Lovely place but too close to an interstate

Guest: traveller_from_DC (Washington)
Date of Stay: 12/28/11 Review Submitted: 01/09/12

My husband and I spent here 5 days after Christmas 2011. It's a lovely, comfortable cabin, and a really great place for pooch owners--as good as Tom's description and then some. However, it is also less than 0.25 miles away from I-81, with only one other property between the cabin and the busy interstate, with truck traffic throughout the night, which made fir noisier nights than in downtown DC. Not recommended for light sleepers.

Owner response:Many guests have commented on how convenient my cabin is to the interstate exit! The exit is only 2 minutes from the cabin!! It would be wonderful if I could solve this one. When the leaves are on the trees the road is hardley noticeable.

Serene Retreat

We were a pretty diverse bunch...young adults, young children, grandparents, and the family dogs. From the moment we pulled into the drive until the reluctant departure, we enjoyed every bit of our stay! The cabin is comfortable and thoughtfully designed for guests. Our primary interest while there was supposed to be visiting Natural Bridge but the time relaxing at the cabin quickly eclipsed this! We did have a nice day at the Bridge and returned that evening to the Colonial Dining Room for dinner (very good meal) and of course the lights/story of creation. Our short stay was intended to be a mini-getaway and respite...and thanks to this gem it was even better than that. Many thanks to the owners for such a neat, comfy place in the mountains!

Owner response:There are many good restaurants in Lexington as well. The Colonial Dining Room in the Natural Bridge Hotel is a very beautiful facility. Their Seafood Buffet on Friday evening is very popular and may require advance reservations. They have an intimate bar called the Foxes Den which is adjacent to the dining room. There are several fine dining restaurants in Lexington. The Southern Inn, The Red Hen, Cafe Michele, and the Bistro all are highly regarded. Also there is a tapas restaurant called the Brix. I eat at Nikkos Grille on Main for breakfast and lunch. The Pink Cadillac at the interstate near the cabin is an old fashioned diner and serves large portions. It is very popular and is a good breakfast spot.

Left on 03/16/2011 for a stay in March 2011 My husband and I were looking to get away for a long weekend with our infant and dog, and came across the cabin on the internet. We really enjoyed our stay here. We found the cabin to be very cozy and relaxing, and the location is great for sight-seeing in nearby Natural Bridge and Lexington.

Comments: We spent Thanksgiving week at the cabin with our 3 college kids. What a delightful place to stay! I cannot say enough about the comfortable accommodations of the cabin. We grilled out several times, cooked Thanksgiving with all the trimmings, and also enjoyed the Pink Cadillac for lunch, the Bistro and the Red Hen for dinner. We made so'mores at the fire bowl and played croquet, badminton & horseshoes. The area if full of challenging and leisurely hikes. We hiked up House Mountain, Crabtree Falls, the Bluff and the Maury River Trail. Each morning my dog & I would wander the back yard and have tea on the back porch or the front swing. Tom's collection of reading materials covers about anything you would like. The antiques and accessories make this the cutest place you can imagine! All 5 of us said this was the perfect cabin for a quiet retreat so we could recharge our batteries! Everyone slept great.

A peice of heaven here on earth!!

My husband and I immensely enjoyed our weekend get-away to the cabin. It was so peaceful and relaxing. The cabin itself was homey and immaculate and just as pictured on the website. We took advantage of all it had to offer from the hammock to the porch swing, the bonfire pit to the jacuzzi, the outdoor dining area and the fully furnished kitchen. A lot of time was spent just marveling at the antiques and country decor that artfully filled every nook and cranny! We also loved bringing our pet with us meeting the friendly neighboring dogs, horses, and cows. There's plenty of sightseeing to do close by if you want to venture back to the real world....or not!! We chose not! I've recommended this retreat to everyone I've talked to since I've been home and cannot wait for a return visit! Thanks so much Tom & Faye; it was a pleasure meeting you.

Owner response:We work hard to have a nice relaxing place for our guests. I have furnished the cabin with many interesting things. The big stew pot in the yard makes a nice fire pit. The wood is under the big poplar tree near the driveway.

