Hang Ten, Chill Out, Go Native, “Is that a real monkey?”
Nosara, The way Costa Rica used to be, today!
Note: Casa de Memphis I is the number one listed VRBO rental house out of 160 rental houses in Nosara for two reasons. Location and quality of the house and up keep. The reviews, the most of any house, speak for themselves while the airline pilot owner goes down every other month to the house and the sister house Casa de Memphis II to keep both in great working order. No easy feat in this location and in this environment. Be sure and check the calendar for availability and remember that the other Casa de Memphis II is just around the corner from this one. (Number 4 out of 160 VRBO rental houses in Nosara)
Casa de Memphis is located in the northern corner of Nosara’s Playa Pelada where the Ostional Wildlife Reserve and the Nosara River meet the Pacific Ocean at front door. While Playa (Beach) Pelada is very secluded, it is still convenient to shopping and the other amenities. If you do not mind a troop of monkeys living in the trees above and an array of birds not commonly found in a front yard, this is the place for you. (Some would refer to the location as “Critter Central”.) Beach, wildlife, peace and quiet, and very few people. (Just look over the photos and see for yourself.) Located within a small group of eight houses, only four available for rent, at the north entrance of this secluded beach. Because very few people know about this small enclave, you will almost always have the whole secluded section of Playa Pelada to yourself. And it does not stop there.
You have the whole beach to yourself as you walk down the beach to one of the finest restaurants in the state of Guanacaste, La Luna. As you walk to La Luna, you can check out the tidal pools and the marine aquarium left by the tide. Every hour the beach area offers up a new setting as the tide comes in and out. Playa Pelada is the best place to swim of the three beaches in Nosara and kids can't get enough of the tidal pools. The reason for this is that there is a reef just offshore that tames the swell.
On the way to La Luna you will pass the only beach bar in Nosara, Olga's. La Luna and Olga’s are located at the south entrance of Playa Pelada and this is where the small fishing boats come in and out of and is also a great local surfing spot. If you walk down there early in the morning you can buy fish directly from the fishermen as come in at embarrassingly low prices. (This is a local hangout as very few people/tourist know about this entrance.)
Casa de Memphis I (Remember there are two Casa de Memphis’, I and II) was constructed in 2007 and is a fully air conditioned beach house with two master bedrooms, each with its own massive bathroom, vaulted ceiling, private walkout balcony and a King and Queen size bed with new mattresses as of 2014. The bigger of the two bedrooms has a bunk bed off to the side carved into its own area. (All mattresses have insect proof bed encasements.)The house is fully furnished and equipped for a party of 6. The houses sits behind a secure gated entrance at the end of the road with secure off street parking. No through traffic as you sit on the front porch and try and figure out what kind of humming bird that is. As of January 2009, the house has high speed, wireless internet.
Casa de Memphis is set up for the weekly renter. Very child friendly with a crib and high chair. (Because of the way the house is constructed it is hard for children to do any real damage, although some have tried.) The house comes with High Speed Wireless Internet, cable TV, linens, a full size safe for your valuables (large and small, i.e. laptop computers) that weighs 500 pounds and is bolted to the floor, weekly house cleaning, beach chairs, beach towels, monkeys, and they are all included at no extra charge. The house is managed by a couple that live just up the hill and are always on hand to answer a question or take care of something. There is even a comprehensive black book with loads of information about the house and the area that is regularly updated by the owner. Everything you need is already there. Beach chairs, beach towels and much much more.......
Tired of cooking? We can arrange for a private chef to do all of the shopping, come to the house and prepare the menu of your choice at a mere fraction of what dinning out would be. This is the best bargain in Nosara and the wife of the owner of the house takes full advantage of this. Imagine, someone comes to the house at 17:00 (5PM), cleans, prepares dinner, cleans up afterwards and departs by 20:00 (8PM). All this for much less than taking the family out for dinner. Tell us what you want and we will make it happen. (Most people choose to take advantage of this for the night of the day they arrive.)
