Villa Toucan is a Three Bedroom villa with 2.5 bathrooms nestled in a secluded cove 25 minutes from Liberia's International Airport
Within a short drive there are ample opportunities for all the activities Costa Rica is known for: hiking, birdwatching, canoeing, white water rafting, canopy tours, turtle watching, hot spring hopping, monkeying around with monkeys, wildlife watching, coffee plantation tours, mountain biking, horseback riding and more.
The Villa is steps from the beach in the Bahia Pez Vela Resort next to Playa Octotal and 5 kilometers from Playa del Coco. This resort is the ONLY property on this secluded beach that has an abundance of peace and quiet. This villa is one of the beach area villas (second row from beach) so it is an easy, less than a minute, walk to the beach, main pool and restaurant. You can hear waves of the Pacific and chatter of the howler monkeys in the nearby trees from this fully equipped two level home and see Hummingbirds check out the flowers we've planted just for them. You'll also have unlimited access to our small gated community's two pools, restaurant and sea kayaks. The resort has wireless internet, accessible from the villa.
At low tide, you can walk to Playa Ocotal which is a bigger beach and has a few restaurants and hotels. It's otherwise a quick (5 km) drive to Playa Coco which is a bustling town with tons of water sports, restaurants and shops. There are plentiful activities near the villa including scuba diving, fishing, snorkeling, whale watching, bird watching, and canopy tours. You can even get a massage on the beach.
Villa has a living room, full kitchen and dining area, outdoor patio with bbq and three bedrooms/2.5 baths. One BR has a king bed, private bathroom and outdoor balcony. The second bedroom is perfect for a family with kids or just kids having 3 twin beds . The third BR has a queen bed and fold out couch (folds into a large twin/small double). The living room couch also folds into a queen bed and we have an air mattress that can be inflated for one more soul. Villa also has air conditioning, washing machine and dryer, microwave, dvd player, wireless internet and dishwasher.
Villa Toucan is within 1.5 hour drive of three volcanoes
(Tenorio, Miravalles and Ricon de la Vieja), several national
parks (Palo Verde, Ricon de la Vieja, Tenorio, Santa Rosa,
Playa Grande) and dozens of day trip activities including
bird watching, canopy tours, fishing, horseback riding, rafting, hiking, scuba diving, and turtle watching. The two Costa Rica
pre-emiminent tourist destinations: Arenal Volcano and
Monteverde Cloud Forest are a 2-3 hour drive away. The concierge at Bahia Pez Vela can arrange all of these excursions and activities. Or just sit at the beach, enjoy the peace and quiet, get a massage and do nothing. Whatever suits you!

Three BR Beach Villa on Secluded Beach Near Ocotal
Year Purchased: 2007
Why the Owner Chose Playa Ocotal
We wanted a place that was secluded and relaxing but also had outdoor and cultural attractions nearby. The fact it's only 25 minutes from an international airport was also a big draw.
The Unique Benefits at this Villa
The resort is quiet and secluded and very relaxing. If you're looking for a party scene then this is not for you. But for families with kids and couples it's a wonderful place to just kick back. You can even get a massage on the beach while listening to breaking waves and howler monkeys. Then again, if you get tired of all that peace and quiet and want to see and do stuff all the activities Costa Rica offers are very nearby: horseback riding, hiking, zip lining, scuba-diving, rafting, volcanoing, hot springs, etc.
At the end of the road, 5 kilometers from Playa del Coco in by Playa Ocotal

We live in Washington, D.C. where Liz works for the Justice Department as an environmental prosecutor and Henry writes childrens' books, practices law from the house, and takes care of our two children, Hannah and Jonah (ages 7 and 9 in 2009).

6 Weeks at Villa Toucan

We rented the Villa for 6 winter weeks and loved every minute we were there. Every day is a beautiful day. The setting is lovely overlooking the ocean. We swam every day. The black sand beach seldom had anyone else but us on it.Twice a week the massage ladies set up their tables on the sand. The swimming pool is very good for lap swimming as children, if there are any there, have their own pool. There is a very good outdoor restaurant along side the pool where lunch and dinner are served at reasonable prices. The fish is always excellent. Ocotal is well located for excursions to volcanos, the cloud forest, river trips and turtle watching. The staff in the office is very helpful in arranging these trips. It is a short drive into the town where there are several restaurants and an excellent grocery store. Villa Toucan is like having your own second home. It is spacious, quiet and very private. We enjoyed sitting on the master bedroom balcony and watching the monkeys in the trees and the nesting tiger herons as well as many other birds. We plan to return there next winter. Edward and Joan from Chicago
Owner response:We don't disagree. Wish we could spend weeks there.

