Fred and Ruth, thank you for sharing your wonderful cabin in such a beautiful location. My wife and I were seeking a quiet, late season fall week-end getaway and we were both enchanted by your graciousness and hospitality. Thank you both for an absolutely perfect escape from the hustle and bustle.

Total relaxation!

Guest: Matt K.
Date of Stay: 07/30/11 Review Submitted: 08/06/11

We chose this cabin for 2 reasons - the location and we could take our 2 year old golden retriever Louie. The cabin was immaculate, and the location is something that can not be described. Over the course of the week we saw only 4 other boats on the lake! Waking up in the morning and Louie jumping right into the lake, grabbing a cup of coffee and sitting on the dock, and then sitting there watching the loons, otters, and eagles in the morning was the routine. There is an incredible golf course right around the corner, and Crosslake is a great place to walk around and check out for the day. But.......it was really hard to leave the cabin even for a few hours. It was total relaxation. Everyone had an incredible time - Thank you a thousand times over to Ruth and Fred (Fred - we hope your feeling better!) for opening your oasis to our family. This was an incredible week and we hope we will be able to return again!!

Owner response:Matt, Molly and Louie, We are pleased you enjoyed your vacation at our cabin. It's our pleasure to share this property with people who appreciate nature, quiet and relaxation. Thank you! Ruth & Fred

Wonderful Secluded Cabin On Peaceful Lake!

Guest: Mary F.
Date of Stay: 07/01/11 Review Submitted: 07/13/11

For our first time renting a cabin, I don't think we could of found a more perfect and beautiful place. The cabin was well prepared with everything we could possibly need. It was clean, comfortable and spacious. It really exceeded our expectations! Waking up in the sunroom above the boat house to see the glass on the lake and hear the loons and birds was awesome! The lake was perfect for pontooning, swimming and fishing. The pontoon rental with such a reasonable rate was an added bonus. Allowing dogs is what drew us to your cabin and within very little time, they both became lake dogs. We had 7 adults in the cabin and everyone had their own place to stay. What a blessing your property was for our family to meet. Thank you Ruth and Fred for your hospitality and for allowing us a wonderful week of vacation at you peaceful and secluded cabin on Kego Lake!

Owner response:We strive to satisfy our guests expectations, but the cabin and setting does most of it for us. We're glad you enjoyed your stay and appreciate your work in leaving the cabin much like you found it. Hope to see you again. Ruth & Fred

Relaxing & Tranquil Vacation

Guest: Deb (Sartell, MN)
Date of Stay: 06/24/11 Review Submitted: 07/15/11

We have stayed in many cabin lake rentals and this is by far the #1 best cabin rental!!!! The old log charm makes it so cozy and warm. It's exactly what you see in the pictures and better! Everything was exceptionally clean and organized. Fred & Ruth could not have been more accommodating. Listening to the Loons and watching the beautiful sunsets is just breathtaking. Watching the turtle bury her eggs was definitely one of the highlights of the week. Thank you Fred & Ruth for sharing your beautiful cabin with us, we hope to be back again next summer!

Owner response:We are glad you enjoyed your stay in one of nature's finest settings. We appreciate your kind words and look forward to your return. Ruth & Fred

1st Visit of 2011

Guest: Rick (Red Wing, MN)
Date of Stay: 05/26/11 Review Submitted: 06/10/11

Our 1st 2011 visit was over Memorial Day weekend. Once again, the cabin and grounds were perfect. Total relaxation including some golf, fishing, dining and generally being kicked back. The lake was very clear and the fishing was good (catch & release). Our host could not have had the cabin better prepared and ready for our arrival. Always a great experience when we come here. Our next visit is in mid-June and can't wait to return.

