Accommodations: House, 2 Bedrooms + Bunk Area, 2.5+ Baths (Sleeps 6)
Keywords: Beach house, Nosara, Surfing, House
Hang Ten, Chill Out, Go Native, “Is that a real monkey?”
Casa de Memphis is located in the northern corner of Playa Pelada where the Ostional Wildlife Reserve meets the Pacific Ocean and your front door. While Casa de Memphis is very secluded, it is still convenient to shopping and the other amenities. If you do not mind a troop of monkeys living in the trees above and an array of birds not commonly found in a front yard, this is the place for you. (Some would refer to the location as “Critter Central”.) Beach, wildlife, peace and quiet, and no other people. (Just look over the photos and see for yourself.)
The whole beach is yours as you walk down the beach to one of the finest restaurants in the state of Guanacaste, La Luna. As you walk to La Luna, check out the tidal pools and the marine aquarium left by the tide. Every hour the beach area offers up a new setting as the tide comes in and out. Playa Pelada is the best place to swim of the three beaches in Nosara and kids can't get enough of the tidal pools.
This newly constructed, fully air conditioned beach house has two master bedrooms, each with its own massive bathroom, queen size bed, vaulted ceiling and private walkout balcony. The bigger of the two bedrooms has a bunk bed off to the side carved into its own area. The house is fully furnished and equipped for a party of 6. The houses sits behind a secure gated entrance at the end of the road with secure off street parking. No through traffic as you sit on the front porch and try and figure out what kind of humming bird that is. As of January 2009, the house has high speed, wireless internet.
For those who want to cool off by the pool simply walk out the back door, through the gate and enjoy the huge luxury pool equipped with a sauna, pavilion and swim-up bar. The pool is part of a very small complex made up of condos and because they are 2nd homes, no one is ever there. You have the whole place to yourself, just like the beach.
Casa de Memphis is set up for the weekly renter. Very child friendly with a crib and high chair. (Because of the way the house is constructed it is hard for children to do any real damage, although some have tried.) High Speed Wireless Internet, linens, a full size safe for your valuables(large and small, i.e. laptop computers), weekly house cleaning, monkeys, and they are all included at no extra charge. The house is managed by a couple that live just up the hill and are always on hand to answer a question or take care of something. There is even a comprehensive scrap book with loads of information about the house and the area. Everything you need is already there. AS OF NOVEMBER 2008, BEACH CHAIRS AND BEACH TOWELS ARE PROVIDED AT NO ADDITIONAL COST.
Tired of cooking? We can arrange for a private chef to do all of the shopping, come to the house and prepare the menu of your choice at a mere fraction of what dinning out would be. This is the best bargain in Nosara and the wife of the owner of the house takes full advantage of this. Imagine, someone comes to the house at 15:00 (3PM), cleans, prepares dinner, cleans up afterwards and departs by 20:00 (8PM). Cost: $25 plus groceries. Tell us what you want and we will make it happen.
NOTE: Nosara, like many other beach communities, is experiencing a building boom. The northern end of Playa Pelada, where the house is located, is the only location free from the early morning construction noise, truck traffic and the associated dust.
ADVICE: Most rentals in Nosara are owned by American expatriates. Be sure and check the rental calendar. People vote with their feet and will come back time and again if they like the house. An empty calendar is usually empty for a reason. Second, read the "Guest comments" section. Home owners listing their property on VRBO are not able to edit or delete these comments, in fact many home owners disable this feature.

