Nestled among the foothills of St. Francis’ beloved Mount Subasio, this 16th century stone farmhouse, once part of a larger castle, has been carefully remodeled into guest apartments which blend historic features and modern amenities. The terra-cotta floors, hand painted tiles, antique and period country furnishings, and beautiful views overlooking the surrounding hills are just some of the features admired by our guests.
Just six kilometers from the medieval hill town of Assisi and within the Mount Subasio Regional Park, the Brigolante farm, owned and worked by the Bagnoli family for more than eight generations, offers both a unique view into Italian rural life and a convenient and comfortable base from which guests can visit the famed nearby towns of Umbria, Tuscany, and the Marches including Orvieto, Spoleto, Gubbio, Perugia, Siena, Florence, San Gimignano, and Urbino and natural sights including Lake Trasimeno, the Marmore Waterfall and the Sibilline Mountain National Park.
Brigolante offers three guest apartments, each with its own distinct personality:
La Loggetta is located on the second floor of the house and offers a small private porch from which guests can enjoy beautiful views of Mount Subasio and the surrounding foothills. A luxurious bathroom with enclosed shower and separate whirlpool bath, and a few furnishings that would delight any antique aficionado complete this charming apartment.
La Stalletta is a cozy, independent annex to the main house, and was renovated with the romantic couple in mind. This apartment features an exposed beam and tile ceiling and direct access to the furnished patio.
Il Focolare is a popular choice among guests who enjoy this apartment's rustic country charm and wood burning fireplace. This apartment is also handicapped accessible.
The Bagnoli family prides itself on its famous Italian hospitality. We welcome our guests to a relaxing and memorable stay in the historic Umbrian hills.

The Unique Benefits at this Apartment
At Brigolante Agritourism, we treat our holiday rental clients as if they were guests in our own home… because they are! We live and work here at Brigolante, which means that we are available to offer our guests help and advice at their convenience. We live here in these beautiful Umbrian hills because we are passionate about this area, its history and culture, and we want to share our passion with you.
Owner's Map of Assisi
Rebecca Winke, originally from Chicago, joined her husband Stefano Bagnoli in Assisi in 1993, and shortly thereafter the couple began a lengthy renovation project on the Brigolante farmhouse, which has been in the Bagnoli family for at least eight generations. After a new home was constructed by the family in the 1970's, the historic farmhouse, once attached to the neighboring houses as part of a medieval hilltop castle and, it is suspected, monastery, had fallen into ruin.
Because it had become dangerously unstable, the couple began doing small "fix-it-up" weekend projects on the building and surrounding property. As work went on, the project mushroomed over several years and, simultaneously, there was a boom in popularity of farm holidays in Tuscany and Umbria, so the Bagnolis decided to carve out vacation apartments from the farmhouse and see if the resulting vacation rental business could inject new life into the family farm, run by Stefano's parents, Ugo and Emma.
The result has been more successful than they could have suspected, as the managing the apartment rentals has gone from a hobby to a career for Rebecca and she and Stefano both fear they may never get Stefano's parents to retire now that they have guests poking around the barns and garden to appreciate their hard work.
The main farmhouses on Brigolante can be traced back at least to 1100, the date on a piece of manuscript recently found in the local archives documenting the transfer of this property to Brigulo and his wife Berta.
The family farm is historic as well, and was part of an immense landholding until the last century, when the property was divided among Stefano's great-great-grandfather's 9 siblings; the surrounding properties are almost all still owned by the Bagnoli's relatives.

Beautifully renovated and perfectly maintained apartments in a bucolic setting on a real Umbrian farm, hosted by a charming American expatriate who not only goes out of her way to make sure her guests are comfortable, but is also happy to share her exhaustive local knowledge of what to do and see. Brigolante was a focal point of a wonderful vacation.

After a hectic week in Rome and a harrowing drive from Perugia (we drive on the OTHER side of the road in Australia!) Brigolante was like a slice of heaven- a warm, cosy, comfortable bed, beautifully decorated and well-equipped apartment, and a greeting basket of fresh farm eggs, home-produced olive oil, jam and honey, a fennel bulb, and fresh herbs. The apartment was spotlessly clean, and our hosts were warm and friendly. A highlight was the Thursday night Family Dinner, where fellow guests and our hosts enjoyed delicious food and great company. They very kindly catered to my gluten-free dietary requirements. Photos couldn't adequately depict how beautiful the views from our room were, nor the tasteful decor. There are lots of closeby towns to visit and explore, and our host was a mine of information. We loved Brigolante- it is one of our favourite and surprisingly best-value spots in Italy.

