At the tip of the mountain, quiet and away from the stress of the city, this private and contemporary ‘A frame’ house overlooks the main cities of Costa Rica, distant volcanoes and mountain peaks. Both day and night the view is breath taking. The house faces east and therefore the view of the sunrise is beautiful. At nighttime it's comparable to looking at an ocean of lights as far as you can see.

The chalet used to be the studio of a famous Costa Rican painter, Cesar Valverde. It was his inspirational getaway retreat where he created some of his most recognized paintings. Today it’s a unique vocational destination.

As you walk towards the house, across the entrance stairways you’re surrounded by tropical plants that are lit up at nighttime to guide your way and illuminate the green colors of the entrance.

From the stairways you’re led to the main outdoor porch, a perfect place for relaxing, reading, enjoying the fresh air of the mountain or simply contemplating the views. The porch is integrated with the living room and the kitchen / dinning area as one open space which creates a great feeling of expansiveness.

This fully furnished house is ideal for a couple or a single person. The first floor has dimmer lighting, comfortable seating, a nice fire place within the living room to keep you warm at nights and a fully equipped kitchen / dinning area that is ideal for home made dinners as well. There is also a half bathroom, storage area and washing facilities.

The second floor of the house is the master bedroom suite. It is a spacious, wooden floor bedroom with dimmer lighting and a centerpiece king size bed from which you can also enjoy view, rest, watch television or listen to music. Lastly, there is a comfortable hammock to lie on, a contemporary full bathroom and a walk -in closet.

A computer is available for you to check your emails and stay in touch with your friends and family as well. You can also connect to the Internet wireless in case you prefer to work with your laptop from any part of the house (enjoying breakfast from the terrace, lying on the hammock, next to the fireplace, etc.)

Above the second floor, there is a small open loft with a full size bed as a secondary sleeping area. The stairs accessing this floor are somewhat steep; and we recommend that these sleeping quarters not be reserved for the elderly or small children.

As the owner and host of the Mountain Chalet, I have a small studio next to the chalet where I live. It is completely separate from the house but they share the same exterior walkway. Separate from the house there is a live-in guard and gardener.

  • My family and I stayed at the Mountain Chalet from April 1st thru the 8th, and our experience was wonderful. Roberto, the owner, and Rigo, the caretaker, were very attentive and willing to make our stay as comfortable as possible. The Chalet itself is charming. It has the feel of a rustic place, but at the same time it has all the comforts you would have in your home. The view at night is fantastic.   • I stayed at Roberto's Mountain Chalet for six weeks in Jan Feb 09. It was a great location to be centered for outreach to various activities throughout the country. The view is just outragously beautiful both at night and in the daytime from all the many windows of the home and it was always a wonderful respite to return to after a day's work! The grounds are lovely with hummingbirds and flowers and of course my 3 dog amigos who greeted me every day with enthusiasm and good behavior! Rigo the caretaker was great helping me whenever needed and we were able to manage well through my lack of Spanish! You will have appreciated privacy yet access to support whenever needed through Rigo and Roberto. All the comforts of home and the beauty of Costa Rica at your fingertips! Your stay will be paradise in the mountains.

It has everything that you need and more Roberto is a delight to deal with (even brought us a bottle of wine and chocolates. His inkeeper and 3 dogs are always handy for anything.   • We stayed at the Mountain Chalet for one month in the summer of 2008 and found it more than adequate for our purposes. (We had moved to Costa Rica and needed a place to use while we sought out permanent housing). The house was great. The view was beyond great. Roberto left us alone but was available if we needed him. It was particularly helpful to have use of his computer and cell phone. Rigoberto was a delight. Although he spoke no English, and us no Spanish, his enthusiasm and helpfulness was greatly appreciated. And of course, the view, is to die for. It spoiled us for other places we were considering moving to...

  • We stayed a week at the Mountain Chalet and had a marvelous time! The view itself is worth every penny, but the house is also great! Lots of ammenities and a location away from San Jose that lets you experience a more authentic Costa Rica, away from the hotels and resorts. Roberto and Rigo both couldn't be nicer! Both were very helpful in providing whatever we needed to enjoy our stay.

  • The Mountain Chalet is a great place to stay in the San Jose area if you are looking for something a little out of the way and a bit more "Costa Rican" than the hotels. It has a great sense of privacy which we treasure. The house makes a great base for day trips in the central valley and we took Roberto's advice on several. He has some connections with some easy guided hiking in the mountains surrounding San Jose, a connection I have never heard of before. Roberto makes a great host but is not intrusive at all. We have a home in the Dominical area of the Pacific Coast region of Costa Rica and will use the Mountain Chalet every time we need a Sam Jose base for a few days. Barry and Bruce

  • The Mountain Chalet is a wonderful place to stay while visiting the Central Valley. It is perched on a hill with a spectacular view. The home is simple yet equipped with all the comforts of home. Roberto was fantastic in aiding us with directions, suggestions, and other assistance we required during our stay. If you are looking for a comfortable, safe, and pleasant home to rent during your next visit to Costa Rica - we highly suggest you consider the Mountain Chalet.

  • wonderful stay..The place is a fabulous mixture of a rustic feel, or retreat, yet all the amenities of a modern home. The view is priceless.. Roberto was very helpful w/ directions and shortcuts for my daily trips to visit properties.. I plan on coming back there again when I'm in Costa Rica.. Mark
