Deal Island Wildlife Management Area info:
"One if by land". Features over nine (9) miles of trail to walk, hike, bike and even camp-on & through. And, over seven (7) miles of scenic roadway to travel along with 6 parking areas to access to take in the views whether by naked eye or with binoculars or the like.
"Two if by sea". There are 6 public boat ramps to launch from. So spend some time exploring the impoundment area of the WMA, then the Manokin River side, the Wicomico River side and/or the surrounding Tangier Sound region of the Chesapeake Bay itself.
The Town-The "Damned Quarters"
Today’s Dames Quarter was originally named the "Damned Quarter". A loosely formed settlement founded by pirates of the Bay. Back in the 1600s, the only way to reach what is now modern day Dames Quarter was by boat. Pirates would pillage merchant ships off of Deal Island. Then retreat back in to the "Damned Quarters" through a series of "guts" that only they knew how to navigate.
The Street
Riley Roberts is the Rd that leads to the main entrance of the Wildlife Management Area. From Deal Island Rd, the first 2 miles of it is a historic settlement of eclectic old waterman homes in various stages of age & remodel along with the since retired old Deal Island School & a classic Bay clapboard church. All of this intertwined with the tall soft Pines that dominate this region of the Eastern Shore. We're 1.5 miles in & just prior to the open water vistas of the WMA.
