to the rock pools at the point and to the beaches –a highlight was swimming with the sea turtles, especially for our six year old son. Thank you for the delicious banana cake and fruit – we really hope to return one day. April 2011.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, families with young children.

I’ll use three words to describe our stay at the Mango House: Perfect, Perfect, Perfect. If I had to find fault with anything it would be that there was only one couch to nap in. The pod/house arrangment made for all the privacy needed for two couples sharing expenses (or you could stick the teens out there and keep your sanity). The house was clean, well appointed and, for our tastes, on the right side of the island. Ocean breezes, cool nights, warm days, brief showers and convient to just about anywhere. We loved it! We will be going back and we don’t travel back to too many places. I would certainly recommend this property to anyone wanting a quiet, relaxing vacation. Owner response: We're so glad you enjoyed your relaxation time at our mango house. We, too, agree that this is the best part of the island!
