Hilo house description

Guests often comment that our home exceeded their expectations. It's probably because of all the local materials and the attention to detail. There are local hard-wood floors throughout (even the bathrooms and kitchen), custom stained glass windows, granite counter tops, and lots of original artwork. There's also an outdoor shower, two beach cruiser bikes and two mountain bikes, Instant access Netflix Movies and unlimited music from Pandora on the TV, purified (by reverse osmosis) drinking water, your own water well with whole house ultra violet filtration system (no worries about running out of water or other problems association with 'catchment systems' that are common in our area), solar-heated hot water, various board games, some good Hawaiiana books, various floaty pool toys, and plenty of etc.

MASTER BEDROOM (UPSTAIRS)
A comfortable king sized bed with soft cotton sheets, vintage rattan reading chairs, vintage mango wood dresser, ceiling fan, and 2 bed side tables both with reading lamps. The direct ocean view from the bedroom also allows for great breezes. The wide balcony is directly in front of both upstairs bedrooms.

2ND BEDROOM (UPSTAIRS)
A comfortable queen sized bed also with soft cotton sheets, writing desk and chair that faces the ocean, 2 bed-side tables with reading lamps, ceiling fan, and a dresser make this a fully functional room with that same huge ocean view.

BATHROOM (UPSTAIRS)
The bathroom is accessed by both bedrooms. It has a tub/shower and sink/vanity in one room, and a separate room for the toilet. Shampoo, hair conditioner, hand soap, TP, and plenty of towels are all provided.

3RD BEDROOM (DOWNSTAIRS)
A comfortable queen sized bed, with good cotton sheets, a small closet with shelf for luggage, ceiling fan, chair, luggage stand, a free-form mango-wood built-in table and 2 reading lights. This room is set back from the front of the house but still has an incredible ocean view. It also has 2 intriguing stained glass windows -- 1 depicting Kilauea Volcano, the other a humpback whale breaching. Breathtaking when the light hits it just right.

BATHROOM (DOWNSTAIRS)
Tub/shower, vanity and sink, toilet, and incredible large stained glass window depicting a Polynesian voyaging canoe and a variety of wildlife. Again, shampoo, hair conditioner, hand soap, and TP are all provided.

LIVING SPACE AND KITCHEN (DOWNSTAIRS)
The living room is decorated with a vintage Hawaiian comfort, yet with modern updates -- DISH TV, Pandora, Wi-Fi. There is also quite a bit of original artwork. There's a full sized dining table with 6 chairs, as well as 4 bar chairs. The kitchen is fully stocked -- espresso machine, regular coffee maker, toaster, blender, microwave, and plenty of dishes, silverware, cookware, and all things needed for cooking your healthy meals at home. The Barbecue (propane) is just outside--Fresh Fish is always good from the BBQ.

STAIRS: The upstairs is accessed via stairs which start near the front door and are on the outside of the house. We like this because we see the ocean and the stars at night. It also keeps the upstairs bedrooms more private.

HEALTH ISSUES
The triple filtered drinking water is a big bonus. Many houses in our area use 'catchment' systems, catching water off their roof. There are good filter systems, and there are less-than-good filter systems. We have an excellent reverse osmosis system that actually purifies your drinking water. FYI, wherever you decide to stay in East Hawaii you should ask about their water system.

HUMPBACK WHALES -- WOW, THEY CAN BE CLOSE.
In front of our home, the ocean gets deep quickly. Because of this, their birthing and mating months (December - April) are excellent times for hearing humpback whales at night, and of course seeing them by day. Their tail slapping can wake you up--no kidding.

IN CONCLUSION
Our home is fully functional, clean, comfortable, AND in a great location. In short, it is 'homey'. You will be only 25-30 minutes from Hilo Airport, a few minutes more to Downtown, Bayfront or Richardson's Beach and 20 minutes from Pahoa, a Great/Funky Restaurant town. You will be 30 minutes from the warm ponds at Ahalanui and the Marine Sanctuary where you can snorkel with tame good-sized schools of fish! You're also 45 minutes to Volcanoes National Park (location of the historical Kilauea Caldera, and home of Pele the fire goddess) and 45 minutes away, in the other direction, from the Ocean Entry for Flowing Lava. This is subject to change of course, but has been amazingly steady of late.

If you're looking for a comfortable, spacious, truly OCEANFRONT home, retreat, and a base of operations, this is it. This is the house that Jack built, in 1998. First camping out in the would-be garage, then creating an artistic retreat/bachelor pad, and ultimately a great family home. We happily lived there for many years.

