Beautifully renovated and perfectly maintained apartments in a bucolic setting on a real Umbrian farm, hosted by a charming American expatriate who not only goes out of her way to make sure her guests are comfortable, but is also happy to share her exhaustive local knowledge of what to do and see. Brigolante was a focal point of a wonderful vacation.

After a hectic week in Rome and a harrowing drive from Perugia (we drive on the OTHER side of the road in Australia!) Brigolante was like a slice of heaven- a warm, cosy, comfortable bed, beautifully decorated and well-equipped apartment, and a greeting basket of fresh farm eggs, home-produced olive oil, jam and honey, a fennel bulb, and fresh herbs. The apartment was spotlessly clean, and our hosts were warm and friendly. A highlight was the Thursday night Family Dinner, where fellow guests and our hosts enjoyed delicious food and great company. They very kindly catered to my gluten-free dietary requirements. Photos couldn't adequately depict how beautiful the views from our room were, nor the tasteful decor. There are lots of closeby towns to visit and explore, and our host was a mine of information. We loved Brigolante- it is one of our favourite and surprisingly best-value spots in Italy.

Brigolante is an agritourismo about 6 km north of lovely Assisi. Our apartment was, I believe, one of four on the property. It was very clean, comfortable and attractive. Spring cut flowers in the room were a nice addition. The location is well suited to touring Umbria. We had a very pleasant week at Brigolante and would hope to return.

This was our first trip to Brigolante and Umbria.....d hopefully the first of many. The accommodation was first class - clean, well maintained and with beautiful views over the surrounding hillside. Visiting Easter week, the accommodation was a convenient distance (5 mins by car) from Assisi to avoid the throngs of visitors. Rebecca and her extended family were wonderful hosts. Our kids had lots of company and the freedom to enjoy it and as any travelling parent knows, if the kids are happy, we can relax and that makes a great holiday for everyone. The rural location and the bustle of family life all around offer a great insight into the local way of life. The passion of the hosts for Umbria and determination to offer their guests a memorable Italian experience is obvious throughout the visit. We had a wonderful time, genuinely hope to return soon and would not hesitate to recommend to anyone travelling to the area for a rural break with or without kids.

We had a very enjoyable stay at Brigolante in April of this year. Our apartment was attractive, well cared for, and comfortable. Viewing the grounds of the farm and the nearby hills of Umbria was very pleasant. It is about 6 km north of lovely Assisi. I would recommend this property to anyone interested in exploring Assisi and/or Umbria. It is an excellent value

Brigolante made traveling with young children easy! The location is idyllic, the accommodations charming and complete, the views breathtaking. It was a dream vacation, and we would return to Brigolante in an instant. I highly recommend staying here!

We stayed in La Loggetta in early Spring 2004. The apartment is great value, beautifully furnished and equipped, the surrounding countryside is stunning, the hosts are ever helpful but unobtrusive (and the family dogs are especially welcoming if you take them for walks!). The location is ideal for visiting the famous Umbrian hill towns, exploring the beautiful countryside and is a stone's throw from Assisi. We would highly recommend Brigolante.

A+++++. We had a great stay at Brigolante. Located on a working farm outside of Assisi, we found it to be a beautiful location, and a convenient base from which to explore Umbria. The hospitality was amazing, including free farm fresh eggs, local wine, and homemade pasta and pesto from the owner's mother-in-law. These treats were way above and beyond the level of hospitality we expected and were deeply appreciated. The owner is an American ex-pat who speaks english and has an impressive knowledge of the area. In addition to Assisi, we were able to explore Orvieto, Spello, Bevagna, Montefalco, and Gubbio from this location. A great value and an unforgetable experience! Derek Barker, Brooklyn NY

4/20/04. We stayed for two weeks in La Loggetta during the late autumn of 2003 and have put off writing about our stay because prior guests had already stated the obvious. At that time of the year however, the farm is like the Italian answer to Arcadia. Stand behind the "main house" on a clear morning with no one else around, and you will know what we mean. The landscape and light are remarkably beautiful, almost otherworldly. So if you are looking for an Italian retreat or just a peaceful base in Umbria, we highly recommend this guest house. The owners are charming too. We sorely regretted not speaking Italian, especially because the patriarch of the clan looks like he knows a great deal about the region and seemed to want to communicate also. We miss Indi, the friendly black dog who was our guide and constant companion on the farm. We would have loved to take her home with us, which would have been a cruel fate for Indi, as our place is no comparison to hers. The only caution we have is for people who have rarely driven on country roads. Plan to arrive in daylight on a clear day (remember this is mountainous terrain, which often means fog). The winding dirt road leading to the property is driveable, but it takes some skill and attention. So don't be playing with the radio :-).

