Home away from home

Guest: Ann R. (-)
Date of Stay: 12/26/11 Review Submitted: 01/05/12

This well appointed apartment sealed our great experience in Firenze. The location was perfect - we could walk to all the sights. After each good night's sleep we went over to the coffee bar next door for our daily treat of pastries and java. The market across the street had the fresh ingredients we needed for all our meals. The host's attention to detail and amenities provided in the apartment provided a very comfortable and hassle-free stay. We would recommend the Bellisimo Apt as "your home away from home." while visiting Firenze.

Your Ideal Italian base

Guest: Susan (Grand Rapids, Michigan)
Date of Stay: 10/02/11 Review Submitted: 11/20/11

You won't regret choosing this charming apartment for your base for your Italian vacation. It's location within two blocks of the train station and close to bus transportation means you may not even need a car. We traveled where we needed to go easily. The apartment itself is well appointed, with a large bedroom, main bath with jetted tub/shower, even a unique "night bath" upstairs off the bedroom. Washer and dryer is even supplied if needed. Since we stayed a month, we made use of it. Mary Rose and Fabio greeted us with all the information we needed for our stay, including helpful tips on local shopping and restaurants and "tourist info". When we had questions,or help was needed, they responded quickly and graciously. The four flights of stairs are a challenge, but you can consider it your "gellato tax". As two single women, we need both sleeping areas, and the sofa bed is not ideal for a long stay, needing to pull it out each night. However, both beds were comfortable. The apartment is complete, clean, convenient, and secure, if that is of a concern to someone. We certainly felt we lacked nothing. There are books, a radio/cd player, and Wi-Fi so we could keep in touch with family. Who needs TV when there is a beautiful city to explore!

A Perfect Month

Guest: Fred (Cleveland, Ohio USA)
Date of Stay: 09/01/11 Review Submitted: 10/18/11

My husband and I chose this property as our base to explore Tuscany. This was our third trip to Italy and we decided that we would not drive on this trip. The 5 minute walk to the bus or train station was perfect and we were able to visit every place on our list. The location is central to everything you need and just far enough removed to be out of the crowds. The apartment is spacious enough for two and filled with wonderful light, comfortable furniture and is very clean. My husband is an early riser and I like to sleep in, so the having the bedroom upstairs was great for us. It was also surprisingly quiet in the bedroom. Our 23 year old neice come to stay with us for 6 days, and though it's not a private room, she was perfectly happy on the comfortable pull-out sofa in the living room. However, I don't think this would be an ideal solution for a long term stay. The kitchen is fully equiped with everything you need to prepare all meals. The apartment is a 5 minute walk to the Central Market and we loved shopping there but there are three other markets even closer on the street and we used them to fill in as needed. It was unusually hot while we were there and the air conditioner in the bedroom made for perfect sleeping. The fans in the living area provided sufficient relief at the end of the day. We were happy to have a washer and dryer and made use of them every few days. There are plenty of towels and linens. The main bath is large and has a great shower and jacuzzi tub, and plenty of hot water. Having the half bath in the upstairs bedroom was great for the middle of the night and a morning shave. We did rearrange the furniture a little while we were there so we could fully open the dining table and not have to move it every day, and we put it back in order before we left. Mary Rose and Rocco were the perfect landlords, we only heard from them if we asked for assistance and when we did, they responded immediately. We are able to arrange lenghty stays of travel because we can work remotely, and a speedy wireless connection is a must. We found that here. Mary Rose also very graciously accepted and delivered overnight packages for us and helped us to arrange a meeting at the consulate when we need it. The only down side to this apartment is having to carry heavy luggage up the 5 flights of stairs. I guess that would not be an issue if we would learn to pack lighter! All in all, I'd say a party of two could not do better in Florence

The Perfect Apartment in Florence!!