The ocean is mesmerizing by day, lulling to deep sleep at night. The ocean-side deck with spa and swimming pool will become your outdoor living room. The neighborhood is nice and friendly and you can walk or ride bikes for miles along the coast in either direction. Or you can hang out. You just might not want to leave.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in your piece of paradise - again- just 2 years after we stayed there the first time. The view is something we take home to dream about in our cold Canadian winters - the sight of sunny, clear blue skies, palm trees, black rocks & the swimming pool & hot tub inviting us in! The water temperature was just perfect. We love the feeling of being in the lush jungle and away from the crowds. The big waves crashing in front if a storm comes up have us all running for cameras & squealing with delight! Your home fits our extended family just right. The main floor was great for the family with a 3-year old and the upstairs bedrooms with our own deck to enjoy the view was also great for our son & for my husband & I. We got used to the tree frogs songs & missed that when we went back to Kona. The beds are comfortable with nice bedding, bathrooms clean & adequate, kitchen well-equipped and the beautiful wood on the floors, walls & ceilings give the house a cabin feel that we really enjoy. We went on many little outings and found your location just great for touring on the Big Island's East Side. We look forward to returning again, hopefully in another 2 years.

Recommended for: Families with teenagers, families with young children, sightseeing.

We arrived to Humbback Whales breaching right out in front a few hundred feet beyond the swimming pool! This was followed by a glorious moonrise from behind the palm trees while we sipped wine and watched the stars. I like to think that was a good omen that set the stage for the rest of our stay. The house was rather unassuming as we drove in, but entering from the garage immediately you see the beautiful wood counters and flooring and then dramatic views from the huge ocean-facing windows. It has a very open and luxurious feel, yet welcoming and not pretentious like some of the places we've stayed on the Kona side of the island. The decor was cute too, you could tell some thought went into making the place fun and functional. The trade-winds were pleasant and kept the house cool too. All amenities we could think of were provided and the house was extremely clean. WIFI speeds were surprisingly good too, considering we weren't in town. We enjoyed delicious cappuccinos from the comfort of the back porch then went for a bike ride down "Beach Road" to get our appetites going. While the house is close to many sightseeing areas (Kapoho tidepools and hot-ponds, Kalapana lava viewing, Farmer's Market, and Hilo just 20 minutes away), we ended up spending a good part of each day just relaxing right there. I guess you could say the place reminded us to slow down and enjoy our vacation rather than race around trying to do as much touristy stuff as possible. All in all while we didn't get white sand beaches, we got our own piece of paradise away from the crowds and vog of the Kona side. The pictures don't do it justice, but they do give you an idea of how everything looks. Until next time... Aloooooooha Big Island!

We so enjoyed this special house in such a great location. Though we did lots of sightseeing, we were always keen to get back to the property. Very private, lovely to be right on the ocean. very well equipped and totally special. We had allowed for the fact that we were not close to restaurants so were quite happy to self cater. I would thoroughly recommend this property to anyone. Lots of nice walks nearby and we always seemed to have better weather than the rest of the Hilo area. We did not want to leave!

This is the 3rd house we have stayed at in the Hilo area and was by far the best one. The views from all rooms in the house are amazing. The beds and seating are all very comfortable. We had 5 people in our group and no one felt crowded. The upstairs lanai was a wonderful gathering place to sit and view the ocean. The pool and hot tub were clean and we used them often. Traveling to volcano, downtown Hilo and Pahoa are all short drives. Barbara was very helpful with many suggestions on what to visit in the area. I would highly recommend this property, we cooked in most nights and had plenty of pots, pans, utensils and plastics for left-overs. I can't think of anything that was missing. Having the bikes was very nice for a short ride around the area also.

If you're looking to relax by spending hours looking out at the ocean, lounging by the pool, and feeling the warm winds off the Pacific Ocean, then this house is for you. We spent a lot of time on the upstairs deck - it was hard to tear ourselves away to get in the car to see some other parts of this beautiful island! On the days we succeeded, we: - Visited Hilo (Farmer's Market was a really cool experience) - Drove to Waimea/Kamuela (beautiful, upcountry ranch town in the north) - Snorkeled in the Wai'opae tide pools (highly recommended - a singular experience) - Drove the Saddle Road which lies between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa (hard to beat that scenery) - Visited Volcanoes National Park twice (hiked the Kilauea Iki Trail - very cool) As for our time in the house, we were happy to find it clean and comfortable. One pleasant surprise - the downstairs living area was larger than it seemed in the photos. The kitchen was well-stocked, and we saved money by preparing our own meals about 40% of the time. We had some incredible meals at Kaleo's and Luquin's (both great options for vegetarians) in nearby Pahoa. Boogie Woogie Pizza and Ning's Thai were good, too. We know that we are very fortunate to have experienced this beautiful house, and the beauty and aloha of the Puna district and the Big Island. Also, many thanks to Barbara for accommodating our late flight time on the day of our departure. You made it so much easier for us!

This is a fabulous house containing everything we needed for our stay on the island! Great kitchen, great living space - overall wonderful accommodations. But the best part was what's right outside the backdoor. Being right on the ocean, it was so great to just relax and listen to the waves from the deck or from the main bedroom. Barb was so great to work with and even offered suggestions on what we might do while there. Check out the tidepools and head south on 137 to Kalapana while there! If you are looking for something off the more beaten path but that allows you to easily pack up the car and go exploring, this is the place.

