Location: Bakersville, Blue Ridge Mountains, North Carolina, USA (One Hour Outside Asheville) View Map
Accommodations: House, 2 Bedrooms + Loft, 4 Baths (Sleeps 8)
Keywords: House
Desirable, peaceful mountain house nestled between the Appalachian Trail and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Approximately four miles North of Bakersville, this getaway perched on a mountainside offers a year round view of the Roan Mountain and twenty miles beyond the NC border into Tennesee.
Enjoy your morning coffee listening to the birds, counting the wild turkeys or grilling the evening meal while watching the evening sunset. Inside, you will notice the exquisite custom woodwork milled from trees grown on the property.
Nearby is the Penland Center, many local artisans, tubing, fishing and of course, hiking the Appalachian Trail. Local towns close to Bakersville are Spruce Pine and Burnsville. An hour away is Asheville to the south or Boone and Banner Elk to the north.
The custom designed and built house has two bedrooms, a loft, a basement and four full baths. The entry way is lined with maple logs and an inlaid floor. The floors are ash, locust and tile; the ceilings are popular, wormy maple, cedar, and pine. All the doors are custom made solid cherry. Finishing off the interior are windows offering a panoramic view trimmed in solid cherry.
Two decks perched high above the property allow you to take in the beautiful views day and night, summer and winter. Framing the deck is a custom railing, built by a Bakersville blacksmith, supported by aged locust logs. The huge stone retaining walls and field stone foundation and chimney compliment this unique design and firmly anchor the house to the mountainside.
The family room has a large field stone fireplace with a cherry mantel, custom built from the first cherry tree cut and milled from the property during construction. This large 36’ by 18’ room has more than enough room for a couple of families to relax and enjoy each other’s company.
The master bedroom has a king bed with adjoining bath, equipped with walk in shower, soaking tub and two cedar vanities. This large bedroom is appointed with a love seat, and television yet still has enough floor space for the futon and little ones, if the loft is taken with the big kids.
The guest bedroom has a queen mattress and adjoins the main bathroom. The main bath includes a custom built cherry vanity and large shower/tub unit.
The kitchen has custom-built hickory cabinets with granite tile countertops. The fully equipped kitchen also offers a view of the Roan Mountain making the preparation of meals a joy.
The spiral staircase takes you up to the loft that includes its own bath with a shower. The four twin beds and full size futon make this room a child’s paradise. Parents can keep an ear on them while enjoying their own private time on the back porch or family room.
The laundry room is nestled between the family room and the main bath for easy access. The basement is currently unfinished but has a usable fourth-full bathroom where a large walk-in shower makes this room great for cleaning up after a day of enjoying the river or hiking the woods.

Great October weekend

We stayed at the house Oct 28-30, 2011 and had a wonderful getaway with our 12 and 14 year old girls. The views are incredible - even better than the pictures. The house has lots of charm and I would echo the other reviewers comments about it being well-equipped. The master bed was extremely comfortable with great sheets and pillows. There was lots of firewood on the porch and we enjoyed cozying up by the fireplace in the evening and watching a movie or playing games. We went to the zipline in Plumtree on Saturday (about 35-40 minutes away) and had a great outing and meal afterward (included in the zipline package). After we left on Sunday, we hiked Linville Falls, which is not far and in the general direction of returning home to Charlotte. If you are travelling in the winter, snow tubing is nearby also. All in all, this is just what we were looking for - privacy, views and some quality family time together. We loved it and would definitely returen.

My wife and I stayed there with my my two sisters and their husbands the week of 10-17-10, and we could not have stayed in a better place to enjoy the NC mountains. As amazing as the views appear in the photos, they do not do this site justice - it's incredible! Beautiful sunsets over almost a dozen ridges, and we even watched a full moon set over Bakersville one morning - awesome photo opps! The house is extremely well furnished and provisioned with lots of extras that you don't normally find in a rental, and it is very comfortable and enjoyable. If you stay there take a couple of hours to just mozy around some of the side roads between the house and Bakersville - beautiful vistas & bucholic scenes. I cannot recommend this house enough. Only one suggestion: Confirm your arrival with the B&B owner a couple of days before your arrival, but then call him again the AM of your arrival so he won't forget about you... but when you get you get there you'll be glad you did!!!

This place is awesome. The pictures do not do it justice. We have rented many, many, cabins over the years this one is by far the best. It is not a cabin, it is a HOME, with all the comforts. Being from FL., we lucked out and got snow! We built a fire in the fireplace every evening, played games, watched movies(plenty of them there.) I was never so content just to do nothing! It was so relaxing, and that's just what we wanted to do! We are looking forward to going back maybe in the spring or summer and opening up all the beautiful windows. Thanks for making it pet friendly also.I wish I was there right now!! Thank you for sharing your home. The Zwick Family

This house was just as the pictures show....and still much more. It was fabulous! The owner was very nice to work with, the house had all the comforts of home, and it sure was hard to leave on our last day. It is quite secluded, but the view from the deck, overlooking the valleys below, was amazing. It is totally quiet at night, but you awaken to the most beautiful chorus of bird songs in the morning. We look forward to being able to use this beautiful house again!

We stayed Jan 16-21, 2009 in this BEAUTIFUL house! It is TRUELY wonderful. We had a BIG snow storm on the 19th. Our bulldog LOVED it, so did we. The owners have really out done themselves in making this a home away from home. We hope to be lucky enough to stay at this LOVELY home in the future. THANKS AGAIN Mary!!!

November 7, 2008 The house is simply beautiful. Everything about it just enhances the peaceful setting. One beautiful hike is very close on the AT where it crosses NC 261.

April 25 - 27, 2008: We had a wonderful time!!! Every night we were there, we were lucky enough to have clear skies so that we can sit on the porch and gaze at the skies. The cabin was amazing, peaceful, and wonderful. We cant wait to get back there!!!

Thanks for sharing your beautiful mountain retreat with us. Your place is simply amazing. The cool crisp air, the away from it all feel, the massive fire place, the huge ridge in the backyard, the stars. I could go on and on. We had a phenomenal time and look forward to spending more time there.

Oh, this place was fabulous, like being in heaven!! We loved it! It was very secluded yet had everything we needed right there. The views were spectacular, and the hiking at Roan Mountain was some of the best we've done. And Bakersville was such a cute little town--what personality! Our stay was fantastic, and we can't wait to go again.