Relaxing Atmosphere

Our stay at this cabin was so pleasant and relaxing. It had something for everyone (and we had our two young children with us and their grandparents). Seeing the horses next door while eating breakfast was a treat in the mornings. The owners were friendly and great in answering any questions we had. The location couldn't be more convenient to local attractions. It was only a mile or so off the highway and less than ten minutes to the Safari Park and Natural Bridge, as well as very close to town, grocery store, and restaurants. Wineries and other attractions were not far away either. We would definitely recommend this cabin as it was cozy, clean, and it more than met our expectations.

Relaxing Getaway at Tom's Cabin

My husband and I have been wanting to go to Natural Bridge for a while. Although it's only three hours from home, we thought it would be nice to make it a weekend getaway with some close friends. We invited another married couple and when we weren't out on some trails, we spent our time grilling , playing horseshoes and playing late night card games. We enjoyed our stay at Tom's cabin and the bed's were comfortable. Definitly a charming little place. Would come back again. Honestly, we didn't turn the t.v. on once.

Owner response:Thanks for the review!! The beds are memory foam beds and were made by Salt Creek Bedding 13155 Salt Creek Rd. Fredricksburg, Ohio 44627

What a wonderful location to take our grandchildren for their Spring Break. They had plenty of room to roam outside, horse-shoe pits and vollyball nets, and very friendly horses in the field next door. Among the many local attractions were the Natural Bridge and Safari Park. The cabin is warm and felt like a home. We all loved our time there.

The cabin was way more than my expectations! Beautiful area, views, and very nice accommodations. Everything you need and more is provided. Cabin is very clean and nicely decorated. Plenty to do in the area. The information provided in the welcome booklet for area attractions and restaurants were most helpful. Loved the helpful hints about the area, visitors (Jingles) to expect, and notes about feeding the birds. The Pink Cadilac was a wonderful place for breakfast and lunch Jingles, the neighbor's dog, was so much fun to play with. Truly a wonderful getaway and I will be back. The owner's provided great service and are so sweet!

We had a wonderful weekend at the Virginia Log Cabin! The cabin is beautifully maintained; the front porch is just delightful. We were so grateful to be able to have our golden retriever, Henry, with us, and he had a wonderful time playing ball on the beautiful, rolling grounds. All in all, an excellent time in a beautiful part of Virginia.

Staying in this wonderful, welcoming cabin was so much better than staying in a hotel! You walk in and you feel at home because it is so inviting. The furnishings and decorations are exactly what you would hope to find in a log cabin -- whimsical yet practical and comfortable. The place dares you not to kick back, relax and enjoy! The area itself is beautiful, plenty to see and do. But just as good, if not better, were the times when we sat on the back porch and played cards and board games, or headed into the backyard for a badminton marathon. I would not hesitate to recommend this retreat to anyone!

What's to say! This is our second visit to Tom and Faye's cabin within the last 2 years. We came back this time based on our first visit in 2007. As dog owners, our first pre-requisite is a place where "all of us" are welcome. We do bring our dog, but for those of you who don't have a dog, you would never know a dog has been there - probably important to some! The cabin is very inviting and comfortable. There is nothing lacking. I prefer to cook or grill - I'm not one to go out to eat every night, and Tom's cabin has all you could want! The rooms are very "homey" and lend themselves to a great place to relax and enjoy! We plan to return in the very near future!

On June 4, 2009, our son graduated from Washington and Lee University. My wife, Emaline, and I have been blessed to have known the owners Tom and Faye Bradshaw since the 70's. Our celebration headquarters was the Cabin and the Caboose as we spent three magnificent days at the "compound" meeting and greeting friends and having the celebration in the form of a picnic on the day of graduation with 36 people in attendance. Very simply, it was a perfect venue for us, and we knew that before making our arrangements. Tom and Faye Bradshaw went well beyond our expectations to make sure that all of our needs were taken care of. It does not get any better than this property if you are looking for a comfortable place to stay in Lexington. We will be back and would never hesitate telling everyone about our wonderful experience.

everything was great, we didn't want for anything,it even came with a very friendly dog, the home was beautiful and the landscaping was gorgeous. we had our morning coffee on the back porch while we watched the birds and squirrels. my mother went through the death of 2 sisters and my father in 4 months, needless to say she needed to get away, she said it was the most peaceful place she had ever been too. she also referred it to all my brothers and their famililes.