I stayed at Playa Ocotal in October. The place is a few only a few minutes out from the city. Overall, the place has all you need for a relaxing vacation. The pool is very nice, and fits very nicely into the view from the rooms. The bay is also a big attraction. It is a bit small an closed off, but it is calm and nice for swimming, and i even saw dolphins in it once. Furthermore, there are a few nice walks between the beaches (the nearby bays). Beyond that the Villas themselves are very nice. The upper floor contains the bedrooms, which are all very nice, and the bottom floor has a well furnished kitchen, and a porch. Bottom line, i would definitely recommend it.
Recommended for:Romantic getaway, age 55+, tourists without a car, families with young children.

I recently had the pleasure of renting Villa Toucan in Costa Rica and would highly recommend it. My friends and I loved Bahia Pez Vela's secluded beach (we were the only people on the beach for most of our stay), the gorgeous views, the friendly wildlife and the exceedingly helpful resort staff. It was the first time in Costa Rica for our entire group, and we took advantage of the location to take days trips arranged by the staff to Rincon de la Vieja (for a canopy tour, horseback ride, hotsprings and mudbath) and to Nicaragua, in addition to many blissful days exploring nearby towns and enjoying the resort. The villa itself was wonderful and full of amenities (including a much needed washer/dryer), and we were pleasantly surprised by how convenient anything else we could imagine was to the resort (dining, grocery shopping, nightlife, post office, etc.). And the owners couldn't have been better to rent from -- they answered all of our questions and then some.

This was our second trip to Costa Rica and Bahia Pez Vela Resort. We stayed in Villa Toucan which is conveniently located in the lower half of the resort. The villa was very spacious and comfortable and had great air conditioning, which is very important in this climate. We love the location of the villa which is in close proximity to the beautiful secluded beach, pool and restaurant. We highly recommend this part of the resort. Bahia Pez Vela is a very secluded and beautiful beach area. We truly feel relaxed here in this heavenly place. THere is also lots to do in Cost Rica other than the beach here. We went surfing in Tamarindo, ziplining at the Buena Vista Tour, saw the monkeys and held them at the Monkey Park and enjoyed the wonderful Tico food in the local Sodas. A car is necessary to really get the feel of the area and venture out. THe owners Liz and Henry were very nice and helpful and we are looking forward to coming back again.

This was our second trip to Costa Rica and our first in this villa at Bahia Pez Vela. We loved the location of the villa which is in the lower part of the resort, very close to the beach, pool and reastaurant. The villa is very spacious and comfortable. The air conditioning works very well and we were comfortable our entire stay. (THis is very important here with the temperatures and humidity). The owners Liz and Henry are very nice and helpful. This is a secluded beach resort and very private. We had a very relaxing stay. There is lots to do in Costa Rica. We enjoyed surfing in Tamarindo, THe beach at Playa Conchal, Monkey Park, Mega Combo Tour (zipline) and all the wonderful local food in the Sodas (local Tico restaurants). Note: a car is a must here to be able to explore. We definately plan on coming back.

This was our third year at BPV and our first stay at Villa Toucan #6. We have never been disappointed at BPV and this year was no exception. We travel with two children ages 6 and 9. The pool and the beach are in pristine condition and perfect for both adults and children. Anna, Rosa, and Alan at Papagayos are top notch and very attentive. Katyln will help you with any trip or adventure that one could want while in Costa Rica. Can't wait till next year.

We stayed for a week at Bahia Pez Vela unit 6 and loved it! Our group consisted of three adults and three children ages 6, 8 and 11. There was plenty of space at this lovely villa for all and even a cabinet full of toys for the kids. We loved that the villa was located right by the beach. We flew into Liberia, which was exceptionally convenient (only 25 minutes away.) The beach was perfect for all of the children -- and the adults! We spent hours playing in the water, exploring tidepools, snorkelling, and hiking to a nearby beach. One highlight was watching the sunset while we were in the water. We even saw monkeys in the trees by the beach in the early morning. We also enjoyed both beautiful infinity pools. The beach was very safe and neither the beach nor the pools were ever crowded. There were always just a few friendly people. The staff was great. The office helped us arrange day trips both big and small. We also really enjoyed the restaurant, Picante, and very much appreciated the convenience of having a good restaurant right at the resort. The food was delicious and reasonably priced. They had an excellent children's menu -- the food served to kids was much better than in the US. We highly recommend Bahia Pez Vela.

For a first timer to Costa Rica, we ended up selecting what I consider the BEST location for a safe jumping off point to numerous local attractions. Bahia Pez Vela is close to Liberia Airport (about 45 min), and offered what was effectively a 'private' black sand beach (since there were few other vacationers around. It provides the comforts of a resort without the overpriced resort crush. Examples, a local oufitter delivered sea kayaks right to the resort beach; we used the reception staff to book an adventure tour at a local volcano; the massage therapists are available on the beach regularly; the Picante Restaurant staff were ultra-accommodating and helped me practice my Spanish; the kids played in the pool and on the beach with friends they met on site; the security into and on the resort was exceptional; we used Bahia Pez Vela as a starting point to beach-hop and restaurant hop in Playas de Coco, Conchal, Grande, etc - the list goes on. I've never returned to vacation in the same place twice, but I am strongly considering going back to BPV with friends or family !!
