Stonington, on the island of Deer Isle, is an unspoiled fishing village with the ambiance of 50 years ago. A perfect spot from which to explore the myriad of islands in the Penobscott Bay. It is very popular with kayakers. You can take the ferry out to Isle Au Haut and hike the trails of this part of Acadia National Park. Watch windjammers and lobster boats in the busy harbor, browse in a gallery, eat and drink in the many restaurants nearby, walk the country lanes.
The newly restored Stonington Opera House provides first rate live theater and hosts the Deer Isle Jazz Festival each summer. Fifty minutes north is Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor. Deer Isle is home to the popular Haystack Mountain School of Crafts and there are numerous galleries and studios to visit. Stonington is one of the major lobster ports on the coast of Main. Many historical towns are nearby as well as an incredible view on Caterpillar Hill. |
