We are suited for the traveler that just wants to get away, without the crowds, be it for fun, adventure, romance or quiet reflection. Makaira has 3 self contained accommodation, situated at the least on their own half acre or acre. We offer the best of both worlds of a vacation cottage and a resort. We cater to the traveler who wants to have a more private get away and design their own holiday without being regimented with time schedules, or be part of the faceless masses, nor do they want to be set adrift in a foreign country. We offer our guest every conceivable choice to design their holiday on their own time and desire frame. Set in tropical beauty with panoramic ocean views perched over and between some of the best beaches and snorkeling on Taveuni, combined with a full time Fijian staff to cater to your needs, meals upon request, personal laundry service, guides, daily maid service, in-house fishing operation, massage. Free snorkel tours, WiFi, private phone, Kayak and lots of toys.
Location: We are privately located on the tip Ucuilagi Point that translated into English from the original Fijian name means Heavenly Point or point to Heaven. The original Fijians aptly named this location, as it is the only location in Matei that has stunning panoramic views that are right, left and center overlooking the Somosomo straits and islands on the horizon. The property is 4 acres with manicured gardens, filled with tropical fruits, flowers, and native birds. There are two white sandy coves to either side of us. The beaches to the left are the most beautiful and are the largest and most private white sandy beaches in Matei, with the best snorkeling on the island just moments from entering the water. Our kayak offers the opportunity to explore the 3 miles of reef and snorkeling to the left of us and discover a few more nearby deserted white sandy beaches that are only accessible by sea.
Fishing: The Huntress-28 foot Fiberglass Center Console with new 225hp Yamaha, meets USCG safety standards. The boat is soft riding and provides a great casting platform for light tackle deep sea trolling or reef casting/popping/jiggig and fly-fishing and is equally capable of pursuing Big Game Fish. Your Capt. John Llanes has 30 years of international professional charter experience. The boat is equipped with GPS, VHF, 4 rod holders, 30, 50, and 80 Internationals, 2 stand up belts.. Pristine and abundant waters surround your home base of Taveuni, Fiji. All the various prime fishing habitats are here and begin five minutes after launching, opening up to a vastness of virtually virgin fishing grounds in every direction. For Giant Trevally (GT) and Fly bring your own gear. We strongly support release of all billfish and GT's. We also offer two state of the art fishing kayaks for hire, inquire for more information.
About Makaira: We specialize in privacy as we are aware of your needs for peace, quiet and privacy, but we have a full staff that are all happily available to you. Makaira is ideally suited for the traveler that just wants to get away, be it for romance or quiet reflection. For that special traveler, who does not want the crowds, Makaira’s breath taking location is set to create some incredible memories that will last a lifetime. The accommodations sit on their own unobstructed acre that provide all the natural tropical drama of overlooking the ocean and two easily accessible white sandy coves, a canopy of stars at night, lush tropical gardens, and brilliant sunsets, a complete setting, which is sure to quiet the stress and inner yearnings for serenity. We have tried to create the comforts you are accustomed to and include just about everything many of the higher priced accommodations offer, except we offer privacy on one of the most beautiful locations on the island at an affordable price.

We were lucky enough to stay at the beautiful Makaira Resort on Taveuni, the garden isle (and our favorite isle) in Fiji. The owners, Roberta and John, were wonderfully gracious, generous, and knowledgeable of the island. They also told the most fantastic stories! John, being a skilled and seasoned fisherman and world-class chef, provided us nightly with the most delicious gourmet meals--the best meals we had in Fiji during our 5 week trip. Dinner was served in a dining bure overlooking the ocean, on the edge of a cliff with an amazing 180 degree view of the ocean. Their meals consisted of fresh fish caught by John and vegetables from Roberta's organic vegetable garden. This eco resort is beautifully landscaped with coconut trees, tropical plants and fragrant flowers. The landscape and position of bures offers lots of privacy, and the 180 degree ocean view offers beautiful opportunities to see both the sunrise and sunset. The bures are tastefully decorated with Polynesia art and handicrafts, have nice hot showers, and a porch with fantastic, unobstructed open views of the landscape and sea. Each bure also has its own cooking facilities--not that you would want to cook for yourself with such delicious meals available (breakfast and dinner). Makaira is a great location as it offers world class snorkeling right out front. Roberta is an incredibly kind, warm, friendly, knowledgeable host who took us snorkeling and "coral gardening". The resort also has a bus stop and airport nearby, and is in walking distance to stores and a farmers market. This heavenly place also offers amazing coconut oil massages and papaya/fruit body treatments, as well as hammocks overlooking the sea for relaxation. Last but not least, Makaira Resort employs very friendly, local staff (who are extended family to John and Roberta), who always greet you with a great big smile.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, romantic getaway.

