Location: Paris Arrondissement 18, Paris, Ile-de-France (Paris Area), France, Europe (Butte Montmartre Hill central prime location)
Accommodations: Apartment, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath (Sleeps 5-7)
Because of it's prime location and its very comfortable layout, I have rented this apartment very successfully over the years (see my numerous feedbacks). It's in impeccable condition, fully equipped and now available again for July-August only for up to 6 persons. The Butte Montmartre hill area is the most desirable in Paris for a vacation rental. It's currently outpassing St Germain des Pres and Le Marais because of the noise and pollution of these areas.
The building is a charming ancient renovated construction with an elevator.
Note : I have another 2 bedroom apt nearby, also listed here
The sunny days and clear blue skies of Summer is the best time to walk around Butte Montmartre hill and enjoy the breathtaking views over the city of Paris.
The street and the apartment are in a very quiet and safe neighborhood, yet 50 yards away from the famous Marche Lepic-Abbesses, the open air market, fine and casual restaurants, wine cellars, art galleries, vintage and all shopping and leisure facilities. The Place du Tertre - with its famous artists live exhibition - is minutes away, with the famous Sacre Coeur basilica, and all the charming and romantic cobblestone streets of the Montmartre Hill, that are now pedestrian-friendly since the Municipality has restricted car access to the area.
A car is not necessary nor recommended, but there is a safe parking around the block, if you plan to visit the outskirts of Paris. By Metro or by bus, Musee du Louvre and Orsay are less than 15 mns away.
The Roman “Mons Martyrium” - the mount of the first Christian martyrs - became Montmartre in 1689 when the monument was erected to the “glory of the Sacred Heart.” The famous cathedral that crowns the hill, and that can be seen from almost all over Paris, was built much later in 1871, when France was invaded, and the Pope captured. Since it’s Roman origins, Montmartre has always been a small village inside Paris, where winemakers and millers used donkeys to carry the grains and the grapes up and down the slopes of the hill.
The Moulin de la Galette is the last authentic windmill left from that time, with the famous Da Graziano Italian restaurant at it’s foot - a “must go” for fine dining out. It’s also a few hundred yards away from the Lapin Agile, the favorite place of the musician Eric Satie, which will lead you through the tiny cobblestone and undulating streets to the artistic side of the village.
Here, you will find "le Chateau des Brouillards” - the home of Renoir, "le Bateau Lavoir” - Picasso's studio and living quarters, the 12 rue Cortot - where Suzanne Valadon moved in 1896 with her son Maurice Utrillo, and many other famous artists and painters who captured the unique essence of the place and left their signatures.
Today, the Place du Tertre, near the Basilica of Sacre Coeur, is a place where you can watch painters creating their artwork on their easels, while you sit at one of the outdoor cafes, enjoying a nice meal or a glass of wine. Piano Bars are also flourishing around that animated place. The spirit of Montmartre is so unique, that it’s most famous artists decided to create the Republic of Montmartre, a non-profit organization that provides help to young artists and their children.
The last vineyard of Montmartre, still cultivated, is harvested on the first weekend of October, a time of festivities and celebrations all over the place. A village without a market place would not be a village, so, yes, Montmartre has its market place, spreading over the rue des Abbesses and the rue Lepic.
From the tiny terrace of the Caves de Montmartre (a highly recommended package store), you can enjoy the animation of the Lepic-Abbesses market place, while drinking your glass of wine on a barrel. Later, in the evening, there is a tiny “secret” bar in the back of the shop, with a genuine “atmosphere montmartroise,” where you can enjoy a plateau de fromages with your favorite wine. Just opposite is “La Pomponette,” a typical “brasserie” of Montmartre, where you will enjoy their oysters at the bar with the local celebrities.
Next to my building is the famous grocery store of Amelie Poulenc, probably the most visited grocery in the world, open from 9 AM to 11 PM. Thus, if you return home starving after a long day of touring around the city, it’s not a problem.
Some people ask me : "is Butte Montmartre near the center of Paris?" This is an embarrassing question, because it is actually one of the centers of Paris, with 6 million visitors per year.
