Owner info
Year Purchased: 2007
About the owner: This cottage was a labor of love. While in treatment for breast cancer, I needed something to do to divert my attention and rebuild my vision for a future. This cottage is the result of that need. My husband is a general contractor but, I wanted to be the contractor on this project myself, and so that's how it started. I drew up the simple, practical design, organized the sub contractors, and made the interior selections. I love this house and am happy to share it with others who will appreciate the special place that it is and enjoy making wonderful memories with their own families.
Why the Owner Chose Cannon Beach:
The lot was occupied by a Sears Mail Order Kit House (circa 1940 which was originally erected closer to the ocean on the site that now houses Tolovana Inn). It was moved to this lot on Monroe Street in the 1980's and served as a well loved beach cottage for a Portland family for many years. A picture of this house on the day it was moved to this lot on Monroe Street hangs on the wall in the downstairs hallway of the new house.
Interestingly, our realtor (Susan Tone, Windermere - Manzanita) provided us with a copy of the original advertisement on the lots in the East Presidential Area. The plat map outlines the lots for sale, this lot was originally priced at $40.00 back in 1905. What a deal!
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Even though this isn't a beach front or even beach view lot, I am very happy with its location.
It's an easy straight walk just 1.5 blocks to the beach and just a pleasant stroll to downtown. That's a good thing in the summer time, when tourists fill downtown and parking is hard to find. Once you arrive, you don't need to use your car to get around.
The other thing that makes this house special, is that the living room and kitchen are upstairs. The arrangement allows for a perch like view of the trees and neighboring homes. It's light and bright and a very comfortable place to relax.