This was our first trip to Brigolante and Umbria.....d hopefully the first of many. The accommodation was first class - clean, well maintained and with beautiful views over the surrounding hillside. Visiting Easter week, the accommodation was a convenient distance (5 mins by car) from Assisi to avoid the throngs of visitors. Rebecca and her extended family were wonderful hosts. Our kids had lots of company and the freedom to enjoy it and as any travelling parent knows, if the kids are happy, we can relax and that makes a great holiday for everyone. The rural location and the bustle of family life all around offer a great insight into the local way of life. The passion of the hosts for Umbria and determination to offer their guests a memorable Italian experience is obvious throughout the visit. We had a wonderful time, genuinely hope to return soon and would not hesitate to recommend to anyone travelling to the area for a rural break with or without kids.

Brigolante is an agritourismo about 6 km north of lovely Assisi. Our apartment was, I believe, one of four on the property. It was very clean, comfortable and attractive. Spring cut flowers in the room were a nice addition. The location is well suited to touring Umbria. We had a very pleasant week at Brigolante and would hope to return.

We had a very enjoyable stay at Brigolante in April of this year. Our apartment was attractive, well cared for, and comfortable. Viewing the grounds of the farm and the nearby hills of Umbria was very pleasant. It is about 6 km north of lovely Assisi. I would recommend this property to anyone interested in exploring Assisi and/or Umbria. It is an excellent value

We stayed in La Loggetta in early Spring 2004. The apartment is great value, beautifully furnished and equipped, the surrounding countryside is stunning, the hosts are ever helpful but unobtrusive (and the family dogs are especially welcoming if you take them for walks!). The location is ideal for visiting the famous Umbrian hill towns, exploring the beautiful countryside and is a stone's throw from Assisi. We would highly recommend Brigolante.

A+++++. We had a great stay at Brigolante. Located on a working farm outside of Assisi, we found it to be a beautiful location, and a convenient base from which to explore Umbria. The hospitality was amazing, including free farm fresh eggs, local wine, and homemade pasta and pesto from the owner's mother-in-law. These treats were way above and beyond the level of hospitality we expected and were deeply appreciated. The owner is an American ex-pat who speaks english and has an impressive knowledge of the area. In addition to Assisi, we were able to explore Orvieto, Spello, Bevagna, Montefalco, and Gubbio from this location. A great value and an unforgetable experience! Derek Barker, Brooklyn NY

4/20/04. We stayed for two weeks in La Loggetta during the late autumn of 2003 and have put off writing about our stay because prior guests had already stated the obvious. At that time of the year however, the farm is like the Italian answer to Arcadia. Stand behind the "main house" on a clear morning with no one else around, and you will know what we mean. The landscape and light are remarkably beautiful, almost otherworldly. So if you are looking for an Italian retreat or just a peaceful base in Umbria, we highly recommend this guest house. The owners are charming too. We sorely regretted not speaking Italian, especially because the patriarch of the clan looks like he knows a great deal about the region and seemed to want to communicate also. We miss Indi, the friendly black dog who was our guide and constant companion on the farm. We would have loved to take her home with us, which would have been a cruel fate for Indi, as our place is no comparison to hers. The only caution we have is for people who have rarely driven on country roads. Plan to arrive in daylight on a clear day (remember this is mountainous terrain, which often means fog). The winding dirt road leading to the property is driveable, but it takes some skill and attention. So don't be playing with the radio :-).

"My wife and I have travelled to Italy many times and have stayed at a multitude of agrituristicas and farm apartments. I can honestly say that Brigolante was our favorite of the 20+ places we have stayed. The apartment was immaculate, the kitchen well-equipped, and the location ideal for hiking and for day trips to many Umbrian and Tuscan locations. What set it far above the rest was the hospitality of our hosts. Not only was Rebecca attentive to our every need, the extended family was also very cordial and generous. Even the dogs befriended us our first day there! I would highly reccommend Brigolante for anyone requiring a home base in Umbria or Toscana." Jeffrey Ganssle, USA