Guest: Andrea (New Orleans, La)
Date of Stay: 07/01/11 Review Submitted: 10/03/11

Stop your search you have found the perfect apartment in Florence!! This summer I had the opportunity to live like a local and discover all that Florence has to offer. I rented Mary & Fabio’s beautifully appointed apartment on Borgo Ognisianti for 2 months. The apartment with it’s spaciousness & old world charm was conveniently located to everything, from the coffee shop downstairs, market across the street, train station 2 blocks away, and Florence at my doorstep. Florence and 84 Borgo Ognisanti are a perfect location to explore the entire Tuscan region. If you choose to rent a car and explore the region the parking garage is just next door with several car rental agency located on the same street. The train station is located just 2 blocks away with several fast trains daily to Rome, Venice, Milan and small villages in Tuscany. Spending 2 months allowed me to not only see the sites of the Renaissances’ greatest treasure, but to truly understand the culture of the region, meet new friends, stock up on stationary & leather goods and realize that Chianti Classico is my new preference for Red. Waiting for me as I arrived where Mary & Fabio ready to introduce me to the neighborhood and all of the information I would need to discover every nuance of the city. The Apartment has every amenity you could think of but what I appreciated most was Mary’s handpicked homemade travel bible. The reference guide quickly became my newest obsession! I found no rock unturned, from perfectly prepared spreadsheets on Local Markets, museum locations & hours, restaurant suggestions, wine tours, art history, culinary musts haves, walking tours, train schedules you name it, it was in the bible. Mary & Fabio have certainly poured their hearts into making sure their guests have everything they could possibly need to enjoy their vacation. Thank you for sharing your home and all of your wonderful ideas. I will return to my home away from home on Borgo Ognisianti and another long visit to see my new friends!! -Andrea Must Do's - Ristorante Parione on Via del Parione - Borgo Antico Piazza S. Spirito ( next door drinks @ Volume ) - Le Volpi e L'uva Piazza del Rossi ( My favorite spot for appetif!!) -Olio & Convivium on Via Santo Spirito 4r ( wine & dine) -Il Rifrullo via san Niccolo 55r ( wine & dine ) -Vivoli ,the Best Gelateria Via Isola delle Stinche 7 -Farmacia Santa Maria Novella ( a must see Via della Scalla 16 ) - The Straw Market! daily 9 - 5 has everything but straw..

I wanted to write a comment regarding the wonderful hospitality that we received by leasing the beautiful apt in Florence. Staying there was one of the highlights of our trip. The accommodations were homey and comfortable and a good location from which to set out on sightseeing walks. We loved being in the neighbourhood and hearing all the life around us in the neighbourhood. Your husband made us feel at home when we arrived. The book of helpful information was also lovely. We really enjoyed the Il latina restaurant that was recommended. Thanks again for arranging the reservations for us. The one day was very busy with the president speaking at the square and I am sure we would have had to wait a long time if we had not had the reservations ahead of time. Our vacation to Italy was one of the highlights of my life. We just loved the sights, the scenery, the art, the people and of course the food and wine. We look forward to returning one day! Thanks again, and we will be happy to recommend your apt. to friends who will be traveling your way.

From the moment we arrived, we felt very much at home. We were greeted at the door by Mary and Fabio. Both Mary and Fabio went above and beyond to help. The location was perfect and the apartment lacked nothing. This was a very specail trip for us, as we were celebrating our 25th. If I had to do it all over again, I wouldnt change a thing. Perfect place, location and hosts. "Just Do It "

We thoroughly enjoyed our five-day stay at the apartment & cannot say enough about the the owners. The property was spotless, chock-full of amenities, and exceeded our expectations in every way. Mary & Fabio have gone to great lengths to make the experience a pleasant one & it shows -- from the fully equipped kitchen to the books in the library to setting up museum reservations. The location is terrific -- many very, very good restaurants and shops are quite close, and the city-center is a five-minute walk. In short, this place is a gem. Highy, highly recommended!

A very charming Apartment

Guest: mark (united arab emirates)
Date of Stay: 11/15/10 Review Submitted: 11/29/10

We stayed at this apartment in November with 2 children aged just under 4 and 10 months. As we are a fairly active couple the three flights of stairs were no issue, even when taking our pusher (an easily collapsable) bug-a-boo and luggage (20 kilo +) cases. Aside from that, the apartment itself was lovely and a real joy for us to be enclosed with the company of each other. We loved having no TV as well. Mary and Fabio were of the utmost assistance and providing a contact phone was a security used once or twice. For our young family the sleeping arrangements of all being in the one room, a normality when we frequent hotels, was nothing unusual. We found this preferrable than using the sofa bed optional. The location was great, removed from the prime tourist area by only a short walk, but had the best bar next door and a great sweet shop a little further along the street. Overall we would return and I would imagine for a couple this would be a most fantastic retreat. From our stay we thought we gained a real authenticity to life in Florence.