Map & Owner's Profile
Don't Walk to the Beach, Casa De Memphis I is on the Beach.
Year Purchased: 2007
Why the Owner Chose Nosara
We were looking to move down to Costa Rica and began the process of looking for a new home. We literally got out a map and started going down the Pacific coast doing a Google search on each and every town on the map. When we saw large scale concrete high rise buildings, the search moved on. Unfortunately, what we were looking for in Costa Rica, was long gone until we happened upon Nosara.
Nosara is best described as a perfect mix of human existence in a natural setting. The monkeys do not run from you but stare back. The beach is natural and there are no buildings to be seen and best of all because there are no large scale condominium projects. You basically have the place to yourself and that is why we bought the house where we did.
And the name, Casa de Memphis? It came about as a product of need. As in most of South America, there are no addresses, instead every house has a name. We wanted a name that best described the house and location but they were already taken. Next we wanted a name that gringos could remember. Also take into consideration the fact that people in Nosara do not use there last name and we were quickly referred to as David and Mary from Memphis and in the absence of anything else, Casa de Memphis it became.
The Unique Benefits at this House
Location, Location, Location and the house is the best example of just that. On the beach, by the river, next to the wildlife preserve. Families with children are especially attracted to the house because they are just steps away from the pool, beach, jungle and all of the animals Costa Rica has to offer. The animals are actually best seen from the front porch while sitting in one of the four rocking chairs. Highly addictive, no cure!
Cheap eats and popular with the local gringos at sunset. This is also the place where the local fisherman haul their boats in and out of the water at sunset
The house manager's house is just up the hill and her handy man husband 2 minutes away.
The place to veiw the 18:30 sunset from their bar overlooking the Nosara River. Some would debate the best restaurant in town. We would not argue otherwise!
This is were the horses are kept and a great view of the river just before it meets the Pacific Ocean.
This is the trail head for one of the many trails that run through the jungle.
One of the best restaurants in Nosara and the walk down the beach to it is in itself a reason to stay at Casa de Memphis.
At low tide there are hundreds of pools of water left behind with loads of marine wildlife in them. Little ones can't get enough.
There is a well established path connecting the two beachs. From the house down the beach this path connect Playa Pelada with Giones. It is a 10 minutes walk to Giones from Casa de Memphis
Lee stayed at Casa de Memphis and bought the closest house for sale before he left.
Richard rents four wheelers or quads as they call them just up the road and around the corner.
The barrier reef off shore tames the surf and makes the northern end of Playa Pelada the best beach to swim. The southern section is not as protected and the surfing better. great place to watch the l
There are two airlines that fly into Nosara, Sanza and Nature Air. Daily service from San Jose takes only 45 minutes, VS. a five hour drive. National rent a car will pick you up and there are taxis

David & Mary Caywood have owned Casa
de Memphis since the year it was built back in 2007. Mary is a professor at the University of Memphis while David flies for FedEx. The management company that looks after the house is owned by Tiffany and Frank and they have a staff of about 20 employees. With Frank being German and David an airline pilot they have come together with the following management program. “Correct it before it breaks. Repair it when it does. Remove it when you can’t.” This attitude alone is one of the reasons why everyone goes away planning their return and the guest comments reflect just that. The one down side to David & Mary’s beach house, it is often booked up well in advance but if you are flexible, they can usually get you in.

What a wonderful experience, so much better than we anticipated. My wife and 15 month old son didn't know what to expect as we drove down the potholed roads to what was apparently the middle of the rainforest, when we pulled up to this beautiful house. It is incredible both inside and out, accented with the most beautiful woods you can imagine. It was roomy, clean, and had all of the amenities we could want. In the morning we would go out on our balcony and watch howler monkeys, veriegated squirrels, parrots, parakeets and cotamundis playing in the trees - right there in front of us! The beach is about 200 ft from the house, and on the way to it we would see many multi colored lizards including iguanas, as well as brilliantly orange-colored crabs and hermit crabs scurrying away. We had this beautiful beach all to ourselves, and found so many colorful and uniquely shaped shaped shells. The water was perfect. We found a coconut the first day, and man was it good. At night, we would sit on the front porch and relax with a cigar and beverage, and you could hear the ocean at the perfect volume, better than any Corona commercial. Even though it seems you are miles away from anywhere, the are little pockets carved away in the jungle that have some of the most marvelous resteraunts and bars I have ever seen. They have completely stocked kitchens and bars, and everything is SOOO fresh. Some were upscale with infitiy pool bars, and while at others I kept waitng for Jimmy Buffet to walk up and have a Margarita. At one place, a couple of kinkajou (raccoon family) walked right out of the jungle up to our table, which my son loved. They were all very reasonbly priced. And if total laid back relaxation and fabulous dining isn't enough, we took surfing lessons (the area is famous for its surfing), and went on an incredibley exhilarating zip line canopy tour. So many other psoitives, like the amazingly few biting insects, the sights and sounds, the people, the weather, and the lack of crowds gives this place the perfect mix of relaxation and excitement. Another crummy week in paradise . . . Nick June 2007

