Kehena Makai is like a pearl among Kehena properties. It sits right on the lava rock ledge where the waves splash on them every moment, you can feel the spray! The owners had this house completely remodeled and everything is new as of June 2007. It's so much nicer to vacation in a brand new home, let alone the superb ocean front setting. There's nothing between you and the ocean, just feel the nice tropical warmth. The blue Pacific ocean is 180 degree wide open in front of you! During the day you might spot whales and dolphins. At night the ocean sound is your lullaby to get your to sweet dreams. The only house closer to the water is Kapoho Makai, our other rental property in Vacationland, where the whole yard is under water during high tides.
Kehena Makai is beautifully furnished in classic Hawaiiana style rattan and bamboo. Both bedrooms are master oceanfront with views along two walls. The woven bamboo ceiling adds to the tropical ambiance. The house is built in the traditional sugar cane shack style and yet newly constructed in 2001 and finished in 2007. This is a classic Hawaiian home in upscale materials and design. You will appreciate the views and the windows that all open for the sea breeze. We have had many repeated guests since we started a year ago.

Why the Owner Chose Kehena
John came to the Big Island in the 80s and his love for it never changed all these years. We purchased this home Kehena Makai in 2006 to further fulfill our Hawaiian dreams. John's been working a lot on this house to make sure it has the best offering a higher end vacation rental home could be, so more people could experience the unique and true Hawaiiana of this part of the island. We love white sandy beach and luxury resorts too, but we love the original Hwaiiana more! If you like to snorkel in one of the best reserved marine conservations in the world, there's Kapoho Waiopai; if you like to see Pele there's the only live volcano which flows into the ocean, amazing fireworks drops into the ocean with sky high steam it's just breathtaking; if you like to drive along the uncultivated coast line you can do it along one the most beautiful drives in the world - the red dirt road with tree canopy on top of your head; if you like to see traditional and historical hula cultures there's the Merry Monarch Festival every April around Easter Time; if you like to surf with the local boys and girls, come on over; if you like to see the best tropical botanic garden, come on over, etc...this is Puna, the real Hawaii.
Owner's Map of Kehena
We own Daylight Home, Lighting and Patio, a home furnishing retail store in San Luis Obispo, CA, the happiest city in the US. The business requires lots hard and long hour work and travels. John also likes to participate in building homes and does maintenance works; Susanna helps him with the business and loves to communicate with people who are interested in renting our lovely homes, and likes to decorate the interiors and cooks. So it works out just perfect. We love travel, love meeting people, entertaining friends, Hawaii the Big Island is one of our most favorite destinations in the world. We love the air, the sky, the ocean, the fish, the people, the plants, the flowers, the animals, the lava, the passion, the original true Hawaiianana. We feel we are the kane and wahine when we are on the island or when we miss the island.

Loved every minute. The house is right on the water, you couldn't get any closer! You feel as if you're on a boat, but without the rocking! The house is beautiful. There are matching bedrooms/bathrooms (newly decorated, very nice) on each side which makes it perfect for 2 couples. All essentials are there, along with nice Hawaiian decorations. You are in a home & can feel that. I would stay there again in a heartbeat.

My wife and I spent 10 glorious days in this fabulous house and I want 10 years. The view is mesmerizing, the house wide open yet cozy and the location perfect. Just a short walk through the beautiful neighborhood to the clothing-optional black sand beach for a great swim. And a short drive to either Kalapana for breakfast and a stroll on the amazing Lava Trail or the Tide Pools for the best snorkeling we've enjoyed for years. The closest town, Pahoa, supplies all you need with 2 great restaurants, Keleo's and Paolo's and a great coffee house, Puna Java to boot. Best vacation we've had in years and the best house we've ever rented. Five stars!

Thank you so much for sharing your slice of heaven with us. When I asked you long ago if this was a quiet and "non touristy" get away - you said yes! You were right, exactly what we were looking for - rest, relaxation, rejuvenation, can't ask for more! See you again soon.

We couldn't have asked for a better way to cap off our 10 day Hawaii honeymoon! It was nice to get away from Kona and escape to this beautiful little oasis. It was incredible to wake up to the sunrises each morning. We would definitely recommend this place to our friends!

Your home was perfect for our first visit to Hawaii. The home is so interesting from the history of the world to the little crabs down on the lava shelf. It was the most relaxing two weeks we have had in a very long time. Thank you again we can't wait to come back.

your lovely home is beautifully decorated and so well equipped. We never tired of watching the sea breaking onto the lava below, and we saw numerous whales passing by out at sea, and also heard them at night.