Owner response:Thank you so much for your reflections on your stay with us in Florence. We enjoyed meeting you and your lovely family. We take pride in meeting the special needs of our guests and in being a help with anything that comes up during their stay. Your are right in that the neighborhood is wonderful, authentic and filled with great shops, bakeries, coffee bars and restaurants. Plus it is close to the train and bus station for easy access for the times one wishes to take a a day trip. Thank you again for your wonderful comments.

Excellent location, wonderful host

Date of Stay: 09/19/10 Review Submitted: 10/07/10

I would like to say what a wonderful time we had staying at Mary Rose's apartment. The location was fantastic!!!! We were about to walk to EVERYTHING we wanted. We walked along the river for the view or along many of the side streets. We couldn't believe how quickly we were able to get from the apartment to the "center" of the city where everything was. If you were staying at the apartment and you didn't want to leave the block you wouldn't need to, everything was close by such as groceries, a pizzeria, restaurants, and bakeries. The bakery literally outside the door was so wonderful and our breakfast choice every morning, it was very reasonably priced as well. We felt really safe walking in the neighbourhood at night. As mentioned in other posts, there is a lot of stairs to go up to get to the apartment door, after a few days of this you get used to it and it really isn't bad. The apartment itself was spacious and very clean. The laundry facilities were greatly appreciated as well. Mary Rose made the whole process so easy. She quickly answered all my emails with my many questions, set up the apartment contract and even got us a reservation to the Academia museum so we could go see the statue of David. Mary Rose and her husband met us at the apartment at our arranged time and showed us around and how everything worked, she gave us a map and suggested an antique market we might want to browse. I would definitely recommend her and the apartment to any of my friends and hope one day I might be able to stay again if she would have me. Thank you again!

Thank you so much letting us use your lovely apartment in Florence. The location is perfect & within walking distance to many sights. It also has a super bakery right next door & produce shop across the street. The apartment itself is charming with the "old world" character & a great updated kitchen. Two adults and two children fit perfect in it. Mary Rose, thank you also for getting the museum reservations for us in advance. It saved us a lot of time we would have spent standing in lines just for tickets. Florence ended up being our favorite place during our Italy vacation. Thank you again, Cherie

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our four-night stay on Borgo Ognissanti. Mary Rose and Flavio were gracious hosts, and the apartment was charming. Lots of narrow stairs, but we loved them. We call climbing stairs our "gelato tax." Great location because central but away from the tourist hordes, but still within walking distance of everything, including the Oltrarno. Also close to our rental car place, which was convenient. Several cafe bars nearby.

Mary and Fabio and their lovely apartment were a the most welcoming and wonderful of our trip. This was our family's first trip to Italy. We looked forward to this for many years. Mary helped us in multiple ways - making reservations at museums, suggesting a special restaurant for our anniversary, and helping us in general when we first arrived in Florence. The apartment is bright, cheery and spacious. They take excellent care of it. It was especially nice after a rather unpleasant flat in Rome. I will recommend Mary and Fabio to anyone traveling to Florence.

Just finished our week in Florence. The apartment is absolutely central to shops, restaurants, markets, museums, etc. The apartment is very entertaining, watching the people and shop owners from above. At the same time, the apartment is nice and quiet with the windows closed. The apartment is very secure and safe. We walked to and from the apartment to the central train station to visit Rome, Pisa, Venice. The apartment is furnished with everything you need.

Since our return from Florence we have been telling our friends and family about the Bellisimo apartment! Mary Rose and Fabio have created a very comfortable, inviting home in a perfect location with everything you need for a wonderful stay. We were there with our 2 young adult sons and had plenty of privacy and space. The apartment has charming architectural characteristics and is beautifully furnished. It has a great market across the street and is located so that you can walk wherever you might want to go or get to the train in 10 minutes. We would highly recommend this apartment to anyone travelling to Florence!

