Feel the Ocean Spray Right on Your Lanai

Kehena Makai is like a pearl among Kehena properties. It sits right on the lava rock ledge where you can feel the spray! The house was completely remodeled and everything is new as of June 2007. There's nothing between you and the ocean, just feel the nice tropical warmth. The blue Pacific ocean is 180 degree wide open view in front of you! During the day you might spot whales and dolphins. At night the ocean sound is your lullaby to get your to sweet dreams. The only house closer to the water is Kapoho Makai, our other rental property in Vacationland, where the whole yard is under water during high tides.
Kehena Makai is beautifully furnished in classic Hawaiiana style rattan and bamboo. Both bedrooms are oceanfront with views along two walls. The woven bamboo ceiling adds to the tropical ambiance. The house is built in the traditional sugar cane shack style and yet newly constructed in 2001 and finished in 2007. This is a classic Hawaiian home in upscale materials and design. You will appreciate the views and the windows that all open for the sea breeze.

Even the rainy days are fantastic at this side of the island - so much to do and see! We spent days chasing down the best ice coffee - from the food truck at the park just north of Pahoa. It's hard to pin point our faves: Mauna Kea Observatory Wai'opae tidal pools and hot pod hike to Shipman Beach, great! And this house! The sorndo, the sun, the air is like velvet. Thank you, mahalo for your hospitality!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Just being able to fall asleep to the sound of the ocean is an experience, we will not soon to forget! And waking up to the sun on your face...Wow! We will be back to visit someday again...to hang out the geckos and hear the humpbacks playing at night in the water just in front of the lanai on a clean moonlight night, we could almost se it as it splashed and breached. Your place is beautiful and has all the comforts of home without the cold!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

While the tourists are enamored with the architecture "wonder" next door, they are missing out on this gem of a place. Your home is beautiful, and the attention to design detail is masterful. You've thought of everything, and we have been completely comfortable. Our favorite part of the house - the lanai. We've spent hours in those comfortable chairs watching the surf, the boats, the geckos and occasional spinner dolphin and whale, including one that was so close we were looking down on it! Speaking of whales, we were treated to a concert of "tail slapping" early one morning - and though it was too dark to see anything. The sound was so loud, we didn't think they could have been more than a few yards off the lanai, amazing! As a couple who travels to the islands often this was by far one of the best trips, made all the better by your fabulous home! Thanks so much!Did you find this review helpful? This is a wonderful house with a breathtaking location. You are literally on the edge of the ocean. Watching the sunrise and moonrise from the deck was truly magical. The house itself is beautifully decorated and well-equipped. The owners are great to work with. We've stayed here twice and would happily do so again.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway.

The house was great for our Hawaii vacation. We had a great time, the house is very comfortable, quiet and private. The listing is accurate with both description and photos. The owners were helpful with all of the details. I would highly recommend this house. The Lani is wonderful with great ocean and sunrise views. Only disappointment... no whales.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

GREAT choice for first visit to the Big Island

My husband and I had been to Maui many times but never to the Big Island. We had no sense of what might be a good location, so chose this rental house based on other reviews. It was the perfect place for us to enjoy everything we wanted to do for our first trip -- enjoyed good thai food in Puna, easy access to Volcano National Park, farmers market in Hilo, snorkeling, several wonderful beaches close by, and a quiet street for evening walks. We also enjoyed down time at the house, watching the sunrise every morning, listening to ocean waves, cooking our own meals, and just hanging out relaxing. We'd definitely return to this same rental again, and recommend it to others! We love that it's not too far from Puna and Hilo, yet is right on the water, and off the beaten path enough that you can stay at home and be away from the crowds and just enjoy the sound of the waves. The house has everything you need -- dishes, towels, laundry room. Booking the house was easy, directions were great, and owners quick to respond to our inquiry and questions. Note: The house is far enough off the beaten path that tv and wifi service are intermittent. The power did go out once while we were there, and the tv wasn't getting satellite reception for much of our time there. This was okay with us. But, if you need reliable internet or tv/cable 24/7, this isn't the house for you. We did have to go into town once to check our email while th power was out. Also, the tap water is not recommended to drink, so be prepared to boil your water or purchase enough bottled water for drinking. The owners didn't warn us about this (or maybe they did, but we forgot), so we weren't prepared and had to take a half day to track down potable water. Again, not a big deal, and worth it for being in such a secluded location, but important to keep in mind as you choose your rental house.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

This is the 2nd year in a row that we stayed at this ocean front vacation home on the most beautiful stretch of the Big Island. The house is beautifully decorated with Hawaiian motif. Full and thoughtful amenities, including fins and snorkels... The best feature of the house is the lanai which offers the sweeping view of the ocean. We spent hours lodging on the lanai sipping coffee or a glass of wine while watching passing whales, playing dolphins... We can't wait to go back next year!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

Wow is my first impression when driving up. We just arrived and the sound of the birds and the ocean is amazing. I can not wait to do some exploring tomorrow. The surf is beautiful. It has been a wonderful time here and relaxing. A couple of tips: the Botanical Garden is worth it, the black sand beach is amazing, and a wasted day isn't really wasted if you are out here in paradise. Wish I had another week. Thank you for making this wonderful place available.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

Your house is beautiful! Thank you for a wonderful time! Love the breeze, crashing waves and frogs! Perfect location to go north or south to the lava and Volcanoes Nat'l Park, or do absolutely nothing at all. So relaxing! We will be back! MahaloDid you find this review helpful? We had a wonderful week in your beautiful home. Your thoughtfulness as books is apparent in so many ways - the charming decor, fully stocked kitchen, and we really appreciate the guidebook you put together! As other guests mention the experience of sitting on the lanai partaking the ever changing drama of the elements - transcendent. Thank you for sharing your home.Did you find this review helpful? About the owner: Ocean front location, plus a well decorated and comfortably furnished interior are what we are up to. We own Daylight Home, Lighting and Patio, a home furnishing retail store in San Luis Obispo, CA. John also likes to participate in building homes; Susanna helps him with the business and loves to communicate with people who are interested in renting our lovely homes, and likes to decorate the interiors and cooks. So it works out just perfect. We love travel, love meeting people, entertaining friends, Hawaii the Big Island is one of our most favorite destinations in the world. We love the air, the sky, the rain, the ocean, the fish, the people, the plants, the flowers, the animals, the lava, the passion. We feel that we are the kane and wahine when we are on the island or when we miss the island. Our license plates are 2kapoho and 2kehena!
Why the Owner Chose Kehena:
John came to the Big Island in the 80s and his love for it has grown all these years. We purchased this home Kehena Makai in 2006 to further fulfill our Hawaiian dreams. John's been working a lot on this house to make sure it has the best offering a higher end vacation rental home could be, so more people could experience the unique and true Hawaiiana of this part of the island. We love white sandy beach and luxury resorts too, but we love the original Hwaiiana more! If you like to snorkel in one of the best reserved marine conservations in the world, there's the Kapoho Waiopai tide pools; if you like to see Pele there's the only live volcano which flows into the ocean, amazing fireworks drop into the ocean with sky high steam it's just breathtaking; if you like to drive along the uncultivated coast line you can do it along one the most beautiful drives in the world - the red road with tree canopy on top of your head; if you like to see traditional and historical hula cultures there's the Merry Monarch Festival every April at Easter Time; if you like to surf with the local boys and girls, come on over; if you like to see the best tropical botanic garden, come on over...this is Puna, the real Hawaii.
