I loved my recent stay at this wonderful home & property, finding it an oasis of comfort, beauty, and regeneration. It came as a bit of a surprise to realize that considering all the activities of my Hawaiian holiday, the most favourite & memorable times of my visit to Kauai were the hours spent contentedly savouring life at the retreat-like Red Ginger. It provides an atmosphere of relaxation, ease, & contentment, & was a welcome relief at times from the day's busy-ness. It seems to invite a peaceful, gentler, slower way of doing life. I returned home with many sweet memories of times at the Red Ginger spent enjoying a variety of simple pleasures- leisurely meals, good conversation & fine coffee on the outdoor lanai, being cooled by the ever present soft tropical breezes, & taking in the sounds & sights of the surrounding tropical jungle valley. Lovely too, was the nightly star-gazing, the deep, restful sleeps in the comfy bed, the lush greens & rich textures & colours of the tropical gardens, the outdoor shower & the many opportunities for photography. Simply sublime! The location, (handy for many activities straight out of the Kauai guidebook), was only a quick drive from many area beaches, the restaurants & shops of nearby Hanalei, the Kalalau trail & NaPali Coast, etc. (don't miss the takeout burritos from Red Hot Mama's just down the road) The home's location made for a good base from which to venture further afield and explore other areas of the island (the galleries of Hanapepe, Lihue, & the busier more developed South Shore attractions/Poipu, etc.) Couldn't have been happier & left feeling renewed & refreshed - highly recommend! Thanks for sharing your beautiful home!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Down the end of a quiet 1/2 mile residential road is Dawn's peaceful, charming home! We hoped for a remote quiet space with easy access to various north shore beaches and restaurants, and thats exactly what we got. The space was clean, functional, and provided just about everything we would want, including the ability to do laundry, and beyond, the lovely sounds of morning rain from a bedroom high above the forest floor with breathtaking views, tropical birds, and just outside, a pair of friendly cats waiting for our emergence each morning. Of our 11 days, we spent 9 in the main unit, Red Ginger, and, due to having booked out trip after others had spoken for Red Ginger later in our trip, 2 in the smaller cottage space beneath. Both were lovely, and equally outfitted, though the views from Red Ginger were more spectacular. Dawn as well was available as needed, but always discreet, and always helpful in making our stay as wonderful as she could. Though not on the beach, these accommodations offer something a beachfront property could not, that we really wanted. The quiet of a remote retreat, high on a hillside, with gorgeous views, and deep jungle sounds, and lots of privacy, without losing easy access to Hanalei and environs. Add to that the fabulous oversize outdoor shower, and we were very happy! A true Zen retreat! The magnificent Kuan Yin sculpture was a great clue! - )Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway.

The highlight of our trip to Kauai was our one week stay at Red Ginger Hale. It is a beautiful property which is accurately depicted in the listing. The owner was gracious, helpful with our questions and provided interesting and useful general info about the area. We enjoyed walks, beautiful beaches, good food in nearby Hanalei and much more. It was all good. Would love to go back there again!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

My wife and I stayed in the Red Ginger because we loved the pictures and wanted to experience the North Shore of Kauai. My wife has allergies so we always wonder how she will make out when we travel to a new place. We were not disappointed on any level. I can say without hesitation that we were decidedly satisfied customers. No problem getting there, the owner guided us step by step with good contact. The home is fresh, clean and well designed with breezes from windows that are screened and can be opened with glass and wooden louvers. You are surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of countless types of jungle vegetation. You can walk to some of the the beaches but it is fast and easy with a car. Neither of us have ever been to Kauai before. Now we are hooked. We are happy to have found a place in USA such as this, easy for us to get to and yet not your run of the mill tourist trap. We were looking for adventure AND relaxation and we found it.. I think we both got our " groove" back..cheers to the Red GInger Hale in Hanalei..Highly recommend.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with young children, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Everyone that met this couple loved them. They actually already had a lot of groove. I hope they return, it would be our pleasure.

