Quick Get-away

Date of Stay: 05/02/12 Review Submitted: 05/11/12

The Writer's Nest is a sweet little hide-away nestled in the hills above Evergreen. It's small, but very cozy with room enough for 2 to relax. The surrounding ares is serene and beautiful. The views from the balcony are breath taking. Michael, the owner, is very pleasant. He stopped by the evening we arrived just to say hi and welcome us to his rental. The whole experiance was easy and relaxed, from check-in to check-out and every second in between. If you go, you need to drive down into the little town center adn just wander around. There are some cute little shops, boutiques and a sweet shop with fudge to die for. Overall this was a wonderful few days away from the chaos of daily life and we will most definitely go back. Thanks Michael for a much needed retreat.

Just what the Doctor ordered!

Guest: Paul (Houston Texas)
Date of Stay: 01/31/12 Review Submitted: 02/07/12

Hello, My wife and I stayed at the Writers Nest (1/31/12 - 2/3/12) It was everything I expected it to be, the web site pics and info were on the money, it was clean and ready when we arrived. Michael was helpful and very pleasant to deal with in making the reservation. We had a morning visit from a red fox as we looked out the window while having breakfast, I had hopes of seeing snow fall while we were there (we are from Houston so we don't see snow very often) but we had to leave just hours before 3' of snow fell. The only problem we had was the air was so dry in Colorado it took the first 2 days to get used to it. Humidity in Houston is about 50% in winter. We went to Rocky Mountain National Park..WOW is all I can say about that. The writers Nest was a great place for my wife and I, watching the sun come up sitting on the deck with a hot coffee one morning and and laying in bed the next was worth the trip. Thank You Michael you have a great place, we will be back again. Paul and Joy

Just as good in January as July

My wife and I were in Denver for the Stock show, and decided to stay at the Writer's Nest. We had been there before in the summer, and decided to give it a try in January. Once again, we were very pleased with our stay. Michael goes the extra mile to make you feel welcome, and makes sure you have everything needed for an enjoyable stay. We also love the secluded area and the town of Evergreen. The Writer's Nest will again be one of our future destinations.

A Mountain Getaway and gateway to the Rockies

Guest: Gnome (Toronto)
Date of Stay: 12/24/11 Review Submitted: 12/30/11

My partner and I don't celebrate Christmas so it was a perfect find to be away from urbanity and the near ubiquitous presence of the post-Christian/capitalist holiday Dec has devolved into. Arriving by air in Denver, we were able to grab food at the Whole Foods in Lakewood on our way to Evergreen. Michael was super gracious and arranged to meet us in the outskirts of Evergreen (despite being booked for dinner in Denver) so that he can guide us up the twists and turns that took us to our 'nesty' winter cottage, where we literally holed up for two days. Big tip #1: Try to arrive earlier than 4pm (when the sun begins to set) so that you can avoid arriving in darkness. If not, ask for a rendez-vous as you may get lost otherwise as a first-timer. Getting a 4WD a must. Tip #2: If you are coming during the holiday (or anytime when stores will be closed the next day after arrival), make sure you pick up all that you need from your chosen grocer. The fridge is not full-size so you might want to focus on things you can make that needs minimal refrigeration rather than pick up tonnes of things than will go bad) Tip #3: bring binoculars (we forgot ours) as you will see deer and birds left right and center. Falcon Mountain Park nearby off Hwy 74 is a gem for hikers in all seasons and a quick drive from downtown Evergreen. Snow-shoes will help you enjoy off-path trekking in winter. Michael owns a colony of homes of various sizes but the best view (for two) can be had at the Writer's Nest, which has two decks that overlook a valley of evergreen and mountains everywhere in view. And the sunrise is incredible...don't draw the curtains and just let yourself take in the light. Michael's office is above but he wasn't around at all and the place very much ours. Neighbors were away from view and were inaudible. In fact, coming from downtown city living, the quiet and lack of traffic din was a shock at first. This is a true getaway. Try to unplug from the world and don't spend your time only on the internet. It would waste the opportunity and you will miss out on the natural wonders of pristine nature! From Evergreen, there is a wonderful trip you can take to Mount Evans, which will take you by road (when it is not closed due to inclement weather) to it's peak at 14,000 ft above sea level. Even if you can't climb Mt. Evans, the way to it is spectacular and if you are heading further into the mountains, this will lead you to the I-70 at Idaho Springs and from there, a

The best Colorado Mountain Vacation we ever took!