Owner response:Return guests, there is no better reassurance that we must be doing something right. We do occassionally have oversights, so if you draw our attention to imperfections, we'll do our best to correct things in a timely manner. We appreciate the care and consideration taken while visiting our cabin retreat. Thank you again for keeping us in your vacation plans. We look forward to seeing you again very soon. Ruth & Fred

Cozy lakeside retreat

Guest: Seclusion seekers (S. Mpls.)
Date of Stay: 05/20/11 Review Submitted: 05/24/11

Well cared for and superior hospitality, this cabin on Kego lake is a wonderful private getaway. Rustic looking and very comfortable. The listing for this rental is quite extensive and very accuarate. The view from inside and out is beautiful. The call of loons, watching fish and a family of swimming turtles are among other positive unlisted features. Despite there only being two of us it was easy to see how it could accomodate six comfortably. We would recommend this cabin and the caretakers for a positive lakeside getaway.

Ultimate Vacation

Guest: Robin (Eagan, Mn. US)
Date of Stay: 07/24/10 Review Submitted: 07/31/10

Peaceful and serene is an understatement when describing this beautiful vacation spot. There's nothing better than waking up to the sound of the loons and relaxing by the fire watching the sun set. I thank my son for finding this wonderful place. Ruth and Fred are definitely the hostess with the mostess, they are so accomodating and very eager to make your stay memorable. We especially enjoyed hearing about the history of this cabin it makes you appreciate it even more. The cabin was exactly as the pictures project, very clean and spacious with everything you need. The lake is awsome, not too big and not too small and great for fishing. Our boys loved canoeing to the little island and venturing out to explore. There is so many wonderful things I could say about this place but you need to experience it for yourself to get the full affect. I am so excited to come back next year. Thank you Ruth and Fred for making our stay AWSOME!!!

Owner response:Robin, We are glad you, Bill and family had a nice time while staying at our cabin. We wish to acknowledge and thank you for taking the time to clean and leave the cabin as you found it. We look forward to your next visit. Ruth & Fred

Fantastic getaway

Guest: leslie (Minneapolis)
Date of Stay: 07/05/10 Review Submitted: 07/10/10

The cabin blew us away with its charm. It was super clean and comfortable -- it even has a washer and dryer! It is very secluded, as we couldn't see any other nearby residences, making it easy to let our wet dogs remain off leash as they followed us from dock to cabin and back. The lake was the perfect temperature and seemed full of fish judging by all the catches we witnessed during our stay, and heading out on the provided pontoon boat was an added benefit.

Owner response:Glad you and your dogs enjoyed your stay. We try to stay scarce and let you enjoy yourselves and the sounds of nature. One of us is usually down the shore if you need us, and we welcome you to stop by. We look forward to your next visit. Ruth & Fred

Amazing Weekend

Guest: kruge069 (Richfield, MN)
Date of Stay: 06/25/10 Review Submitted: 06/28/10

Having been to Kego before, I knew it was going to be a blast, but honestly I forgot just great it was last year. I was there with my fiance's family and all of us slept comfortably every night. The cabin certainly feels bigger than the descriptions given. Most of the weekend we spent fishing this year, and I highly recommend at least giving it a shot off the dock if not off a boat. We caught several largemouth bass and sunfish and even a nice northern. There was nothing quite as peaceful as a nighttime boat ride either which we took one night (it was a full moon and the stars were everywhere). When not fishing, we just enjoyed all the area in and around the cabin to sprawl and just have great conversation or read. A cabin like this is perfect for just about anyone that wants peace and comfort on a lake. And the owners (Ruth and Fred) are wonderful people and incredibly helpful. Thanks for a great weekend, and looking forward to it next year...and maybe for my honeymoon too? Becky K

Family and Friend Vacation of a Lifetime

Guest: Daniel Ralph (Richfield, MN)
Date of Stay: 06/25/10 Review Submitted: 06/27/10