"My wife and I have travelled to Italy many times and have stayed at a multitude of agrituristicas and farm apartments. I can honestly say that Brigolante was our favorite of the 20+ places we have stayed. The apartment was immaculate, the kitchen well-equipped, and the location ideal for hiking and for day trips to many Umbrian and Tuscan locations. What set it far above the rest was the hospitality of our hosts. Not only was Rebecca attentive to our every need, the extended family was also very cordial and generous. Even the dogs befriended us our first day there! I would highly reccommend Brigolante for anyone requiring a home base in Umbria or Toscana." Jeffrey Ganssle, USA

"In addition to first rate accomodations (including washer in apartment, ironing board, hair dryer, etc.), the welcoming, personal touches are what makes staying at Brigolante a most memorable experience and a great travel value. The setting is rural and scenic, but wonderful hill towns of every size are within an easy drive. This was our favorite stop in four weeks in Umbria and Tuscany!" Sandi Hanafin, USA

"Brigolante apartments... the apartment was all as stated. Rebecca is really charming and helpful, always trying to do a nice thing for those she accommodates (i.e. home made salami, pasta, jam, wine, liqueur). As for the apartment it is the most upscale we have encountered, wonderful detail in the way it is finished (1st class bathroom), family heirloom bed... we were surprised to find such quality in a rental. Location... close to town but not too close. We were estatic to find NO NOISE, no noisy people, no noisy dogs (their 2 only bark when a real problem), no noisy highway. We would stay there again without hestation... It's a winner!" Martha Rodriguez, USA

"The location was superb. Umbria is truly the green heart of Italy. After four years of self catering holidays in Italy, we have voted Brigolante as the best yet. La Loggetta was well equipped, the location was superb BUT what is special about Brigolante is the hospitality, the welcome and kindness shown by the family. We shall return, but you other guys go somewhere else!" Greg and Angela Franks, UK

"I cannot imagine how our visit to the Brigolante could have been better. The farmhouse is situated in an amazingly beautiful land preserve outside of Assisi with Mt. Subasio majestically presiding. The house itself has been meticulously restored and reappointed and really does strike the perfect balance between authenticity and comfort. Our reception was warm and we felt carefully looked after, but never hovered over during our stay - again, a very nice balance. We easily took several day trips from the Brigolante as it is a gorgeous and swift trip to the highway. We also made a point of taking a few meandering 'back road' trips and were really pleased that we took the time to see the spaces in between the Umbrian hill towns. Our visit to the Brigolante was in October, but I would gladly visit any time of year. The farmhouse is easily reachable by car from Florence or Rome the same day as your arrival. I have visited Italy often over the last 12 years and my stay at the Brigolante is absolutely the most memorable and authentic Italian experience to date." Dani Newland, USA

