Duluth cabin description

This cabin sits on an ideal piece of private property on a small 80 acre lake only 10' from the waters edge. Sitting on the sofa is like being on a house boat. Summer Lane Cottage is perfectly situated for sunrises and sunsets, with an enclosed screen porch off the deck. The deck faces North, great for Northern Lights viewing on a good night.

After owning our home on the lake 20 years we purchased this property 11 years ago and we have done extensive renovation. New carpet, wall coverings all new furniture were added first. Then an enclosed screen room was added to the deck to enjoy bug free evenings and out door dining. There is a canoe, paddle boat as well as a 24' dock to enjoy the water. 2008 updates include a new shower enclosuer and bathroom fixtures. In 2009 we resided the exterior and added gutters. The kitchen was completely renovated with new counters and cabinets and a new stove and fridge. We continue to add to the property each year and invest back based on our rentals.

A DNR stocked trout lake is 1/2 mile away with a walk in access (google Corona Lake); loons and moose are on and around the lake. 10 miles to the Munger Trial for biking or in-line skating and 13 miles to Jay Cooke State Park for remarkable hiking.

The guests who enjoy it here are looking for a quiet site to read, hike, bike and enjoy a quiet lakeshore experience. The home is tastefully done, with ultra-comfortable furnishings and a complete kitchen to allow the chef in you to come out. Our first year in VRBO we were overwhelmed by inquiries and we have enjoyed 100% customer satisfaction.

A massage studio(The Body Connection in Cloquet) and fitness center(Park Ave. Fitness) are just 10 miles away. Books, music, and regional art work fill this home. The first guest who rented it for a weekend stayed 3 weeks. Duluth has the fifth oldest children's museum in the nation and in summer of 2014 it will feature a dinosaur exhibit sure to delight all ages.

The host welcomes iTravex members inquiries with incentives provided.

We had a great time staying at this cabin. There were houses only on one side of the lake which made it very private. The cabin was clean and had everything that we needed for our stay there. It was so nice to have a canoe that we could use and we used it to explore the lake. We had dinner out on the screened-in porch and we watched movies at night. We hiked into Jay Cooke Sate Park and also visited Duluth.

My 17 year old son wanted a northwoods rustic vacation this summer and this was just what he had in mind. The weather was beautiful, the lake was peaceful, and the fish were biting. We (wife, son, and myself) took one day away and went to Duluth but spent the rest of our time just enjoying the quiet relaxing tranquility of the cabin. There was a nice selection of board games to play and we spent a lot of time in the canoe. We even had cell phone service (not sure if that is good or bad) unlike some people who had reviewed. Money well spent!

Wonderful stay. Clean and well appointed. Screened in porch was perfect for meals, fire pit was ready and waiting for us. The lake is quiet and calm. The cottage faces north so you can watch the sun set over the dock, and sleep in:). The canoe and paddle boat ready for our use was SO wonderful for exploring. We would recommend this cottage to all our friends. SO peaceful. Thank you for a perfect get away:)

We were the first renters of the season and arrived to find everything in order and very clean. The owner was out of town during our stay, but he and I communicated ahead of time and he was wonderful about insight on where to find the nearest stores and a great meat market in the area. I had all the information I needed from him to meet my needs, as well as a contact person if we needed anything in his absence. The fish did not bite while we were there, although they were in there, as we would see them jumping out at night to get bugs! Lake is beautiful and there were about 4 loons there during our stay, so listening to their calls was wonderful! We ate our meals on the screened porch when weather cooperated. We did have cell service with Verizon in certain areas of the house, so that was a good surprise. Kitchen had all the utensils we could ask for and more. The cottage is a bit on the secluded side, since most of the other residents were not there during the week. Black Bear casino was just down the road and the cottage very accessible to I35, so our day trips to Duluth were a short distance away and we loved coming back at the end of the day to relax.

My wife and I had a great time for our weekend away from it all. The cabin was very nice and well stocked. Lots of firewood just waiting for us. We did a lot of cooking while we were there and ate every meal on the porch overlooking the lake even though it was fairly chilly the entire time. It was so peaceful and quiet. Could hear the highway clearly from outside most of the time but it was still very nice.. Took the canoe out on the lake several times and just paddled around. Went out one morning on the canoe in the middle of the fog and watched the sunrise, WOW! Did some fishing once but didn't really catch anything, did some research and it is a common winterkill lake so don't expect great fishing, but the scenery is beautiful. Would have liked a simple digital antennae for the TV to get some local stations, maybe watch the news. Overall though a very peaceful and restful vacation. We would definitely go back and stay again.

Owner response: It is true, the local stations would be nice for the nightly news or other viewing during a stay, especially extended stays. Unfortunatly when we went digital we lost the ability, even with a booster to get the Duluth stations, we are about 5 miles out of range. Short of a dish there is nothing we can do to bring in reception, but we keep the monitor for DVD's and VCR's (yes we still have some VHS tapes for guests to enjoy).

