Kilauea cottage description
A guest comment says it best. 'If you want a beautiful hideaway, this is it!! The grounds are wonderful, like a private park. Its quiet, relaxed and absolutely a wonderful retreat. Close to the main road yet far enough away so you never hear traffic, beaches a mile or so away and many good restaurants as well as grocery stores nearby. We liked it so much we extended our stay and will always cherish the memories of our time there. Truly a place of the “aloha spirit.”' - Guest comment

Best part of our Honeymoon
Best part of our Honeymoon
We had a short but sweet stay at Hale Kokio while adventuring through Kauai. The owners went out of their way to make it a special experience. The grounds are as quiet and private as we had hoped. We had the hotel/condo experience while visiting with friends on other parts of the island, so it was great to have time in a more "home-y" environment. We felt like the chickens were just part of the Kauai experience, and weren't bothered by them in the least. We met a sweet little kitty while grilling one night. She(?) was super friendly, and made us miss our kitties back home:( Speaking of grilling, we love to cook, and were beyond pleased with the well-stocked kitchen. Everything we needed and nothing we didn't:) I especially appreciated the coffee grinder. Nothing better in the world than early morning coffee and a porch. The bed was super comfy, and we loved sleeping with the windows open to let in the breeze and fall asleep to chirping critters. Can't wait to return for a longer stay one day!

Owner response: We are always happy to hear that Hale Kokio is appreciated for the care we provide to our guests, the amenities available and the opportunity to relax in the comfortable cottage and pretty grounds. Most of all, knowing that the property served as your little bit of paradise while on Kauai. We look forward to return visitors and new guests wishing for their own retreat on the magnificent North Shore of Kauai.
A peaceful, beautiful place...
A peaceful, beautiful place...
Hale Kokio was gorgeous and just what I needed. I was traveling by myself and had gone a long time without a break. I just wanted stillness and to hear the surf and birds in the trees. Everything about the cottage was as advertised. When I got there, Rob and Lisa left a bowl with fruit from trees on the property. The sounds of birds in the trees, strolling around the rolling lawn and the exquisite night skies all stay with me now, months later. I don't have to say how beautiful Kauai is. I spent a week seeing the sights; snorkeling, hiking, and I know I barely scratched the surface. I'm grateful that Hale Kokio and Kauai were there for me. As I get thrown back into the world, I will have a little place of peace in my heart from my vacation on Kauai. Till the next time, Aloha. Sam

Owner response: Hale Kokio is designed to welcome guests with amentities and improvements that we provide. The natural beauty of Kauai provides the magnificent setting. Our guests make the difference, being able to see, relax and enjoy the property and all it offers. We often hear comments that Hale Kokio is a home away from home. Even better is to know is that you have taken "Hale Kokio" home with you! (Come back and enjoy the sunsets viewed from the small hill at the end of the property!)
Great location, nicely appointed & maintained - very affordable
Great location, nicely appointed & maintained - very affordable
Wife and I had the pleasure of staying at this cute cottage for 12 nights. We have found we don't like island hopping and prefer an extended stay at one place so the cottage fit the bill perfectly. I wish the December reviewers (and owners response) were online when I was there as I too had lukewarm water (shower and faucet) and didn't know the secret to on demand water heating. Was not a big issue for us though - might suggest the owners post a note about this in the (very helpful) notebook they maintain in the cottage. Cottage was very clean, kitchen well stocked (utensils, etc.), abundant number of towels/wash cloths, plenty of blankets (like more than one is req'd in Kauai), hot tub was great (it does take about 12 hours to reach 102F so allow that time). Can't think of a single thing we did not like about the place. Would be nice if there was a protected place for the outdoor grill since in Kauai you ARE going to get rained on & we are big "grillers". Nice that there were beach chairs made available as we logged many, many beach hours in them. We travel to the islands each January so are used to the chickens/roosters to the point we no longer hear them and would probably miss them if not there but be aware - they can get a tad loud. Cottage is in a nice location but as soon as you get there be sure to discover the back route thru Kapaa as the traffic going thru Koloa on the Kuhio is incredibly bad. Nicely located for activities (played the Wailua and Puakea golf courses while there), Foodland deli (Princeville) makes great sandwiches (Foodland Kapaaa not as great but good), very funky breakfast place in Hanalei (Wake Up Cafe) that we enjoyed (fast service & only semi grumpy owner this time) but most meals we prepared at "home". All in all - great place, great vacation, owners very helpful to us while never be intrusive, would recommend this for those seeking privacy and if you (like us) go to great lengths to avoid that dreadful resort condo experience. Lastly - great spinner dolphin and humpback watching just from the shorelines (and at the lighthouse) - bring binoculars.

