Location: Nosara, Guanacaste, Costa Rica, Central America (Playa Pelada, Nosara, 2 hr drive from Liberia Int. Airport) View Map

Accommodations:  House, 2 Bedrooms + Bunk Area, 2.5+ Baths (Sleeps 6)

Hang Ten, Chill Out, Go Native, “Is that a real monkey?”

Casa de Memphis is located in the northern corner of Playa Pelada where the Ostional Wildlife Reserve meets the Pacific Ocean and your front door. While Casa de Memphis is very secluded, it is still convenient to shopping and the other amenities. If you do not mind a troop of monkeys living in the trees above and an array of birds not commonly found in a front yard, this is the place for you. (Some would refer to the location as “Critter Central”.) Beach, wildlife, peace and quiet, and no other people. (Just look over the photos and see for yourself.)

The whole beach is yours as you walk down the beach to one of the finest restaurants in the state of Guanacaste, La Luna. As you walk to La Luna, check out the tidal pools and the marine aquarium left by the tide. Every hour the beach area offers up a new setting as the tide comes in and out. Playa Pelada is the best place to swim of the three beaches in Nosara and kids can't get enough of the tidal pools.

This newly constructed, fully air conditioned beach house has two master bedrooms, each with its own massive bathroom, queen size bed, vaulted ceiling and private walkout balcony. The bigger of the two bedrooms has a bunk bed off to the side carved into its own area. The house is fully furnished and equipped for a party of 6. The houses sits behind a secure gated entrance at the end of the road with secure off street parking. No through traffic as you sit on the front porch and try and figure out what kind of humming bird that is. As of January 2009, the house has high speed, wireless internet.

For those who want to cool off by the pool simply walk out the back door, through the gate and enjoy the huge luxury pool equipped with a sauna, pavilion and swim-up bar. The pool is part of a very small complex made up of condos and because they are 2nd homes, no one is ever there. You have the whole place to yourself, just like the beach.

Casa de Memphis is set up for the weekly renter. Very child friendly with a crib and high chair. (Because of the way the house is constructed it is hard for children to do any real damage, although some have tried.) High Speed Wireless Internet, linens, a full size safe for your valuables(large and small), weekly house cleaning, monkeys, and they are all included at no extra charge. The house is managed by a couple that live just up the hill and are always on hand to answer a question or take care of something. There is even a comprehensive scrap book with loads of information about the house and the area. Everything you need is already there. AS OF NOVEMBER 2008, BEACH CHAIRS AND BEACH TOWELS ARE PROVIDED AT NO ADDITIONAL COST.

Tired of cooking? We can arrange for a private chef to do all of the shopping, come to the house and prepare the menu of your choice at a mere fraction of what dinning out would be. This is the best bargain in Nosara and the wife of the owner of the house takes full advantage of this. Imagine, someone comes to the house at 15:00 (3PM), cleans, prepares dinner, cleans up afterwards and departs by 20:00 (8PM). Cost: $25 plus groceries. Tell us what you want and we will make it happen.

NOTE: Nosara, like many other beach communities, is experiencing a building boom. The northern end of Playa Pelada, where the house is located, is the only location free from the early morning construction noise, truck traffic and the associated dust.

ADVICE: Most rentals in Nosara are owned by American expatriates. Be sure and check the rental calendar. People vote with their feet and will come back time and again if they like the house. An empty calendar is usually empty for a reason. Second, read the "Guest comments" section. Home owners listing their property on VRBO are not able to edit or delete these comments, in fact many home owners disable this feature.

The house sits on the 200 meter mark. Casa de Memphis is right at the short trail head to the beach. It is a 30 second walk to the beach with monkeys and all kinds of wildlife residing in the exclusion zone. All of this means that the beach is in a natural setting. Don't Walk to the Beach, Casa De Memphis is on the Beach.

Year Purchased: 2007

Why the Owner Chose Nosara

We were looking to move down to Costa Rica and began the process of looking for a new home. We literally got out a map and started going down the Pacific coast doing a Google search on each and every town on the map. When we saw large scale concrete high rise buildings, the search moved on. Unfortunately, what we were looking for in Costa Rica, was long gone until we happened upon Nosara.