I went up to gorgeous Kego Lake with my parents, fiance, brother, and brother's girlfriend. The six of us had a most amazing weekend. The description on this website understates the quality of the cabin and what to expect. It is amazing! No TV or internet required for fun up here (though they do have them). We went fishing both days and had some amazing catches, thanks to Fred's wonderful suggestions for the fishing holes and areas to troll for the Northern. All in all, we took home two containers full of Sunny, Northern, and Bass meat! And when not fishing, the area has some great spots for a jog, hike, or walking a dog! So beautiful with the peaceful wildlife all around you both on the lake and in the woods. The nights aren't boring either. Each night was spent either around a campfire sharing stories and smiles, or around the kitchen table playing board games with beverages. Even though there were six of us in this "one bedroom" cabin, we never felt cramped. Each couple had their own bed and basically their own room. There is plenty of space to lounge and relax, and even the pontoon that they let us use had plenty of space when we went out fishing. All in all, I can't think of a better place for a great Minnesota experience. This cabin encompasses all that is great about the state. A beautiful, natural lake with the lovely environment all around you. Gracious hosts who encourage you to share time with your family and friends, and who are more than willing to share a piece of advice or a story themselves. I know this place will be a regular summer spot for our family.

Owner response:Thank you for these kind words. We have felt this way for years, but we're possibly prejudiced. We also appreciate your respect and care of the premises during your stay. It makes our preparation for the next guests easier and motivates us to "keep renting". This was not your first visit and we know it won't be your last. We already have your family's 2011 "confirmed" reservation on our calendar. We look forward to hosting your family again. Ruth & Fred

Awesome Summer Get Away

Guest: Kevin (Elk River, MN)
Date of Stay: 06/20/10 Review Submitted: 08/02/10

Our family stayed at this cabin the end of June of this year, it exceeded my expectations. Our 3 girls (ages 10,8,8) wanted to stay longer. The cabin was clean and had everything in it you could possibly want or need. There were several items we brought along but would not have needed. The two swingsets were a bonus for our girls. The lake was very clean. We got lots of sunnies right off the dock along with many perch and bass. We would not hesitate to go back and our daughters would love to return to the cabine It was so peaceful and relaxing. Fred and Ruth are extremely kind and helpful. Thanks for sharing your cabin with us, it was a great family vacation.

Owner response:We are pleased that you and your family enjoyed your vacation. We can't control the weather, but we can and do keep the cabin clean and stocked. Thank you.

Summer Visit 2010

Guest: Rick (Red Wing, MN)
Date of Stay: 06/19/10 Review Submitted: 07/05/10

Just completed our 2nd visit of 2010. Perfect weather and pretty good fishing. Cabin was perfect- as always. If you are in to quiet living on a great lake, this is the place. Everything you need is nearby- golf, dining, horseback riding, etc. As good as the Norway Ridge Restaurant is, it's hard to beat dinner cooked on the Weber grill, though. Anxiously awaiting our next visit this fall.

Owner response:Rick, We appreciate your family's loyalty and respect for the property. You and your family are welcome any time. We look forward to seeing you in September. Ruth & Fred

Wonderful Cabin!

Guest: Sandy (Omaha, NE, USA)
Date of Stay: 06/12/10 Review Submitted: 06/27/10

If you are looking for a wonderful cabin in Northern Minnesota, this is the place. The cabin has everything you need including a washer and dryer. The cabin is very secluded on a beautiful lake. The lake had 3 boats on it the entire week. My nephew caught and released 4 nice fish in 5 minutes right off the dock! If you don't have a boat, they have a basic pontoon to rent for $100 for a week! If you've rented a boat in the past, you will know that the rate is great! Nothing fancy, but it floats and the motor runs! We took our dogs with us and I was so surprised how clean the cabin was. Our dogs were off their leashes the entire week. The cabin is located about 4 city blocks off a very rarely traveled road. Don't worry ladies, there is wonderful shopping 10 miles away! There is a large grocery store, clothing stores, tourist type stores and a wonderful pizza place (Raffertys). We went in to town a few times just to eat! They had regular pizza and some very unusual pizza combinations. They were great! I wish we had a Raffertys in my home town! Golf and minature golf are also available. Ruth and Fred are wonderful hosts. They give you the privacy you want and are there if you need them. Eagles and loons are always around. The eagles will dive down to catch a fish right in front of you if you sit on the dock. Wonderful experience! I was going through some difficult times in my life and this was the vacation I needed to sort things out. Thank you Ruth and Fred!!! We will be back!!!

