Casita Los Catorros: Private Roof top terrace, views south-west over town
Location: Centro, San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Central Mexico, Mexico (3.5 hours NW of Mexico City; 1.5 hours from Leon Airport)
Accommodations: Apartment, 2 Bedrooms + Detached Unit, 2 Baths (Sleeps 4-6)
This beautiful hillside home has two apartments on the top floor. A one-bedroom apartment, Casita de Las Golondrinas, is on the left on the photograph, behind the balcony (see VRBO #1122). VRBO #13455, a two-bedroom, two-bath apartment called Casita Los Catorros, is on the right. (This apartment may be rented separately as one-bedroom, one-bath unit--formerly called Casita Los Colibris (see guests' comments and rate schedule below).
Located just a ten-minute walk to the Jardin (the town center), the Casita Los Catorros ("The Parrots") has a bird's-eye view of San Miguel's church spires, house-studded hills to the East, tile roofs and green valley, masses of purple-flowering jacaranda trees, as well as a broad vista of the distant mountains of Guanajuato from the private roof terrace. You can also see houses of the up-scale Atascadero part of town further uphill, as well as the Los Picachos ("The Peaks") to the East.
Comfortable furnishings: This snug aerie (about 1000 sq.ft.) is perfect for two couples, because the second bedroom/bath is totally removed, 20 steps across the entrance patio, with its own private entrance.
There are two king-sized bedrooms (or each with two twins beds, if you prefer). The master is an 18-foot-long bedroom that looks out on the green hillside through three south-facing, arched windows. You can see the downtown Parroquia (cathedral) from the bed... The second bedroom across the entrance patio has a sunroom facing south and you can see trees and flowers in the back yard, as well as the trees and greenery of the hills and Los Picachos. Furnishings to the two bedrooms are casual, with "equipale" (rustic wood chairs)covered in native fabrics, curtains are hand-woven cotton, native hand-carved wood bedsteads, original paintings, serigraphs and native handicrafts. The second bedroom has its own bathroom with closet, a gas heater, as well as a small refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker in the sunroom.
The living/dining area has exposures on 3 sides with a view from the dining room table of the Parroquia Church nestled in the valley below. Couches (one of which is a double hideabed) and chairs, plus a wall of closets behind custom-made wood doors, a gas heater, and TV (cable TV with English-speaking channels) and small stereo complete the furnishings. Orginal paintings adorn the walls and handicrafts ornaments and hand-woven textiles and pillows accent the furnishings.
The compact kitchen has tile counters, custom cabinetry, hand-painted dishes, pots and pans, coffee maker, microwave, the toast-oven and a refrigerator and stove; the master bath has a deep-soaking tub (with shower) surrounded by colorful tiled walls, and with punched-tin light fixtures and custom-made wood cabinetry. The second bathroom has a colorful sink, 5 foot mirror and shower enclosure.
Ample private terraces: Los Catorros is on the second floor, approached by an outside staircase with a railing. The second bedroom has it's own private little terrace and entry on to entry patio. There, an umbrella table and chairs provides al fresco dining. Up a short flight of steps is the private roof-top terrace with amazing 360-degree views. The upper terrace is furnished with cocktail table and chairs. And there are dozens of plants to the entrance stairways, patio and roof terrace, with a gardener to take care of them!
.
Services: Our trusted maid, Remedios, comes twice a week to clean up, and tend to the sheets and towels. She will do the guests' personal laundry in the owner's machine for 60 pesos (US $5.00) a load (as long as the guests furnish laundry soap), and ironing for US$5.00 an hour. The gardener comes 3 times a week to care for the potted plants. There is a private phone, as well as a wireless Internet for your laptop, a cable TV, and two small radio/CD players.
Please check the availability by clicking on the little calendar icon, below.
Terrific location: The Botanical Garden (great for an evening stroll beside the lake, an early morning jog on gravel paths, or bird-watching) is just a fifteen-minute walk away (entrance fee). The new mall, with a large supermarket, banks, a department store, specialty shops and restaurants (sushi, Chinese, Mexican, Italian coffee shop, even a MacDonalds!) is a 35-minute walk (take a taxi back for the equivalent of US $2.00). Academia Hispana, a Spanish-language school, is just a five-minute walk--at the head of Calle Mesones. The closest restaurant is La Puertecita at the hotel five minutes walk up (away from town) from the Arcos on Santo Domingo. The central Jardin, with restaurants, shops and museums is 10 minutes' walk down (20 minutes' walk back up--excellent built-in aerobic exercise!). A small spa with swimming pool and exercise room is available a 5-minute walk towards town. They charge approximately US$80 a month/person, or $5.00 a day/person.
The owners/builders: Judy Arnold and David Hernandez have built their house plus two apartments in a lovely location... Gardens surround their tranquil home and a sparkling fountain is in front patio. David is a native of San Miguel, while Judy arrived 25 years ago, and still loves it here.
Option: The two apartments (check out the other at VRBO #1122) can be rented together, if they are available, to form a 3 bedroom, 3 bath place (with 2 living rooms and two kitchens) which sleeps up to 6 (or 8 if you count the hideabed). Check with the owner for availability and cost. Also check availability calendars on the two webpages.

We just loved staying here. We just had to stop by for one last look at the view from the upstairs roof terrace. It's spectacular. And of course, watching the humming birds at the feeder is much more fun than watching TV!

We left our heart in San Miguel. We had a magical time. We appreciate your warm hospitality and are making plans to return next June.

We really enjoyed staying here and can't wait to return to San Miguel de Allende... November, 2002

I can truly say that I've enjoyed every minute that I've spent in this lovely second-floor apartment... it is bright and cheerful, with sunlight streaming in from all four directions, as well as a large skylight. There are pleasant views out of every window. And the bathtub! What a delight: looking out into a tree, with birds hopping among the branches almost every time I bathe... Lucky you, if you are able to come and stay here.