Nosara is best described as a perfect mix of human existence in a natural setting. The monkeys do not run from you but stare back. The beach is natural and there are no buildings to be seen and best of all because there are no large scale condominium projects. You basically have the place to yourself and that is why we bought the house where we did.

And the name, Casa de Memphis? It came about as a product of need. As in most of South America, there are no addresses, instead every house has a name. We wanted a name that best described the house and location but they were already taken. Next we wanted a name that gringos could remember. Also take into consideration the fact that people in Nosara do not use there last name and we were quickly referred to as David and Mary from Memphis and in the absence of anything else, Casa de Memphis it became.

The Unique Benefits at this House

Location, Location, Location and the house is the best example of just that. On the beach, by the river, next to the wildlife preserve. Families with children are especially attracted to the house because they are just steps away from the pool, beach, jungle and all of the animals Costa Rica has to offer. The animals are actually best seen from the front porch while sitting in one of the four rocking chairs. Highly addictive, no cure!

A
The House

B
Olga's Bar

Cheap eats and popular with the local gringos at sunset. This is also the place where the local fisherman haul their boats in and out of the water at sunset

Trail Head

This is the trail head for one of the many trails that run through the jungle.

One of the best restaurants in Nosara and the walk down the beach to it is in itself a reason to stay at Casa de Memphis.

You guessed it Swiss Restaurant.

K

This is where the ocean water shoots up out of the rocks. Kids love it.

David & Mary Caywood have owned Casa de Memphis sense the year it was built back in 2007. Mary is a professor at the University of Memphis while David flies for FedEx. The management company that looks after the house is owned by Tiffany and Frank and they have a staff of about 20 employees. With Frank being German and David an airline pilot they have come together with the following management program. “Correct it before it breaks. Repair it when it does. Remove it when you can’t.” This attitude alone is one of the reasons why everyone goes away planning their return and the guest comments reflect just that. The one down side to David & Mary’s beach house, it is often booked up well in advance but if you are flexible, they can usually get you in.

    • Costa Rica and the Casa de Memphis were awesome. The house is only meters away from the ocean and only minutes away from Playa Pelada (drenched in the Costa Rican Tico culture) and a 10 minute beach walk to Playa Guiones. On the beach wlk, we encountered surfers, Ticos, and many other local treasures. We ate breakfast at several places, but especially enjoyed Robin’s – her homemade ice cream became an everyday favorite for my husband and our 2 daughters. Our family (me, my husband, and our 2 teenage daughters) stayed for 15 days and we would return in a heartbeat. Almost everyone in Costa Rica speaks Spanish, so hone up on your Espanol. I had fun using my limited Espanol abilities—but next time we go back, I’ll be even more proficient. My husband and I started our mornings watching the monos congos (howler monkeys) feast on fruit off a near-by tree while we sipped strong Costa Rican coffee on the porch of our beach house. The parakeets were as thick as thieves and they make a crazy sort of racket. We took long walks on the beaches and along the dirt roads of the jungle forests. We saw iguanas and a couple of coatis)—very cool! The cows (vacas) of Costa Rica are interesting creatures—they mostly hale form India and make for interesting viewing and conversation. We went on a 13-cable zip line experience above and through the canopies of the Costa Rican Rain Forest. About two-thirds into the 4-hour trek, the rain poured in the jungle like we’ve never seen. It was astounding. If you want to experience the best (and safest) zip line in Costa Rica, be sure to visit Miss Sky. Some of our adventures were NOT for the faint of heart. We went caving (spelunking) in a series of incredible caves in el Parque National Barro Hondo. The ladder down to the caves was attached to a rock wall and descended about 60 feet. We were harnessed in, but it was still a bit daunting. If you go spelunking in the Parque National Barro Hondo, be sure to ask for Norman and Seldarno—they were outstanding guides and local informants. The girls went on a horse ride with Hans from the Boca Nosara Tours— they loved riding on the Costa Rican coast. They galloped their horses along the shoreline—and had a memorable time. We highly recommend Hans and his wife, Beate. We often dined at Ponchos (our favorite place to eat) and enjoyed margaritas at La Luna Beach Bar. We also watched the Nosaran men play soccer in downtown Nosara on Sunday morning--which is a huge sport in Central America. Greg and the ladies tried their hand at surfing, though they never did master the boards. Hurray for boogey boards--which we were quite content to enjoy on the incredible ocean waves. The lifestyle in Costa Rica is definitely one to which we could rapidly adjust--we had the time of our lives. We met Dave and Mary while we were there—an unexpected treat. If you decide to travel to Costa Rica—be sure to stay at the Casa de Memphis—it’s an unforgettable experience!

