The House: Relax in Comfort!
Kehena Treetop Bungalow is a tropical paradise, nestled in amongst lush green foliage and fruit trees. This home has been completely remodeled from top to bottom, and is new inside and out. You’re going to enjoy the beautifully refinished hardwood floors and the fresh new décor. This house is the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of the traditional vacation areas, so forget about having to fight traffic and congestion with other visitors. When you’re not out enjoying the beauty and experiences of the Big Island, you’ll enjoy staying “home” and lounging on the lanai in the hammock, or just sitting at the table reading a good book. You’ll spend your vacation knowing you are in a special place in the world.
Perfect for a couple or family, the one bedroom in the bungalow is HUGE and easily accommodates the two queen beds, wardrobe, desk, and walk-in closet, with lots of room to spare! And the futons in the living room can provide additional sleeping space for children, if needed. Free Wifi and basic cable, along with a selection of books and DVDs (for both adults and children) are available for your entertainment.
A full kitchen is well equipped with all your cooking and dining needs, including a blender, microwave, and rice cooker. With a 4-person dining table, additional pub-style table in the kitchen, and breakfast bar, there is ample space for dining in comfort. And while this house, like most of the island, is on a water-catchment system, the home features a top-of-the-line water filtration and UV purification system, so you can safely drink from the tap, wash your fruit and veggies, or brush your teeth without concern.
In addition to the inside bathroom with shower, an additional screened outside shower (complete with hot water) allows you to easily rinse off the sand from the beach while enjoying the sounds of nature. You’ve got it all in Paradise!
Finally, for those with young children, the house is provisioned with a pack n play, infant bathtub, infant play activity mat, high chair, and a TON of toys and books. Make travel with children easy!
Local Attractions:
Kehena Bungalow Treehouse is located on the famous “Red Road”, which is one of the most beautiful and historic drives in the state of Hawaii. Along this road you can see lava flows, lush tropical fruit trees and orchids, incredible blue ocean vistas, spinner dolphins, green turtles, and in season, whales!
Eating/Shopping/Markets: Historic Kalapana Village, overtaken by the 1990 lava flow, is just a 5 minute drive west from the Bungalow. Kalapana village currently hosts a Kava bar and restaurant (with tasty fresh fish and fruit dishes!) that are open daily, a small farmer/artist market once per week, and a great little hiking trail out to a newly forming black sand beach (no swimming here). Pahoa Village with restaurants (Italian, Mexican, Thai, American), grocery shopping, and farmer’s markets is about a 15 minute drive. Hilo, about a 40 minute drive, also has everything you might need to buy at basic stores such as Safeway, Target, and Walmart, as well as an AMAZING farmers/artist market held several times a week.
Swimming/Snorkeling/Surf: The house is a block from the Big Blue Pacific Ocean, and a 5 minute walk to the Kehena Black Sand Beach (clothing optional) where you can sometimes swim with dolphins! For those interested in surfing or boogie boarding, a 10 minute drive gets you to nearby Mackenzie State Park and Isaac Hale Beach Park, which are great spots to watch the locals (and green turtles!) ride the waves. Also in this area is Ahalanui Warm Spring Park, where 90 degree geothermally heated waters at the ocean edge are available for year-round relaxation. The warm spring is semi-developed, and connected to the ocean through a rock-wall channel for daily water turnover to keep it clean. It’s wonderful anytime, but especially on cooler days, or for children that want warmer water or a more “pool-like” ocean experience. Finally, a 15 minute drive will get you to the wonderful Kapoho Tide pools, where swimming and snorkeling are incredible, and you might even see a green turtle! If you wish to explore further or have to run to “the city”, Hilo has some nice swimming/snorkeling beaches as well. The very adventurous can cruise up out for a day trip to famous Waipi’o Valley in about 1.5 hrs, past Volcano NP to Punalu’u Black Sand Beach or South Point in 1.5-2hrs, or over to the west side Kohala beaches in about 2-2.5 hours.
Various beach “toys” such as boogie boards, swim noodles, rudimentary snorkeling gear, beach mats, etc are provided at the house for guests to use.
Hiking/Walking/Lava viewing: For a quick and easy early-morning jaunt, there is a “local access” cliff/iron wood forest walk 5 minutes from the house, or just stroll around the neighborhood admiring the lush vegetation, flowers, and low-hanging fruit! About a 15 minute drive is Lava Tree State Park, where you can see some amazing volcanic creations along a beautiful short walk that is great for all ages. Kalapan village has a lovely walk across the lava to a newly forming black sand beach, which is just perfect after one of their amazing breakfasts or dinners. Hawaii volcanoes national park is a 40-45 minute drive, and that area hosts an amazing array of trails inside and outside the park (and don’t miss wine-tasting at the winery!). Closer by, the state of Hawaii manages a lava viewing area (lava activity dependent on the whims of the Goddess Pele!) about a 10 minute drive from the house. In addition, a boat charter can be booked that leaves from nearby Isaac Hale to watch lava flowing into the ocean (volcano-activity dependent)! If you wish to range further from home, the Hilo area also has some nice waterfalls and lava tubes to explore.
Pana’ewa Rainforest Zoo and Gardens: Those with (or without!) children may like to visit the Hawaii Zoo, which is open daily and located between Hilo and Keauu…perhaps 25-30 minutes from the Kehena house. This little gem is free to the public, quite tastefully done with beautifully landscaped walks, and well cared for wildlife in ample-sized enclosures. You can even watch them feed the tiger at designated times, or arrive during petting-zoo hours! It also hosts an enormous sun-shielded playground.
Fishing: in Hawaii you don’t need a license for recreational fishing, even if you are from out of state! A fishing pole is provided at the house, and the nearby beach cliffs and ocean access make fishing access easy! Try your luck to catch a fresh dinner!

Wow! Mark and Ron are old school customer service elite. Very satisfied with them and our stay. Loved the outside shower but if you take one at night bring a citronella candle so you don't get skeeter bites! The location was so close to so many cool places....hit my first clothing optional beach which was "interesting". The hardest part was climbing down the rocks and not tumbling down. Excellent time!Recommended for: Girls getaway, sightseeing, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.
Owner response: Mahalo nui for your kind words. So happy to hear that you are enjoying yourselves at the Treetop Bungalow. We certainly aim at 100% guest satisfaction. Mahalo for choosing to stay with us and we hope you come back and see us again soon. Mark and Ron, management team of Hawaiian Paradise Vacation Rentals