Owner response:We were a little concerned renting to people with 3 (big) dogs, but when we went to clean, there was no dog hair in the cabin! We know that the people who take their pet(s) on vacation take care of them and the property they stay at. We're glad you had an enjoyable time during your stay. Welcome back any time!! Ruth & Fred

What a WONDERFUL place, and the hosts could not have been any nicer. Our only regret was that we had to leave. The cabin has everything you could want from laundry to seclusion from the outside world. I would rate this as one of the top vacation spots we have been to and we definitely want to come back, only next time it will be for a longer time. Thank you Ruth & Fred for opening up your "hideaway" for others to enjoy. Mike & Terry Fitch Kelly & Jane Naslund Nebraska

Rest and Relaxation

Date of Stay: 09/08/09 Review Submitted: 09/23/09

My husband, 10 month old son, dog and I stayed at this cabin for a week. Everything exceeded our expectations. The cabin was very clean, had all amenities listed, everything was in working order and all in all it was a home away from home. We had plenty of room and could have easily shared the cabin with another small family. On site laundry was a huge bonus! Hosts were outstanding and available for all our questions and needs. They are great! I'd classify this as a two bedroom cabin, although by looking at the next comment, I see why it has to be called a one bedroom. Plenty of room at this cabin though! Fishing is great, hiking is good, lake was very nice and quiet when we were there. Local golf is good too. It was very nice to be within 15 minutes of a town with a grocery store, especially with an infant. this was a very peaceful and relaxing vacation that lives up to its description and we have no complaints. We plan to return- we all had a great time! Grade A+++++!

Owner response:When we travel we expect to get what is described and clean so we try to provide the same experience for our guests. Ruth & Fred

Guest: trident (Portsmouth, England)
Date of Stay: 06/26/09 Review Submitted: 06/29/09

Wildlife, hospitality, serenity, peace just about describe this place. Eagles, ospreys, deer, loons and so much more. Did I mention the fishing? We are townies but revelled in the tranquility of Kego Lake. One of about 15,000 lakes we believe but it was wonderful. We still believe though that NZ's trout are the best! Don't believe the 'brochure' though - there are two bedrooms although I think Ruth described the one looking over the lake as the 'porch'. We Kiwis have trouble with the language. Marvellous stay - oh yes! Just to prove it we extended our stay until the next guests arrived.

Owner response:We are thoroughly enjoying the fact that others are able to appreciate our 'special' get-away retreat as much as we do. Our 'porch' or 'sun room' does make a lovely bedroom, however, with no closet we cannot classify it as a 'bedroom'. It is the preferred room to sleep for all who stay at the cabin. (PS: NZ Trout = New Zealand Trout.) Ruth and Fred

My son (27) and I stayed over the Labor Day weekend. I was joined by my wife the last few days. Weather was perfect, fishing and golfing a-okay. As always, when you book a place you have never seen before, you are a bit nervous. Well, Ruth & Fred's cabin exceeded all my expectations. Neat, clean, private and in excellent working order. The cabin has great old log character along with new & modern conveniences. I have vacationed in this area for ~30 years and will return to this cabin. Very happy with my decision to stay here!

What a wonderful stay! I relished the quiet, being tucked away in the woods, and being so near the lake. Stunningly Beautiful. Your search is over... We stayed at the cabin Memorial Weekend and found the place to be absolutely wonderful. This is a real log cabin nestled in the woods very near the water and totally secluded. The peace and quite along with the stunning sunsets makes this place our most favorite. The cabin has all the comforts of home including satelite TV. Although we spent most our time sitting outside listening to the birds and wildlife and just plain relaxing. There is no better place to spend time away from all the noise and busy life styles we face. Fred and Ruth are great hosts and always there should you need them. We want to sincerely thank you for sharing your slice of Heaven with us.