    • Thanks a million to Memphis Dave for his wonderful casa in Nosara! Our many thanks to Tiffany and Frank (property managers) too, who were incredibly helpful, friendly - far beyond expectation! From the moment we stepped into Casa Memphis, we felt at home - and the magic of Costa Rica. Just a short 3-5 minute walk to the ocean water with the BEST sunsets we've ever seen - and great sunrise walks! Every imenity was available in the home. The outdoor shower sure came in handy when returning from the beach! The pool is very large and well kept - we spent many afternoons lounging and doing laps. Air conditioning & ceiling fans in every room keep it cool on those hot days/nights. The grocery stores had everything else we could possibly need. The restaurants were amazing, most only a short walk away (but be sure to bring a flashlight at night!). The "locals" of Nosara are always friendly and willing to talk or help with directions, but make note of landmarks because that is how you will get verbal directions (adds to the charm!). The black photo album/binder Dave leaves on the table is filled with many useful tips and things to do. We can't wait to return to Nosara! Thanks again! Such great accomodations (thanks Casa Memphis) made such a great vacation!

    • In February 2009 my family and I set out to see how many days in a row we could go to the beach to play or surf in the morning and then lounge by the pool in the afternoon before we got bored. The answer: A LOT. We had a fantastic vacation in Nosara and much of it's success was due to Dave and the Casa de Memphis. The house was complete with everything we needed. And Nosara, too, has everything you'll need from groceries to gasoline to internet cafe and restaurants. Don't hesitate to visit this wonderful place and stay in this wonderful house. Chances are you will love it.

    • We were at Casa de Memphis the second week of January 2009. From the moment we got to the house everything was just wonderful. The property, the people in Nosara, the horseback riding, our day exploring the town and beautiful scenery on 4 wheelers, and all the wonderful hours we spent on the beach, which was right there just a minutes walk from the house. The pool was not as close to the house as it looked in the pictures but it was beautiful and after a long day on 4 wheelers it was fabulous to undwind with a few laps and a soak. Everything was just as David explained it would be. All the amenities you expect and then some. We didn't want for anything. We love to travel and always try to go somewhere we have never been before but our stay at Casa de Memphis was so great that we have been considering making another trip to Nosara. The only thing we could find to complain about were the roads. I just love pavement. But that was all part of the package that made it a wonderful destination to experience.

      Homeowner Response:
After much delay, the government is to begin paving the road into Nosara in January 2010. They have already surveyed the route and it will be somewhat different from the route we currently use. Instead of exiting to the right just after the gas station you will down drive on past the gas station and take a right closer to Samara. This will definitely change thing both good and bad. • We just returned from our second vacation at Casa de Memphis & it was even better than our first! Only because we were more familiar with the roads, knew where places were & what things there were to do. We even met up with some of the locals we had made friends with on our first vacation to Nosara over a year ago & they still remembered us! We can't say enough about the accommodations at Casa de Memphis. Everyting you need is right at hand. The new lighted privacy fence that was put up this year is very nice & attractive too. Two of the couples that came on this trip with us stayed at the condos right behind Casa de Memphis. We all enjoyed the pool & we would congregate there for afternoon cocktails & salsa. Daniel oversees the condos and he is so nice! He would bring cold drinks to us ladies while we were lounging in the pool & pay us huge compliments that really made us laugh! The men went deep sea fishing and had no luck but we discovered there is a fresh fish market in Garza. There we were able to purchase freshly caught fish, huge fresh shrimp & crabs for the nights we did not want to go out to eat. I can't say enough about the people in Costa Rica. They are the most friendly & kind people I have ever met. I can't wait until our next trip back.