I just wanted to convey my gratitude and appreciation for the time we spent in your beach house. It was perfect. Your thoughtfulness is evident in the decor, the furnishings, and the extra touches. Although we were on the Big Island for over 2 1/2 weeks, the time spent at your beach house were superior to anything we had experienced. I encourage anyone who is looking to come to the Big Island to book time at your beach house. It was absolutely perfect!

The stay was great. I was disappointed that the Jacuzzi wasn't working. That was one of the reasons I chose that rental. At a minimum, we should have been notified that it wasn't working so we wouldn't have been disappointed after arriving. Otherwise, it was a very good.

This house was exactly as advertised. Secluded. Quiet. Clean and Homey with an absolutely breathtaking view of the ocean only a few yards away. We stayed in the house for three weeks and found very few reasons to need to leave. Every morning we would wake up with ambitious plans to drive across the island to Kailua or hike the Mauna Kea summit, and by the end of breakfast we would have been seduced by the sound of the waves, the comfort of the deck and the convenience of the pool, and shelve our ambitious plans until the next day or the day after. We went to the Hilo side of the Big Island to truly get-away from it all, and this charming house by the sea between Pahoa and Kea'au was the centerpiece of making it happen. The home's proximity to the shore gave us many brilliantly sunny days despite forecasts of rain a few miles away in Pahoa. We were also ringside for some of the coolest wildlife Hawaii offers with nearly daily visits by two healthy Nene Geese, numerous Honu surfing below the beautiful lava ledge, two species of gecko's, dozens of small green Mejito birds, several friendly mongooses and the nightly chorus from the Coqui Frogs. The upstairs rooms were always pleasantly cool as the tradewinds came in off the ocean and the deck afforded some amazing sunrise views. The bedrooms were all spacious and the showers were clean and the spray was strong. My wife and I love to cook and found the kitchen very well equipped with a terrific refrigerator and gas stove. The amenities were perfect. But more important than the amenities was the over-all 'vibe' that the house imparted. The warm hardwood floors and the large windows accentuated a morning and evening glow that was very soothing. The quiet beach road was perfect for morning runs or afternoon walks. The entire spirit of the island seemed focused in that one place; the sea, the sky, the lava, the jungle, the animals, the breeze, the flowers, the ohi'o berries and avocados along the road and the banana tree in the yard all seemed to say 'Aloha'. I am a kama'aina who originally grew up on O'ahu but moved to the mainland years ago. The Hawai'i I remember from the 1960's and 1970's still exists in Pahoa and Kea'au and Hilo. The spirit of Aloha my family and I thrive off of can still be found on the Big Island, unlike anywhere else in the islands. The center of that universe for us is in this quiet but stunning and soulful house by the sea. We cannot wait to return again next summer

This was our second trip to the Big Island and we looked forward to it with great expectancy. This beautiful home helped make this trip a very restful and comfortable eperience. Barbara and Kathy were so easy to work with and they had the home in fabulous shape for our arrival. The location was excellent --near Hilo with access to all the activities, close of the volcanos and swimming. We visited the falls, snorkled many times and saw the Manta Rays, and took in all the sites of the area. It was great! The pool was a wonderful addition to the home and the cool breezes from the ocean just feet away made it a very comfortable settng for activities and sleeping. This home is spacious -- there were seven adults in our party and we had plenty of space to accommodate our needs. Our week in this home was awesome! If you pick this home...you will be thrilled with the choice. We feel blessed to have made great chosen this home.. I am not overstating it when I say that our trip this time to the Big Island was the best because of our home selection. Barbara was so very helpful in her conversation prior to booking and on one other call about activities. Her printed materials also gave us many insights on the area and things to do. Just a great home, a wonderful visit to Hilo, and a strong desire to return. This home is a winner!

                      Owner info

                      Year Purchased: 1998

About the owner: Here we are checking out the lava flow. We have lived in East Hawai`i for over 30 years, so we obviously love Hawai`i. Jack is a 3rd generation Hardwood Flooring Contractor and Barbara is a jaquette of all trades, most recently working for the County of Hawai`i.

                      Why the Owner Chose Hilo:
East Hawaii is varied, and exciting; the volcano never ceases to inspire and thrill. Madame Pele gives her unique energy to the whole of East Hawaii, and especially the Puna District. We have lived in East Hawaii for so long, and this house was our home, until we moved to the Big City of Hilo. Jack built this home in 1998, after living a few blocks away for about 15 years. We have completed a major re-fresh in Fall, 2013, and seem to always be cleaning, upgrading, or doing maintenance on something. The house is definitely in good order.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
Because our home is almost at the end of a quiet dead-end street, it is very restful and private. We like to find new spots, via bicycle, or hiking boots, or swimming fins. There are so many incredible places to explore and we never get tired of adventuring. We like to walk or bike the coastline--for miles. To the south, we go to some tidepools about 1 1/2 miles away. To the north, we bike, then hike the last bit to a white sand beach that's about 5 miles away. We also spend many hours lounging back and forth between the hot tub, the pool, and lazing around on the deck. It's so private and quiet--we love it.
