Santa Maria Novella apartment description
...Light pours through the skylights and open windows of this very lovely, small apartment in the center of Florence.
Situated on the top floor with a private security entrance, up three full flights, this apartment has been completely restored while preserving the beautiful Florentine high-beamed ceilings and tiles.
The apartment is on two levels, divided by an old stairway of Pietra Serena. On the first floor is the living room/kitchen and full bathroom with Jacuzzi tub. Located upstairs is the master bedroom, with a sitting area with a small bathroom. The apartment sleeps up to four as the living room sofa converts into a very comfortable queen size bed. There is also an option for a small roll-away bed and crib if needed.
The master bedroom is air-conditioned for summer months. We also have many fans, for summer days. The kitchen is fully equipped with all modern appliances such a a Bosch dishwasher, microwave and Braun coffee maker. There is an iron, hairdryer and a clothes washer and dryer, which is unique for Italian apartments. The whole apartment is beautifully furnished with handmade furniture made by one of the leading furniture craftsman of the Mugello, the Land of the Medici. Each piece is specially designed for this living space. The kitchen cabinets are made from beautiful chestnut wood, appointed with Pietra Serena, the stone of Florence. The kitchen tiles are Genovese marble. The floors are warm terra cotta, which mirrors the antique ceiling tiles and rustic beamed ceilings. The apartment is luminous with natural lighting, thanks to the skylights, which imparts a feeling of spaciousness. The apartment is filled with a feeling of old world Florentine charm while maintaining a practical comfort with modern amenities.
Located on Borgo Ognissanti, between Via Santa Lucia and Via Massa Fineguerra, you have just a short walk to the Florence train station of Santa Maria Novella and Sita bus station for your day trips to the historic hill towns. It is a block up to the Arno River, Cascine park (Tuesday market) and the famous bridges. It is a few blocks from Piazza Repubblica, Centro/Duomo and the state museums. This is a prime, typical Florentine location filled with great restaurants, small shops, bookstores, enotecas (wine), and fruit markets. The Teatro Communale, home to Zuben Meta's Maggio Musicale, is a five minute walk for opera and theater lovers. The famous Ognissanti church (the Jewel of Florence) is only a block away. There is a big parking garage nearby, if you come in by car. The street has easy access in and out of the city, which is a plus from the closed historical center.
To give you some background on the history of the neighborhood, this neighborhood was known throughout history as the neighborhood of the artisan as it continues to be today. When one wanders along this famous street, it is amazing to think how the past echoes the present, knowing that famous people lived here and walked this road. Two families stand out above all others, one being the painter Sandro Botticelli who was one of the most illustrious inhabitants of Borgo Ognissanti and the family of Vespucci, the famous explorer. The Church of Ognissanti, just up the street from the apartment, reminds us of the point of contact between the universal art of Botticelli, and the international fame of the Vespucci family.
Another bit of trivia about Borgo Ognissanti is that the once famous ancient Palazzo that now houses the Hotel Goldoni, on the corner of Borgo Ognissanti and Via Massa Fineguerra, was home to Wolfgang Amedeus Mozart when he visited Italy. This famous Hotel Goldoni, was already in existence in this ancient palazzo and it had the honor and the pleasure to be his hotel in Florence during his stay in 1770.
The apartment is available year round. There is a two day minimum stay. Longer stays than a month are available upon request at a reduced rate. I am also available as a consultant in getting around the city, where to go, sights, restaurants, great excursions, general questions and emergencies. I can also make reservations for state museums. Personalized service is included in the rent.

I can only echo all of the positive comments of previous reviews. This was a wonderful place to stay. The apartment was very comfortable. We loved the cafe next door as well as the market directly across the street. Our favorite restaurant (il Profeta) was just down the street. I highly recommend this place and would definitely stay here on a return trip. Grazie!