We went for a week to Nosara to attend a friend's wedding there. We found Casa Memphis I online, and I began an email correspondence with the owner. He was extremely helpful in answering all my questions and providing additional information that hadn't even occurred to me. When we actually arrived, we were thrilled to discover the house was just as it appeared in the online photos, and was very clean and well-maintained. We enjoyed the wi-fi, the outdoor grill, the pool and occasionally, the A/C. I loved sitting on the second floor balcony outside the bedroom first thing in the morning to listen and watch the birds and monkeys. The beach is just a minute or two away. Also, we enjoyed the horseback riding tour as well as the canopy tour by zipline, which was an awesome experience. The local property manager was very friendly and helpful, and the whole experience was totally enjoyable and pleasant. I would not hesitate to recommend Casa Memphis to friends and family, and hope to go back again myself. What a wonderful little piece of paradise! Thanks for a very happy experience!

Dave and Mary's Case de Memphis UNO is great. Tiffany and Frank (nearby mgrs) will take care of any issues during your stay. Turn left out of gate &less than 100 Steps to quiet beach. Both large bedrooms upstairs w/ large walk-in showers. Plenty of space in living room, kitchen, dining room for a large family. Just a Wonderful House. Look at Memphis II right around corner if have larger group. As Dave & others have discussed, PLEASE rent a car in Nosara as the roads are certainly an adventure during daylight(night time even mo' FUN) & some of the hills make biking back to the casa a bit impossible unless you are interested in hiking with the bike uphill. The folks at National/Alamo near Marlin Bill's and Rosie's Soda are GREAT. Make sure to just get all the insurance you can get. It's easier than hassling with your credit card company back in States should something occur. the maximum coverage is NOT that much more than the minimum req'd monopolized liability insurance for CR. Plenty of surfing, yoga, adventures, great meals right in/nearby the Nosara Beaches/Playas. We really enjoyed the Miss Sky zip lines - GO. Had a blast and I am a wimp who can't handle roller coasters. The folks take care of you the entire time on the zip lines, it's fail safe with heavy duty carbiners plus backups, heavy cable reels, DOUBLE cable lines, thick gloves - think brakes, upper and lower body harnesses, helmets and unbelievable views of the canopy, hummingbirds, more birds, river, waterfalls &Monkeys. Wear a swimsuit under your gear to enjoy the pond and waterfall. CHOW - don't miss Gilded Iguana ( wide Menu, they take Credit cards - no added fees and prices include both the 13% tax & 10% tip) - we just left another 10% tip each night since the service was excellent. Live Music Tuesday and FRI or SAT. LaGarta Lodge - great view for sunset and a libation. Giardino Tropicale under new mgmt. Staff great, food excellent. La Luna ( had just opened for season - beautiful, good CR microbeer) and Olga's ( very good, very Tico menu) an easy walk south on Playa Pelada from Casa Memphis. Super Nosara Market well run, just keep on road to left when see airport runway. New Gas station on way in to Nosara Village will take good care of you. Robin's Ice Cream/Helado is all homemade - try it. Advice: prices in Nosara and Costa Rica in general are not cheap but not overly pricey either. Many dining options, groceries, excursions comprable to States. Pura Vida.

