    • We spent 5 nights at Hale Mauka on a recent 2 week trip to the islands. What a great house and great base of operations for adventure on the southeastern end of the island. With day trips from the house, we hiked in the Park (across craters and through lava tubes), 4 wheeled to great swimming and snorkeling on the eastern end of the island, visited black sand beaches with turtles, watched lava flow into the sea and took the house's kayaks to Kealakekua Bay for some paddling and awesome snorkeling. At the end of each day we headed back to the house where we grilled a great dinner and relaxed in our own space. For our family Hale Mauka was perfect.

    • We chose Hale Mauka based on the amazing pictures posted here, but the pictures don't fully capture what a truly wonderful place it is. We had a great 4 night stay here in July with our 2 children. Incredibly clean and comfortable, with much love and care put in by the owners (who were lovely to deal with.) Many sights very accessible from here-Volcano National Park and night- time viewing of the lava, Botanical Garden, Hilo. You may even just want to spend the day reading or having coffee on the lanai!

    • Look no further…..you have just located the ultimate vacation home to relax and stay in at Volcano, HI…..bar none…..period. This home is lavishly furnished throughout with only the very best amenities. Simply peruse the description page of what this beautiful home has to offer. What more could you ask for? And unlike many vacation homes offering “the best” in accommodations, this one truly delivers. Every item listed was available on our recent visit 06/28/09 – 07/01/09 and more. I personally challenge anyone to think of anything this home does not provide. Believe me, the Varney’s have thought of EVERYTHING. From salt to shampoo, this place has it all. Oh, and if you do happen to think of something, the owners are just a phone call away and will provide you with whatever it is you are seeking! Clean, affordable, luxury is prevalent through out this impeccably maintained property. Quiet, serene and comfortable, I assure you that you will not be disappointed. In closing, this home more than exceeded our expectations and was centrally located to everything the east side of the Island has to offer. Steve and Gail Tabor Wilsonville, Oregon

    • What a lovely place... we drove up and all said wow... we walked in and we all said wow! Thank you for sharing this home of comfort so thoughtfully put together to delight us. The cleanliness, the comfort of beds, the decor, drums and guitar, everything totally delighted our family of 6 adults. Evening definitely required the fireplace but daytime in the midst of the ferns/trees and all the extra touches you have along the path...well what more can I say but thank you and I am so pleased to have found you for our stay Feb.17-19/09. Volcano National Park is a must do on the Big Island and overnight stays really are the only way to do it justice. So... we came and explored and delighted in sharing this spot.

    • We stayed at Volcano Hale Mauka for 5 days in February, 2009, and loved it! The cottage was lovely and very well furnished. The setting is quiet and private; great for a relaxing stay. The location is perfect if you plan to spend time at Volcano National Park or in and around Hilo. We would absolutely stay here again.

    • My husband and I and three boys stayed at Hale Mauka for three days in February 2009 and loved it! The location and setting of the house was wonderful - right in the middle of the rainforest, but close to the town of Volcano and the entrance to the National Park. The house was so well equipped too! I cannot think of anything (flashlights, kitchen appliances, laundry) that we needed that was not there. We really appreciated the detailed albums showing family pictures and descriptions of the must-see locations around Volcano (as well as Hilo and other short trips). We felt like we were in a friend's house! We spent one entire day exploring the Volcano National Park. We loved the hike through the rainforest into one of the craters (name escapes me now) which was suggested by the aforementioned albums. We easily could have spent more time at Hale Mauka as there is so much to do in the surrounding area - Black Sand Beach and other beaches and parks. After our stay in Volcano, we drove to the other side of the island, which was about 3 hours (one way) . We spoke to some people who wanted to take a day trip from Kona to Volcano which I would really not recommend especially with children. Too much driving and you wouldn't see very much of the volcanoes or other parts of the island. I would really suggest spending at least two nights at Hale Mauka. I felt like we got to experience the island from the perspective more as a local than a tourist. We hope to come back soon!

    • We are just now packing up after spending five days (Feb, 2009) at Hale Mauka. My wife and I have stayed at rental properties in Israel, Australia, Japan, Costa Rica, South Africa and all over the U.S. and Canada, many in a higher price range than Hale Mauka. NONE of them was as charming, as well-equipped, or as appealing and comfortable as this gem in the rainforest. Diana really thought of everything we could possibly want, and much more. The description on the internet doesn't do this place justice. The house is well-designed, built with quality components, and furnished and appointed with elegance and style. When our childen are ready for their first trip to Hawaii, I'll certainly recommend that they spend a week here. There's so much to do - the location is perfect for volcano and nature lovers, and the drive down to Hilo and surroundings is a breeze. Although much feared, the rain showers hardly affected our plans at all. All you need is a little flexibility regarding indoor and outdoor pursuits. What can I say, we had a wonderful five days here and wished it could be more. - Isaac and Jane Hoch

    • My husband and I stayed at Hale Mauka in November which was our first time to the Big Island. The vacation home exceeded our expectations. It was fully equipped with everything needed for relaxing in comfort. We stayed three nights and spent most of our time hiking in the park. The location of the house is ideal. We highly recommend Hale Mauka and hope to return for another lovely vacation.

    • Hale Mauka is an oasis away from home. Nestled in the rain forest, this unique vacation hideaway offers all the conveniences of home and more--a large porch to sit and relax on, beautiful wooden floors and high wooden ceilings; an amazing modern kitchen with every kitchen gadget you can think of; We shopped the Farmers Market in Hilo and came home to Hale Mauka to make amazing meals; a great bathroom with all ammenities.... There was also a huge TV (all stations available) plus tons of DVDs for kids and adults. Location was also great. We took a leisurely walk into town of volcano one day and visited volcano park various days and nights. Diane was very helpful with our questions and photo book of various things to do around the island very useful.I would recommend Hale Mauka to all vacationers.

    • My husband and I stayed at Hale Mauka just 2 nights on a short trip to the Big Island. It was a great pairing with the few days we spent at a resort in Kohala on the west shore of the island--2 completely different experiences. Hale Mauka is comfortable, clean, and very well-equipped, with lots of "extras" around the house that make it feel homey. Although it's just minutes away from the "downtown" of Volcano and the national park, it feels private and isolated and is very quiet. It's a lovely, quiet retreat. At the same time, it's within driving distance of some really cool, beautiful, fun sights that feel off the beaten track. Diane's book of photos showing suggested activities/day trips in the area is really helpful. We wish we'd had a longer trip to Hawaii and could have spent more time here.
