Location: Woodstock, Vermont, USA ((In the Village))
Accommodations: House, 2 Bedrooms + Loft + Den, 2 Baths (Sleeps 5-7)
From the living room of Riverlee, you can see the top of Mount Tom or watch fly fishermen in the river below. The second floor is wide open, with a queen size bed and lots of closets at one end, a little TV room/sitting area, and two other spaces adaptable for different uses. The living area on the first floor is also wide open, with very high ceilings, beautiful fixtures, and a wonderful feeling of connection to the outdoors.
It consists of a pair of living rooms, one upper level room with a lovely and deliciously warm-in-winter gas fireplace, and a lower larger space that in summer opens out onto a large deck overlooking the river. The kitchen is spacious and well-equipped. The dining room area on the other side of the kitchen also opens out onto a nice deck, which makes a great breakfast spot in the warm months. There is a large bedroom and bathroom on the first floor, and a hot tub on the deck outside the bedroom.
Even though we are right near the heart of the village, the house is quite private, set down off the road on the river, so that the house across the street is hardly visible, and there is a lot between the house and the next door neighbor to the east. To the west are hemlock woods. The lot is quite steep, so there is only the smallest of "lawn" areas close to the west deck. This, and the steep, cast iron spiral staircase that gives access to the house's second floor, are a consideration if you should have toddlers. There is a little trail down to a tiny little sand beach on the river, which can get quite shallow in mid-summer, but which even at its driest in August, always makes for a cooling dip.
It is only a five minute walk to the center of town -- Gillingham's General Store (they have an incredibly diverse selection of wines always with some good buys), George the Village Butcher (his roast chickens are a favorite), the two bookshops, and Pane e Salute (the Italian cafe whose bread and coffee all my Manhattan guests swear is superior to anything they can get in the city). The Woodstock Inn golf course and fitness center (whose state-of-the-art facilities are available to the public at a very reasonable per visit rate) is just ten to fifteen minutes away on foot. It is also only a five minute walk to the Faulkner Trail up Mt. Tom, where there are miles of hiking trails. In winter, Suicide Six is a five minute drive, Killington twenty minutes. The x-c trails on Mount Tom and at the Golf Course are also just five minutes away.