My wife, our 18 year old son and 15 year old daughter stayed at Casa de Memphis for a week at the end of March and it was the best vacation we ever had. If we could have figured out a way to stay there we never would have left. Dave, the homeowner, and Tiffany, his local contact, made sure that everything worked out fine logistically. The house is as advertised and while there is one house right next door it was not a problem. The owners of that house were present during our stay and we wish we could have got to know them better. The pool in the villa complex was fantastic and we had it to ourselves most of the time. The beach is absolutely awesome and most of the time we had it to ourselvers. There is an undertow so don't go too far out if you are unfamiliar with dealing with that, but you can safely bodysurf or use the boogy boards to ride the 3-6 foot waves in. When the tide goes out you can go to the exposed rocks and find little fish and crabs. The front porch was a great place to have coffee and listen to the howler monkeys that were in the trees about 50 steps away. The monkeys were not inhibited by our presence at all. I could not believe there were actually monkeys in the trees! Hibiscus bushes and bouganvilleas are like weeds there. It was absolutely beautiful and we were there towards the end of the dry season! Tons of birds with some big hummingbirds. We did the zipline tour (terrifying at first if you are afraid of heights like I am) and the guides were very professional and entertaining at the same time. We went deep see fishing and my son caught a 7 foot sailfish! You would think that this would be a huge highlight but it was just one of a never ending series of all time great vacation experiences. The kids took a surfing lesson and were catching their own waves in an hour's time. We went horseback riding as well. The local people were really friendly and the restaurants were out of this world good. The Pacific Azule is a must on Sunday night. We would go back tomorrow if we could. One week is definately not enough time in this place. You almost instantly fall into a natural rhythm with sunrise and sunset and you can't help but unwind here. Thanks Dave for the best vacation we have ever had!

Casa de Memphis - Great Get-a-way Vacation

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. When looking for a location for our vacation we wanted something different from the typical touristy vacation with large hotels, amusement parks, and crowded beaches. When we talked to David he sold us on Nosara and Casa de Memphis. Had to go with the fellow Tennessean. There were six of us traveling together, my wife, 2 children (18 & 21), and 2 of their friends (18 & 21). The whole group tried the Zip-line with Miss Sky Canopy, which was a great adventure! The kids took a surfing lesson from Kimbo at Nosara Surf Academy. They were very professional and accommodating. Kimbo worked with the two boys and the two girls had a female instructor which worked out great. They did pretty good for some Tennessee kids. The next day we took an ATV tour with Nosara Surf Academy. Mark & Mike were great tour guides. The tour went up into the mountain to a family coffee plantation (farm). We also had lunch with Howie who I think is one of the few if not the only Gringo living in that area. Thanks so much for inviting us in to his home. The views from the mountains are breathtaking. We were glad we took this tour vs. the others in town as they seemed to stay to the main road. As far as food we cooked a few meals at the house but also ate at the following: Poncho's, La Luna (great pizza), & Rosie's Soda Cafe (great food @ great price), The house was great. Plenty of room for the six of us. Beach was minutes away and very few people on the beach. We had the pool to ourselves when we used it as we didn't see anyone else around. I would definitely recommend renting a car, for sure rent a 4WD. It came in very handy and the drive from Liberia was no problem. There are some very interesting roads in the area if you get adventurous. Overall a great experience and would highly recommend the house and location. Tiffany was great and helped answer any questions that we had.

Just ret'd last night from our 10 day stay at Casa De Memphis I. House is as advertised, as close to the beach as is allowed in Nosara. You walk down a very short path and the whole Playa Pelada opens up in front of you. The house looks exactly as pictured - open concept first floor and two spacious bedrooms w/separate baths upstairs. All is clean and well-maintained. The porch/deck on the front of the house is a wonderful place to sit and have coffee. There's a great hammock to hang from the ceiling out there which is a perfect place to take a break from the sun. Sunsets on the beach are a must - house is equipped w/a blender - you provide the rest and go enjoy...The property is quite close to the house next door but there is a lot of foliage/landscaping that maintains privacy. It's not an issue. The pool is easily accessed out the back gate. As mentioned, it’s situated on the property of a small condo development but as owner states, it's rarely crowded. This house and the one next door have rights to use it. At most, there might've been 8 other guests there at any time we were there. Pool is a nice option in late afternoon when the sun gets to be too much. The beach in front of the house and the larger Playa Guiones beach are NEVER crowded - water is clear and warm and waves are great to play in (at both beaches). You can walk from Playa Pelada over to Playa Guiones - there's a small path at the left end of the beach that will take you there. There are two restaurants/bars on Playa Pelada that are fun to walk down to as well. If you've not been to Nosara before - it's quite a place - transports you to a calmer way of life - one "real" grocery store, two banks (one with an ATM), one gas station...people are very friendly, both locals and other tourists or expats and your stress melts away. Food was good everywhere we dined. We have minimal (ok no!)…spanish but communication wasn’t a problem. We really enjoyed everything about our stay and would love to go back again next year.