Date of Stay: 08/26/11 Review Submitted: 09/08/11

My wife and I stayed at this cabin for our anniversary last month (August 2011) and it was a very pleasant and fun experience! The cabin was very nice from the inside and outside and when we arrived we found it very, very clean. Michael made sure everything was provided. That is, everything but groceries, as mentioned in the cabin details. The drive to get there was very scenic and beautiful. We are already making plans to try out some of the other cabins, perhaps next summer and take our family and friends with us.

Date of Stay: 08/22/11 Review Submitted: 08/24/11

My husband and I found the Writer's Nest by doing our own search for a nice getaway not too far from Denver. We saw that the reviews were all pretty good and we were not disappointed upon our arrival and stay at this cabin. I do like the fact that it is not too rustic or completely isolated, being a city girl, but at the same time, it is quiet and designed for 2 people to just relax and enjoy one another. Thank you Michael for providing this darling cabin for people like us. We do hope to come again.

AWSOME...WELL WORTH IT...YOU WON'T REGRET IT!!

Guest: Jeff (Cedar Park, Texas)
Date of Stay: 07/17/11 Review Submitted: 07/20/11

My wife and I wanted a few days away to spend with each where we could have quality time together away from work and stress. The Writers Nest was what we were looking for! When we arrived we were greated by a VERY NICE 13pt Buck who was VERY friendly, allowing us to get within 5ft of him...PRETTY COOL! We settled in and met with our host Michael. He answered every question we had and provided all the info on the area. He was VERY HELPFULL, offering to go beyond what was expected. The Writers Nest provides everything needed for your stay, along with some creatures of comfort maybe not expected in a remote/secluded cabin. All that is needed is groceries. There's a full kitchen and a gas grill to cook out with (which we used). We are from TEXAS where the temp was in the 100's so it was VERY nice to sleep with the windows open and be comfortable (evenings in mid 50's) The last mile or so to the Writers Nest is a dirt road that becomes VERY steep. If needing to rent a vehicle, a suggestion is an SUV, that would be a wise choice during the summer months and a 4X4 SUV during the winter months. One of our favorite times during our stay, was sitting on a bench on the property, that provides a GREAT view and seclusion, where we had a favorite beverage and visited. The last morning we were greated by another VERY NICE buck who wanted to say goodby. On our way down the mountain, we needed to stop to allow a fox to cross the road, another COOL siting. If your OK with staying at a place off the beating path, secluded from the hussle & bussle, being one with nature, with all the amenaties as a chain hotel, a VERY informative/helpfull/nice host, and all at a reasonable price...the the Writers Nest is DEFINATLY what your looking for!

Owner response:Just a short note of clarification. Our guests need not rent or bring with them an All Wheel Drive Vehicle in the Summer months. We only recommend an All Wheel Drive Vehicle for the Winter Months when snow storms make it difficult to go up and down hills anywhere in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. The roads to our Vacation homes are well maintained by public County Road Maint Crews and the hills are not a problem for a regular car in the summer months. Please call us any time if you have questions. Sincerely Michael 303-946-0726

Our 7 day stay in the "Writers Nest" was exactly what we were looking for in our vacation getaway. It was very private, cozy, clean and the view off the balcony was wonderful. Michael's attention to detail made for a very relaxing stay. He made sure all of our needs were met, kept in contact with us about weather changes and even offered to drive us and pick us up from our dinner reservations when the weather got bad. Luckily we had a AWD vehicle and didn't need to take him up on his offer. He even came by to keep the snow off the satelite dish so we could continue to watch tv if we wanted to stay in. This was one of the best vacations we have ever had and it was made even better by staying at the Writers Nest. Thank you Michael for a great experience!!!

Weekend Get-A-Way

Guest: Troy & Nikki (Fort Collins, CO)
Date of Stay: 02/12/11 Review Submitted: 02/17/11

My wife and I stayed at the cabin over Valentine's Day weekend. The "nest" was very clean and cozy, with unobstructed views overlooking the forest. Michael was a great host, greeting us when we arrived and recommending good places to eat and snowshoe (which we enjoyed!). The only downside to the "nest" is that it is the lower level of the "Rockridge Cabin" which is used by the owners as their business office. The owners were above us the majority of our stay, which took away from the privacy we were hoping for. All in all it was a nice mountain retreat!