    • This is my 5th time to Costa Rica and I have to say that Nosara is everything Dave Caywood told me it would be and more and Dave’s house actually does sit at the corner of peace and quiet. We arrived and were met by the house’s manager Tiffany and the rest of the week just unfolded into one of the best vacations we have ever had. The house has everything, far better appointed than what we have ever rented in the past, and is in perfect working order. We had heard that the only restaurant in Nosara on the beach, La Luna had not been up to par but when we were there it was fabulous. It looks as if their problems are behind them and the walk at sunset from the house to La Luna one of our favorites. I would highly recommend Casa de Memphis over and above any of the other houses we have rented and the Tiffany the manager says it stays booked up. Now we know why. We are coming back.

    • I highly recommend this as the perfect central location to build your Costa Rica vacation around. The short walk to such a gorgeous ( and often private) beach was made even better by all the sounds and sights along the path. Everything thing needed in a rental home was provided and more. I have rented vacation homes for many years and this was easily one of the nicest and best equipped. It was great to have the pool when the beach was just a little too hot and only once while we were there were there any other folks at the pool besides our group. One of the greatest treats was discovering something new around every curve on those crazy roads. You must go to the beach at night( take a flashlight for the path) just as the stars are coming out, turn off your flashlight and just sit quietly and watch an amazing view of the very stars we never see when we are in well light civilization. After our week there we headed up to Arenal Volcano area. It was so beautiful and cool there but we sure missed waking up and being on the beach in one minute. jrj

    • We had the pleasure of staying at Casa de Memphis mid July 2008 and had a wonderful experience. I'll preface my remarks by saying that I am one of Mary Caywood's brothers: TREMENDOUS time! The house is well built and secure, everyone with whom we interacted, locals and transplanted Americans/others, were friendly and helpful, the beach was easily accessible and quite beautiful, the water was warm and the waves were large. Lots of stuff to do in and around Nosara including the "zip line" which is well worth the money (hanging upside down is cool to do), surfing (all three of my children learned the basics after an hours lesson), exploring nature and watching monkeys go from tree to tree (when walking to the beach, listen for the "blop-blop" sound often accompanied by a fine, yellow mist; those are the telltail signs of monkeys having fun with you). Dining out is a must but, if you prefer to stay at the house to eat, you can hire a cook, arranged by Tiffany, to buy groceries and cook for you. The house next door is of similar design and was available for another family with whom we have traveled. The roads are bumpy but you get used to them. Just plan your outings by car well. It is currently the "rainy season" but we had plenty of sun. For us, the rain typically came in the afternoon so we planned our days accordingly. There were some days without rain and oftentimes the rain, when it comes, is transient, lasting 30 minutes or more, then it is gone. American dollars and VISA accepted most places but bring cash for the zipline, AKA Canopy Ride. Don't expect paved roads, malls or huge supermarkets; you have enough of those in the States. Consider this an adventure and know that there or no expectations from you from the locals except respect of them as you would expect for yourselves. Thanks, Dave and Mary! Steve, Wendy, children, Beth and family next door!

      Homeowner Response:
In Laws: Like a bad habit, they eventually return!

    • My family group of 6 adults and four small children (ages 9 months to four years) stayed in Casa de Memphis and the neighboring house for a week in late March/early April. Casa de Memphis is a great vacation house. It was very hot in Costa Rica at that time, and the air conditioning and ceiling fans all work well, which was good for us as we were not used to that level of heat. The house is very comfortable, and has a working grill, television, and washer dryer. The pool in the adjacent small condo complex was gorgeous, and had shaded areas that were nice for the kids. The bedrooms and bathrooms are clean and comfortable. You can easily walk to the beach, to a few different restaurants, and through a forest path to the river. There are lots of good restaurants in the area that you can drive to, and there are parts of the beaches that are great for kids, as well as the good surfing spots. My husband also took a fishing charter out and came home with mahi mahi, which was great on the grill. We saw lots of monkeys, lizards and iguanas in the area. It was a beautiful, relaxing, comfortable spot, and everyone we met in Nosara (and all over Costa Rica) was very friendly. We would definitely recommend Casa de Memphis as a great place to stay in Nosara.
