The house is named the Carousel because it is an octagon, designed with rooms arranged around about a massive central post. It is a cozy, two bedroom house on a rocky bluff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The house has a spectacular view of Metinic, Two Bush and Matinicus Islands. It sits on a quiet dead-end road near the village of Tenants Harbor and in the small community of Harts Neck. Tenants Harbor is about 12 miles from Rockland, an interesting town with museums and galleries.
The layout consists, moving counter-clockwise, of the front hall, 2 bedrooms, each with a newly renovated private bathroom, a welcoming living room/dining room facing the ocean and a well equipped, updated kitchen with gas stove and dishwasher. A porch off the dining room overlooks the cliffs and is the perfect place to relax or to entertain. Upstairs, there is an open loft with skylights, ideal as a studio or third bedroom. There is heat from an airtight Reliant wood stove, a gas monitor and baseboard electric units. For rainy days there is also also cable TV and a DVD player.
The ocean is endlessly fascinating! With a clear northwester, you can see hundreds of islands, yachts and lobsterman pulling their traps, while in the fog, you are enclosed in your private world. There are many wonderful places to walk or ride bikes, and renters have the use of a private dock and tennis court nearby. The town also offers warm water quarry swimming and the opportunity for boating of all kinds. The Rockland area has many terrific restaurants, galleries and museums.
Families looking for day camp for their children could take advantage of the excellent Blueberry Cove camp down the street.
An added note: no one should visit without taking the day trip out to Monhegan!

We had 8 nights in this charming octagonal house, with gorgeous views from its great room/dining room, and the sound of crashing surf even in our bedroom. It was cold outside, but the wood stove and additional space heaters kept us comfortable. We were thrilled to find such a site with only a couple of days notice, and appreciate the owners accommodating us when nearly all else in Maine had closed down for the season. Tenants Harbor is a non-tourist town, with most of the action occurring at the General Store this time of the year. Our bed and linens were comfortable, the kitchen functional, and overall effect was the best of coastal Maine. We hope to return during warm weather, spend more time on the spacious deck, and share the summer experience with our grandchildren.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, sightseeing, families with young children.
Owner response: Thank you for your note. We are glad you could visit and do hope you come back in the more busy summer months, where you can eat, window shop and visit art galleries in nearby Rockland and Camden and enjoy a meal by the sea in Port Clyde or other seaside locales. Other exciting news is that we have renovated our kitchen and bathrooms over the winter months. Best. Jenifer.

The Carousel is about as good a getaway as one could want. Gorgeous inside and out, quiet and secluded, astounding ocean views from almost every window, the sounds of crashing waves and lobster boats and nature. The furniture and beds are comfortable and elegant, the kitchen excellent for cooking, the house cozy and inviting. Days before we had to leave and we were already planning on returning for another stay.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, sightseeing.

This is the second year that we've spent the month of July at this wonderful home. It's the perfect size for a couple (and our dog) or could easily accomodate a larger group. The setting is magical... A wide expanse of windows overlooks the ocean and we never tire of the sound of waves hitting the rocky shoreline just a few feet beyond the deck. It's our favorite place to unwind, relax and renew! We'll definitely be back!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway.

We had a wonderful time at the Carousel. We live in Alabama, and it was our first trip to Maine. We feel like we stayed in the "old Maine" and not in a "yuppie suburb of Boston". Jenifer was wonderful about meeting our needs and she suggested a day trip to Monhegan Island. It was an extraordinary day. We will never forget the beauty and hospitality of Maine. I hope to return one day. Patti EasonDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 3/4
