The Bearcub Chalet, built in 2001, is a beautiful 3 bedroom, 4 bathroom "A-frame" mountain home with large recreation room, loft and redwood deck with spa. Situated on a hillside in the midst of tall pines at Blue Lake Springs resort in Arnold (elevation 4000 feet) near Calaveras Big Trees State Park, it is easily accessible by a level driveway even in snow.

The resort's facilities at Snowflake Lodge, which is a two-minute walk from the chalet, include tennis, basketball and volleyball courts. During the summer the pool, snack bar and a lake with a sandy beach are open for a small daily fee.

Outdoor movies and children's supervised arts and crafts programs are available from May to September. On weekends all year round the restaurant offers excellent dining open exclusively to residents and renters of the community. Reservations advised.

We offer special rates in the Fall for concerts at Ironstone Vineyards and fall harvest season. The cabin is only 20 minutes from Murphy's, which now boasts many tasting rooms for the wonderful award winning local wineries.

Bear Valley ski resort, 20 miles to the east, is known as a family-friendly, lower-cost resort, which offers excellent downhill and cross country skiing for all skill levels. Other popular winter activities are sledding, snowshoeing, snowboarding and snowmobiling.

Activities in the surrounding national forests include fishing, hiking among ancient redwoods, mountain biking on established trails, rafting on the Stanislaus river and canoeing on crystalline lakes. Among other attractions of the area are the famous Moaning and Mercer Caverns, historic Gold Rush towns, winery tours, several golf courses, as well as swimming, boating, fishing and water skiing on the New Melones reservoir.

Why the Owner Chose Arnold

We liked the year round activities. Bear Valley and Arnold have a much quieter feel compared to Lake Tahoe. The town of Murphys keeps getting better and better and there are many wineries in the area as well.

The Unique Benefits at this House

We love being able to walk down to the pool and lake at Snow Flake resort. We also enjoy the convenience of the restaurant on Friday and Saturday nights. Tennis courts are almost always available. We kayak and White Pines Lake is only 10 mins away, and Utica, Union and Spicer reservoirs are less than an hour from our cabin. It is great to be at 4,000 feet elevation as the heavy snow storms usually do not affect us at this level. We are close to Arnold (Sarafina's is the great new restaurant in town) and Murphys is a short trip down the hill.

Owner's Map of Arnold

We live on the Peninsula and are happy that Hwy 205 through Tracy has finally been widened.

Amazing house

I rented the cabin for a retreat for a group of people and everything was amazing. The owner was super easy to work with & helpful, he made everything really simple and really went the extra mile to make the trip a success. The house itself was great, especially the game room and the hot tub. Everything was clean, neat and relatively new. The kitchen had everything you might need and more. The house was very roomy and had a wonderful fireplace. Had a great time here and hope to make it back again!

The right mix for the entire family!

The beautiful house provided the perfect mountain escape! We enjoyed swimming all day, mostly at a nearby lake, White Pines, and then returning to the cabin to play some pool, then ending the day to ease our sore muscles in the spa. We all admired the view from the deck; during the day, the majestic pines, and in the evening the stars were amazing. The listing is accurate and the property very clean and beautiful. The owner was extremely helpful and responded quickly to any questions I had.

Family Reunion

We had a great time at the Bearcub Chalet! We had 8 adults there and 5 kids. The kids were ages 9 on down to 3 and they had a ball at this home. No only did they love playing ping pong and foose ball, but the home had books, toys and videos galore. We were thrilled that we could WALK to the Blue Springs Resort there. The last time we rented at Blue Lake Springs, we had to drive there and being able to walk was just so great. The home was very comfortable for us all. We loved the hot tub and the deck and spent a lot of time out there playing games and visiting. It was really fun. The owner was very helpful, and answered all our questions and concerns. We would definitely rent this home again.

We had a great weekend at the Bearcub Chalet. We were visiting Arnold for a wedding and had Great Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles and Cousins staying together. The cabin had everything we needed for all age groups. We would love to return and make use of the Snowflake Lodge which was easily accessible. Highly recommend!