The cabin was everything it looked and said to be. It was beautiful and so cozy and comfy... It is decorated so nicely. My husband and I needed a weekend to lounge in our PJ's in front of a great warm fire with a good book and magazines, something we have little time to do in our hectic schedules. Prior to coming, we had decided to eat out each night, but instead, we ate our meals in the cabin, it was so peaceful and relaxing that cooking a meal, was no big deal. We would recommend this adorable and wonderful cabin to anyone. The Virginia Log Cabin offered by Tom Bradshaw will definately be seeing us again.

We had the Cabin for VMI Parent's weekend 2008. It was our 3rd year in a row. What a wonderful place! Tom is an exceptional host! We love it there and we are hoping to continue the tradition for the next 4 years. The cabin is a wonderful place to have a party. We had around 50 people there Saturday night and with the expansive back porch the cabin handled the crowd very well.

Visited natural Bridge July 12-13. the cabin was great. Anything you could want, was in there. In my haste to leave, I forgot coffee and cereal 4 the kids, but found some in the cubboards (replaced cereal). Enjoyed the porches. My husband and I had coffee in the am and wine at night, while the kids played outside and ran around. Enjoyed the coziness of the cabin very much. Sat night we played "Pigged Out", and had lots of fun. We decided to come back sometime in the winter, so the kids can catch some snow. I'm telling everybody about Tom & faye's cabin. Natural Bridge is a must see. Tom & Faye, thanks...we'll be back.

Whether watching the birds feed, the horses roam the fields or rocking on the front porch, you feel 1000 miles away from hustle and bustle of daily life. I think staying there is something everyone owes themselves! Thanks Tom!

We stayed at the cabin May 14-16, 2008 and used it as a base of ops for our son's graduation from VMI. We had stayed there once before. The cabin is spacious and very well equipped. It's located in the country--horses next door, etc. We particularly enjoyed the large back porch--good for coffee in the a.m. and get-togethers in the evening. Tom was a great host and responded quickly to all questions. The renovated caboose is a real conversation piece and can also be rented.

My family and I visited Tom and Faye's cabin the last week in March 2008. The accomodations were perfect for us. I especially loved the jacuzzi and used it every night! Had fun playing badminton with the kids too. Great weather and we stayed busy hiking the beautiful Apple Orchard Falls, horseback riding in Buena Vista, tour of historical Lexington, a visit to the Animal Safari just down the street and of course the Natural Bridge and caverns. I recommend going to the Natural Bridge for their night light show too! Missed seeing the Virginia Horse Center and the cadets parade on Friday at VMI, but will do that on our return visit. Gracious hosts, easy access and beautiful surroundings made this a trip for my family to remember and a return trip is inevitable!

My wife, our dog and I really enjoyed Tom Bradshaw's Virginia Log Cabin when we stayed there September 3 and 4, 2007. It's a beautiful place and we especially appreciated the jacuzzi after a long day of driving and hiking. I posted some pictures from our trip, including a couple of Tom Bradshaw's cabin, and one of my friends who is interested in trains contacted me immediately about more information on the C&O caboose.

We throroughly enjoyed our time at the cabin. The location was very convenient to all the local attractions, which was a great bonus. We would've preferred rocking on the back porch to avoid some traffic noise, but that was really a minor detail. The kids loved the space, the horses, and the cows. Our lab, Savannah, was in her element and only barked a "few" times at the irritated horse. All in all a great time was had by all!

Mr. and Mrs. Bradshaw, Thank you so much for allowing us the honor of using your cabin. My husband is a Chaplain at the Pentagon...and it had been a very busy month for both of us. We were excited about getting away for awhile and we were not disappointed. We enjoyed the cabin very much and we enjoyed seeing the Natural Bridge and Lexington. We also enjoyed a wonderful lunch at the Pink Cadillac. We were so relaxed by the time we returned home. My city dog who has never seen a horse, cow or that much ground enjoyed your cabin also. Know that we were truly Blessed by being able to spend the time at your cabin Again, thank you. It was a pleasure to meet you Mr. Bradshaw and the quilts that your wife has placed on the beds are beautiful. May God Bless you both for the Blessings you give to others by sharing your place.
