The "Lake House" on Crystal Lake in Gilmanton Iron Works is a magical place where you step back in time. The cottage was built over fifty years ago and still retains the charm and warmth of summer vacation homes.
The interior has honey colored pine walls and modern sky lights to make it both bright and cozy. The true splendor of the Lake House is its location on the water. In the 1960s, the previous owners built a grand dock with a deck overhead, which juts out into the lake by 20 feet. When you sit on the deck you are sitting out in the lake.
The cottage faces East and the lucky person who gets up early sees the sun come up from behind the mountains. The evening moonrise and soft ripple of moonlight on the water is enchanting. By noontime the deck has gone from sunny morning light to cool afternoon shade. You can eat lunch on the deck while watching the boats or rest on the lounge chair and listen to the loons.
For families with young children this is a great place. I had my two then toddlers there, and it is completely childproof. Even though you are on the lake, the deck is made such that the children cannot climb up the rails, and they cannot open the gate out off of the deck. If you lock the screen doors (as I did), the children are completely contained in the cottage. There is a nice sandy bottom swimming area at the end of the dock with a very nice shallow area for the kids. Finally, but not last, there is a piano in the cottage for lots of musical fun.
$850/week, seven day rental.
