Why the Owner Chose Lexington

My husband had a good friend who grew up in Port Huron and he spent a lot of time there during the summers. We love the fact that it's not too far of a drive for us, yet we feel so far away from it all. Lexington has plenty to offer, yet it's not as touristy as some vacation spots in Michigan.

The Unique Benefits of this Cottage

Our favorite thing is the gorgeous view ... whether we're sitting on the beach, the deck or at the bistro table inside in front of the picture window, we always feel so fortunate to be surrounded by such natural beauty! We especially love checking out the freighters that meander by and the sailboats during the Port Huron to Mackinaw race.

Nice cottage but not toddler friendly

Date of Stay: 08/29/11 Review Submitted: 09/05/11

We just got back from a week long vacation at this cottage. Overall, it was a lovely place and well equipped. The bathrooms were clean with plenty of towels and the kitchen had plenty of pots and pans etc. We were 5 adults and 4 children (aged 10, 8, 2, and 16 mths). The property wasn't really ideal for toddlers as there is a steep bluff at the edgo of the lake which isn't fenced. The fire pit is also right on the edge and we were worried that even the older kids might fall off the edge when we had a fire at night. None of the outlets had covers, so I would suggest bringing your own. There are a LOT of nick-nacks and ephemera around at totddler level which was a challenge with the 16 mth. He had to be watched like a hawk the entire time, which was very tiring. There were no toddler/baby-safe rooms or spaces. One of the main irritations was the amount of seating. The property will sleep 11, however the dining room table only seats 6 and there are no extra dining chairs. Even with our party of 9, some had to stand to eat. There is a tall, 2 seat table near the front window, but this isn't ideal if you're having a family reunion (we were). Outside, the deck is a similar story. The main table seats 6, so half our party would sit on the deck chairs. There are plenty of deck chairs, which is really nice. The beach is handy as it is right down some stairs at the end of the property, however it is extremely rocky and very, very shallow. Even when you are 200 ft out in the lake it is still only thigh-deep. We ended up swimming at the nearby State Park. What is nice about the private beach is that we were able to leave our beach toys and chairs there, which was great. Definitely take some crocs or water shoes! The only BBQ is a charcoal kettle-style one, not a gas/propane one. This was a bit irritating as we had to wait a while before it was ready. We're also out of practice using them! Be aware that you'll need to buy briquettes and lighter fluid if you want to use it (plus allow time for it to heat up). The owners seemed very helpful and nice and rang to apologize for the staining on the carpet (the last guests had left it stained) and offered to have it cleaned while we were there (not so convenient). She was also helpful when I asked about peanuts/nuts in the area as our son has a severe allergy. It was a charming location and nice place, however the seating is a big issue for dining. I would recommend it with these caveats.

Owner response:I'm so sorry our place did not meet the expectations of this renter as far as being toddler-friendly. We did not receive questions regarding this concern in advance of their stay and we would have honestly responded that it is definitely not prepped for little ones. The only question I received was whether there was a sandy beach for the children to play, which there is. I also replied that the water is rocky and shallow. As for seating, we have never had a comment in this regard but will definitely consider making a couple of extra dining room chairs available, which we can store in our basement. We apprecaite any comments that can help us make our renters' stay as pleasant and comfortable as possible.
