Huatulco is composed of three distinct areas. Santa Cruz is the resort area, La Crucecita is the residential, restaurant, and shopping area, and Tangolunda Bay is the main beach area. Huatulco is located 425 miles southeast of Acapulco, and 69 miles east of Puerto Excondido. Huatulco is becoming one of Mexico's newest resort destination projects. There are nine bays that encompass 36 beaches, all with their own unique character. Paved roads allow access to seven of the beaches, which offer excellent conditions for swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, boat tours, fishing, surfing and sunbathing. If a painter were to combine all the nuances of blue on his palette, to capture them in his paintings, the name of that series of paintings would surely be Huatulco. Huatulco means "the place where wood is adored" in Mixteca language. The average temperature year round is 82 degrees.
For getting around, taxis are abundant and inexpensive. There are several car/scooter rental companies. There are direct flights to the Huatulco International Airport, with Transat, from Calgary, Alberta (five and one-half hours) and Sky Service from Vancouver, British Columbia (six hours), during the tourist season. Huatulco International Airport is only a short 20 minute drive from Hacienda Real in Santa Cruz. Huatulco has only a few nightclubs and discos, and that is where everybody goes. They are generally open until the early hours of the morning. For a quieter evening, try a romantic piano bar and restaurant. |