Mary, you gave us a home away from home. The extra attention to detail made this apartment well worth renting. The bed was very comfortable, two bathrooms a plus, and the apartment clean and orderly. The cell phone, internet access, central location, tips and suggestions as to what to visit, where to eat and where to find the best kept secrets of Florence made our two week stay highly memorable. You gave us everything we possibly needed to make our visit one to remember fondly. Thank you, Mary for sharing your fine apartment and your gift of friendship. We look forward to renting from you again. Irene

We were warmly welcomed by the owners Mary Rose & Fabio. Absolutely attentive to our needs, and went out of their way to be helpful. The apartment is located in the heart of what is happening in Florence. The Pizza restaurant right across the street treated us like family, and the local shops were accomodating and had everything we wanted or needed. Super convenient and walking distance to everything. The apartment has everything you need and want, and is smartly & comfortably apointed. We will definately stay there again when we re-visit Florence. I would recommend that visitors be in decent physical condition, because there are plenty of stairs. Thank you Mary Rose & Fabio!

Owner response:It is of great importance to me, to be able to meet the needs of my guests and to make sure they are comfortably situated in the apartment. I am happy to be of assistance and to extend a heartfelt welcome to those who come and stay with us. The apartment is located in a great, typical Florentine neighborhood that is close to everything from the historical center to public means of transportation, like buses and trains. Thank you so much Debra for your kind words. It was a pleasure meeting you and getting to know your family and I look forward to your next visit to Florence Italy. All the Best, Mary and Fabio

This very quaint apartment is in a great location. Many shops are located right on the same street for groceries, pastry, coffee, etc. The fully equipped kitchen made it easy to prepare lunch and breakfast so we could "splurge"on dinner every night. Our teenage daughter found the sofa-bed very comfortable. We appreciate the hospitality of our hostess and definitely will be back.

Echoing previous comments I'd like to amplify that this apartment is superb from a location and amenities perspective. Mary Rose was easy to communicate with in terms of the initial inquiry and booking process; she even assisted us in securing museum reservations. The apartment is very well positioned within the city so the historic center is easily accessible as is the train station and other services. The apartment's two-story layout works well and the second bathroom in the bedroom upstairs is nice to have. Specifically, the mattress was very comfortable and the kitchen is perfectly set up with nice appliances. Laundry is a nice plus, too. As noted by earlier reviewers, the street has a mini-mart, restaurants, several bakeries, etc. All in all we had a very positive experience with the apartment and would surely stay there again.

The charm of the apartment makes one feel she is actually living as a local. It also has all the conviences of home. Mary Rose is a great reference and her recommendations for resturants, museums and other facets of Florence were invaluable. The whole trip was magnifico!

My husband and I stayed at Mary's lovely top floor apartment for 3 days in early October 2007. We were in Italy for 3 weeks and this apartment in the heart of Florence was the best experience we had out of all the apartments and 4 star hotels we stayed at. The unit is completely updated, charming, very clean, has every amenity you'll ever need, the neighbors are quiet, and the neighborhood is wonderful. There are many shops, cafes and bars in the area. It was a treat to get back to the apartment after a long day of touring. It felt like home. The train station is only a 5 minute walk away. The apartment location is close enough to the sites, yet far enough away from the crowds. You'll feel like you're experiencing real Florentine life when you stay at her apartment. Her payment terms were simple and flexible. Dealing with her was a breeze and we'll definitely stay there again. Can't wait to go back!

My husband and I stayed at your oasis on 4 Oct 2007. I call it an oasis because that is what is was. The washer AND dryer, the air cond., the generous bathtub, all were just like being at home and quenched our thirst for those American conveniences we are so addicted to. But the special suprise was the cell phone. We were meeting up with friends quite often and having the cell phone was just what we needed. Your apartment also had a wonderful and resourceful library full of important and up to date information on the marvelous city of Florence. Besides the fact that the apartment oozed quaintness, it was also quite convenient to the buses, river, and train station. Thanks again for the lovely accommodation. We look forward to returning in the future.