Owner response:As noted in our VRBO listing the Writers Nest is the completly seperate, fully equipped and self contained, private entrance lower level of our Rockridge Cabin. Our Lodging office is in the upper level. We never let the Writers Nest and the Upper level Rockridge Cabin to two seperate guest parties at the same time. Our visits to the Rockridge Cabin to check into our office during this valued guests visit were very brief lasting an hour at a time and the guests were not present during one of the visits. We do offer 8 other private family residential stand alone homes in Evergreen and encourage you to review these homes if the nature of the Writers Nest does not suit your vacation lodging total seclusion expectations. And please do read the many other reviews found here about the Writers Nest. We believe you will find the majority of our guests comments stand tall by themselves......Sincerely Michael

The Writer's Nest was exactly what we were looking for! It is in the best spot - up a winding mountain road, close to town, but placed on a quiet, wooded mountainside with wonderful views. We especially loved seeing the sun come up each morning, right from the bed. This cozy cabin had everything we needed for our stay. It is centrally located so we were able to visit family in the Denver and Colorado Springs area and drive up Mount Evans and spend a day in Estes Park. Michael recommended a nearby restaurant with old cabin charm and delicious food. This was the perfect place to stay and we plan to return!

Inspiring and Relaxing Writer's Get-A-Way

Guest: Suzy (Arvada, Colorado, Rockie Mountains)
Date of Stay: 09/17/10 Review Submitted: 01/27/11

As an aspiring Christian fiction writer and full-time secretary I am always looking for locations to run away too. The Writer's Nest was absolutely perfect. From the comfort of my bed, I awoke each morning to amazing sunrises over the forested mountains and fell asleep staring at the moon as it settled above the darkening shadows of the canyon each night. Our first morning I watched an Eagle gliding and diving from above our little "Nest" to out and over the forested canyon. Saturday evening we caught sight of a red fox chasing among the rocks at the bottom of the ravine. The peaceful sounds of breezes drifting through the pines and wild birds in the tree tops brought the peace and tranquility we so often seek in the hustle and bustle of city living. Naming this sweet, little, private retreat the "Writer's Nest" fits it perfect. As you relax on the small private deck above tree tops and boulder laden ravines you truly feel as though you are sitting in a nest. With a lovely Southwest motif from the decor down to the tablesettings, our "Nest" provided everything we could possibly need for a truly relaxing weekend. I also would like to credit the owners on their high standards of cleanliness and oranization. I can't wait to come back.

Lovely, Relaxing Weekend Away

My husband and I spent the weekend at the Writer's Nest and it was cozy, calm, and so relaxing. The bed was very comfortable and we loved how Michael had labeled things so we could figure things out and find our way around easily. Michael went above and beyond the call of duty in helping us with a dead car battery during our stay, and taking our late night call as we found our way to our little abode. The kitchen is small but well stalked with the important things that you need. We also loved being able to lie in the bed with the sliding glass door open and look out at the stars and the trees. Highly recommend and look forward to a return trip.

My husband and I stayed here while visiting Evergreen for a friend's wedding. We decided to stay alittle longer to celebrate our 15th Anniversary and found the Writer's Nest to be a perfect romantic getaway. It was cozy, private and very clean. The kitchenette was just the right size for vacation needs and was well equipped. While it was a little trek up the mountain road to get there, the view was well worth it. We will remember our time there fondly and will hope to return again someday.

Beautiful mountain home

Guest: Judy (River Forest, Il.)
Date of Stay: 08/01/10 Review Submitted: 08/14/10

We had a wonderful time at Michael's beautiful property. It was very well kept up with gorgeous views and everything we needed to make it "home" for almost a week. Michael was a gracious host and greeted us and answered any questons that we might have regarding the town and restaurants, etc. We did have a bit of a challenge getting our Honda Civic up there at night when it was more challenging to see and would recommend a 4 wheel drive vehicle or a van as the roads are unpaved as you ascend the mountain. If you want quiet, privacy and beauty with all of the amenties, this is your place!