If you are looking for a quiet, rustic cabin to relax in, this is the place for you. We were initially disappointed with the musty smell of our linen (we later discovered the bed had not been changed and we changed out the sheets with the extra linen in the closet - also musty [next time we will prob bring our own linen). The uneven floors of the cabin also bothered us. But we quickly adapted and once we got over the old condition of the cabin, we actually really enjoyed our stay. Our kids (ages 5, 7, and 9) loved the paddleboat and fishing off the pier. The catfish and muskeyes were biting so much that evening! A place they will remember forever! Michael, the owner, was also very pleasant to work with! Thanks for a great time!

Owner response: I try to operate from the perspective the customer is always right, and we discussed her concerns; however with all other reviews 5 of 5 I was surprised by the insistance linens were not changed. We have a 100% booking and the young woman who cleans for me did the laundry. The damp smell was a result of 95 degree days with very high humidity so thing were very damp especially with a full rental schedule, cooking cleaning and showers. I have 100% confidence in my cleaner, she has been great, and I had inspected the cabin befor the guest arrived. That said, she did find my supply of back up sheets and changed the linens as indicataed. The cabin is situated on stilts right on the water, so given the seasonal heaving of the frost the cabins shifts, and yes, the floors are not level. We have had the cabin leveled to the extent possible professionally, but yes, some regard it as part of the charm of cabin life. If you are looking at this cottage and have any concerns about these comments I would encourage you to read the other reviews, call me directly or contact another guest about their experience.

A great getaway for our family. We were able to test out new recipes in well stocked kitchen, read peacefully during the quiet evenings listening to the loons, take the boats out during the day, and watch the northern lights a few nights. Incredible sunsets, and peaceful lake. Just what we needed.

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Summer Lane cottage. The location was perfect for us - quiet and peaceful and on the water. It was nice to be able to enjoy all the fun things to do in Duluth, and check out all the sights to see along the lake shore and in the state parks, then retreat to Summer Lane to wind down at the end of a busy day. We must've timed our stay just right, because there was virtually nobody around the lake. We felt like we had the whole area to ourselves, when we opted to just hang out at the lake for part of the day! It was pitch dark and cool at night, which made for great sleeping. A million stars to see in the night sky too, along with spectacular views of lightning from passing storms. Summer Lane is a perfect spot for anyone looking for a place to stay that's off the beaten path, and the cottage has everything needed to enjoy an extended stay.

A very nice cottage right on a lake, with private dock and paddle boat and canoe. The kitchen does indeed have everything you need, the wood stove got nightly use even in May and the wood is well stocked. Caught several nice fish right off of the dock, enjoyed nightly quiet evenings by the fire watching a movie or reading a book. Really a nice place for both the urbanite or country person alike. Close enough to Duluth to justify going up there for lunch or dinner, far enough away from it all that you can truly relax. Owners are extremely nice people, ready to help with anything and really care about their place. Can not say enough nice things about our stay there, every day was a treasure. Hope we can return in the future.

The cottage was terrific! We enjoyed many activities there with our two daughters (5 and 2), including swimming, canoeing, paddle boating, and hiking. It was very relaxing and peaceful to just sit outside, and when the mosquitoes came (they weren't too bad), we enjoyed the screened porch. The place was in great shape and clean. Michael answered all of our questions and gave great advice for navigating the area. He also provided excellent recommendations for activities, such as venturing to the nearby state park. One issue was that behind the trees across the lake is a road from which we could periodically hear a distant rush of trucks. It was not a problem for us as we had a wonderful time! I highly recommend this place.

                      Owner info

                      Year Purchased: 2002

About the owner: My wife and I live 3 driveways down. We purchased our property about 30 years ago as a sesonal home, moved away and came back to make it our permenant residence. We had a chance to purchase this rental property and decided lakeshore was a good investment and it expanded our ability to entertain during the summer months. I work for a children's museum in Duluth and my wife works at the University. The drive is a good time for us to let go of the day and to reconnect. Often when we enter the drive our saying is 'we live here!' Every season someone asks to buy Summer Lane Cottage, which affirms our decision to invest in the property. We keep thinking we will sell someday, but then we enjoy meeting guests from all over the country and beyond and it gives us space for expanding families of relatives who want to visit in the summer. The work of having a rental is offset by the joy of meeting so many folks who truly enjoy this location. We love the setting and we enjoy sharing it. VRBO has made ownership and rental so easy, after two years of 'going it on our own' we signed on to VRBO and have had very few open nights since.

                      Why the Owner Chose Duluth:
We had a chance and went for it. The investment made sense, it needed remodeling and we felt up to the challenge and we hoped it would pay off. It is the nicest piece of property on the lakeshore and we are delighted we made the right decision.

The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
A small lake with only 15 cabins, all located on one side provides a very quiet and private setting. It is close to a lot of state parks, Duluth and all the North Shore has to offer. The privacy of the property and the fun of exploring an area delights most.
