More incredible than the pictures. This place is absolutely breathtaking and was the perfect place to relax and truly breath. Very close walk to a pristine beach, short drive to the town of Gualala, and right across the street from delicious food at St. Orres restaurant. I only wish we could have stayed longer but will surely return. The owner/management was extremely helpful and organized. Completely hassle free and everything we needed was at the home. You will not regret staying here.

Our family of four, with two young boys (6 and 9), drove from Vancouver, BC with stops along the Oregon coast and stayed for 7 nights in Aug 2011. I found the reviews here to be accurate and everything as expected regarding the location, layout, and amenities. Barbara was very helpful and she made sure that our experience was a smooth one. We loved the home and setting and will return again. I would recommend it where you're looking to relax and getaway. My one critique: the BBQ has seen better days and should be refreshed or replaced (although it didn't stop us from using it every day!). The views from the main living spaces and large deck are perhaps better than the pictures. There has been so much care in the selection of furnishings, appliances, art, and tiling and how it all comes together...it makes you feel good to be there. I described it to my wife as the first IKEA free home I've been in for years! The third bedroom has a full bathroom, small refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, and TV as well as a separate shaded patio and sitting area which would be handy if you were travelling with another couple or in-laws. There is a full wash/dryer combo and nice garage. The home is situated on a quiet side road with a great and unobstructed view overlooking Cooks beach. Cooks is an easy and pleasant 5 minute stroll. The path down has been improved by the local preservation society and has steps cut out and a landing area. Nearby Gualala is a small town but has several restaurants, a good espresso place, two markets, a sports/recreation store, pharmacy and two gas stations. Everything you need. Other nearby beaches include Anchor Bay (for the best skim boarding) and Schooner Cove which is also very nice (also an easy stroll from the road). Other: Elk sometimes wander through the backyard, the bird feeder attracts beautiful birds. San Fran is 2.45 hours drive and you could include this in your plans. PCH1 offers spectacular views driving either direction. On this part of the coast there is often fog that rolls in and out depending on conditions. It can set down on the beach during the day and move back or dissipate quickly or slowly, you just never know. Only 500 feet back it could be blue skies and sun. All weather providers were inaccurate when it came to Gualala. I think they measure from the airport which is set back and less susceptible to the mist. This shouldn't dissuade you, just something to be aware of.
Owner response:Thank you so much for your wonderful review! We look forward to your return to the North Coast of California. Happy Trails, Barbara

This was as beautiful in person as it was online. Our only problem was that it was sold and escrow had closed and had new owners that were in Europe. I don't know if it was because it was between owners but there was no TV/Satelite reception, and although the view was gorgeous I would have liked to have seen the news at least. Also there were a few other troubles, the broiler in the kitchen did not work, I had to figure out the trouble with the garbage disposal, I couldn't find the garage opener from the instructions and had to talk with the realator to find out where the garage opener was. The internet also didn't work again I don't know if it was because it was between owners. The house overall was beautiful and we enjoyed ourselves greatly, but I do wish everything worked without a hitch. I'd rent this house again if it is still available. Also some extra towels would have been nice.
Owner response:I am so sorry that this guest was inconvenienced by the TV not being connected, they were caught in the transition between owners. Thankfully that is corrected and we now have Direct TV up and running. When I spoke with her she told me she had the internet so I am puzzled by that. The Viking stove and oven is convection and there is a switch she must not have realized needed to be put in the on position to run the oven and broiler. I will put better instructions by the stove. I will have the garbage disposal checked, as far as I know she is the only one to have trouble with the disposal or finding the garage opener. I will attempt to discribe better the location. I am happy she loved the house and hope she will come and visit us again.....

July 14, 2008 To the Schmitt's Thanks for opening your beautiful home to us. The views are breathtaking, the weather was just wonderful, it was si nice to get close to nature-the birds, the deer, and whales at the ocean. 8.18.08 What a beautiful home you have built with attention to detail and well thought out. Love the sweeping views. Noren, your artwork is unbelievable. You have a real gift. My children enjoyed their stay, and we shall return. We enjoyed seeing a mama deer and her baby out back by the swing. Lat night we saw several whale sprayings in the distance. Cooks beach is nice and close. It was perfect for a last minute retreat before the craziness of school begins and we needed it so much. Michelle Torres

8.1.08 to 8.9.08 Thanks so much for sharing the wonderful house with us. We enjoyed every aspect of it... the awesome views, the decks with wonderful teak furniture, your well layed-out kitchen, very!! comfortable beds, the fireplaces, master bath, etc. We saw deer at the windows, sea lions at the rocks and a spray from a whale. Had drop dead gorgeous weather... and were charmed by Gualala. The Surf supermarket is fabulous too. We'll have to plan a trip some other year for the spring. This was a great way to see in my 50th birthday. Sincerely, Bernadette, Steve, Susie, Jim, Maria and Alan.

October 8, 2008 to November 7, 2008 We are bittersweet...there is so much to return home to but we are sad to leave this paradise. Your home is amazing...and I keep forgetting to tell you how much we have enjoyed your artwork. I'd love to hear more about your pieces...especially the works displayed under glass...very nice. We were looking for a getaway...a place to contemplate, meditate and plan the 'next' phase of our project. This home was more than we could have imagined. How fortunate we are when our expectations are met in this life...and here, ours were exceeded! Many thanks for your hospitality! We are back in SA. This is the first time EVER in all of our years of traveling that I haven't been glad to get home...I honestly could have stayed in your beautiful home another month! I'm going through Gualala withdrawal I think. Take care, Tanji

A moment " somewhere in time"! We are celebrating our Thanksgiving with family. This will truly hold memories to be cherished because of the beauty and serenity this home offers. As our last evening comes to an end, the crescent moon lights the horizon, dusted with billows of ocean fog and two stars light the sky. There are truly no words...except serenity and meditation of your soul. As I sit on my bench outside the master suite, I find balance within nature, taking me away, giving me a sense calmness of the mind. My family around me, the ravens soaring in the morning air peacefully tumbling in the up draft, waves pounding and spray and foam showing the power our ocean has to offer-again truly my moment in time! Thank you for allowing us to experience such a beautiful home. Lovetta

Noren, The care in design and construction of this fine house provided a deightful retreat for us in a delightful little town. The wonderful solitude and the sweeping ocean views have been such a treat for us each day. Every feature we discovered each day provided new enjoyment-from the BBQ and handsome deck, furniture, to the best bed we have ever slept in! Your discriminating taste and style shows. You have provided all the needs a family requires for a most enjoyable time. Your dining table provided a beautiful vista for each nights sunset over our dinner. Terrific views.