We REALLY enjoyed your " treehouse" Sitting on the lanai during the rain or waking to a rainbow just outside our window was extremely enjoyable. Or fav place to eat was the dolphin ( their fish tacos are to die for) but having our own little Hawiian BBQ downstairs was also fun and tasty. The most amazing hike we have ever been on was the Kalalau trail. LONG Day but TOTALLY worth it! The St Regis brunch is delicious ( especially when you add passion fruit or guava mimosas) and has the best view for any meal. We loved playing with your kitties and loved discovering wildlife here. Swimming with the turtles " so totally rocks " ( as Crush would say) Thanks and aloha..Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

I came to the Red Ginger for a personal retreat and it was absolutely amazing. I was surprised that the weather was still so nice in late December. The place was very inviting, classy, and clean. It was surrounded by the most breathtaking jungle/mountain view I have ever seen. I felt like I was in another world. The owner was very attentive to my needs and I was provided helpful information about where to go and what to do on the island. I felt so comfy in the place that it was difficult for me to leave. Thanks Red Ginger. I'll be back.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Let me preface this extremely negative review of the Red Ginger Hale by saying: If you do not care about ants & mice, & are looking for an out-of-the-way, rainforest experience, then this is the place for you. If not, then I suggest you book a stay at some of the lovely resorts in Princeville. After reserving our stay 3 mths in advance; our brief overnight experience so soured our stay that we flew home immediately. While the owner claims our abrupt departure was due to my older mother’s discomfort with travel, nothing could be further from the truth. The place was dirty & ant-ridden – with mice droppings also clearly evident. We had a confirmed res. arriving Dec 9 - 16 (7 nights). Upon our arrival @ 5:50pm (check-in time started @ 4pm), there was no key in the lock box. With no cell-phone service in this remote area, we had to drive back to the town of Hanalei, taking what I would consider to be a washed-out road with huge pot holes, in order to get a signal to call the numbers on our confirmed reservation. The 1st # no longer belonged to the owner; the 2nd was no longer in service. The 3rd #, her daughter’s in another state, was good & the only saving grace. After explaining the situation, her daughter said she would contact her mother & call back, which she did – but only to report that she too was unable to reach her mother. Once she did reach her 1 1/2 hours later, she called to report her mother had been expecting us a day later (to her error & contrary to the res.), & would call us immediately. Again, no success; after trying to phone her at the new number for 35 minutes –19 attempts & only a busy signal – I gave up, suspecting the phone was left deliberately off the hook to buy time so the owner could make the place as presentable/clean as possible. The owner finally rang to say she was ready for us. By now we had invested almost 2 hours, just trying to check in to the place (timeline: 5:50pm- 7:40pm), with groceries in hand. Upon arrival we were fed up & tired. We were further annoyed because the excuses did not jive with what her daughter told us. The property is accurately represented on site;where it falls apart is on cleanliness, There was crusted food under DR table, ant traps everywhere, mouse droppings in 3 kitchen cupboards along with a mice trap under the sink. Because of this & what I considered to be an ant infestation (luggage crawling w ants), we could not stay. Before leaving we tried contacting the owner to show, no luckOwner response: These guests encountered health difficulties on their flight over that necessitated they return to Canada the next day.It must have been very disappointing and frustrating. I think the frustration just ran it's course though this strange and inappropriate review. USEFUL INFO: *There are travel insurances that reimburse flight & accommodations should you encounter unforeseen travel issues *Kauai is in the tropics so at times has more challenges with tiny nuisance beings than some other parts of the world. You will rarely encounter them in the home. You can entice them in if you leave food out. Myself and my cleaning staff will help with any issues you may encounter. We do not have anything large, poisonous or dangerous in Kauai. Ant and rodent catches are standardly seen as preventative measures in homes here. *We go over the home with guests upon arrival to assure all is well and will quickly assist if any issues are found.Myself and/or my caretaker are actually easily accessible by phone , email and text. * We supply guests with directions, lockbox & phone #'s before their arrival and we await all arrivals. I now have a 'micro management' arrival plan in case of miscommunications, forgotten paperwork, uncharged cell's or jet lag confusion. *Many of our side streets are gravel and have potholes 'small kine' The streets are maintained by the county on 'Kauai Time' You won't need a 4x4 but you'll need to drive slowly at times. *We do have cell reception on the property. Verizon best, At&T not so. Wifi is provided & is accessible inside and out. We offer free long distance on the land line as well. *We make Kauai our home because we love the lay back aloha and kindness that is here. We love having visitors to share our aloha with. It makes us happy when visitors show us respect and aloha too. * It is good to understand the different areas of Kauai before choosing. * The Hanalei area ( and my home) are loved and well received by visitors who seek tranquility, uncongested beaches, adventure, lush natural beauty, rivers, quaint seaside life. * Princeville and Poipu are enjoyed by those seeking a manicured tourist/ resort development with condos, hotels, golf courses, swimming pools. pavement and parking lots. * You may encounter a tiny nuisance being in any accommodation on Kauai as all of Kauai is tropical

