Private Big Ole Cabin

If you are looking for a Holiday Inn or Hilton you are looking at the wrong place. I have my own ideas of beautiful when it comes to being outdoors. If you see beauty in narrow, gravel roads, surrounded by huge White Pine and a lake so clear you can actually see 12 feet down to those sunfish near the bottom, then you have found the right place!

I am located in the heart of the Chippewa National Forest, where you can enjoy both beauty and privacy. If you come to relax, fish or hunt, you have found the right spot! If you enjoy sitting around an actual campfire roasting marshmallows, watching an eagle fly over head and listening to the sounds of the loons, this is the place for you.

The cabin is in the pines along the shores of scenic Big Ole Lake. Lost in time, this property once served as a resort for fisherman, hunters and families from across the U.S. and Canada. Now it is a private home where guests can escape the hustle and bustle of every day life and experience the joy of relaxing in their own cabin.

Big Ole Lake is a 167 acre, 63 feet deep lake with no public access for launching your boat. If you want to bring your own boat it is carry in access only. The fishing is abundant, offering walleye, crappie, pan fish, northern & premier small & largemouth bass fishing. Your cabin comes with a fishing boat & your own private dock. You can bring your own motor or rent one from me. You also have use of a paddle boat to explore the lake.

There is a regulation horseshoe pit where you can practice on your game and unwind after a day of fishing, hunting or just enjoying the outdoors.

The cabin offers you a place to relax and watch the lake, play some cribbage or cook your own "Catch of the Day". If you prefer to grill and eat outside, your own Charcoal grill and picnic table sits right out the front door. The tongue and groove vaulted ceiling in the kitchen, dining area and living room are all custom made by me, including the cabinets.

The cabin has two bedrooms, each with a comfortable NEW Queen size bed. If you need more room, the couch makes into a full size bed. There is a composting toilet in the cabin and a Bath House with a hot shower just a couple steps from the cabin. Feel free to take a dip off your own private dock, and enjoy the swimming.

If you have more than 6 people in your group, I have another cabin, with a kitchenette, that sleeps 2 to 3 people. If rented with the Big Ole Cabin it is an additional $200.00 per week.

Only 5 miles down the road is Marcell, population 309, which is the hub of the Edge of the Wilderness National Scenic Byway. A township of 56 square miles, it contains all, or part, of 48 lakes. Tourism is Marcell's biggest industry, but has the look and feel of a small town, peace and quiet in the most natural of settings. Marcell offers a lot for a small town, a well equipped bait & sporting good store, Real Estate Office, antique store, lumber yard, gift shop, several restaurants & taverns, food and gas.

Three of us stayed for a week and found the cabin and facilities very accomodating. It is a peaceful place with a view of the lake. The fall colors were just getting going, so very beautiful. The outside shower was not a problem, nor the composting toilet. Very affordable, clean cabin with all the appliances one needs.

Recommended for: Families with teenagers, age 55+, adventure seekers, people with disabilities, sightseeing, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children.

We thoroughly enjoyed our weeklong stay at the cabin on Big Ole Lake. Brian was extremely accommodating and the cabin had a rustic charm. He advertised it correctly, this was not a Holiday Inn but it was very comfortable and had everything we needed for a great fishing vacation. My wife was a little apprehensive about the composting toilet and the shower in an outbuilding but got used to it very quickly. The fishing was great and Brian was as gracious a host as we could have hoped for. We highly recommend this place to anyone who wants a Minnesota northwoods experience.

My wife and I stayed here in September 2009, and liked it so much we rented the small cabin next door as well and brought the entire family and a couple of friends. Both cabins, along with boat, motor, gas, canoe, paddle-boat and a fee for two dogs came to about $1000 for the week. There were six of us total, although my son joined us for a few days as well to make seven, with room to spare. The composting toilet in the main cabin functions very well and is a great environmental alternative to flushing waste underground or into a sewer. The outside shower also works very well. This was all the comfort we needed. The lake is the main attraction. It's crystal clear, surrounded by forest and filled with bass, northerns and pan-fish. There are also lots of loons, who don't seem to mind humans at all. If you like to catch fish, swim, sit by a campfire, canoe or just relax and read a book, this place is perfect. It's beautiful and remote -- there are only a few cabins on one shore of the lake, while the rest is wild. The closest grocery store is in Bigfork, 11 miles away, but Marcell, five miles away, also has a gas station/convenience store/gift shop that has most things you'll want or need, including bait and tackle. The locals are all very friendly as well. You'll also find the owner, who lives next door, to be very hospitable. He'll look in daily to see if you need anything, and doesn't mind if you knock on his door to ask a question. Overall, he's very helpful and glad to have you there. We feel he bends over backwards to give vacationers a great experience for their money. If you need something fancier, be prepared to pay a lot more somewhere else. If your priorities are for clean water, plenty of elbow room, a chance to catch some fish or just unspoiled natural beauty, you'll want to stay here.
