Hawaiian Lifestyle awaits you in this 105 year old notched ohia log cabin located one mile from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, home of Madam Pele, the fire goddess, and Mata, the love goddess. This rustic, charming hideaway is set in a lush, native tropical rain forest among tree ferns, ginger, purple princess flowers and tall sugi pines.

This log cabin is one of the first homes built in this historic area, yet it is fully equipped with modern conveniences and offers a full kitchen and bath, television, cable, VCR, cassette player and telephone. The double winding staircase leads to sleeping space for four, on a king and double bed. Two additional guests can sleep downstairs by the fire on the two sofas. Years ago, cowboys drove cattle through here and used the cabin as their rest stop. Rumor has it that this may have also been a speakeasy during prohibition. Warm yourself by the wood stove and let your mind wonder at the tales the log walls could tell.

We have lived on the Big Island for 24 years. It was a treat for us to spend our 25th wedding anniversary in Hale Ohia Log Cabin. This authentic log cabin built in 1901 was a great experience for both of us. Fires in the wood burning stove every morning and night, super comfy king size bed, and every convenience that you could imagine. Highly recommend this unique cabin for the ultimate getaway Hawaii Volcano experience. Thank you !

Owner response: Aloha Dorothy, Thanks so much for the kind review and more than these thanks, I want to wish you the best on your Anniversary! You know the Log Cabin was built as a Honeymoon Cabin by William S. Terry for his wife with the help of the local paniolo, so how appropriate for you to celebrate within its arms of round ohia logs. May you and yours have at the least, another 25 years and come back every year if you like! So Much Warmth & Aloha, Cynthia

We LOVED the cabin. If you love rustic lodging with character you will love it too. We slept so well in the cozy beds in the cabin. We also enjoyed the cozy wood stove in the evening And being 2 miles from the national park was awesome. We were able to walk to nearby stores and restaurants.

Even though this cabin is located in the rainforest part of the Big Island, it seemed very centrally located. One of our main stops was the Volcano National Park and this cabin is only a mile or less from the Park, so it was great. Also, we could go to the east, toward Hilo or to the west, to see Kona. We went south to see the black sand beach. We even made the drive up north and got to see Parker cattle ranch. We were please with the quiet, location, small feel of Volcano Village. The cabin itself was well stocked, lots of room, cable tv. No air conditioning needed because it is cool in the rain forest. I wouldn't worry about the rain because if you are planning on leaving each day to see the sites, its not a problem because it can be sunny and warm just a few miles away. If you are looking for something other than the usual hotel room with lots of guests and parking issues to deal with, then I would definitely consider this cabin. No one was around to bother us, but if you need info, the nice folks at the Volcano general store were great. The contact person I dealt with was great. She answered my emails promptly, answered all my questions, and everything was just as she said it would be. Thanks for a memorable 25th wedding anniversary vacation.

Owner response: Hi Toni, Just realized I could respond to my reviews and wanted to let you that another traveler just spent their 25th Anniversary in the Log Cabin also and I shared with them that it was built as a Honeymoon Cabin, so you Anniversary Honeymooners are on a roll! Hoping you also will return to celebrate your strong love for many many more years. With Aloha, Cynthia

We stayed two nights at this cabin, my wife and I, in May 2009. It is only a mile from the Park entrance, so it's quite convenient for a visit. It is in the village, but off on a side road that is easy to miss, as this road is lined with old pine trees covered in moss, O'hia trees, 20ft ferns, and peaceful serene surroundings. It is incredibly well appointed, with every piece of cooking utensil you can dream of. Make sure you bring your groceries from Hilo or Kailua though, because things are extremely expensive at the village itself. The best thing is waking up at sunrise and getting in the skylighted shower. Then go out for a walk along the lane and LISTEN TO THE BIRDS! You will hear, and maybe even see, hundreds of rare birds exclusive to the Hawaiian Islands that can only be found at high elevations, as the cabin sits at about 3500 feet above sea level. These bird species are all threatened, due to encroachment to their natural habitat by invasive species, feral cats, mongooses, rats, mosquitoes etc. that populate the low lands. There is a wood stove/fireplace, which comes in handy as nights can be chilly at that elevation, and although we had glorious weather the whole time we were there, that is not typical, as this is a rain forest environment. We live in the Yukon, in Canada, and this was a lot like coming home for us, as the log cabin looks strangely like the ones in and around Dawson City and the Klondike. Same era, I suppose: the Klondike Gold Rush happened in 1898 and died out by 1901. I wouldn't be surprised that some of the folks that went to the Klondike and didn't get rich, which was about 99%, ended up moving to the Hawaii next in search of fortune, fame and adventure. If you are a lover of Mother Nature, this is for you!

Owner response: Dear Jean-Francois, As you came from so far away, more than likely you have not been back since, but this old broad just realized that one can actually respond to a review and just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate the review you gave the Log Cabin back in 2009. Here?s hoping you can make another journey to our Paradise Isles and once again, rest well at The Log Cabin. Warm Aloha, Cynthia
