Took my parents to Maui and then here. They were so much more impressed with this house compared to every other place we stayed and every other place was much more expensive. Comfotable house and lovely setting. The owners are very gracious and were very nice to my dad even when he talked their ears off. Was very nice to have good travel advice too.

Gary and Susan's cottage was just the ticket for our winter get away to the Big Island. SuGar Cottage 2 is surrounded by vegetation offering a beautiful background of bird sounds while lounging on the 2 lanais. During the evening the music of tree frogs, occasional chickens, and the steady rhythm of surf in the background, made for a relaxing way to wind down the day. The acommadations were clean and the kitchen well stocked, so we were able to easily cook and prepare meals from the grocieries we stocked up on in Kona. As mentioned by everyone, the icing on the cake are the gracious host and hostess. Gary and Susan are the best! They truly want your experience to be memorable. We planned to scuba and brought our gear. Bill was able to complete four dives with Gary, and though I made the initial attempts to make the dives, it had been a long time since I was PADI certified and I suffered with a little panic. Gary would have taken all the time in the world to get me through my worries. He's patient and really wants his clients to have a great experience. Bill saw a white spotted eagle ray, white tipped shark, swam with turtles. I enjoyed some snorkeling so my time was great as well. One day we borrowed their kayak and paddled to Captain Cook Memorial and enjoyed the amazing snorkeling there. We were able to spot a beautiful zebra morray eel on that trip. Gary shared a few beach locations off the beaten track that with a little hiking got us to some beautiful spots away from the crowds. SuGar Cottage 2 is a two thumbs up in our book. We're already planning a return trip with our adult kids for next year.

Just got back home from our stay at the SuGar cottage. The accomodations are a great value for the money but the best part is the diving with Garry. We dove with him 3 days and it was great to have the tanks and weights and even a couple articles of loaner gear all taken care of. Each day we met Garry at 8 am and did either one or two dives and we were back home cleaned up ready to go explore the island by noon each day. One could not ask for a better dive vacation on a budget. Thanks Garry!

If you are a diver, this is the place to stay. Garry and Susan are wonderful, very accommodating and helpful hosts. They put an entire new standard on what it is to offer a live and dive arrangement. The location of the rental is neatly tucked away in Papa Bay (Captain Cook). It is nestled among lush vegetation, completely surrounded by nature. The unit is a large (1200 sq ft) two bedroom, one bath entire upper floor. It has a feel of a large tree house. This is mostly due to the lanai, not just any lanai, but a huge all screened in lanai. The double swing, the futon and a second dining table allow for guests to enjoy the churps, coos, whistles and songs of the very alive night life. The screening separates any concerns guests might have as to who or what is making all the wonderful night music. Let me get on to the diving... Garry is an incredibly wonderful divemaster. He is helpful, gracious and really able to accommodate any level of diver. His knowledge of the surrounding area and shore dive sites makes him the "go to guy." His natural kindness and easy going manner makes it easy to have a relaxing and pleasureable dive experience. I love shore diving and as a divemaster myself I really believe Kona side of the Big Island has some of the best shore diving in the world. I know what to look for when it comes to a knowledgeable and safe divemaster -- Garry is it. I had no problem letting him take the lead and guide me. Our dives were all relaxing, beautiful, exciting, fun and did I mention beautiful. If you want to dive, love relaxing shore dives, like being away from tourist town and want to experience the lushness of Hawai than the SuGar Shack and Cottage is the place. And, for all you snorklers and kayakers. Well, Garry does it all, and does it all with a smile. Thank you Garry and Susan.

Just got back from a week at this lovely location. Garry and Susan were wonderful hosts - we had everything we needed and more. Garry took us snorkeling and diving (put up with novice divers :)), helped us pick the right places to go, loaded us up with a kayak, and answered questions and gave us fun facts about the island. Susan made sure we were comfortable in our cottage and provided us with that extra help when we'd left the coffee maker on and were nowhere around. (Thanks Susan!) The screened porch is a wonderful place to sit and relax in the afternoons - and the coqui frogs were entertaining. Didn't see any dolphins, but saw two white-tipped sharks at Honomalino Beach. Fun! I would definitely visit here again! Mahalo Susan and Garry!

Everything was wonderful. Plenty of space for the 5 of us (husband, wife, 3 kids). Great kitchen, dishes, appliances, washer/dryer, etc. The owners are wonderful people who go above and beyond to make sure everything is great for their guests. The location is about 10 miles from stores, but that's no big deal. There's great snorkeling and dive spots just at the bottom of the hill. The house is at the end of a street and it's very quiet except for the relaxing sounds of the birds. It's a wonderful place to stay and I hope we can return.