Hi Mary Rose, We wanted to write and let everyone know how good we felt about our time at your place in Florence. (We stayed there in late April/early May of 2006.) Booking a reservation through VRBO was easy - and so was dealing with you as we prepared for our stay. I want to make sure folks take into consideration that the PROCESS of securing the reservation, getting the keys to the apartment, and getting the "lay of the land" is almost as important as the quality of the property. And it was "all good" - as we say. That's something that can't be underestimated when securing a reservation half way around the world in a country we had never visited. The apartment was in great condition, and the location in the city is certainly perfect - especially for those of us who like to discover through walking (and, boy, did we walk!). I must admit that the "sounds of the city" continue past our bedtime - but we quickly learned that closing a window or two fixed that. No worries. We will forever carry with us the memories of our favorite pasticerria just a few doors down and the wonderful little market directly across the street. Those romantic visions of cheese, bread, fruit and wine are true - and we really enjoyed them. Likewise, the pizzeria across the street was perfect for those nights when "informal but fabulous" was our goal. Having the washer and the dryer in the room worked. We had planned on them, packing lightly to take advantage - went off without a hitch - left lots of room to bring back souvenirs. We took advantage of the apartment's proximity to the train station to plan day trips to places like Bologna, Viareggio and Siena. In short, we had a marvelous time - thoroughly enjoying the experience and never once having to worry about our "home away from home." We have recommended your place to several people that are planning trips to Italy. We certainly know where we'll stay when we return. Thanks for everything, Mac and Gail

Greetings Mary! We finally made it home and I am (I think) coherent enough to send you our thanks for renting your flat to us. We had a marvelous time and the flat was perfect. It was just the right size and in a wonderful location. We loved the pastry shop right next door where we had cappucini and croissants every morning. Our only regret is that we were not able to bid the proprietors a proper goodbye. The convenience of the various markets was wonderful. We made dinner at the flat a few times and felt lucky that we found the pasta store a couple of blocks away so that we had wonderful pasta with our meals. Even with two weeks in Florence, we felt as if there were still many, many things we did not have time to do. We hope we left the flat in good condition. We did not use the phone so there should be no depletion of the amount on the phone. If we missed something or need to settle up on anything, please let us know. Again, thank you so much. We hope to visit again soon. In the meantime, if you ever come to Minnesota, please let us know so we can prepare a wonderful Minnesota welcome for you. Again, thanks for your kind hospitality and we'll be sure and recommend your apartment to anyone considering a Florence visit. With warmest regards, Barbara Wood and David Kampf

We loved the apartment. It is located in a very convenient part of Florence, away from the mobs, but close enough to the museums and churches to make it an easy walk to the major sights. It’s about a fifteen minute walk to the Duomo and about a five minute walk to the train and bus stations. There are ATMs and an internet location just around the corner from the apartment. The neighborhood is VERY safe. There is a friendly and helpful neighbor directly across the hall. The street—Borgo Oggnisante--has several small grocery stores and other shops. My favorite was literally at the bottom of the stairs. Fresh fruit, vegetables, pastries, bread, local wines, meats and some prepared food were all available within a one-block radius. Some of the merchants speak a little English, and some don’t, so it’s a great opportunity to practice your Italian. The apartment itself is nicely decorated and was very comfortable for us. I’d move in in a heartbeat. Although located in an old building, the apartment itself is absolutely modern and recently remodeled. The photos on the website don’t do it justice. It is much nicer than it appears. (It’s not that the photos are bad, but rather that the apartment is very nice in ways that are not adequately represented in the photos.) It is secure, so that there is no cause for concern about leaving money or passports there. The bedroom is air conditioned and even during very hot weather—around 90 degrees Fahrenheit when we arrived—we slept comfortably. There is a washer and dryer, but we found it unnecessary to use the dryer since clothing dried so rapidly when hung. (There is a clothesline upstairs.) There is an iron and an ironing board and a hair dryer. There are a plenty of towels and pillows. The bed is comfortable. I cooked a lot and loved the stove. There is a cell phone for local use, which turned out to be helpful to us since Air France lost our luggage and needed to reach us by phone. Someone with mobility limitations might find the apartment challenging both because of the number of stairs—it’s on the fourth floor and once you get there there’s another flight of stairs up to the bedroom; there’s no elevator—and because there is a high walled tub/shower. Mary Rose, the apartment’s owner, was very accommodating, both before we arrived and afterwards. We had no problems with the financial arrangements or in arranging to get into the apartment on a schedule that was convenient for us. I can’t think of a single thing s

Hu Mary, Just a quick note upon our return, thanking you for the availability of your wonderful apartment. It was perfect for our family of four, great location, spacious and comfortable. We wish we could have stayed longer! we all loved Florence so much. We echo the positive comments about Il Profeta. It's a gem and the owners are gracious and welcoming. Hope all is in good order, thank you very much again!