Owner response: Thank you for sharing your tips and favorites about Kauai and for your kind words about Hale Kokio. We have learned that the more our guests know about the island, the more they enjoy their stay. Glad the notebook of hints and favorites is helpful, we will add your your note about the alternate route. For clarity, the water temperature was adjusted just as soon as our guests reported the problem.
Charming cottage, convenient
Charming cottage, convenient
This is a charming cottage nestled in a jungle-like yard. It's very private and only about 20 minutes to Hanalei. If you like the privacy of a more rural, residential setting but close to the main towns, this is it. Like the others have said, the interior is very-well appointed. The kitchen and bathroom are upgraded. The couch is stylish and the bed comfortable. There is also a brand-new washer-dryer stackable and new beach chairs. It's clear that the owners care for this place. The only negatives: The chickens of Kauai are like pigeons in Paris. Ubiquitous. I see owner responses saying they are gone, they were out in force during our stay. The roosters crowed at 3:30-4:30am, depending on the day, then again from 6 to 7am. Sleeping in on vacation was not an option here. Also, the faucet water is lukewarm. The owner said they'd just put in a new water heater, but we found the water to be on the cool side of warm even after running it for a few minutes. The hottub is kept on a low temperature (probably electricity costs) so you'll need to crank it up and let it get hot for about a day before you use it. Our first night in the hottub was a total let-down due to the lack of jet power and the temperature. Otherwise, it's a charming place. We liked the convenient location, quaintness and price.

Owner response: Hale Kokio is a bright and well appointed property. We appreciate that visitors notice the effort and care we provide to the property and our guests. The grounds are continuously maintained providing a tropical park like setting. Our cleaning process is more than just a simple pass through, we pay attention to all details. From time to time, the hot tub needs to be drained and refilled to maintain water quality. It can take up to a day to come back up to temperature. Settings for heat and jets are adjusted by guests. Our water system is on demand, a popular and reliable way to provide hot water. We will post a note to make sure that our guests know to turn the water off then on if the water does not heat immediately. Kauai has lots of roosters. This is just a fact of life. We will top the trees where they have roosted in the past to discourage their return. We pay close attention to our guests comments to insure that any concerns are addressed and that the Hale Kokio continuously improves for all Since we are near to the property, we are available to address any concerns or problems that arise. If you are visiting, let us know if you need help, so we can provide a solution and keep you smiling!
We can't say enough about how wonderful this place is. The house has everything you need and more. You are surrounded by beautiful tress, plants and flowers right in the back yard. It was great sitting on top of a small hill every evening watching the sun set behind the mountains. Even though there is a lot to do on Kauai, some days we just relaxed at the house soaking in the hot tub and listening to the birds. As with all the other reviews of Hale Kokio, you will be very glad that you stayed here. We look forward to returning someday.

Owner response: Oh, the perfect guests for Hale Kokio are those who allow time to stop and explore the natural beauty of Kauai. Enjoying the sunset from our side yard is a perfect example. We will leave the chairs just where you placed them as an invitation to future guests to catch a glimpse of the night sky. We always appreciate feedback and this note is much appreciated. Wonderful Honeymoon Homebase!
My husband and I spent an amazing week at Hale Kokio for our honeymoon. It was quiet, peaceful, and remote-feeling yet close to everything - just what we were looking for! Very clean, and we even had an orchid bouquet and a bowl of lychees waiting for us upon our arrival. Highly recommended!