The review from "Secluded Beach Lovers" in 2010 sums it up very accurately. The amenities more than make up for the extra driving distance. The house is very comfortable and the kitchen furnished sufficiently to allow us to prepare all our meals. We made use of the BBQ often. A very large washer and dryer on expansive screened lanai and plenty of beach towels allowed us to pack lighter. The cottage’s location and surrounding plantings insures the cottage is cool and comfortable day and night with the screened windows open. The great experiences Garry & Susan helped to facilitate as well as their never ending hospitality, and the affordable price allowed us to enjoy a very memorable family vacation. This will definitely be our first choice next trip to the Big Island, and we will stay much longer than 6 nights as there is way too much to do. We have visited this island over a dozen times these past 28 years as Kona’s my husband’s favorite place to dive - gentle surf, clear waters, lack of strong currents, beautiful sea life - but had not explored the diving this far south. Garry has excellent shore diving and snorkeling suggestions, provides tanks daily to dive with, and has dive gear available (but we bring our own). While on a shore dive with Garry, our daughter saw two 6' plus manta rays & beautiful living shells a short drive from Sugar Cottage. Garry loaded a pair of two man kayaks for us and we visited Kealakekue where we slid off the kayaks and snorkeled with dolphins. A pod of nearly 30 dolphins swam under our feet and several dolphins clownied around – slapping the water continuously with their tail, spinning and flipping up out of the water. On other recommended snorkeling outings we saw turtles and a plethora of tropical fish. A tip for those lucky enough to stay at Sugar Cottage – grab an ice chest from the lanai, leave in car with some frozen baggies of ice while you're out exploring or beaching, so you can stop at local grocery stores, farmers markets (absolutely wonderful), and delightful roadside stands and keep the food cool until you get back to the cottage. A fairly new Target and Costco are near the Kailua-Kona Airport as well as Sack n Save for provisions on your way down. ChoiceMart nearer the cottage is a bit pricier but a good place to pick up items. We love to visit the ‘Farmers Market’ in Kona near Bubba Gump's Restaruant– Wed to Sun – for souvenirs but don't park in Coconut Plantation Lot - $40 ticket if parked over 2 hours.

Our family of 4 stayed with Garry and Susan for 8 days in June 2011. Two went diving and two went snorkeling most mornings. Garry and Susan are wonderful hosts and generous people. The accommodations were large so the two teenagers had their own beds - one in a bedroom, the other on the lanai. The kayaking to Captain Cook Monument was awesome with the two kayaks from Garry and telling us about the tips to get our kayaks on/off with the wonderful people at the boat launch. We saw spinner dolphins and great snorkeling near the monument. We certainly have plans to go back.

My hushand & I spent 10 wonderful days @ Sugar Cottage. We loved the location - away from all the buzz & traffic of Kona but close enough to grocery. At night falling asleep to the croaking frogs and wakening with the roosters... a bit comical. Couldn't of asked for more gracious hosts - Garry, Susan & Gene - you all made this a fabulous vacation. Garry took us out on 10 shore dives... incredable ones at that! A few that will never be forgotten by any of us. I had never done any shore diving and Garry made me feel very safe - with that my confidence grew! Thank you for sharing your slice of heaven! Mahalo Pat & Sheila

We stayed at the Sugar Cottage with our two kids who are 9 and 10. The house was wonderfully appointed wtih everything we needed for our week in paradise. Gerry took use out for a fantastic kayak/snorkelling adventure in Malii and even lent us snorkel gear for during our entire stay. While the house is not right on a beach, there are several really fine beaches nearby, our favorites were Place of Refuge and Ho'okena Beach Park. What we loved about the Cottage was the feeling of privacy and remoteness. We all found Kona to be a crazy mess so we loved getting back to our cottage. We spent all our home time out on the lanai, where we read and napped and ate every meal. Thanks for the fantastic vacation.

We stayed in Sugar Cottage for a week in August 2010 and intend to come back with the children as soon as we can. The owners are very pleasent and helpful, and Gary took us out diving most mornings using gear he provided and was a very knowledgeable and patient guide/divemaster/outfitter. The accommodation would easily sleep 4-6 people and all of the additional items available (right down to cooler and ice packs) really do provide all the comforts of home and save you money. If you like diving, kayaking or snorkelling then this is the place to stay. While on the Big Island I recommend the manta ray night dive/snorkel. Its hard to beat.

