Casita Los Colibris: Right 2/3rds of Top Floor,(Casita Golondrinas, on left)
Location: Centro, San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Central Mexico, Mexico (3.5 hours NW of Mexico City; 1.5 hours from Leon Airport)
Accommodations: Apartment, 1 Bedroom + Detached Unit, 1 Bath (Sleeps 2-4)
This beautiful hillside home has two apartments on the top floor. Casita de Las Golondrinas is on the left, behind the balcony and Casita de Los Colibris is on the right. They may each (or both) be rented with La Mariposita, a king-sized bedroom and bath (with rudimentary kitchen--refrigerator, microwave, coffee makers--no TV or phone) across the entrance patio from Los Colibris. The one-bedroom apartments, Las Golodrinas and Los Colibris, can be rented separately or together, as there is a connecting door leading to the balcony of Las Golondrinas. Each apartment (and La Mariposita, too) has a separate outside entrance, however. The owners live downstairs, so are always around if you need something. Below is a description of Casita de Los Colibris (The Hummingbirds). A description and availability calendar for Las Golondrinas (The Swallows) can be viewed at VRBO #1122.
Located just a ten-minute walk to the Jardin (the town center), the Casita Los Colibris has a bird's eye view of San Miguel's church spires, house-studded hills, tile roofs and green valley, masses of purple-flowering jacaranda trees, as well as a broad vista of the distant mountains of Guanajuato.
Comfortable furnishings: This snug aerie (about 850 sq.ft.)is perfect for one or two. There's a king-sized bed (or two twins, if you prefer) in the 18-foot-long bedroom that looks out on the green hillside through three south-facing, arched windows. You can see the Parroquia (cathedral) from the bed... Furnishings are casual, covered in native fabrics; curtains are hand-woven cotton. The living/dining area has exposures on 3 sides with a view from the dining room table, of the Parroquia Church nestled in the valley below. Couches (one of which is a double hideabed) and chairs, plus a wall of closets behind custom-made wood doors, a gas heater, and TV (cable TV with English-speaking channels) and small stereo complete the furnishings. Orginal paintings adorn the walls and handicrafts ornaments and hand-woven textiles and pillows accent the furnishings.
The compact kitchen has tile counters, custom cabinetry, hand-painted dishes, pots and pans, coffee maker, microwave, the toast-oven and a refrigerator and stove; the bath has a deep-soaking tub (with shower) surrounded by colorful tiled walls, and with punched-tin light fixtures and custom-made wood cabinetry.
Ample private terraces: Los Colibris is on the second floor, approached by an outside staircase with a railing. An entry terrace with umbrella table and chairs provides al fresco dining. Up a short flight of steps is a roof-top terrace with amazing 360-degree views. The upper terrace is furnished with cocktail table and chairs.

Services: The maid comes twice a week to clean up, and tend to the sheets and towels. She will do laundry in the owner's machine for US $5.00 a load, and ironing for $5.00 an hour. The gardener comes 3 times a week to care for the potted plants. He can also help with outside jobs, if you have any. There is a private phone, as well as a wireless Internet for your laptop.

Terrific location: The Botanical Garden (great for an evening stroll beside the lake, an early morning jog on gravel paths, or bird-watching) is just a fifteen-minute walk away. The new mall, with a large supermarket, banks, a department store, specialty shops andf restaurants (sushi, Chinese, Italian coffee shop, even a MacDonalds!) is a 35-minute walk (take a taxi back for the equivalent of $2.00). Academia Hispana, a Spanish-language school, is just a five-minute walk, as is La Puertecita restaurant and hotel. The central Jardin, with restaurants, shops and museums is 10 minutes' walk down (20 minutes' back up--excellent built-in aerobic exercise!). A small spa with swimming pool and exercise room is available a 5-minute walk away. They charge approximately US$80 a month, or $5.50 a day/person.
The owners/builders: Judy Arnold and David Hernandez have built their house plus three apartments in a lovely location... Gardens surround their tranquil home. David is a native of San Miguel, while Judy arrived 25 years ago, and still loves it here.
Option: The two apartments (check out the other at VRBO #1122) can be rented together, if they are available, for a 2 bedroom, 2 bath place which sleeps up to 4 (or six if you count the hideabed). Or there is now a separate bedroom and bath, La Mariposita, across the back patio (20 steps)to Los Colibris. Check with the owner for availability and cost. Also check availability calendars on the two webpages.