My wife and I stayed 10 days at the Red Ginger this past November. It was the perfect getaway after a busy couple of months. It was more than we expected. Dawn did an excellent job describing the place, giving us directions how to get there, and generally making our stay very comfortable. Her local knowledge was so helpful for finding hidden gems ( beaches, hiking trails, and local Luau) The Red Ginger suite was very clean, well appointed, quiet, and perfect for what we were looking for. Added bonuses are the use of coolers, beach chairs, beach mats, snorkelling gear and boogie boards. Pictures just don't do the place justice. The mountain views, rainbow filled mornings, flowers and overall lushness of the jungle can't be captured with just pictures. It is something that needs to be experienced to appreciate all that it has to offer. We hiked the first 5 miles of the Kalalau trail on the Na Pali coast, making our way to the first waterfall. We highly recommend this, it was absolutely breathtaking. Good running shoes or hiking boots are advised. The trail was rough in some spots. Sunsets at Ke'e beach were stunning, we made a point of going there almost every evening to watch them, being only a short 10 min drive from the place. An absolutely perfect honeymoon in a beautiful setting, we highly recommend this property and can't wait to go back. Thank you for such a wonderful honeymoon Dawn!!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: I have to say I really loved having Cody and Jena stay at the Red Ginger. They are two very cool people who suited the island way completely. They are a beautiful couple with rainbow hearts and I wish them every happiness in their future life as a couple.

We spent a wonderful relaxing week in this beautiful tropical setting. The house was very well looked after and suited us very well. The property is outside of town and you will need a car to get to the more tourist places but there is much to see and do within walking distance. The beach we walked to was beautiful and we saw birds and were able to swim. We enjoyed the walking trails and the gorgeous flowers and trees. We had no problems getting to the property and we found Dawn (the owner) easy to deal with and knowledgeable about the island.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: It was such a joy to see this mother and daughter duo enjoy the island so much. They have both traveled a lot and they fit into our island style world quickly and easily. It felt homey just having them around.. Two lovely women..

Thank you for a wonderful stay! The house is beautiful and we loved waking up to the sounds and the view of the jungle every day. Our kids loved the cats. We had so much fun exploring the north shore beaches. We almost chose an ocean front home to rent and were so glad we didn't, it was wonderful to come back to the Red Ginger everyday. Close to everything but it felt so private to be here. Thanks for welcoming us and for all the tips on what to see and do!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

What a wonderful and magical place! This house was the perfect home base for our honeymoon week on Kauai. Breezy and spacious with plenty of beach towels! Perfect distance to many fun beaches. We LOVE burritos and ate at the Red Hot Mamas at the end of the street 3 times for lunch. The kitties are the CUTEST and NICEST and it was wonderful to have them around, we sure do miss our kitties back in Ohio and it was great to have Paco and Jimi to pet. We really couldn't have asked for more. THANKS! P.S. It did not rain one time while we were here..it was gorgeous and SUNNY all day everyday..Honeymoon Miracle!Did you find this review helpful? Sometimes you fall in love with a place. It can be a large place such as a state and even down to a city or a building. Thank you so much for helping us find our place.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