My friends and I had a wonderful time in Nosara! We ate amazing food, saw beautiful sunsets, went zip-lining, enjoyed a yoga class in a open air tree house yoga studio, got a massage, and so much more. Best of all, we left feeling 100% relaxed and as though we experienced authentic Costa Rica. Casa De Memphis has everything you could want -- a pool, a hot tub, movies and a flat screen, board games, etc. I plan to someday return to Nosara and when I do, I hope Casa De Memphis is available!

Casa de Memphis is a paradise retreat. It is close to all the beaches and located in a small village/city that offers both amazing natural environments and all the necessary amenities. The house is kept very well and the owners are very nice and friendly. There is also a pool available which can be a lot of fun, and the bathrooms are royal. Great place to escape the world and retreat to your own Costa Rican paradise.

Shopping over the internet for a vacation rental always leaves me with a case of the jitters. So, arriving at the Casa de Memphis, I was hugely relieved and happy to find it just as the photos showed on the VRBO site. Even better, actually. All the cupboards and drawers were well-stocked, the beds were super-comfy, all applicances worked, it really was just a breath away from the most awesome beach, and the pool is huge and just next door. Our two week stay was a real pleasure. Doing business with Dave Caywood was an immense pleasure. Thanks very much Dave. Pura Vida!

My husband, Dave, and I vacationed in Costa Rica for 2 weeks in January of 2010. Our second week was spent at the Casa de Memphis in Nosara. While we enjoyed both weeks, our stay at the Casa de Memphis was definitely the better of the 2 weeks.Casa de Memphis is located near many of the activities that Dave and I had circled on our "to do" list. We chose Boca Nosara Tours for our horseback riding excursion, Miss Sky Canope Tours for a zip line experience, and Half Moon Bay Sport Fishing Charters for a deep sea fishing adventure. We were not disappointed in any of these recommended activities. The road to Casa de Memphis keeps the area around Playa Pelada from becoming overly populated with those not residing or vacationing in the immediate area. To say it is a little bumpy would be an understatement. It takes a little getting used to and it helps to watch the locals maneuver around and across the impediments (for lack of a better word).Casa de Memphis is situated within a very short walk to Playa Pelada. Early morning brings the chatter of howler monkeys, parrots and a variety of other wildlife. Dave would prepare a hearty breakfast in the well stocked kitchen while I wandered to through the trees to the beach - camera in hand. We scheduled each of our activities for the morning hours with our afternoons open for lounging by the beach or the pool next door. After a brief respite we would wonder out for dinner. We enjoyed a meal and bonfire at Playa Garza (Pacifica Azul) and dinners at Lagarta Lodge (reservation required), Olga’s and Marlin Bill’s. The view from Lagarta Lodge was everything I expected and the food was enjoyable. The best dinner I had all week was the whole fried fish from Olga’s (I believe the worst meal I had might have also been from Olga’s).Aside from the kitchen, Casa de Memphis held other attractions. There was enough of a selection on television to keep us occupied when we retired for the evening. The full kitchen is stocked with all the essentials and more from a utensils and appliances perspective. The 2 bedrooms are roomy – each having its own bath with tiled floors. Each bedroom has an exit to a deck where you can hear and see some of some indigenous flora and fauna. All-in-all Casa de Memphis was our home away from home. Situated in an area where rest and relaxation or adventurous activities could be incorporated into every day.We would like to thank Dave Caywood for his hospitality and hope