Yes, happy we picked this one! Bearcub Chalet has it all and is well maintained to boot. Our whole extended family enjoyed our time here. How can you beat being right around the corner from Snowflake Lodge and its ammenities. Our little grandkids much enjoyed the beautiful lake there. Big Trees State Park is about 5 minutes away and not to be missed. The town of Murphys is a must visit too. Bearcub Chalet's layout and the way it is furnished worked out so well. We loved the wonderful decks, the hot tub, the well equipped game room, and much more about this comfortable home away from home. It's a winner!

The Whole Family Loved It

Guest: Lulu (California)
Date of Stay: 07/21/10 Review Submitted: 08/15/10

Our extended family of 11 stayed at the Bear Cub Chalet this summer and had a blast! Big enough for the teens to have a "hang out" space, intimate enough so that we were able to really have a family gathering. The deck is spectacular! We spent all our evenings there. Kids loved the lake and club features, adults loved the large kitchen stocked with the stuff you really need need to make dinners. Very close to town, but we never left! Thanks for a great trip.

Vacation with extended family

Guest: caroline (Redwood City, CA)
Date of Stay: 07/11/10 Review Submitted: 07/24/10

We had a wonderful time in this beautiful cabin with our extended family. We enjoyed the view from the deck, family games, hide and seek, leisurely meals with the BQ outisde, hot tubs under the stars, time in the game room downstairs, etc. Fun places were located nearby and we all had a blast doing the zipline and cave tour. The lake was another fun spot to go as well. I think we found a yearly tradition if we can ever execute it again with everyones schedule!! I'd recommend this rental for others as it was clean and well maintained. It also was close to fun attractions. The Wymans

Snow snow beautiful snow

Guest: CJ2 (Southern California)
Date of Stay: 04/26/09 Review Submitted: 05/05/10

It was my 60th birthday, and not wanting a big fuss, we decided, sight unseen, to aim for Arnold, CA at the suggestion of my daughter-in-law. We chose the Bear Cub Chalet because it was large enough for the children and grandchildren to join us. When it started to snow on Monday night, we were very grateful for the large downstairs recreation room where the kids could hang out, play games and be entertained--since nobody had snow tires or chains!! We were pretty much "snowed in" for Tuesday and Wednesday. Thursday we ventured to Calaveras Big Trees, but it was still questionable weather without personal snow gear, so we headed for lower ground at Murphys where the day was crisp and beautiful and the town charming. Back to Big Trees in the afternoon when the weather was better for a beautiful snowy hike with better shoes. Friday we went to Angel's Camp and enjoyed the most amazing museum of early California stuff. It is a MUST SEE. The kids loved it, the adults had a great time, and the staff at the museum were just thrilled to have us come. Saturday morning we finished with breakfast at Grounds in Murphys--a suggestion in the green binder! It was a good finish.

A Great Family Getaway!!

Guest: Green eyes (Los Altos)
Date of Stay: 04/14/10 Review Submitted: 04/21/10

We had a lovely time at the Bearcub Chalet. It was clean, the kids loved the ping pong, movies, and fuzball. There was plenty of room and so close to so many wonderful adventures-Caleveras, Moaning Caverns, Zip line, Columbia, Sonora, lakes and skiing. The only thing that could've been better was the dryer. It took a long time to dry. We will do it again. Great time!!

Family Fun

Guest: Arnold Fan (Los Altos, CA)
Date of Stay: 04/14/10 Review Submitted: 04/19/10

We enjoyed all the aspects of the Bearcub Chalet from the rec room downstairs to the hot tub. Great location, well appointed for renters to navigate (everything is clearly labeled), went to caves, hiking, biking, walked the golf course, hung out at the lake. We are attached enough to Arnold that we will make it a regular stay. Have 4 kids ages 9 to 2 and they loved it. Perfect place for families. Thanks!
