Maison de Camille is an old stone house situated in an idyllic peaceful hamlet on a plateau high above the renowned Dordogne River Valley - in a region famous for truffles, 1001 chateaux, foie gras, walnuts, caves, gastronomique cuisine, fantastic scenery and postcard-perfect villages, all on a direct train route between Paris (4.5 hrs) & Toulouse (1.5 hrs).
The property sits along a quiet lane in a high position, with charming outbuildings including a wooden tobacco barn (used by the neighbor for his hay), and a stone bread oven on nearly 1-1/2 acres of garden, fruit and walnut trees, yet is perfectly central to the best the region has to offer. Full of soul, the house is beautifully furnished almost entirely in quality antiques and linens, and exudes a rustic authentic charm. 2 of the 3 bedrooms offer beautiful views over the countryside and much of the house retains the original wood floors. Certain times of the year you will see a new flock of lambs or sheep grazing in a steeply sloped meadow bordered by poppies just across the lane. The large farmhouse kitchen w/cantou is well stocked with dishes, wine glasses, cookware and innumerable staple items for the convenience of guests.
Restaurants/Shopping: 3 gastronomique restaurants at the Chateau de la Treyne near Pinsac, the chateau hotel in Meyronne, and at Pont de l'Ouysse in Lacave, are all less than 10km away, but there are ample options for every budget at Souillac, Martel, St. Sozy, and Cales all at an easy distance. The front terrasse of the house, under the vines, is also an ideal spot to enjoy dinner and wine with friends, long into the late summer night. All services are in the busy market town of Souillac (7km) with its Romanesque Abbey, colorful Friday morning markets and annual jazz festival. Additional major towns are Sarlat and Gourdon and the city of Brive is about 25 min. to the north. Fresh milk is available down the lane from a local dairy farmer. In the late spring, the most incredible white, purple or green asparagus can be obtained from local farmers.
For those who prefer to avoid the tourist sites and simply relax, the house enjoys beautiful sunlight all day long (save for the occasional spectacular thunderstorms) until the early evening casts an intoxicating glow on the stone walls, the trees and surrounding countryside, beckoning an early evening stroll to the Roc de Monges viewpoint over the river or the path to view Chateau Belcastel. There are several listed walks (GR routes) in the region, and a day on a rented canoe or a swim in the river are very close at hand down the hill. Or pull up the chaise under the walnut tree overlooking the farmland, with a glass of rose and a book for a lazy afternoon. La France profonde!