Owner response:Please note; The roads to the Writers Nest are well maintained by the Road and Bridge Dept of Clear Creek County Colorado. Your 2 Wheel, or Front Wheel Dr. Vehicle is fully adequate to easily access the Writers Nest in non-winter months. A 4 Wheel Dr. Vehicle is only required on the day of a snow storm in winter and is generally required for all Colorado Rocky Mountain travel thru-out the Winter Months. We always appreciate our guests observations and believe the referenced comments left by our valued guests are primarily due to the rural nature of the community being quite different than an Urban setting with frequent street lights and well developed paved roads. We have never had a confirmed reservation guest who has not been able to access the Writers Nest. If you have further questions about this topic please call us anytime. Sincerely Michael

The Writers Nest is the perfect place to stay.

Guest: Julie (Alabama)
Date of Stay: 07/14/10 Review Submitted: 07/25/10

My husband, son, and I stayed at the Writers Nest for 5 perfect days. The cabin was clean, comfortable, spacious, and had everything you could wish for or might have forgotten to bring. The listing and photos were accurate as to location and appearance. However, it was all even better in person! My teenage son was delighted and surprised that his phone and the tv worked b/c it was a great, scenic drive up into the mountains, and he thought he was going to the end of the world. When we saw an elk grazing in a yard along the way, we were all absolutely thrilled with our journey! We especially enjoyed the extraordinary view of the mountains from the deck while the huge hummingbirds zoomed by; listening to the creek as we fell asleep; and Michael's hospitality and knowledge of the area. We visited many attractions, from Pike's Peak and Garden of the Gods to Red Rocks Amphitheatre to Boulder. We didn't have enough time to visit every attraction we were interested in. I most enjoyed going to Boulder, taking the railroad up the mountain to Pike's Peak and seeing 4 different climate zones on the way, going to Mt. Evans (recommended by Michael). Because The Writers Nest was in the best location, anywhere we went it was a beautiful, scenic drive. It was a wonderful place to come home to at night. Michael spent a lot of time and care in designing, furnishing, and decorating; everything you could want in a kitchen was there; the washer and dryer were wonderful to use; the bed was so comfortable--I don't sleep well away from my own bed but I slept very, very well. It was such a tranquil, beautiful, happy place and I most highly recommend it to anyone. There were 3 of us and we never felt crowded. My son enjoyed the tv, computer access, and his cell phone, and he also enthusiastically hiked down to the creek, and cooked his own fish on the gas grill. I was grateful he could experience and appreciate actually being in the mountains rather than looking at them from a distance. After he saw the elk in the nearby yard, he remained excited about his surroundings. My husband and I really, really enjoyed sitting outside. We were so far away from major light sources that we were able to see the night sky with the Milky Way and an occasional falling star. I could have sat there all night. Our first and second nights while waiting to watch the sunset we saw 2 double rainbows. Our visit was wonderful and Michael is a gracious, kind, knowledgeable, and helpful host.

We came out from utah to see family. When we saw the cabin on" VRBO" and how it was in our price range we had to jump on it. The owners were very nice. The directions to get to the cabin at the top of the mountain cabin were right on the button---. The only Problem was our first night there while visiting family I broke my ankle. My insurance company wouldn't pay for me to do my recovery there. Back to Utah with some great sunrises and sunsets pics from the top of the mountain cabin looking down at the valleys. Every thing inside the cabin was super clean and great.

We just left the Writer's Nest and it was the most wonderful overnight stay ever. Michael is so accommodating, as always, and the 'Nest' is absolutely perfect. The deck is high up in the trees and is perfect for bird and creature watching. A hummingbird visited us often and seemed to just float in the air. The deck was drenched in sunshine from the time we arrived until we reluctantly departed. The cottage is well appointed, beautifully decorated, and lovingly cared for. I highly recommend the Writer's Nest to anyone who wants to experience the mountains in a modern, natural, beautiful spot. We finished off the weekend with a visit to the lake in town where we rented a paddle boat, and then stopped to have brunch at the cafe overlooking the lake. Everything was just perfect!

The Writer's Nest was much more than we expected. It is beautifully situated so that both sun set and sun rise can be fully appreciated. The cozy kitchen was stocked with quality cookware and dishes. The rooms were clean and comfy. Peace and serenity describe the setting. Michael introduced himself to us with a warm personable welcome. The Writer's Nest is what a mountain paradise is all about. We would highly recommend it to anyone. If you are lucky enough to stay there, you are lucky enough!