My husband, my daughter and I stayed at Sugar Cottage II for a week in July 2010 and had an amazing time! Even though the location was further than we had expected from Captain Cook, it turned out to be a big advantage for all of our excursions to the east and south sides of the island, and having all the privacy was great. My husband is a scuba diver and Garry took him out for several dives to locations he would never have seen on his own. Garry also took all of us kayaking and snorkeling to a lovely secluded beach, providing all the equipment we needed and teaching us how to maneuver the kayak. He was extremely patient -- all of us were novices. The cottage itself was very comfortable and even included extras like a cooler we could use to pack picnic lunches. Hearing the frogs at night was wonderful, the flowers and plants in the yard were gorgeous, and we have several pictures of the geckos! Garry and Susan were wonderful and if we're ever able to return to Hawaii, we'll definitely plan to stay here again.

Had a great week with 2 snorkeling trips. Good base from which to see the whole Island. The unit is well equipped and comfortable, my cell phone worked(Tmobile) but no internet. I was on vacation so great excuse to get away from it. Price is excellent when you take into account the trips that Garry takes you on.

Our family spent a week in this property from June 29 to July 6 2010. We had selected this house for two main reasons: the access to kayak and snorkeling, and the positive comments about the owner and guide, Gary. We were not disappointed. The house is located in an area that is away from the busy beaches and towns. We were immediately immersed in the tropical atmosphere, with beautiful plants on the property and the noises of the night (coqui frogs may be somewhat noisy with windows open- so if you are a light sleeper, you may want to come prepared). The best part of our week were the three outings we did with Gary. He is very generous of his time, and knows the nice quiet spots to go kayaking and snorkeling. We loved Honomalino Beach. We did our first Hawaiian snorkeling activity there and it was amazing. We were in a small crystal clear bay, with a nice coral reef and a white sand beach all to ourselves. Snorkel near Captain Cook monument, although crowded, is a must see given the number of fishes you will see there. If you love peace and quiet, kayak, snorkel and diving, this is for you. You have to be aware that the roadfrom Kona to Papa Bay is narrow and winding (as well as pitch dark). The driving at night, coming from Kona, can be somewhat stressful when you have locals speeding by. The only other thing you should know is that this portion of the island is tropical and as such will get cloudy in the afternoon. This is perfect weather for the Kona coffee growing nearby (Greenwell farms makes a nice visit). So enjoy the sun before 3h00pm, when it may get cloudy. We spent one week here and the second week near Hilo. It made a nice vacation, with a chance to enjoy both sides of the island.

We just came back from a weeks stay at the Sugar Cottage. We found everything exactly as it was described and even better as the cottage is very large for 2 people. We especially enjoyed the screen-in lanai as we had our breakfasts and dinners there. The swing and the couch were added bonus to the lanai. The surroundings are beautiful away from all the noise of a city or a tourist area. The location was very convenient for all our trips as we did go to the Volcano and to Hilo. Garry and Susan were very helpful and we had everything we needed. We even got fresh eggs from their neighbor uncle Waine!!! Garry took us on numerous snorkelling and kayaking trips to places we would not be able to go on our own. This was an excellent experience and a wonderful vacation thanks to Garry. We definetely recommend this cottage.

We loved our stay at Sugar Cottage 2. It was huge and equipped with everything we needed. Gary was an awesome host- he spent several hours taking us to a black sand beach snorkeling ( the twenty minute "hike" there was as spectacular as the snorkeling) - which was wonderful- we were the only people there! We may even take up scuba diving!!!! If you like being away from crowds ( this was a little further from Captain Cook than we expected)and enjoy relaxing and/or snorkeling and/or diving Sugar Cottage is deal. The price is unbelievably reasonable and Gary's free services are priceless!

We stayed at Sugar Cottage from Oct 22 through Nov 1, 2009 and it far exceeded our expectations. The cottage itself was great, especially the lanai for morning coffee and gecko watching. It was a wonderfully relaxing location, falling asleep to coqui frogs and waking up to the entertaining roosters and chickens. The cottage is surrounded by all types of palms and flowering trees which makes it very private and beautiful, not a neighbor in site. Garry and Susan were wonderful hosts, making sure we had everything we needed and adding to our wardrobe as well (ask about their t-shirts!) The dives that Garry took us on were excellant and we always felt safe with him leading the way. We only wish we had more time to do more dives! We highly recommend staying here not only for the great, private location of Sugar Cottage but also for such welcoming and friendly hosts. Many, many mahalos Garry and Susan!! We will definitely be seeing you again for our next Big Island adventure!!

