The Roth Residence in the Hollywood Hills
High above Warner Brothers and Universal Studios, this mid-century modern architectural masterpiece is now available for short-term rental
This extraordinary home in the Hollywood Hills has been described as a "work of art you can live in." Situated on a secluded cul-de-sac overlooking Studio City with panoramic views of the San Fernando Valley and the San Gabriel Mountains, this three bedroom, three bath architectural delight has the feel of living in a luxurious tree house.
The Roth Residence was built in 1946 by famed architect Rudolph Schindler, who was honored with the only solo exhibition of an architect’s work at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art. It is an icon of Schindler’s groundbreaking concept of space itself as the primary element of architecture. A sensitive restoration added modern systems and amenities while retaining its original architectural integrity.
Only a handful of R. M. Schindler houses remain with their original architectural beauty preserved. Celebrated Australian architect Glenn Murcutt, winner of his profession’s highest honor, the Pritzker Prize, declared the Roth Residence the best Schindler house he has ever seen. The house has been featured in numerous books, including a four-page chapter in Modernism Reborn: Mid-Century American Houses by Michael Webb.
Adding to the home’s beauty are period furnishings and art, such as Noguchi tables, a Heywood-Wakefield dining set, chairs by Prouve, Eames, Mies van der Rohe and Bertoia, an Edward Wormley sofa by Dunbar, Tufenkian Tibetan rugs, an antique globe collection, and a signed print by Alexander Calder.
The large wood-burning stone fireplace is complimented with mid-century fireplace tools. There is a collection of books on R. M. Schindler and his houses. And the park-like grounds and patio offer privacy with spectacular vistas. Nearby are two hiking trails through the Hollywood Hills.
Located near the intersection of Laurel Canyon and Ventura Blvd., this unique property is only minutes from Universal Studios, Warner Brothers Studios, Beverly Hills, Hollywood and Griffith Park.
Amenities include: Wi-Fi, 3 LCD HD flat screen TV’s each with a DVD player, DirecTV satellite with premium channels and an HD digital recorder; Bose iPod sound dock; Central A/C, 4 digital wireless telephones and unlimited local phone service; one Weber gas BBQ grill and one Weber charcoal BBQ grill; Kenmore high-capacity washer and dryer; and a queen-size raised Aerobed. The master bedroom has a queen-size bed with a W Hotel Mattress, down comforter, and luxury Frette sheets and duvet. There is a tree-level outdoor sitting deck off the master bedroom.