Wonderful week on Kauai
Wonderful week on Kauai
My wife and I recently returned from a week at this cottage. I appreciated the fact that the owners do not employ a management company. We dealt directly with Eleanor by phone and email in New York before we arrived and her son, Rob, lives very near this rental property. They provided all the information we needed. Rob was available while we were there, but did not intrude in any way. His darling 7-year old daughter stopped by a couple of times with fruit and flowers she had picked. An added benefit! The cottage was very clean, nicely furnished and very comfortable. The kitchen was surprisingly well equipped and there was a small, but adequate gas grill that we used a number of times to grill the incredible fish available locally. We also appreciated the two beach chairs, beach umbrellas and snorkeling gear. The cottage is in a great location--beautiful surroundings and a short drive from Kilauea where you'll find great baked goods, lunches and coffee at Kilauea Bakery. There's a good fish market in Kilauea as well. We visited the farmers' market at Hanalei on Saturday, the day after we arrived and stocked up on wonderful local vegetables and fruit. The north shore of Kauai is incredible beautiful and there are great beaches for swimming and snorkeling nearby. Hiking was also a favorite activity. Why not an excellent rating? Two reasons. One really can't be blamed on the cottage or its owners. Kauai is home to many chickens that have become wild. We awakened the first morning to a cacophony of sounds from the roosters crowing after only a few hours of sleep. Rob chased roosters our of the trees in our yard in the evenings, but good earplugs are a necessity. My wife is a light sleeper so we had to close all the windows each night as well--luckily it was cool and the fans kept us comfortable. Second, finding the driveway in the dark the first night was difficult. All of the houses on this road have mailboxes and well-defined driveways. This property has neither. We laughed at ourselves the next morning when we saw the entrance in daylight, but it wasn't fun to find in the dark after 12 hours air travel and a 35 minute drive from the airport. We'll be back--we loved the cottage and this area of the island.

Owner response: Here again a generous description of features and amenities found at Hale Kokio. Add to that a convenient location to the Town of Kilauea including great shops, bakery, the newly opened Healthy Hut, twice weekly farmers markets, hiking, snorkling and you have Kauai living at its best. As noted by your comments, a family of chickens did come through the property and selected the Shower Tree for nesting. They are a fact of life on Kauai and when they do come through the property it is for a very short stay. As I write this, they are gone. We always appreciate feedback and will consider a tasteful way to mark the entrance to the driveway then add that to our detailed driving instructions. Mahalo

Our reviews of Hale Kokio could not be any better! The home is gorgeous, extremely clean, in a great location but still with a feeling of seclusion that was welcomed after long days of playing. I would consider this to be a "home" and not a house because the furnishings and decorations didn't feel like the owners just threw whatever was needed to rent the place but went out of the way to make it comfortable, warm and very inviting. To say the least we DID NOT WANT TO LEAVE!! The North Shore has so much to offer and we are looking forward to returning very soon. The extra bonuses of Hale Kokio are: washer and dryer, snorkeling gear in a variety of sizes, beach chairs and a beach umbrella, dvds, cds and books are well stocked, the wonderful jacuzzi, the gorgeous porch views and the most adorable friendly outdoor cat that lounges in the sun on the deck. LOVE LOVE LOVED IT!!

Owner response: Thank you for sharing your comments about Hale Kokio. We continuously maintain and upgrade the property, the cottage and amenities for the comfort of our guests. This year we are adding additional fruit trees and colorful plants to our gardens You have said it all, sparking clean cottage, views of the grounds from the hot tub and lanai, welcome amenities include music library and beach supplies. We take pride in Hale Kokio. Thanks for noticing.
My husband and I weren't able to go on a honeymoon right after we got married. 3 years later we decided to go to Hawaii and chose the island of Kauai for our romantic retreat. What a wonderful cottage! It is clean, well maintained, and has everything you could think of- umbrella, snorkel gear, extra towels! We loved going to Hanalei Dolphin Fish Market-picking up some fresh fish, and grilling it for dinner. We recommend the Monchung and Opah. Pricey but these fish are caught on a hand line. So delicious! Must sees: the lighthouse, tunnels beach, wet and dry caves, north shore beaches. Must dos: snorkeling in Poipu, ATV adventures, Nanea- Chocolate Tour, Luau. And so much more. I wish we could have stayed longer than a week. There is so much to explore on the island, so much to see and experience. We loved the fact that if we wanted to go to the more tourist-y locations on the island, we could, but at the end of the day go back to our private escape. So relaxing. The only disappointment was that the hot tub was broken during our stay. Bob did put a service call in and was trying to fix it. Otherwise, everything was just wonderful! Thank you for sharing your island home with us. We will be back for sure!

About the owner: Our family is interested in gardening, fishing, photography and music and generally being near the ocean. In our travels, we discovered Kauai is perfect for these activities. Some family members call Kauai home, others of us visit as often as we can. Our community is welcoming, lifestyle is simple and the beauty of the island abundant. What more can we ask for, walks on the beach, cultivating our gardens, sharing harvests with friends, music by the fire, preparing meals of fresh fish and local produce.
Why the Owner Chose Kilauea:
We visited Kauai a number of times before our decision to purchase Hale Kokio in 2006. The property was in the perfect location, showcased the natural beauty of the North Shore in a neighborhood that was developing in authentic island style. The grounds were so pretty and the design was perfect for additional planting and cultivation. We all decided that this was just the right place for us.