NOTE: Nosara, like many other beach communities, is experiencing a building boom. The northern end of Playa Pelada, where the house is located, is the only location free from the early morning construction noise, truck traffic and the associated dust. Dust is a serious issue from December to May due to the lack of rain. While there is very little traffic in front of the house we still apply molasses to the road out front to seal off the dust. (Place smells like pancakes for the first week.)
Security: Costa Ricans are by nature a very passive people. That said petty theft is an on going issue that has subsided greatly in the last year. Nothing neutralizes this issue more than common since. CdM I & II have monitored alarm systems and industrial size safes. No other house available for rent has this level of security.
Booking: There are two ways to book Casa de Memphis I or II. VIA THE OWNER: simply send the owner an email (email@example.com) stating which house and what dates you want. His reply will confirm the dates and the rate. If this is agreeable then the owner will send you a rental agreement to print out, read, sigh and return with a deposit in the form of a US dollar check or Canadian post order. All funds and transactions are in US dollars. 60 days prior to your arrival you will send in the whole rental fee. Your deposit converts to a security deposit and is refunded back to you after you depart. The other way to book the house is VIA CREDIT CARD: VRBO now has a “book it now” feature where you can use a credit card for the whole process. You will be required to purchase a $49 security deposit policy that is non refundable. The choice is yours.

In Costa Rica, no one is allowed to build within 200 meters of the high tide line, the exclusion zone, unless a concession has been granted for the furthest 50 meters. This concession is where the condos have been built that have ruined such destinations as Tamarindo and Jaco. There are no and will never be condos inside the 200 meters in Nosara, just jungle. The house sits on the 200 meter mark. Casa de Memphis is right at the short trail head to the beach. It is a 30 second walk to the beach with monkeys and all kinds of wildlife residing in the exclusion zone. All of this means that the beach is in a natural setting. Jungle, sand, ocean, as it should be! No concrete...moreless

Year Purchased: 2007
About the owner: David & Mary Caywood have owned Casa de Memphis since the year it was built back in 2007. Mary is a professor at the University of Memphis while David flies for FedEx. The management company that looks after the house is owned by Tiffany and Frank and they have a staff of about 20 employees. With Frank being German and David an airline pilot they have come together with the following management program. “Correct it before it breaks. Repair it when it does. Remove it when you can’t.” This attitude alone is one of the reasons why everyone goes away planning their return and the guest comments reflect just that. The one down side to David & Mary’s beach house, it is often booked up well in advance but if you are flexible, they can usually get you in. BE SURE AND SCROLL DOWN TO SEE THE PHOTOS AND COMMENTS.
Why the Owner Chose Nosara:
We were looking to move down to Costa Rica and began the process of looking for a new home. We literally got out a map and started going down the Pacific coast doing a Google search on each and every town on the map. When we saw large scale concrete high rise buildings, the search moved on. Unfortunately, what we were looking for in Costa Rica, was long gone until we happened upon Nosara. Nosara is best described as a perfect mix of human existence in a natural setting. The monkeys do not run from you but stare back. The beach is natural and there are no buildings to be seen and best of all because there are no large scale condominium projects. You basically have the place to yourself and that is why we bought the house where we did. And the name, Casa de Memphis? It came about as a product of need. As in most of Central and South America, there are no addresses, instead every house has a name. We wanted a name that best described the house and location but they were already taken. Next we wanted a name that gringos could remember. Also take into consideration the fact that people in Nosara do not use there last name and we were quickly referred to as David and Mary from Memphis and in the absence of anything else, Casa de Memphis it became.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Location, Location, Location and the house is the best example of just that. On the beach, by the river, next to the wildlife preserve. Families with children are especially attracted to the house because they are just steps away from the beach, jungle and all of the animals Costa Rica has to offer. The animals are actually best seen from the front porch while sitting in one of the four rocking chairs. Highly addictive, no cure!