Hi Mary, Had an absolutely lovely time in Florence... what a wonderful city!! The Apt. was just great, we really enjoyed our visit. I hope we left the apt. in good order for you. Had some great meals, and loved the sightseeing and shopping. We must have walked 20-miles! We also took the double-decker sightseeing bus and would recommend it highly for people that want to get a nice intro. to the city, and we used it to go to Fiesole and loved the side trip up there. Monday we went to San Gimignano and loved the town and the country-side - inspiring. I hope some of my photos can due the landscape justice. We left early on Tuesday, and you were right about the Taxi - it was there in 10-minutes flat, just as you predicted-thanks! It was also nice to find the TAXI stand a block up and adjacent to the river. We mostly walked; but it saved us some time when we wanted to take a quick taxi to a site. I hope we were fine on the cellular phone minutes - if we owe you anything for those call, please let me know. Once again, thanks so much for your hospitality. We will recommend the apt. to others whenever we get the chance. Kindest regards, Doug Stang

Hi Mary, Amy and I had a wonderful 15 days in Italy. We loved Florence and really enjoyed our stay in your apartment. Everything was so convenient - the train station, the neighboring shops for wine, cheese, and baked goodies (Amy especially liked the small leather shop down the street), the sights... But the food was spectacular! We had wonderful meals at Sabatini and Armando's and also at your suggestions Mamma Gina and Il Profeta. We shall return!!!

Dear Mary, We have only just found an Internet place that is not too far from our house and are trying got catch up on our mail. I wanted to thank you again for your wonderful apartment and the help and hospitality that you provided while we were there. Believe me, the house here in Rome, while it has many charms, is not nearly so well equipped and comfortable as your place. All the best and thanks again. Ciao, Anne

Charming apartment in a great location. My wife and I stayed there for 8 days and loved the place. The hosts are great and knowledgable about the city, places to see, and transportation alternatives. Great local places to eat.

This is the PERFECT location for travelers. The apartment is hospital clean, wonderfully outfitted, and the hosts could not be more accommodating. Literally just steps to the Arno and the beautiful sunsets. Fabulous restaurants nearby, try Il Profeto across the street, best Tiramisu in the WORLD, pricey but worth it. We brought home a wheel of Pecorino from the Cheese shop downstairs, best ever. I can't wait to return. Thank you Mary for the best vacation ever.

I was reading all the entries in this book from previous residents and we all appear to be of one mind, as far as recognizing the superlatives of this apartment and the charm and warmth of its owners. We immediately met our first two Florentine angels as we arrived at the apartment. I could have hugged and kissed them for whisking our luggage up those steps. They were so full of helpful information in getting us started. We were very pleasantly surprised and pleased at all the thoughtful amenities you have provided with this apartment. The location for access to the city and public transportation is ideal and the variety of shops in one block supplies all our needs. It's hard to believe we lucked out with such winning combinations. Everything you provided made being here so stress-free that we were able to truly enjoy every minute of our week in Firenze. Bless you for your thoughtfulness!

Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine such a beautiful and warm welcoming home. I am somewhat sad to leave Borgo Ognissanti and Florence............. I can't express how much I loved your apartment. From feeling so homesick you made things very comfortable and at time I felt like I was at home. If I was ever to travel to Florence, Italy I would love to stay here again.

This was the perfect place to send my son off to college from. While he was settling into the NY campus, I was out and about in Florence and Fiesole. The weather, food, art and history were fantastic and the apartment just right for all I needed. Thank you for setting it up so well.

We hate to leave our lovely little home away from home. The comfortable accomadations added much to our enjoyment of this spectacular city and breath-taking Tuscany. How did you manage to secure such wonderful shops for your block! Groceries, wine and the baked goods all available steps away and pastry to die for. Ciao !

We've had such a lovely stay in this perfectly outfitted little home away from home. The location is wonderful- The air-conditioning has been a blessing and we've been happy to have a kitchen, where we've cooked the fresh groceries from the great Mercato Centrale. Thank you for all your help and friendliness.

You are a great hostess - providing us with so many thoughtful amenities. This apartment was darling and sooooo tidy! The only problem we had was "over-sleeping" on some mornings when it would have been better to get an early start! Thanks so much
