Pender Islands cabin description
Relax and get reinvigorated at this enchanting oceanfront eco-cottage with dock and moorage. Excellent crabbing, kayaking, hiking, whale watching (Orcas) and birdwatching. Restaurants, wine store, bakery, etc. nearby. Surrounded by everything a nature lover and adventurer could hope for, the surroundings are resplendent with a vast and lush beauty. Your privacy is assured as the cabin is the only home on this 3.5 acre property which you will have to yourself. But don't imagine it. Come can enjoy it!
Kayaking in the Gulf Islands : KINGFISHER COVE IS IDEALLY LOCATED FOR KAYAKING AND WHALEWATCHING AS WELL AS BIRDWATCHING, SAILING, BOATING AND MORE. During mid March the hummingbirds arrive from Mexico and entertain their worshiping audience with their skydiving talents as they soar in less than seconds to the top of the giant Douglas fir trees and dive even faster down to sea level, another 50 feet below the deck off the main level of the cottage. Faster than you can blink, they are back at the feeder with their beak inserted, drinking the treats we have left for them. Who wants to watch TV when this show is available? Rent a kayak nearby or bring one with you, leave it on the dock and paddle whenever you wish to many locations including out into Boundary Pass, only 20 minutes paddling from the dock, to the location where the Orca are most frequently sighted. Or, take a guided tour with someone who knows the local waters. Canoes are also available for rent nearby or bring one with you from Vancouver, Victoria, or from Sidney.
SKYWATCHING FROM KINGFISHER COVE: The night skies from the decks are amazing -- meteorites showers, brilliant constellations, and very little light contamination. Astronomers have sought us out, specifically for the quality of our night sky.
Crabbing off the Dock! : Catch fresh crab off the dock. Oysters also available nearby or go fishing in the waters just outside the harbour for salmon, etc.
The fish boats also sell fresh fish at Hope Bay on North Pender Island.
There is an excellent farmer's market on Saturdays, so you can add the best of island produce to your menu planning for meals on the deck over the sea.

Fun getaway with the family - deers, crabs, prawns
Fun getaway with the family - deers, crabs, prawns
We luckily managed to get a last minute offseason booking for kingfisher cove. We took the ferry over from Vancouver and located the property very easily. I took my trailered 12 tin boat along with me for the journey. The owner was at the cabin to greet us and gave us a quick orientation, before he left. The cabin was stocked with everything - bedding, cooking utensils, towels etc.. All you need is cloths and a camera. You can get food at the grocery store which had everything except wagon wheels. There was some firewood chopped for the wood shove and we had fun chopping more. (surprised with the huge size of the axe the owners had left for us). The weather turned out to be perfect for this time of year (sunny in November). Because of the cabin was located right at the end of the road we had complete privacy with the trail leading to Mount Norman right at the property line. We launched the boat at the Spit around 1 minute away and then docked it at the private dock in front of the cabin. Since the cove itself was so nice and secluded we did not spend much time out in the boat. The area under the dock was infested with monster rock crabs and all sorts of marine life. (there was a crab trap left on the dock by the owner) We also dropped a prawn trap in the water and it filled up with shiners and medium sized prawns which was a first because I never seen prawns in 8 feet of water. The cabin was clean when we arrived (I scanned the bathroom with a UV light and it was spotless). We visited some of the places on Pender island but had the most fun just hanging around the cabin and dock. Stayed there one week and never saw any other people (other than some passing boats). Got back to Vancouver and already want to go back to kingfisher cove. Had a great week.

Owner response: These guests were as lovely as they sound in their review.... they left everything in great order when they left and we really do hope they will book with us again.... and we are absolutely thrilled to know that they scored when they drop a prawn trap.... we have NEVER tried assuming one needed 40 feet of water to fish for prawns! Of course, we agree entirely that Kingfisher Cove is very private and we absolutely love to go their ourselves as often as possible in the winter, fall, spring and summer, but in fact, the off season is our favourite time....there is nothing like watching the sea at the same time as you sit in front of a cozy fire. We are also delighted to hear that our housekeeper has met our high standard for cleanliness..... spotless, even after UV inspection!! I couldn't be more pleased. Thanks so much Partha and family.... and please do book again! I must add, that for some reason, there are fewer starfish around and maybe that has contributed to the haul of Rock Crab and perhaps even to the presence of the prawns in more shallow water. Now, we just need to learn more about harvesting all those mussels that grow on the dock. And, we already enjoy the oysters at certain times of the year.... paradise, indeed!!! We take could care of our property because we really believe it is ours only for a relatively short period of time... we are stewards and all too soon the next generation takes over where we left off and it is so important that we protect nature as much as possible! It is a place where one can enjoy their share of the bounty and hopefully leave behind only footprints.

Back to Kingfisher Cove...Summer Impressions
Having stayed at the beautiful Kingfisher Cove about 10 years ago in Winter, I was looking forward to experiencing its beauty in Summer. Verdict: stunning in both. Still relaxing, very private, unique furnishings and artwork and best of all, the crabs are still easily caught. Delicious! Thanks Nev and Mariette for sharing your piece of paradise with us.