Decent place to stay in Firenze
Decent place to stay in Firenze
If you don't mind the stairs (no elevator) this is a nicely located apartment with plenty of little shops and restaurants on the same street. It's a few minutes walk from all the major sites. Busy street, but the apartment is quiet. However, if you're a night person, be aware that like all old buildings this one isn't well noise-insulated and the owner has signs advising you about the after 11:00 noise, including no toilet flushing, so as not to disturb the neighbors. It wasn't a problem for us. The washing machine nice to have and the dryer works although it does sound like a mini-cement mixer. The "CD player" listed in the listing is a very basic radio/CD player portable unit that is pretty temperamental. It did play the CDs that were in the cabinet drawer, but only after a bit of coaxing. Hint to Mary - a little better CD player would be nice, but it's not a big drawback. There is no TV in the apartment, but again, this didn't matter to us as Florence has enough sites (sights too) and sounds to keep us entertained. It would be nice to have one to catch the news, but the wifi takes care of that as long as you have a wife ready laptop or iPad with you. We wound up removing the bed cover. It felt mighty heavy and is not conducive to a restful sleep. Otherwise, the bed is comfortable enough. If you stay here be sure to try out the little wine shop a couple of blocks to the left as you exit the apartment. The owner is a native English speaker and she has a fellow in every couple of weeks to give talks on wine and the history and art of Florence. Well worth attending if that is on. All in all, yes, it's a recommendable place to stay. Clean, quiet, convenient.

My husband, 15 year old daughter, 12 year old daughter, and I stayed at this apartment in Florence for 3 nights. Mary and her husband, Fabio, met us and led us up the four flights to the apartment, which was quite charming and more spacious than the pictures on the internet showed. The downstairs kitchen/eating area/ foldout sofa was very clean with a full sized refrigerator that actually had ice! The upstairs bedroom was in the peak of the building and had its own air conditioning unit and a hobbit-sized door to a 1/2 bath just big enough to stand up in. Mary gave a good explanation of how to work most aspects of the apartment. The only surprise was realizing that we would have to turn off all appliances (including the air conditioner) to use the clothes dryer. Because of the extreme heat, we decided to just line dry our clothes. We had a lovely stay in this apartment and would recommend it to anyone who is capable of climbing the stairs.

Owner response: Thank you so much for your kind comments about your stay in the apartment in Florence. I appreciate you taking the time to write a lovely review of your stay. You are most welcome to come back anytime. It was a pleasure to meet you and your family and to be of service to help make your vacation in Florence, memorable. One thing I wanted to clarify for future guests is that, it is not necessary to turn off all the appliances to use the dryer, however thank you for being considerate in the use of the utilities. Thank you again. Mary Rose
My husband and I enjoyed our stay in Mary's apartment very much. It was very clean and charming - the descriptions and photos were accurate to what we experienced. The location is great and gave us a feeling of what it would be like to actually live in Florence. The street is very lively, even at night, but the bedroom was quiet. The only 'downside' is that there is no elevator. Top floor apartments are a plus, however, and worth the climb. (Apartment elevators in Europe are not always reliable and often do not go to the top anyway - so best to pack lightly!) Mary is very pleasant and helpful; she answered our emails promptly and encouraged us to contact her if we had any problems during our stay. We highly recommend her apartment and would stay here again.

My wife and I stayed at the Bellisimo Apartment for 3 weeks while we were studying Italian at the Michelangelo Institute. Fabio met us on our arrival and explained the apartment mechanics. It was spotless and everything worked well including a great WiFi and the heating system (we were there during an unusually cool spell in March, and needed the heater on occasion.) Mary dropped by as well and was very helpful to get us settled in. Although it was a 30 min walk to the school, we enjoyed the stroll, even during the rainy days we encountered. There is so much to see. All of the major Florentine sights are nearby and it was exciting to spend time in a real neighbourhood, gelato, restaurants, pastry (all the necessities for a vacation). My Italian cousins came to visit for a few days, but there was plenty of space even for four adults. We plan to return. Often!

