Location: Pahoa, Puna District, Big Island, Hawaii, USA (Located in Puna District, 3 miles east of Pahoa town, 20-30) View Map
Accommodations: House, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths (Sleeps 6-8)
Just 30 miles east of the town of Hilo, in the Puna district, close to Pahoa, the wild beauty of Hawaii abounds. 4 miles from Pahoa, a little more remote and wild is Tutus Pu’Uhonua (Grandmother’s Place of Peace). As you arrive, you see a large, 2 lot property and a 1476 sqft home awaiting you. There is a large lawn for the kids to run and play, miles of quiet rural roads for your healthful walks, or just scenery enjoyment, 2 bikes are provided for a speedier, more extensive exploration.
As you settle into your large, 13X18 master bedroom, you find a large closet and dressers, ready for you to unpack. The adjoining master bath has a large, 25 sqft walk in tiled shower. All bath soap, shampoos, conditioner, hair dryer, ands linens are provided. Get everyone else settled into their space; a choice of 172 sqft bedroom with a double bed, or 188 sqft bedroom with 2 twin beds. Both have large closets and dresser space, and share a hall bathroom. All beds, except for the twins are pillow top for your comfort. Ceiling fans are in each room of the house to help move the air and keep you cooler.
A sightseeing day should start with taking advantage of some of the provided amenities: beach towels, sand mats, snorkel gear, ice chest, and always grab the umbrellas. On Hwy 130, a short distance, you will come to Lava Tree State Park, free public access; a beautiful and informative walk among trees petrified by the running lava of a long ago eruption. Next drive down to WAIOPAE TIDEPOOLS MARINE LIFE CONSERVATION DISTRICT, or the free access tide pools for snorkeling and viewing the abundant coral and fish life. After that, you could go to AHALANUI COUNTY PARK, locally called the “Warm Pond” or “Hot Pond”, a naturally heated pond (90 degrees) with fresh seawater inlet. Use of the park is free, and there are pavilions with picnic benches and BBQ pits. Next is ISAAC HALE BEACH PARK., a two-acre park with boat ramp. Popular activities in the bay include fishing and surfing, and is the site of Pohiki warm springs. A little further is MACKENZIE STATE RECREATION AREA, a 13 acre beach park well known as a place of eerie sounds and strange sites after dark ie, ‘night marchers’, processions of the spirits of ancient Hawaiians. The remainder of 137 is a very scenic, coastal route that will bring you to Kaim, 137 ends here where the lava flow crossed the road, you can return to 130, and back up to Pahoa, having made a full circle of the beaches and attractions in that area. Further information on this as well as pictures is available on the web.
At the end of your long, often very warm, day, come back to the house, toss the beach towels, bathing suits, and clothes in the washer, use the provided laundry soap and softener, get a cold drink (blender is available for margaritas, blended drinks, or smoothies for the kids), and sit on the 20X20 lanai with the ceiling fan cooling you down. After a while, start up the gas BBQ provided out at the lanai, or toss something quick in the microwave or oven. A fully stocked kitchen with place setting for 8 and all linens is provided or you can pick up some paper plates to make your vacation a little more ‘vacation’. Listen to the night sounds of Hawaii, the coqui frogs, and watch the gecko’s run around the lanai ceiling. It is all very relaxing and rejuvenating for you. You could catch up on events with the satellite TV or wireless internet provided.
Plan at least one evening to walk down to Kalapana volcanic eruption site. This is an evening trip, so be sure to take some of the flashlights provided in the house. There is a $5.00 parking fee, but access is free. Hawai`i County has opened a viewing area at the end of Highway 130, you may enter the viewing area between 5 and 8 p.m. daily, vehicles must exit the area by 10 p.m. when the gates will be locked.
Be sure to research all the other attractions available on the island. Rainbow Falls and the Boiling Pots in Hilo, Akaka Falls and Botanical Gardens, a fun stop is the ‘50s diner at Laupahoehoe. At the split, you can take Hwy 240 to Waipo Valley lookout, or continue going through Waimea, Waikoloa Village, and on into Kailua-Kona. Many attractions await you there, snorkeling, scuba diving, parasailing, whale watching, glass bottom boat for those not quite ready to snorkel; the view of ocean life and coral are amazing, and at a good price. Don’t forget to visit Pu’Uhonua O Honaunau (City of Refuge) historical park and get an interesting view of how criminals were handled in native Hawaii. You will find this about 20 miles south of Kailua-Kona, at Honaunau. Further up the road from here is Punalulu Beach, also called Black Sand Beach and is home of the Sea Turtles. Be sure to allow time to sit quietly and watch for this sight; after watching diligently you will begin to see a beak, then a flipper, then a back, then a tail, and possibly a yellow side as they flip, turn, play and eat. Best viewing is up on the lava by the restrooms, you can get a good view down at the beach. Another possible stop from here is Volcano National Park where you can view an informative video about the eruptions, viewing area above the Kilauea caldera, and, with a short walk to the Thurston Lava Tubes. There are many brochures and information pamphlets at the house to go through to plan your trips.
After all this vigorous and tiring sightseeing, come home to Tutu’s Pu’Uhonua, relax, and talk about all the sights you have seen on your trip. As you sit on the lanai, your view is pineapple plants, two avocado trees, papaya, banana trees, a Rambutan, a Starfruit tree, a Breadfruit tree, and a Kiukui Nut Tree. In addition to this, you have Hapuu, ferns, Nuns Orchids, Pikake, Puakenikeni, Gardenias, Ti plants, Night Blooming Jasmine, and many other plants to please and relax you. The setting is restful and serene. Why wait any longer to have that memorable vacation you have been waiting for.

Why the Owner Chose Pahoa
I chose this location because I have family nearby, it makes visiting very convenient; not to mention the beauty of the area.
The Unique Benefits at this House
I enjoy being in close proximity to the beaches and ocean side. I love to watch for whales when they are migrating. I enjoy and am an avid gardner so spend a lot of my time there working on the landscaping and yard (hard to do from so far away). I have come to love the gecko's and chameleons that inhabit the house with me; I get hours of pleasure watching them run around the lanai. Of course, there is always the family portion, with my 2 1/2 year old grandson that is so full of life it rejuvenates me.
Owner's Map of Pahoa
I a later middle age female, married, have worked for 27 years in county government assisting the needy population. I have 3 children, 3 grandchildren, one grandson, with another (unknown) on the way. I was fortunate enough to acquire property and be able to build in the beautiful tropics. My son and his family live in Pahoa; I have hopes of someday being able to retire and enjoy the calmer life. I love being able to share my good fortune with others that need a restful break. Their comfort is my main concern.

Aloha! Thank you for sharing this wonderful home with us! It was all we had hoped for and more. It has been so nice to have suchBa comfortable place to stay between island adventuires! We have had so much fun and it's very hard to leave paradise! We had people tell us not to go to the "Big Island", that it was boring! How silly!! We have not been able to do everything that we wanted to do and wish we could stay forever. Mahalo, The Beers family