When we arrived at 10pm it was extremely dark and hard to find...We were told by owner that the door would be unlocked for us and the grounds-keeper would be there to greet us. When we arrived, the door was locked, grounds-keeper was not home, and my cell had no battery. We were so tired and so upset by the situation; after waiting for 20 minutes in the dark, we decided to go find another place to spend the night and return in the morning. Next day we were let in by the grounds-keeper (very pleasant and apologetic) but when we called the owner, Dawn, to share what happened, she blamed us..."we should have read the contract where it provides us a combination to the lockbox on the door". I had communicated with Dawn VARIOUS times through calls and emails and NEVER did she state this, not to mention she instructed that the door would be unlocked and help would be there if need be. After going back and forth on the matter she finally offered $100 refund for having to spend the night somewhere else (which i finally received at the end of August after hounding her for the $100) The outdoor lanai is NOT part of the appartment. it's actually downstairs outside of the appartment and it was filthy!! The cushions were COVERED in cat hair and dust. The kitchen had tiny ants all over the counter...huge flying roach in the room...geckos on the walls(which i actually liked) and what drove us out 4 days early was a giant centipede in kitchen!! look up a Hawaiian centipede to see what this thing looks like...HUGE! My husband and I packed up our things and left! Dawn was not sympathetic at all, and would not refund any money because "i could have just captured it in a blanket and put it outside in the garden." We left and found a beautiful place right in Hanalei town for a little more money but so worth it. The Red Ginger house is also far from town (Hanalei) where the shops, bars, restaurants are and the long road leading up to it is a dirt raod filled with potholes. My advice...pay extra and stay right in Hanalei- such a cute town, and during the day you can drive to explore the rest of the amazing island.Owner response: To be very honest this review has me quite perplexed. Ann and her fiance did come to Kauai last year in May 2012. They stayed at my home for their island wedding for 9 nites and during their stay I received a glowing email from her about how happy she was, along with a beautiful wedding picture of them. She wrote me an email on May 27th during her stay and I have posted it above in the reviews. They arrived late the first nite and had forgotten to bring their paperwork with lockbox #. I was off island and was available by phone and email. My caretaker,Hopi, was on island and was also available, however Ann said they chose to just sleep in their car instead of contacting us that night. I did refund them for that nite because I felt bad that they had slept in their car.Thereafter, however, she expressed that everything had gone beautifully well. Hopi's sister is a hairdresser and she did Ann's hair for her wedding and assisted her with all her wedding details. I am not sure why Ann has choosen to write this negative report now 10 months later. It does not sound at all like the same Ann that stayed with us. I only hope all is well with her and her new husband. To help future guests with any confusion this review may have created, I can assure you that the Red Ginger is kept very clean and updated. We have wonderful guests from around the world who we love to take good care of. We are in the jungle tropics so we have to contend with more nuisance beings (geckos and insects, rodents ) than other climates do. Keeping the home clean and tidy during your stay does greatly eleviate the issue and you rarely encounter them inside the home. If you do we can help remedy it pronto.. Red Ginger has an enclosed indoor and an open outdoor lanai with BBQ. The outdoor lanai is more exposed to the elements so leaves can blow in (minimally). I am meticulous about making sure guests have the directions and lockbox # for keys well before arrival time. We are easy to reach by email and phone and try to be there when guests arrive even if it is late. Unforseen things can arise but I do all I can to make my guest's vacations go smoothly. We are 3 miles from Hanalei town, 2 mi from Na Pali coast and Kalalau trail, and 1/4 mi from main road, the grocery store hub and beach front. Our street is paved for 1/8 mi and then gravel for 1/8 mile. The county repairs it regularily but it does get potholes between repairs. You do not need a 4x4 to traveres it, just drive slowly.

The Red Ginger Hale is a hidden gem in the hills on the North Shore of the Island of Kauai. I honestly didn't know what to expect as the road turned from asphalt to dirt on the winding approach to Red Ginger Hale. We arrived in mid-afternoon during a lull in the showery weather that we had become accustomed to on the Island of Kauai. All around was tropical vegetation, the floral smell of the jungle, large vines climbing on the trees - so beautiful and peaceful. The owner, Dawn, had sent me a note with details on the location (driving directions) and specifics on how to get into the unit. The home is two levels, both rented out separately, with - in my opinion, the upper unit begin the one you want. That is where we stayed. I was truly impressed when we made our way up the short flight of stairs into the unit. It is beautifully decorated, full kitchen (ok, the stove was broken) but the best part of it all was the location, The grounds are immaculate, the beds very comfortable, and many reading nooks - especially the day bed. The unit itself is two bedrooms (both large), closets galore, dining bar, single bathroom, living room, dining room etc. etc. With nothing between you and the jungle except for hurricane shutters and screens (no glass in the windows) - the jungle sang us to sleep each night. The location is perfect, less than a half mile to the beaches of the north shore, with a great local eatery (Hot Mamma's), and General Store directly down the road! Stay here - you will not be disappointed. Local sights include the Hanalei Valley, Tunnels Beach (best snorkeling ever), and the NaPali Coastal Trail. The owner was great to deal with and was an outstanding host (even though we never met her personally).Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: I am so happy that Kevin and his family enjoyed their time here and mahalo nui loa for their beautifully written review.. The oven was on the blink a bit and you could only roast , not broil. I put a toaster/ convection oven in until I could get a new computor chip installed. The digial ovens are a bit of a bane over here with the moisture. It's an easy fix though.. and don't worry about the dirt road , it's gravel and goes for only for about an 1/8 th of a mile. You won't need a 4x4 , unless you want one. As far as the windows go, just to clarify, the windows are a combination of glass, glass louvres that can be opened and wooden louvers that can be opened. All of the windows that can be opened are well screened. The majority of the windows can be opened to allow for optimal trade wind flow. The master bedroom has large glass scenic windows that look out over the valley with screened wooden louvers situated just below the glass. They can be opened to let the air flow through and keep the bedroom cool .. aloha