"...We are pleased to be able to speak honestly to you about our Umbrian experience. From day one to day seven, Rebecca was a most charming and helpful host. She welcomed us to the property, made sure that we were comfortable and then gave us advice as we required when we required. As non-Italian speakers we called upon Rebecca's assisitance for train bookings and she was pleased to oblige. The Bagnoli family were also very welcoming to us. Although our Italian speaking skills were limited to about twenty words, we communicated and were treated courteously. ... The accommodation was quite adequate for our needs. The apartment we were in was spacious, the bathroom a joy to come back to after a day's travelling. ...Lesley and I spent some great hours tramping up and around the property, accompanied by the dogs - two ingratiating pups who took it upon themselves to protect us and show us the sights. ...You must have a car to make the most of the stay. (That's not to say you would not have an enjoyable time simply staying at the farm and reading, having walks and relaxing - but we used it as a base for Umbria and a bit of Tuscany) The road/track to the property can be an experience but it only looks and sounds bad.... Assisi is only about ten minutes away (five if you drive like an Italian, fifteen if you are of the quieter school of driving). Other places in easy reach that you shouldn't miss are Gubbio and Norcia. Gubbio is a half day trip, while with Norcia take the whole day and go up to the National Park. Rebecca will tell you about the village up there and she is spot-on. But it does have a shop that sells nice icecreams. We took the train up to Florence and on another day down to Rome. We preferred to drive to the Assisi train station and leave the car there rather than face the fun and lunacy of the autostrada and then finding safe parking. If you get the right train, Florence is okay, but the time we had for Rome wasn't long enough. ... I'm probably going on for too long, but the bottom line is that we'd go back in a flash and stay with Rebecca again if the chance was there - we didn't get to all the places we wanted to and there are others we want to go back to. You might find cheaper accomm, you might find accomm with more faciltities, but as I said - we felt welcome, the accomm was clean, comfortable and well maintained and the Bagnolis were great hosts." "We want you to know that our one-week stay at the Brigolante Guest Apartments was one of the finest experiences in touring that we have ever had. The accommodations at Brigolante were all that we had hoped for, and more. Believe the brochure! ... We have only praise for our accommodations and especially for our host, Rebecca. Our apartment, La Loggetta, was spacious, tastefully furnished, well equipped, and extremely comfortable. The kitchenette is very well thought out. We used it every morning for breakfast and most evenings to prepare a light supper.... While we enjoyed the excellent accommodations at Brigolante, what really made our stay memorable was the hospitality of our host. Upon our arrival we found a large bowl full of walnuts and apples, along with a jar of homemade blackberry preserves and a cruet set with a bottle of their own luscious Umbrian olive oil on the table. Our welcome 'aperitivo' consisted of three delicious home made liqueurs and a grappa, of which we tried all. (The bay liqueur was our favorite.) On other evenings Rebecca presented us with a jar of home made pesto, a ball of fresh mozzarella di bufala, a plate of sliced home made salami and a fresh-from-the-oven loaf of focaccia, made by her mother-in-law. Even apart from this extraordinary generosity, Rebecca was the perfect host. She was very attentive to our needs and full of excellent information about what to see and do and where to eat, yet never overbearing. We looked forward to seeing her once or twice a day as if she were a good friend who lived next door. If ever we decide to visit Umbria again - and we have every intention to do so - we will make every effort to stay at the Brigolante. The location is unbeatable, the accommodations are excellent and Rebecca is simply wonderful." John and Lois Durso, USA

"Our stay in Umbria was in July 2001. The internet photos of Brigolante looked very nice, but in reality the house as well as the apartment were even more beautiful. Rebecca's kindness and hospitality were really amazing. She supplied us with helpful information and delicious Italian food. So we felt very comfortable and if we visit Umbria again we would be glad if we could get this apartment again." Georg and Astrid Busse, Germany

"Brigolante has it all... beautiful setting, peaceful location, spacious rooms, gracious, helpful hosts... all these things AND BIG FLUFFY AMERICAN TOWELS!!!! What more could you possible want? Reasonable prices? Farm fresh eggs and anything in the garden you want to pick fresh? A cozy fire with plenty of firewood available? An Italian mother-in-law who sends over a bowl of FRESHLY-MADE pasta? Well, Brigolante has all that too! Even though this is the first rental we have ever done in Italy, I think Brigolante will be the stick I measure all other apartments against. Our apartment, "Il Focolare" is a one bedroom apartment on the ground floor. It's even handicapped-accessible! Once you enter the spacious foyer, just to the left is the huge bathroom with a whirlpool tub, and of course a bidet. And then there are those huge, fluffy, genuine American bath towels! Those waffled dishtowel things are awful! To the right of the foyer, the large room holds the kitchen across the back of the room, and a sofa bed opposite the waist-high fireplace. You can even grill in the fireplace! Our landlord, Rebecca, who is an American married to an Italian, was always there when we needed to ask a question, or two, or three. She helped us out with everything from Where to eat in Trevi to how can we find out about the train schedule to Naples? She was always there, but never in our way. We felt as if we were the only people there, even though there are 2 other aprtments, in-laws, and various aunts and uncles living on Brigolante. The bedroom has a beautiful iron bed, with a queen-sized mattress, and a large armoire with an iron and ironing board hidden inside. There's a washing machine in the kitchen and a clothesline out back.... We look forward to returning to Brigolante one day and do not hesitate to recommend it highly." Art and Barbara Skinner, USA
