Makaira has two accommodations only, each situated on their own acre, offering the most in privacy. We strive to give our guests the best of both worlds of being both a vacation rental with self contained cottages and an exclusive full service resort. Our premier location offers tropical beauty, exclusivity and 180 degrees of ocean views. We are the closest location to the best beaches on the island as we are on a point perched above and between two of the largest white sandy beaches on Taveuni with a third one within 10 minutes walking distance and our guests can often find themselves being the only ones on the beach.
Some of the best snorkeling is within a 100 feet or a 3 minute swim from entering the calm lagoon. Makaira specializes in affordable comfort where you can do as little or as much as you like with a full time staff to assure your comfort.
Makaira offers two cottages that are self contained with a kitchenette. Although we will offer meal plans upon request. The Grander Suite is complete with master bedroom, king size bed, and a separate living room, that can be converted to a second bedroom and a large deck to capture the views. Every room overlooks an unobstructed, panoramic ocean view with an infinity ocean view and star light view from the bath tub and a separate jungle shower.
The Marlin Bure is a cozy and romantic cottage with a spacious master bedroom with Queen size bed, huge shower/bath offering privacy and 260 degree view from the bathing area, separate jungle shower, spacious deck for lounging and a panoramic ocean view.
We offer lots of free amenities, kayak, snorkel gear, free snorkel tours, lessons in coral gardening, Wifi for those that bring their gear, private phone,DVD with hundreds of movies, dipping pool with infinity deck overlooking a massive ocean view, hammocks galore, lending library, games, 24 hour staff of 5 to look after your needs so our guests never feel abandoned.
Makaira is ideally suited for the traveler who wants to get away and does not want the crowds and instead prefer a little more privacy, but wants to have the security and comforts while basking in the mystique of the South Pacific, for romance, quiet reflection or adventure.

- Makaira offers all types of deep sea fishing, two state of the art Kayaks for Kayak fishing, massages, free snorkel tours, lessons in coral gardening. Personal laundry service, for our guests at a nominal fee since the cottages do not come with washers and dryers. An evening around the Kava bowl with the Fijian staff playing music upon request. Lots of Hammocks for lazing around, DVD player with hundreds of free movies, lending library, games,sundeck, dipping pool, massive ocean views.

Year Purchased: 1992
We are originally from Hawaii. We both have a long standing love affair with the sea and are connected to the casual tropical life style. John likes to be on the top of the water fishing and I (Roberta) like to be in it surrounded by all the incredible beauty and colors. We both tend to like to enjoy life, and not get to bogged down by things that don't really matter, but instead focus on what really does. Which is enjoying life.
Why the Owner Chose Matei
It is drop dead gorgeous, with amazing views, the sea is just 177 steps away to either the boat or incredible snorkeling. It reminds us of Hawaii that was lost during our childhood. I suppose we didn't get our fill of paradise so we choose to find somewhere that still retains all the mystique of the South Pacific. It is a large property so we hope we will always be able to maintain an oasis of paradise no matter what happens around us in the future.
The Unique Benefits of this Bungalow
Like John says, if a person can't be happy here, they can't be happy anywhere. We are literary surrounded by beauty from the land and sea, right down to gorgeous sunsets, and wonderful people. I like to call it practice heaven, that is really the only phrase that suits this property. We are so fortunate to be able to live that kind of dream. Guests always laugh when we are transfixed in some beautiful moment and I say, It's a hard job but someone has got to do it. For some strange reason, I don't get much sympathy from them?

Relaxing Getaway with Amazing Views and Excellent Cuisine

We were lucky enough to stay at the beautiful Makaira Resort on Taveuni, the garden isle (and our favorite isle) in Fiji. The owners, Roberta and John, were wonderfully gracious, generous, and knowledgeable of the island. They also told the most fantastic stories! John, being a skilled and seasoned fisherman and world-class chef, provided us nightly with the most delicious gourmet meals--the best meals we had in Fiji during our 5 week trip. Dinner was served in a dining bure overlooking the ocean, on the edge of a cliff with an amazing 180 degree view of the ocean. Their meals consisted of fresh fish caught by John and vegetables from Roberta's organic vegetable garden. This eco resort is beautifully landscaped with coconut trees, tropical plants and fragrant flowers.The landscape and position of bures offers lots of privacy, and the 180 degree ocean view offers beautiful opportunities to see both the sunrise and sunset. The bures are tastefully decorated with Polynesia art and handicrafts, have nice hot showers, and a porch with fantastic, unobstructed open views of the landscape and sea. Each bure also has its own cooking facilities--not that you would want to cook for yourself with such delicious meals available (breakfast and dinner). Makaira is a great location as it offers world class snorkeling right out front. Roberta is an incredibly kind,warm, friendly, knowledgeable host who took us snorkeling and "coral gardening". The resort also has a bus stop and airport nearby, and is in walking distance to stores and a farmers market. This heavenly place also offers amazing coconut oil massages and papaya/fruit body treatments, as well as hammocks overlooking the sea for relaxation. Last but not least, Makaira Resort employs very friendly, local staff (who are extended family to John and Roberta), who always greet you with a great big smile.
