Serene, remote get-away located in the heart of the Superior National Forest equal distance from Ely, Minnesota and Lake Superior's North Shore; quietly located three miles off scenic State Highway #1.
Beautiful year-around log home (cabin) in Lake County, Stoney River Township on North McDougal Lake, part of a chain of three lakes covering 849 acres. The property has 210 feet of shoreline at the southeast corner of the lake. The McDougal Lakes area is very quiet so jet skis, ATV's or large motor boats are out of character. However, canoes, kayaks, and fishing boats fit right in. A canoe, kayak, paddles, Lund fishing boat, Yamaha 15 hp outboard motor with electric start and life jackets are provided. You can also bring your own boat. There is a concrete-base boat landing 3 miles from the cabin for launching your boat, and there is a dock and 1200 lb. max. boat lift for your use at the rental property. Swimming is very good in the Summer months. Some kind of water shoes will add to your comfort while swimming.
This 1600 sq. ft. home has the feel of a cabin yet all the amenities of modern living. Whether you enjoy the serenity of a walk through the beautiful boreal forest, the warmth of sitting in the cabin by the wood-burning fireplace, or the contentment of having breakfast at the lakeside picnic table and fire pit you are sure to enjoy your stay. The cabin is very comfortable and you will feel right at home.
Watch the Chickadees, Nuthatches, Canadian Jays, and Humming Birds at the feeders. Sometimes the Chickadees, Nuthatches, and Jays will eat right out of your hand. Spacious decks and screened and covered porches allow you to enjoy all parts of the day. Sit in the warm sun with your cup of coffee in the morning; enjoy inviting water views throughout the day; and experience dazzling sunsets and listen to the loons in the evening. At night watch the stars pop out. Have you ever seen the Milky Way in all its splendor?
If you plan on spending your entire time at the cabin, it's a good idea to bring some supplies with you. The cabin is in a rather remote location. The nearest towns for groceries, restaurants, gas, etc. are Finland 27 miles, Silver Bay 32 miles, Babbitt 25 miles, Ely 32 miles and Two Harbors 48 miles. All towns offer restaurants and groceries, and some have unique shops and galleries. Ely and Two Harbors offer clinics, pharmacies and emergency rooms. The owners live in a cabin near by and will do their best to provide any items you may have forgotten.
You can spend all your time at the cabin and surrounding area; or use the cabin as a base camp and venture out on one-day excursions to the North Shore, nearby Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA) Lakes, Hiking Trails, Golfing, Downhill and Cross-Country Skiing, Snowmobiling, and much more. Within a 20-mile radius there are hiking trails, several BWCA entry points, numerous fishing lakes and non-BWCA back-country camping sites.
Be sure to check out White Wilderness Dog Sledding just five miles from the cabin.
Thank you for your interest!

Northwoods Lake Home

Why the Owner Chose Isabella
McDougal Lake is located half way between the Northshore and Ely, Minnesota. Just 32 miles to Ely and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area; and 35 miles to Minnesota's beautiful Northshore and many State Parks.
The Unique Benefits at this Cabin
We mostly enjoy just being at home taking in all that living up north on a lake in the middle of the Superior National Forest has to offer. The views of the lake and sunsets are breathtaking. A peaceful walk through the woods or sitting outside on a star-filled night are a couple of our favorite pastimes. I've also enjoyed hiking on the Superior Hiking Trail, Dog-Sledding, and Cross-Country Skiing.
One of many BWCA entry points is on Perent Lake.
First Class dog sledding operation just five miles from cabin
Owner's Map of Isabella
We grew up in Southern Minnesota. Through the years, we both enjoyed camping, canoeing, and fishing in Northern Minnesota. So when our youngest son gradulated from college, we decided to move.

We just can't say enough about this place! From the second we walked in it felt like "home". It has everything you'll ever need except clothes & food! We had a blast kayaking, canoeing, boating, hiking, fishing, relaxing by the fire, playing games, and soaking in the hot tub. The kids really enjoyed all the wildlife... we had otters playing by the dock & eagles flying overhead! We also saw hummingbirds, chickadees, loons, deer, chipmunks, squirrels, ravens, snakes & turkey vultures. This cabin really is great! Thanks Bill & Gail for sharing your cabin with us. We will definately be back!
Owner response:Thank you Ben, Julie and Kids for the really nice testimonial. We get a lot of satisfaction knowing our guests enjoyed their stay. Sincerely, Bill and Gail

My husband and I just returned from a wonderful week at your delightful cabin. We were joined by my brother and his family and also my sister. The cabin was everything it was advertised and more. We enjoyed fishing (caught enough for a super fish fry), hiking and sitting by the fire both inside and out. Thank you for a terrifice place to relax.

Great lakeside getaway in classic Minnesota Northern lakes country. Every aspect of our experience exceeded expectations -- the owners have truly thought of everything to make guests feel at home. We were looking for a quiet location for a mini family reunion, and it was perfect. I would recommend this property to anyone.

Our family stayed over Memorial Day weekend, the weather was beautiful as well as the home!! We had plenty to do, fished, boated, canoed, played bean bag, hot tub and much more. The home is very spacious and perfect for our family of 4 and some friends. We hope to return again soon!

Just returned from 4 wonderful days at the lake home. It was everything advertised and more. Lots of room for all and a variety of things to keep everyone entertained. Fishing was fun, great hot tub and just lots of ways to relax. I'd highly recommend a moonlight canoe ride if you have the nice weather and a full moon like we did. Much thanks to the Vagts for providing such a great cabin and being such great hosts.

Gail and Bill, We had a fabulous time. We fished, kayaked, went boating and had a blast on the floating innertubes. The hot tub was fine too. You have a gorgeous place. The workmanship and all the thoughtful planning and design is impressive. We'll be back and thank you for opening your home as a rental cabin for all of us to enjoy.

September 12-14 2008 We had the pleasure of spending a long weekend in the lake home. An absolutely beautiful location: we spent the days soaking up peace and quiet. We loved watching the birds at the feeder, and even got a chipmunk to eat sunflower seeds out of our hands! Cool fall nights were spent in the hot tub and in front of a crackling fire. All in all a perfect stay. We'll be back sooner rather than later.

Bill and Gail,I wanted to write and let you know that we had a wonderful time staying at your place. It was fantastic. I’ve been to a lot of remote Northwood’s destinations and yours nearly tops this list. We were looking for a little relaxation and we got it. We caught some fish everyday, small pike and a few walleye, cooked huge meals, had some beers, played in the snow, drove the back roads looking for moose, and played a lot of games. It was the perfect break from daily stress of our jobs, and our girlfriends were happy to go north without the tents for a change too. We had all the comforts of home there. Thanks, Ben
