Makaira has two accommodations only, each situated on their own acre, offering the most in privacy. Our premier location offers tropical beauty, exclusivity and 180 degrees of ocean views. We are the closest location to the best beaches on the island as we are on a point perched above and between two of the largest white sandy beaches on Taveuni with a third one within walking distance, all offering the most privacy.
Some of the best snorkeling is within a 100 feet or a 2 minute swim from entering the calm lagoon. Makaira specializes in affordable comfort where you can do as little or as much as you like with a full time staff to assure your comfort.
Makaira offers two cottages that are self contained with a kitchenette. Although we will offer meal plans upon request. Our latest addition, the Grander Suite is complete with master bedroom, king size bed, and a separate living room, that can be converted to a second bedroom and a large deck to capture the views. Every room overlooks an unobstructed, panoramic ocean view with an infinity ocean view and star light view from the bath tub and a separate jungle shower.
The Marlin Bure is our original cottage that Makaira's reputation was founded upon. A cozy and romantic cottage with a spacious master bedroom with Queen size bed, huge shower/bath offering privacy and 260 degree view from the bathing area, separate jungle shower, spacious deck for lounging and a panoramic ocean view.
Makaira is ideally suited for the traveler who wants to get away and does not want the crowds, but wants to have the security and comforts while basking in the mystique of the South Pacific.

Year Purchased: 1992
We are originally from Hawaii. We both have a long standing love affair with the sea and are connected to the casual tropical life style. John likes to be on the top of the water fishing and I (Roberta) like to be in it surrounded by all the incredible beauty and colors. We both tend to like to enjoy life, and not get to bogged down by things that don't really matter, but instead focus on what really does. Which is enjoying life.
Why the Owner Chose Matei
It is drop dead gorgeous, with amazing views, the sea is just 177 steps away to either the boat or incredible snorkeling. It reminds us of Hawaii that was lost during our childhood. I suppose we didn't get our fill of paradise so we choose to find somewhere that still retains all the mystique of the South Pacific. It is a large property so we hope we will always be able to maintain an oasis of paradise no matter what happens around us in the future.
The Unique Benefits of this Cottages
Like John says, if a person can't be happy here, they can't be happy anywhere. We are literary surrounded by beauty from the land and sea, right down to gorgeous sunsets, and wonderful people. I like to call it practice heaven, that is really the only phrase that suits this property. We are so fortunate to be able to live that kind of dream. Guests always laugh when we are transfixed in some beautiful moment and I say, It's a hard job but someone has got to do it. For some strange reason, I don't get much sympathy from them?