A fabulous piece of paradise, and Dawn is a warm and caring owner. We had our son, daughter in law and 19 month old grandson with us. The house is beautiful and baby friendly, the beaches are fabulous and Hanalei is a magical place. We hope to be back next year. Dawn was a great help on where to go and what to do. The grounds on the property offered a place to relax and listen to the many birds. We enjoyed a fabulous Luau just minutes away. We loved the trade winds blowing a beautiful breeze through the house. We stayed at the Hyatt Kauai on the South Shore for the first part of the stay, but our experience at Red Ginger/Song of the Jungle retreat was by far the best part of our visit on the island. The home was clean and inviting. The owner was very cordial and responsive as well. There was everything provided for the beach as well as pointers on hiking, etc. Hanalei town was just a short drive away and has such character...a must see. We are very clean people and can't believe the "fluke" reviews that have been made recently since our stay was in the first part of March 2011. Every accomodation was made, even in the tsunami scare that we experienced. The rental owner provided an abundance of food and water in the event of a natural disaster, as well as kept us consantly informed on a local level. We wouldn't hesitate to reccommend this property to anyone and wouldn't think twice about calling the owner again on our next visit to Kauai.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, people with disabilities, age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

We stayed at three different houses while we were on Kauai and we loved this one the best. It is off the beaten path but close to Hanalei town. The pictures do not do this property justice!!! You are completely surrounded by lush, beautiful plants. There is tons of rad bamboo and wild native plants. We awoke every morning to rain and watching the sunshine on the green mountains all around us, NOT to roosters like everywhere else we stayed. It has a beautiful open floor plan. The master bed was SO comfy, clean and large. We have a 16 month old daughter and it was safe and clean for her also. Thank you soooo much Dawn, we had an amazing time.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, families with young children, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Close enough to town to "run a quick errand", but far enough from everything to wake up only to the sound of bird calls, soft rain or crickets. No traffic noises, no other noises at all. The cottage is beautiful, clean and peaceful inside, we especially loved the massage chair, what a great way to unwind! And the view, especially in the main bedroom is quite amazing. It was so nice to get up and cook breakfast in the full kitchen, with everything provided but the food, and then go have breakfast on the lanai. Couldn't ask for a more peaceful spot to relax after a day of exploring the island. Highly recommend this place!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

I had an absolutely wonderful time! Your beautiful home was more beautiful than I had hoped it would be and you made my stay very easy and pleasant. It was great having the cats around too, they really added to the charm. The breezes and the rain at night give your special corner of the world the perfect measure of mystery and soul. I was just settling in and now I have to go! Such is life. But I will be back! I can't wait! Mahalo John Kane ( entered from house quest book 10/2/ 09)..Did you find this review helpful? We had a great time in your jungle paradise!!.. How peaceful and serene it was...No one could ask for a more comfortable and beautiful spot. We have some great memories.. saw a monk seal.a bright green camelion...The botanical Garden was a real treat..so interesting..so many fascinating plants and trees. Beaches , hiking and great food ( Blue dolphin, Mediteranean and Post Cards) The helicopter ride too!! A really memorable birthday for both of us! Thank you ..mahalo Paula and Vince from Auburn, Ca.. We loved our time here- Kauai is now our favorite Hawaiian Isalnd, and the North Shore our favorite part. This cottage is fantastic- can't beat the view! Many thanks to Dawn for being such a wonderful hostess and really making us feel at home. Our highlights: snorkeling at Tunnels, hiking the Na Pali Trail, and swimming under a waterfall, bodysurfing at Secret Beach..we also enjoyed ziplining on the East Side" Just Live" We will most definately be back!