We just returned from Big Island Hawaii:-) It was amazing!!!! We stayd with Gary and Susan in the Sugar cottage II. It was like a paradise:-) The cottage is huge (very comfortale for 6 people) but we used only the lanai:-)where all these geikos, frogs and birds were singing for good night sleep, which is btw very deep and mind blowing:-) The cottage is located far away from all the chaos of tourism which we experienced in Kona and Hilo. Our stay was very relaxing and strenghtening for our 5 years old relationship. Hawaii is beautiful and very laid back as is Gary and Susan:-) In the same time it's very comfortable and exciting to dive with Gary since he is an expert in finding so many critters:-)and staying VERY cautious and safe!We traveled a big part of the island, especially 4-wheel a lot of hidden beaches but in 10 days we didn't see everything so we are plannig to come back as soon as we save enough money!:-) Please let me know if anyone would have any questions about anything I would love to help! Thank you once again Gary and Susan!!! I hope we'll see you soon!:-)

Our first trip to Hawaii and we hit a winner. The Sugar II cottage was very comfortable, clean, and well located. Gary and Susan were wonderful hosts and available for any need. Gary provides a unique opportunity to explore the waters off Kona. Our family had a mix of ocean and underwater experience - from extensive to a first time diver with no ocean time, and a few who only snorkled, With Gary we were all able to enjoy ourselves and experience the wonder to our individual comfort level. He is a very knowledgeable and comfortable guide. In the mornings Gary and I would get in an early dive, while the family slept in, then late morning/early afternoon we would all go kayaking, snorkling, and/or diving. I haven't had the opportunity to dive so much in years. Gary had any equipment we needed. The location allows for easy exploration and experiencing the entirety of Kona and is in easy striking distance of Volcanoes Ntl Park. We can't say enough how enjoyable and special our time was staying at Sugar II.

We were a little nervous to trust renting a VRBO for the very frist time however after communicating with Garry and Susan we knew we made the right decision, what a great piece of paradise! Thanks to Garry and his knowledge of the area both in and out of water we were able to see a white tip shark, eel and turtles while kayaking and snorkeling with him. He also pointed us in the right direction to see dolphins in their natural habitate and that was incredible!! Thank you Garry for taking us out kayaking and snrokeling and for lending us your snorkel gear, it was very much appreciated and well put to use! I agree with Garry, the lanai is one of the best places at the Sugar Cottage II and I enjoyed sleeping out there every night of our vacation. The coqui frogs were amazing! I wish I could have taken them home with me to sing me to sleep! The location was perfect to be able to explore the many attractions of the south end of the island and to also visit the more touristy areas of Kona. We can't wait to come back to the Big Island and stay at the Sugar Cottage II again! Mahalo!!

We had a wonderful two week stay at Sugar II Cottage during April this year. This was probably the most relaxing vacation we have ever had, partly because of the secluded beauty of this area. We were surrounded by Hawaiian jungle and all the wildlife that goes with it; we really enjoyed listening to the birds in the daytime and frogs at night. We spent a lot of time in the screened outdoor room of our little cottage, it almost felt like we were up in the tree canopy with the birds. Susan and Gary were very accomadating giving us tips on restaurants, shopping and day trips. We especially enjoyed the kayaking and snorkling with Gary (and yes, a Grandmother can haul her butt out of the water into a kayak in the middle of the bay.) Sugar II was clean and had all the basics we needed. Thanks Susan and Gary for sharing your little slice of paradise. Dan and Linda

We had so much fun staying at SuGar Cottage! The location is very secluded. Even though you know there are other houses in the vicinity, you have the impression you are in the middle of the jungle surrounded by lush vegetation and colorful flowers. The fact that you actually are on the slopes of a volcano enhances the adventure! Our grandson loved the sleeping porch...said it gave him that "camping feeling." Garry took some of us snorkeling and kayaking at local spots that are off the beaten path. What a great time that was! Hope we can return to the Big Island someday. Our stay at SuGar Cottage helped make a positive impression.

Well, I debated about sending in a comment for the SuGar Cottage, because as an avid fisherman, I'm not in the habit of revealing my favorite fishing holes. For starters the home was very clean and well stocked with all the necessary supplies. The location was perfect, far away from the tourist traps, yet convenient to the Volcano National Park, green sand beach, and black sand beach. Above all, Garry was a fabulous dive guide! As a family of four novice divers, we were all completely comfortable and confident with Garry (and Gene!). This trip was the best vacation our family has ever taken. We will be back!