Where to start. We stayed at Makaira for 2 weeks at the end of jan. and the beginning of feb.2010. The owners John and Roberta are the most wonderful people we have met in our travels abroad. They are doing amazing things on Taveuni. They have an entire Fijian family helping them run the resort and the entire family is a treat to behold every morning at breakfast. Christie is a young woman being trained by John to help with the meals and she sings like an angel while she's cooking. Her husband Pete is also helping with serving and he is the nicest young man you will ever meet. Christie's sister Lucy is also helping and my wife wanted to wrap both of them up and bring them home because they are so cute.John did most of the cooking for us and 5 star resorts could never have a better chef than him. We both gained weight which definately wasn't on the itinerary. Roberta keeps the whole Makaira family functioning like clockwork. She joined us for dinner every night and has the most incredible stories of their lives imagineable. Their life story is like none i could even contrive and the best part is they have no idea how extraordinary their lives have been.John is one of the funniest people i have ever met and he is so humble he doesn't even realize it. The cottage is like taking a cottage and dropping it in the middle of paradise. We loved the view and had a hard time getting motivated to do anything because the setting is so spectacular. The island itself is amazing and it is the most lush island we have ever seen. we hiked to 3 waterfalls and took the local buses and of course traveled with HARRY the local taxi driver. John and Roberta took us to some other reefs for snorkelling and we had a wonderful time. The coral was breathtaking and the scenery was to die for.The coral right in front of the resort is the best i have ever seen. The only down side was you were a little at the whim of the tides but knowing this you planned your day around it. We have been back for a week and a half and i'm still telling stories to my coworkers of our 2 weeks in paradise.THANKS JOHN AND ROBERTA AND YOUR FIJIAN FAMILY.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, tourists without a car, adventure seekers, romantic getaway.

Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, tourists without a car, adventure seekers, romantic getaway.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 1991
About the owner: We are originally from Hawaii and came to Taveuni in 1986 and realized how much it reminded us of the Hawaii of our youth that we thought no longer existed anywhere. So we just had to have another shot at paradise that was not lost. Quite simply we missed the charm and romance of Hawaii's yesteryears. It was gone before we were grown up.
Why the Owner Chose Matei:
It is so beautiful, words can't describe how beautiful it is and photos can't capture the whole view. We wanted a property that was large enough that we could maintain its tropical integrity, have privacy and have enough space to be self sufficient with an organic garden. We are both ocean people, John is a many generation fisherman and we have a safe anchorage on the beach where he can launch his charter boat operation. I am an in the water person, and to be able to walk down and jump in the ocean and experience incredible snorkeling and do some reef gardening is more than I could ever dream of. It was also very important to us that no one could ever build on the beach near us because of what we saw happen to Hawaii's beaches. No one can build on the beach below us so it always maintains that element of privacy. For us it truly is practice heaven and we hope our guests feel the same way.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
We looked for 3 years for the perfect property for us on Taveuni. One that was large and easily accessible to the sea. When we found this property it was raw and undeveloped, in fact we didn't know what a stunning view it had until we cleared the last of it. We only knew there would be an ocean view. Little did we know we got a 180 degree ocean view, that no one else has, it is breathtaking. Since it was undeveloped this allowed us to create our own vision within the means of what you can do in the tropics and our finances. For the last 10 years we have been developing it and I always think 'okay now it is well and truly done'. But it isn't! That has become kind of a joke with the Makaira family whenever I say it. But there always seems to be one more thing we think of that our guests might enjoy, so I imagine it will always be a work in progress. But we are done building accommodations, 3 is enough to offer our guests the privacy, personalized service and range in rates to fit their budget. For our many returness they get a kick out of what changes have occurred since the last time they visited and immediately incorporate them into their routine of enjoyment. Although we are not 5 star and never strive to be, that is not the Aloha style which is much more relaxed and unpretentious. We laugh and say we are no star and our guests say we are All Star, which is very nice and generous of them. But we strive to give our guests the best bang for their buck,in beauty, romance, adventure, amenities, personalized service, privacy, nice clean, comfortable accommodations with a few delightful surprises and the ability to design the holiday of their choice, like we would like to do if we went somewhere. So in short it was the opportunity to imagine that brought us to this property
