The perfect get away for the artist who can't stop working on vacation or just wants to spend some time in a retreat of light and silence and nature to get some big paintings done. Only 2 hours away from both Rome and Florence, there are hundreds of enlightening day trips one can go on and still return for the magnificent summer sunset and a few more hours in the stdio. The property is what is known as a "Forrestiera" , where visitors would spend the night, but it is also had a small private chapel that has now been made into the bedroom. The small stone cottage overlooks the valley and has a view of the nearby village with it's romanesque bell tower. It belonged to a working farm where everything was produced from olive oil and wine to flour and bread and cheese. The farm buildings are now artist studios with plenty of space and natural light and even an electric ceramic kiln.
Accallame is situated at 600 meters on a bluff surrounded by mostly forest with pastures and some cultivated fields. The walks, all beautiful are varied from the easy almost level sauntering, flower picking sort to the more energetic mountain hiking. The trails are marked and published in hiking books. There are few insects and the nights are always cool enough for a good sleep. There is "little light pollution" in the night sky above us, so it is a very good place for gazing at the stars.
The cottage is not far from Giotto in Assissi and only a short train trip down to Rome. This is a quiet place full of light, birdsong and books and art. But some great parties can be had here as well. |