Just what we wanted!
Just what we wanted!
My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights and found it was just perfect for us. We had not been to Florence before but easily got our bearings and were able to walk everywhere we wanted to go, including to the train station. The apt. was clean and spacious. We got our pastries and coffee from next door every morning for breakfast, and ate our dinners at a restaurant down the street (wish I could remember the name). The pizza across the street is also very good. We were given a good orientation to the apt. by the owners and felt we could have easily contacted them if we had a problem or question (which we didn't). Overall, a great place to stay to see old Florence. Would stay there again if we go back to Florence.

My husband and I stayed at Mary's apartment the last 2 weeks of September and had a wonderful time. We enjoyed the street the apartment was on with its handy market and fantastic pastry shops. We had everything we needed in the apartment including a large bathroom, pleasant kitchen, and comfortable bed. Having the train/bus station close by was great when we had some early morning out of town day trips. Wandering the small streets finding unique shops, eating at family restaurants, enjoying gelato, and exploring small churches was one of our favorite pass times. We walked and walked and walked and it was all fun. The food is the best, never a bad meal, but with all that walking we actually lost a few pounds. We hope we will get to return to Florence again. We recommend this apartment, so email Mary and go enjoy a beautiful city.

First time in Florence
First time in Florence
This was not our first time to Italy but to Florence and this apartment was lovely, charming, had all the amenities including a washer and dryer which is a treat in Italy. Well stocked kitchen and very centrally located. Walking distance to everything and a charming street with all sorts of resturants and shops for groceries, fruit, wine etc. It was nice to have the master air conditioned as it gets hot late summer/early fall. Mary's husband met us there and explained all the workings of the apartment. Thank you!

My husband and I had a wonderful stay at this apartment by SMN in Florence. Very comfortably furnished. Mary was easy to communicate with, especially considering we did not have a cell phone during our trip! We were regulars at the tiny coffee bar right next door - be sure to make a visit.

About the owner: Italy is a country full of glittering treasures and Florence is one of its brightest jewels. I am delighted to be able to offer a comfortable and beautiful ambiance to my guests. My husband and I choose to restore this apartment as if we were going to live there ourselves. It is important to us that what we offer ourselves we would offer others. Every amenity and comfort is well thought out and we make sure that the apartment is clean and in excellent condition at all times. I take pride in meeting the needs of my traveling friends while helping to make their stay in Florence a memorable one. As I am a teacher, I enjoy imparting my years of experience through giving suggestions on food, wine and day trips to other Italian cities close by. It is important to me to put the needs and comfort of my guests first and I am honored to say that this is gratefully reflected back to me through referrals and returning guests. My apartment is truly a 'home away from home'.
Why the Owner Chose Santa Maria Novella:
My husband and I chose to buy an apartment is this location because Florence is our home. We understand the historical and international significance of this remarkable gem of a city and feel a sense of pride and privilege to be able to share it with our family and friends.
The Unique Benefits at this Apartment:
My apartment is located in a very special neighborhood that is filled with historical significance. I especially enjoy visiting the difference sites, such as the Cascine Park on a Tuesday morning, where one finds the largest and most interesting market in all of Florence. There you will find anything your heart desires, plus the freshest of fruits and vegetables to take back to the apartment to prepare a sumptuous meal. Also, if you are a music lover, this neighborhood boasts of the Teatro Communale, which hosts Zuben Meta, yearly in Operas and concerts, plus ballet and symphonies. This Teatro is only a five-minute walk from the apartment. In addition, Borgo Ognissanti has some of the best and interesting shops, filled with eclectic items for all tastes. Next door is a wonderful home bakery and coffee bar that is a delight for your morning breakfast, as well as many convenient food and vegetable markets nearby. An important benefit of this area is its accessibility and ease to get in and out of the city while still being close into the historical center. As a traveler, this is beneficial and the location of the apartment meets this need.
