Experience island living in a way you never dreamed of.

When we say clean, we mean clean! We pride ourselves on keeping the house clean inside and out. This peaceful vacation rental is on the Big Island of Hawaii - just one mile up the road from one of the island’s most beautiful locations: Laupahoehoe Point. A short walk or drive will reward you with vistas of green cliffs, often dotted with waterfalls that drop down into blue-green ocean. When you get to the Point, there is some of the most spectacular rugged coastline you will ever see. Take beach chairs any time of the day and be mesmerized by the waves.

This is a great place to stay for couples(and small families) because of the privacy afforded by the two buildings connected by short walkway.

This is a sweet house with beamed cathedral ceilings, Corian countertops, and beautiful gardens. There is a great lanai to sit on for hours looking at the ocean, looking at the gardens, whales in the winter, and occasionally double rainbows. Nestled about 600 feet above sea level on the slopes of Mauna Kea, the magnificent 13,796 foot mountain that in the winter is actually snow capped. But at 600 feet, you won't feel the cold. Waipunalei (easy and beautiful to say "why poona lay") is just 2 miles out of the old-style sleepy town of Laupahoehoe.

Fruit trees are abundant. The gardens are full of tropical flowers, cared for lovingly by Mark. You may find bananas, papayas, or some other surprise on your lanai.

A huge mango tree provides sight and sound privacy between the houses. Large windows continually remind you to look at the marvelous ocean. Just sitting on the lanai with a mai tai or a glass of juice and you'll know why Waipunalei is heaven. You'll enjoy exploring this beautiful - over 4000 square mile - island - the way other parts of Hawaii used to be. But when you return late in the afternoon, you'll be glad to be home. Just sit, relax, and enjoy. Mark and Rae furnish the house like their home. It will feel like you are home - not at another vacation rental house.

This part of the Big Island is truly heaven. The island is so beautiful that it will be hard to stay home and enjoy just being here. Beach chairs, boogie boards, beach toys, beach umbrella, and all linens are provided. All you need to bring are your clothes.

We encourage you to consider renting for two weeks. There is plenty to do and see. With two weeks, you're not as likely to so "driven" to always be on the go. People who have done this have thanked us later for encouraging them to go this route. The houses are best suited for a family or two couples. Minimum rental is one week.

Our guest house is not for those who want to have a Waikiki kind of vacation where you lay in the sun on a white sand beach every day surrounded by crowds of people. Honolulu (where Waikiki is) is a free stopover if you want to spend a couple days there on your way to our house or back. The most beautiful white sand beaches are within an hour of the house and other beaches are closer. It is a great location for a family or a couple to explore all the treasures of the Big Island -- volcanoes, rainforests, waterfalls, hiking trails and the many interesting beaches.

The Mango house has separate driveway and total privacy.

The Big Island has it all - gorgeous white sand beaches, an active flowing volcano, huge waterfalls, 13, 800 foot mountains, and more. Average temperature year round is low 80's. We can help you see a Hawaii many people don’t see. The Mango house has satellite TV and high speed wireless.

Maid service is not included and people are expected to leave the house in nice condition. This is reflected in our reasonable rates. There likely can be a cleaning service available for an additional charge.

We delight in sharing this piece of paradise. Email us for availability or any questions at all. Click on website link below to see more photos.

Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 1996

Just before we were moving away from Oahu many years ago we visited the Big Island. As soon as we drove along the beautiful Hamakua Coast,we knew we when we moved back to Hawaii that we would look for property in this area.

Why the Owner Chose Laupahoehoe

We chose this quiet, peaceful area because it is scenic, has good weather, and is conveniently located about halfway between Waimea and Hilo. We built this ohana house in 1996 and started renting it as a vacation rental in 2007.

The Unique Benefits of this House

Staying in the mango house (so named because of the very old, huge mango tree next to it) will provide you with a comfortable, clean, relaxing place to come home to after a busy sightseeing or beach day.

    • This house was wonderful! Located 25 minutes from Hilo and nestled in the hills of Lapuahoehoe we wish we could move in! Sunrise on the lanai was amazing, the beds were very comfortable and the owners had everything you could need inside down to the rain ponchos! We visited three restaurants the owners suggested during our stay and loved them all! Mahalo Mark and Rae, we hope to return again soon for a longer visit! Ben, Becca, Robert and Marissa Day

    • The photos just don't do this wonderful cottage- actually 2 cottages-justice. Surrounded by colourful plantings in a private setting, nicely-appoined and supplied, with a view of the ocean and up the coast, these charming cottages are all we could have asked for. As well as the gracious helpfulness of the owners. Mahalo, Rae and Mark!

    • Comment Text: Deb and I have rented from Mark and Rae five times over the past decade. We would never consider going anywhere else. Even a popular island Bed and Breakfast can't compare to the value and serenity you receive here. One summer we rented two homes, so we could take our entire family; that was an unforgettable lifetime experience. This past July for the first time we rented the Mango house. It turned out to be a gem. The house has unmatched privacy and beauty. For two couples, it would be outstanding since there is a second building behind the house proper. The second building has a sizable bedroom and bathroom. And to be honest when you are in Hawaii, you spend very little time indoors. The Lanai of the Mango house is a great place to waste away the day. Also, I loved waking up before sunrise, and walking behind the house to pick perfectly ready to eat mangoes for our breakfast. Mark and Rae are wonderful hosts and we consider them special friends. They always go out of their way to make you welcome. Rae's little touches of freshly baked muffins and beautiful flowers throughout the house are heart-warming. Mark has done an awesome job landscaping the properties throughout the years. Sometimes we feel as if we are in a tropical rainforest. We especially enjoyed their dinner invitation and then geocaching with them later in the week. This vacation has solidified our dream to retire in the same vicinity of beautiful Laupahoehoe. The Therrien properties are the best kept secret of Hawaii:). Mark and Rae--thanks again for the many wonderful memories over the years and sharing your niche of paradise! I just purchased Keola Beamer's cd Island Born and the new John Cruz cd to maintain a little touch of Hawaii until we return. Thanks for sharing the Beamer cd with us!

    • We stayed in Rae and Mark's wonderful cottage in February 2008 and were thoroughly delighted with our experience. Rae and Mark are terrific hosts who have achieved the perfect balance between respecting their guests' privacy while being friendly and available. They even invited us over for a memorable gourmet breakfast one morning, which included lively conversation and a tour of their lovely garden. Our cottage was beautiful, roomy, uncluttered, bright, super clean and had everything one could possibly need for a comfortable and relaxing time. The location is quiet and secluded yet within easy reach of many of the best places to visit on the Big Island. We lucked out with sunny skies throughout our stay, but if it were to rain it is not far to travel to the Kona side for a day at the beach. The view of the Pacific Ocean from our lanai was fantastic, and out of every window one could see lush, tropical plants...this is exactly what we fantasized for our Hawaii vacation!

    • Sitting on the mango lanai in the midst of a "mini jungle" fed my soul. Mark and Rae saw to our every need. With all of their tips we were able to enjoy the "best" of the island. Mahalo, Rae and Mark for sharing your home, your life, and your love of the island with us. Staying at the Mango House has put life in our years!

    • One could choose to vacation in a cement, sterile hotel or one could choose to stay at a spectacular green, alive Hawaiian home! Unlike most rental homes, the Mango House welcomes the vacationer immediately as a second home and not just a place to sleep as some are. Also, you are not surrounded/crowded by other vacationers, because it is just you and Hawaii. We are so thankful to leave with such wonderful memories! – Tina, Kent, Clark, & Joel – Bonduel, WI
