The Vacation Home: Newly renovated on the stunning blue Pacific Ocean, Kauai Paradise House is a truly unique oceanfront and riverfront property featuring its own private beach, oceanfront views, 3 king-bed suites (the third of which can be converted to 2 twin beds if desired), gourmet kitchen, travertine tile floors, 3 marble bathrooms, great room with entertainment center, covered lanai, lush backyard, and private deck and dock.

This sophisticated home with a resort feel boasts thoughtful touches throughout, including Tommy Bahama furniture, luxury linens, dual master suites with king-size beds and walk-in showers, new gourmet kitchen with top-of-the-line stainless-steel appliances (including toaster oven, blender and coffee maker), marble guest bathroom with large walk-in shower, spacious family room with TV and DVD/CD player, high-speed Internet, telephone, TVs and DVDs in every bedroom, gas BBQ on the covered lanai overlooking the deep blue sea, and private oceanfront deck with steps down to your own boat dock.

The Island: Kauai, the "Garden Island," is composed of a diverse terrain that is home to rain forests, canyons, cliffs and beaches. To the north is the rugged Na Pali district, with peaks as high as 4,000 feet, and remnants of ancient places of worship. On the island's east side, the Wailua River wends its way through dense forests and plunges over waterfalls before emptying into the Pacific Ocean. To the south is the tourist district, once the vacation destination of royalty. On the west side, is the sleepy town of Waimea, near where Captain Cook first landed. In the center of the island is Mount Wai'ale'ale, the Earth's rainiest spot.

Activities: Rent a kayak (a local vendor offers 7 days for the price of 5!) and paddle right from the private dock to the private and peaceful white sandy beach, or paddle up the quiet Wainiha River to explore the lush green island. In addition to the private beach in front of your vacation home, you can drive a few minutes north for world-famous surfing, diving and snorkeling at Tunnels Beach, or continue past the wet and dry caves to the end of the road at Haena. Snorkel there, or start your North Shore hike along Kauai's famed Na Pali coastline. Also available nearby are scuba diving, wind-surfing, sailing, deep sea fishing, submarine tours, top-flight golf courses, spas, hiking, horseback riding, helicopter tours, and shopping and dining. Alternatively, you can just relax on the lanai or private deck in the ocean breeze, or stroll across the street for the daily paper and a cup of coffee and exotic island snack at the historic Wainiha General Store, or for a hot authentic Hawaiian breakfast or lunch at Red Hot Mama's restaurant.

    Alice Ely ,
    • We stayed at this property in late Sept. '09. It met or exceeded our expectations in every way. Very tastefully and thoughtfully laid out inside, ingeniously oriented to the water with plantings on either side so that, even though the house sits quite close to its neighbors, you are in a totally private setting. The "private beach is actually a broad sandbar which can be accessed by a short kayak paddle (we rented two single kayaks for $20 a day and kept them tied up at the dock all week) or, walk down the road past the two little bridges, and you can walk out to the sandbar. Yes, other people do use the beach but not often, and, as the river mouth separates you from the sandbar you won't feel they are walking across your "front lawn", (as one can with some oceanfront properties). The house is so well equipped with beach chairs, umbrellas and the like, even children's beach toys, that you will feel well supplied for any beach activity. We loved watching the waves at sunrise, right from our bed, and we enjoyed cooking and having dinner and drinks on the lanai each night; we joked that it had the best waterfront dining on the North shore, so why go out?! Kudos to the owners for creating such a lovely vacation rental. We hope to return.(a note about kayaking; the Wainiha river has two forks that are navigable for only a short distance, nonetheless we paddled out each morning -- except for the two that it rained -- as paddling around the little bay and upstream made the perfect start to the day. Saw Hawaiian coots, moorhens and a frigate bird, whom we christened Freddie, who appeared to live there, plus night herons and others passing through. I wouldn't swim in the river mouth, though; there were warnings about bacteria in the freshwater. the sandbar beach itself looked too rough for swimming but with Tunnels and Kee beaches just down the road, there are plenty of options if the seas are calm. (which they were, 60% of the time, when we were there in Sept.)
