We Love Oakhill Cottage! (virginia)

There just isn't enough space for comments for this amazingly special vacation cottage. Helen's Oakhill Cottage is truly your home away from home! So many others advertise this saying and some are true and others are far from it. Helene the owner goes way past your minimal expectations of making the reservations easy, allowing a very gracious check in check out policy. You may check in and check out early and late whenever you want for the most part pending of course other guests comin in or leaving. This always comes in handy for my husband and I who are going on thirty years of marriage and with the busy schedule of todays society tend always to ring up last minutefor the MUCH needed romantic get away especially our anniversary. We Have stayed at Helene's cottage multiple times over the past 6 years and never been disappointed. The comfortable beds, sofas and feels llike home decor is priceless. You have games,, movies, books, magazines for all tastes and ages. A real woodburning large fireplace adds that extra warmth and romantic touch to the end of a cool mountain fall or winter evening. The celing fan and lights dimming control switch in the rooms is one of my many favorite touches to this delightful property. All the other reviews here have stated the acces to the Woods Resort and other activities. I just wanted to put in a long awaited review on How grateul we are to you Helene for the many memories that Joe and I have shared and the continuing romance we have rekindled over the years thanks to your over the top hospitality and the precious gem we call OUR home away from home!

4th of July weekend review

Guest: Melissa (Woodbridge, VA)
Date of Stay: 06/30/11 Review Submitted: 07/06/11

My husband and I (and our dog) stayed at this lovely cottage over the 4th of July weekend 2011. The house was lovely, with comfortable furniture (including the bed!), a screened-in porch, and a nice deck overlooking the woods. The kitchen was fully stocked with dishes and utensils, and there was a gas grill on the back porch for outdoor cooking. The satellite TV had excellent coverage, and the wireless internet was fully functional. The air conditioning and ceiling fans provided a comfortable environment over the muggy and hot weekend. While there are other houses very nearby, the cabin was isolated enough that we could sit on the deck without having to see any other neighbors. And there were plenty of roads for walking our dog in the mornings and evenings. The house was close enough to Berkeley Springs that we were able to enjoy the spas in that town, and we were close enough to the outlet mall in Hagerstown, MD that we could spend an afternoon shopping. We were 2 hours away from Gettysburg and were able to spend an afternoon there at the Civil War battle reenactment. Overall, this was a wonderful weekend, and the cottage was beautiful. Everything was top-notch, and we would definitely stay at this location again. Thank you Helene!

Quiet, Restful, Relaxing Stay! Great escape from Baltimore/DC chaos!

My wife and I and our 2 miniature doxies stayed her in June 2011 and loved the cottage and surrounding area so much, we came back and stayed another week in July! As they say, "the silence was deafening!" We hadn't realized just how noisy and chaotic our lives had gotten to be until we visited Oak Hill Cottage. No cars racing by or car alarms going off. No airplanes flying overhead. Wonderful! The silence was broken only by a large woodpecker that was working nearby one morning. This was not a nuisance but rather an awe-inspiring experience of nature. Lots of deer passing thru the property and nearby area, -but most notable was the opportunity to see several very young fawns. We frightened one so much it just folded it's spindly little legs and sat down in the middle of the road! Such scenes are seldom seen by most of us. The owner, Helene, was very pleasant and helpful to work with. She has tastefully decorated her cottage and along with others we also were amazed at how well equipped the kitchen was. Her cottage is nicer than most and includes a 2nd full bath AND a good size laundry room that most models like hers do not have. We thoroughly enjoyed the recreational amenities she made available via her guest passes to The Woods Resort facilities. We used the outdoor pool (lap lane and 8' deep section) and tennis courts, the indoor court, and fitness center. There is also an indoor pool (3-1/2' max) and hot tub that we did not use. We discovered muscles we didn't know we had after taking very invigorating walks along the hilly roads near the cottage. Overall both stays were so wonderful that we decided to dump our non-pet friendly timeshare and come back to the Hedgesville area again!

We have had a hugely relaxing stay here. With 3 generations in our party there has been plenty for all to do. The cottage is extremely comfortable and peaceful - we all managed to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet. We will definitely be back to enjoy the spa experience again. Thanks from us all.

What a wonderful house. It was like a home away from home for us. We wish we could stay longer and get to know West Virginia better. We loved sitting on your porches in the middle of a forest. The massage therapist at the spa revived us.

Wonderful Stay

My husband, our two dogs and I stayed at Oakhill Cottage for one week this summer. It was home away from home. The kitchen had every appliance, gadget and dish I could think of; the beds were comfortable, we had many places to lounge - living room, covered, screened porch, deck. There are lights in the porch for romantic dinners after dark, the TV worked perfectly; the visit was completely hassle-free and very relaxing. We enjoyed dinners out in Shepherdstown (Yellow Brick Bank) and lunches in Berkeley Springs (Tari's Cafe). Someone told me that the China Kitchen and Kazu Thi in Shepherdstown were also good, but we didn't get a chance to sample them. Also, there's live theater in Shephedstown run by the college there, but we also had to pass that up We did get to the arts/crafts coop in Berkeley Springs with local crafts that featured artwork of dogs that week - perfect. And the Food Lion in Hedgesville is fantastic - better stocked than my local Giant. We loved our stay and were sorry when it came to an end.

We were only going to stay about two weeks until our house closed. Two months later we are leaving with fond memories of our stay at Oakhill Cottage. The pool was quite a bonus (indoor and out). The kitchen is very nicely equipped and served all our needs. We were so blessed to be able to set up housekeeping immediately and not lose two months of homeschooling our girls!

Four of us stayed here for three nights and had a great time. What a great house! We got to play tennis, swim, folf, hike and had a great whietwater tube trip down the Potomac. Our dog, Jasmine loved it here.

Such a cozy comfortable house! The red buds were exploding. We saw lots of deer wild turkey and a huge pilated woodpecker. A great stay.

Quiet Contentment

This house nestled in the quiet woods yet still quite walkable to the amenities of the Woods Restort, made for a relaxing get away weekend! My favorite spot was the screened in porch, a nice place to rest, read, or play games, It was especially fun to have the festive lights on. The wonderful deck with the huge loungers was another popular spot in our family. The interior was very roomy wiith a huge table for us to eat our meals, which we made in the well supplied kitchen. WE all slept so well in the comfortable beds. Lots of wildlife about.. we saw turkeys, deer, squirrels and many birds. We'd like to return in the cold weather and use the huge fireplace! There are lots of nice hikes in the area and the golf course was great! We also went over to Berkely Springs one day. A wonderful place to stay.. We will be back!