Owner response:We are fortunate to own this property and we enjoy sharing it with others who appreciate it's natural qualities. We look forward to your return. Ruth & Fred Strohmeier

I had an 0pportunity to visit this property with two of my dearest friends a couple of summers ago just to get away and catch up with them. The setting could not have been more beautiful. Anyone who has ever gone "up north" for their vacation will definitely appreciate the experience. One night stands out after fresh fish were caught and prepared while we sat around the fire reminiscing. Don't miss a great restaurant in town where they serve walleye and wild rice as you will not find any where else. Sorry, I can't remember the name of the place, but guess what...it was on a lake.

Owner response:Our setting is unique and one great place to reconnect with old friends. We hope your experience is as endearing. Ruth & Fred

WOW! AMAZING! If you are looking for a secluded real log cabin with the ammenities of home then this will be for you. The sounds of the Loons will put you to bed and the sunrise on the lake will greet you when you awake. If you choose to sleep in the sunroom, as my wife and I did, you will be rewarded with an outstanding view of the lake from bed. My daughter chose to sleep in the master bedroom as it is fit for a queen, or in this case a princess. My son slept in the bedroom in the main part of the cabin. These arrangments were nice as we could arise whenever, without disturbing each other. We had a fabulous time fishing, swimming, hiking and just relaxing. You can spend many hours watching the hummingbirds race to and fro in search of their next snack. Bring your binochulars to search the islands on the lake for Bald eagles or even better yet take your boat and explore them. There is an abundance of wildlife to be seen. You could bring a DVD to watch and listen to through the excellent sound system, but I doubt you will want to waste anytime watching TV as you will be soaking in the beauty of the cabin and its surroundings. I cannot explain in words how wonderful a vacation we had at the cabin. It was a fantastic experience for my teenage children as well as for my wife and I. I think my children were surprised to find that they were not bored, even without all of their electronic gizmos that everyone seems to "need" nowdays. If you do feel a need for a trip to town there are several within a short distance for all of your needs and the scenery along the way is great. The owners are super people and we are very thankful to them for allowing us to stay in such a wonderful place. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! Everyone should experience this.

Owner response:Thank you Jeff and Tami. You were ideal guests for us and left the cabin impeccably clean as well as leaving us some fun and creative thank you notes. We look forward to your return. Ruth & Fred Strohmeier

I stayed in the Strohmeier's cabin last year and had one of the most relaxing vacations ever. The cabin is magnificient - it is so comfortable - all the amenities that I have at my home plus the beautiful lake. I loved the quiet. The birds only woke me up in the morning. The call of the loons is something that I could listen to all day while reading and sunning myself. I look forward to going back again and again.

You will want to return to Kego. I drive through the tunnel of trees in anticipation. There it is, the light at the end of the tree tunnel, a beautiful, secluded, private log cabin. Get away from the fast pace of the rat race. Stay at Kego. What do I see... From the outside, a beautiful real log cabin perched on the edge of a lovely lake. Inside, all the comforts of home, modern full bathroom with jacuzzi tub, surround sound, DVD, Satellite TV, enough sleeping for 8 or 10. I recommend sleeping in the sunroom above the boat house. Walk to the end of the room, look down, and see the ripples of the lake lapping at the shore. Look out and see the two islands on the lake. Magnificent views of the sun rays melting the mist on the lake are provided in the early morning from the bed in this room. The main room in the cabin looks like a log cabin should look. The back bedroom is as modern as modern can be. The side bedroom just off the main room is comfy and rustic. We love the cabin but spend most of our time outside. Sitting in the gazebo, in the yard by the fire pit, or on the dock are all great relaxation spots. We like hiking through the woods, boating, fishing, swimming and just taking it easy. Just take it easy. No neighbors, barking dogs or traffic, just privacy, peace and quiet. This property is everything and more than one could expect. Whether you are the Jetsons or the Flintstones you will feel at home here. The owners Ruth and Fred are fantastic people and are more than accommodating. We want to return to Kego. Tami, Jeff and family

Owner response:The stay was September, 2009. Although we cannot guarantee good weather, we take every opportunity to provide private, comfortable, clean accommodations.
