Dunbar-Southlands apartment description
Our fully furnished one bedroom garden suite is located in a Dunbar character home. Dunbar is a lovely neighborhood that is 8 km from both Downtown Vancouver (15 min.) and the University of British Columbia (10 min.). We live on Blenheim St. - a long tree-lined street that runs from Jericho beach to the Fraser river. We're 15 min. from Vancouver Airport.
Our suite is 900 square feet with a private entrance and a full-size in-suite washer/dryer. The suite is set up to provide a home-away-from-home and comes equipped with a a portable BBQ (in addition to a full kitchen). We have two sons (15 & 12 yrs) and as a result have been able to furnish the suite in a way that would appeal much more to children than a hotel room. We can also provide lots of tips on what to do in and around Vancouver...especially with young children. Our house is located two blocks from Dunbar St. with its Community Centre, Movie Theatre, Video stores, Grocery Store, two Used Book Stores and a Public Library.
Our suite is a great base for families whose children will be enrolled in St George's Summer School programs. Information on St George's Summer Programs can be found via google searches on summeratstgeorges.ca/summercamp/ or internationalschool.ca
The University of British Columbia (UBC) also offers an excellent selection of summer camps, including drama camps, sports camps and engineering camps. For further information see:
We love Vancouver and look forward to welcoming you.

Upon arrival at the house, we were surprised to see a garden hose and a pile of weeds strewn over the front sidewalk. The owner was friendly enough, but when it came to finding a duvet or comforter for the beds in the living room, since they weren't already in place, she told us to "look ourselves" in the cupboard! The sheets on the beds didn't feel fresh, and there were stains on the pillows on the bed in the bedroom. A dehumidifying machine was turned on full power when we arrived. We were only able to use the DVD player, since every time we turned on the TV, we received the "No signal" remark. The ad for the suite did not announce that the noise of the fridge turning on and off all night would disturb some people, nor did they mention that exterior lights on all night that were visible from the living room window. The description does not stress ceilings which are a scant 7 ft high. But the icing on the cake came from a peculiar incident. The last night we stayed there, the whole family was awakened at 2:10 AM by the noise of a loud beeping. It took at last 10 min to locate the source of the beeping, after having unplugged all the appliances! It took another 10 min to figure how to turn off the device, which turned out to be a "Carbon Monoxide Monitor"! (The battery needed to be recharged) We became immediately concerned about the presence of such a device in the apartment: if there was no need for it, then why had the owner forgotten it there, and if there was a need, why wasn't it plugged in, and why hadn't the owner explained to us its use and the necessity of keeping windows open to ventilate the apartment? Overall, we certainly would not recommend this apartment. The photos and the description in the announcement do not accurately reflect the actual situation of the amenities described therein.

Owner response: Anne-Marie, I was very surprised to receive your review from VRBO as this was the first time that I heard that you were disappointed with the suite. It is too bad that you did not raise these concerns during your stay as many of them could have been addressed immediately (e.g. advising you how to work the remote so that the TV would work with DVD, VHS and Cable; advising you how to turn off the light outside the suite; reinstalling the curtains if the venetian blinds were not providing sufficient light blockage). Based on your feedback, two changes I plan to make are: 1) Remove the carbon monoxide detector from the suite during summer months. The CO detector provides an additional layer of security when the gas furnace runs during the fall and winter months. I don’t know why the detector was unplugged, or who unplugged it, causing the backup battery to discharge, however to prevent a reoccurence of the problem I plan to remove the detector during the summer months; 2) Ensure that all future guests will plan to have access to their e-mail accounts at least 24 hours prior to their arrival so that welcome instructions, with contact phone numbers and instructions for accessing the suite can be received. I am sorry that you did not enjoy your stay with us. Since we began with VRBO in 2007 you are the first to give us negative review. Sincerely, Gordon

Park was such a gem
Thank you so much for our stay. Our two little boys and their two friends loved walking planks (tree stumps) and making up pirate adventures out back and loved the movie selection their "vacation house" offered. The adults loved the cozy place to spend our annual vacation together & the park was such a gem + bonus. What we appreciated most was your hospitality and kindness. Thank you for the welcome signs, the folder of information and the personal recommendations of things to do and see in Vancouver. Thanks again! 5 year old Grant's comment: "My favorite part was all the great movies they had. I liked the hockey room, it was cool!"

Home away from home
Dear Anne & Gordon, Thanks for letting us have a home far away from home. No words can express your kind hospitality. We were lucky to get to know people like you and your lovely children. Kind regards, Jona & Uri

We came, the entire family all the way from Slovakia to attend our son's graduation ceremony. The entire week was beautiful, especially the ceremony, as well as the many attractions the city offers and the evenings in your apartment that felt like home. If we come back to Vancouver again, we will definitely stay at this place again. Thanks to the Dobson-Mack family.

Hello, GordonThank you for your kind message and letting us use your suite for eight days. It was great opportunity for us to stay there than any other room in hotel and actually we really enjoy ‘normal life in Canada’. We felt like staying the suite with kitchenette in hotel (More than that.) Both my kids were very happy because they played a hockey there and especially my son had an experience to play with your children (although it was a short time.) and to learn how to use a hockey stick. The suite got all we needed including coffee, tea, and equipment including appliances – a rice cooker was excellent, as we thought we should use a small pan to cook steam rice for our children before coming to Canada.Thank you again for letting us make a wonderful memory of Vancouver.I wish you and your family all of the very best.Naoki PS I’d like to recommend my friends your suite although you might want to have guests from many other countries.
