Try n Rest. The name says it all, really. This vintage 4 bedroom cottage, with a new family room addition, sits on the shore at the mouth of the Potomac River overlooking the Chesapeake Bay. Try n Rest has a fully equipped kitchen, air conditioning, 2 full baths and a large screened in porch. It can accommodate 6-8 guests. A view of the Bay is enjoyed from the living room, porch and front bedrooms.
From the back door, walk 50’ to a large raised deck which overlooks the Bay and the broad white sand beach. Lying around with a good book is enough activity for some, but for those who prefer moving about, there are plenty of outdoor adventures. You can:
- fish off the shore for spot and croaker
- take long walks down the beach,
- stick a crab pot in at the shoreline,
- take your boat into a three mile long salt water creek
- play croquet or horseshoes in the large back yard
- ride your bikes on miles of flat quiet roads.
Public boat launching sites are within a 15 minute drive at the Great Wicomico River and the Little Wicomico River.
Try n Rest has no TV on purpose as we find this to be a place to enjoy games, books, and conversation.
You have selected an area not only steeped in early Virginia history, but also with memorable restaurants, such as historic 18th Century Hughlett’s Tavern and waterfront seafood restaurants in Reedville. A fifteen minute drive from Try n Rest takes you to Reedville (check out the Victorian houses and the Waterman’s Museum); a thirty minute ride reaches Irvington, and White Stone (towns with resort shopping and restaurants). Winery tours are in the area. You will discover Antique stores and Junque shops all through the area. Public golf courses are available at Tides Inn Resort and in the town of Callao. Finally, from Reedville, you can board a Tangier Island Cruise.
Couples tell us this quiet and beautiful spot is a perfect place for a romantic getaway or to celebrate an anniversary.
This is a great location for kids. The wide, sandy, safe beach leads to water with soft, sandy bottom that very gradually gets deep. Sandbars provide splashy water play with water less than 1 foot deep. There is a 14 foot restored waterman's crab boat parked on the front yard for kids to play in. Numerous indoor and yard games are provided. Seaside wildlife abounds. Fishing from shore is sometimes successful in catching small fish.
Try N Rest is located 2.5 hours southeast of Northern Virginia/Washington D.C. area, or 2 hours northeast of Richmond, Virginia.

Historic Northern Neck Get-A-Way

We wanted a quiet place with a sandy beach without the crowds, noise & lines that Labor Day Weekend brings to most resort towns. After a look on-line we found the Try'n Rest cottage on the southern shore of the Potomac River where it meets the Chesapeake Bay. What a delightful time we had, a perfect place to take the family for some down-time. My 5 yr old son never stopped running & playing on the beach with my husband & I got to read a magazine or two. The cottage is from 1950, cozy, rustic & comfortable, having everything your might need for a family vacation at the beach. We did want to crab, but did not find a way to do it, next time. There is much to do in this area if you like history, seafood & beach time. We ate local seafood: crabs, oysters, she-crab soup, crabcakes, & more crab. Other local offerings: fried green tomatoes, Smithfield ham, hush puppies, grits, bbq (lots to be found) & plenty of farm stands along the way. We found a Harvest Festival (grapes), local farmers markets, good ice cream, & more history than in most places dating back to the 1600's. Stratford Hall (birthplace of Robert E. Lee) is a must: tour the house, eat lunch, & roam the grounds. There are cliffs there overlooking the Potomac River with fossils plentiful. The birthplace of George Washington is equally interesting & visually stunning, also on the Potomac along the way to Reedville where the cottage awaits. We saw much wildlife but had hoped to see dolphins while we were visiting. The last hour of our time at the cottage was spent on the beach. After willing the heck out of a dolphin sighting, they came, an entire pod of them came swimming by to prove to my little boy & husband that they could come that far up the Chesapeake & into the month of September! This was the perfect way to end our time at the cottage. Thank you Carter Family. I sure hope to return to your little piece of Heaven by the Bay. It was just delightful & peaceful. Water is beautiful, and can been seen from many windows in the house. Home is very kid friendly. Located in very quiet and rural area. Stayed for 8 days, and only viewed 4 other people on the beach the entire time. Safe beach and water for young and older. Shallow water, yet we were visited by 7 dolphins. Grocery store within a 7 minute drive. We would love to rent again. Owner very informative of area and home. Wonderful seafood restaurant in Reedville.
